In our previous videos, we have discussed the types of manually operated gearboxes. But, the gearboxes that we have seen so far had gears that rotate on fixed axes. In this video, we will be discussing a gearbox that has gears that rotate both on its axis and on some other axis.
We have explained what epicyclic gearbox is, its construction and how it is helpful in achieving different speeds and in changing the direction of motion.
An epicyclic gearbox or a planetary gearset consists of a sun gear, a number of planet gears connected together with a carrier and a ring gear. Of these three members, one is held fixed. One is used as input and the other as the output. By changing these three, different speeds and different directional drive can be achieved.
Automatic transmission systems use a compound planetary gearset and we will discuss that in a separate video. Stay tuned!
