The spectrum doesn't actually refer to the severity of autism. It refers to the vastly different character traits people with autism share. I'm autistic. Low-functioning, high-masking. I can appear "normal" to the untrained eye. But over long periods of time, I have difficulty performing tasks most people find easy. Like brushing my teeth, taking a shower, brushing my hair, maintaining a home, etc. My autism is paired with ADHD, so I have issues following a schedule. I go into "waiting mode" a lot. Where I can't perform any tasks or do anything I enjoy for fear that I'll be late to an appointment or event. This looks lazy from the outside. But there's a lot of guilt and anxiety associated with it. I'll be doing nothing while thinking of all the things I need to do. Then I beat myself up for not doing them. I'm dopamine driven. This means I switch interests to maintain the sense that I'm learning something new, and I wait until the last minute to get things done because I'm completely time-blind. That part makes it hard to hold a job. Essentially autism is just a process in the brain. It adds steps to a task, or takes them away. It's just a different way some brains process information. Sometimes there's a lot of excess energy, this causes stimming behavior like rocking back and forth, tapping your fingers, and biting your cheek or nails. Sometimes it's the opposite, and there's no energy at all. Autism usually comes paired with something else. Like depression, ADHD, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Some people are born with it. Some people develop it as a result of childhood trauma. you'll either have it or you won't by the time you reach adolescence. It presents itself wildly differently person to person.
@larsvegas1505
@larsvegas1505 5 месяцев назад
I also think that u suffer from a thing that makes u put all ur shortcomings behind a wall... because someone said ur on a spectrum everything u do that is unwanted behaviour is just a part of it and u and others around u just have to live with it.. I see that a lot with a friend i have that also has autism... once the doctor said he had it all his behaviours went down hill.. like he was just fine with it because hes on a spectrum now.. and people have to just deal... he lost a lot of friends that way though.. people dont want to hang with a asshole.
@Ember1220
@Ember1220 5 месяцев назад
@@larsvegas1505 being diagnosed with something doesn't mean you don't continue to work on yourself. I'm time blind. But I set multiple alarms to keep myself on track. I slip up sometimes, but everyone does. You find ways to maneuver around your diagnosis. It's just not the "normal" way. People are individuals. Some people are going to put all of the blame away from themselves. But wanting someone to understand you doesn't make you unable to see your own shortcomings and how to improve them. People are individuals. Stop projecting the feelings you have towards your friend onto me. I am not them. We are two different people with very different perspectives.
@DannyBowen25
@DannyBowen25 4 месяца назад
@@Ember1220You're not time blind, because you couldn't see time if you were. It's just you don't care about being where you're supposed to be at a given time. Aka, you're a HUMAN. It's not autism.
@Ember1220
@Ember1220 4 месяца назад
@@DannyBowen25 yeah...I can't tell how much time a task will take. AKA, time blindness. When you go to brush your teeth, you probably give yourself like 5 minutes. In and out. I give myself the same amount of time, but it takes MUCH longer than that. To you, it's "grab the toothbrush, brush my teeth, done." To me, it's "grab the toothbrush, wet the toothbrush, put the right amount of toothpaste on the brush, wet it again, brush for 60 seconds, Spit, rinse, spit, rinse toothbrush, put up toothbrush, done." And somehow by the end of it 15 minutes have passed. Which is why I go into waiting mode. Because I care SO MUCH about getting where I need to be on time that I can't do literally anything else for fear that I'll lose track of time. You don't know me. And I don't appreciate a complete stranger talking about my life as if they have a clue what it looks like. You've never met me. And I don't need your negativity.
@DannyBowen25
@DannyBowen25 4 месяца назад
@Ember1220 well, considering tasks vary depending on a lot of things, that's normal. If you're telling me, you don't know if brushing teeth takes 20 hours or 5 minutes. You're lying.

@AliSand It was though. People with Autism for 1 example have an extreme sensitivity to senses like hearing, so they hate loud noises and can't function properly That's 1 aspect Another being difficulty to adapt. Another being OCD. Another being unable to recognize social cues or expressive features etc. He was just listing a bunch of those Autism at its stereotypical heart is an extreme mental disability, but the singular effects are still significant enough to have you fall behind your peers when you should be relatively normal, so you're behind in growth in certain aspects The "spectrum" thing is just a term for non-linear range, that's all

My son is on the spectrum and is one of the best people I know. His early intervention specialists explained it to me this way- neurotypical brains have a small opening in which all external stimulus and data is siphoned through compared to the neurodivergent brains, which have a larger opening. She said it is like comparing a tip of a needle to a dinner plate. Once I realized this- his meltdowns made sense- he was being flooded with stimulation. He is now mainstreamed and is thriving and flourishing. He asked me the other day if I know funny people, people that are funny- I said yes. He quickly responded “yeah I’m one of those people” - I laughed, he went on, “no really, at school, I make people laugh all the time with the faces I make, but tbh, most of the time I’m genuinely confused about what’s happening” 😂😂 my sweet 11 year old.

@@joel.ha. It's such an obvious and absurd joke that to even try it is funny in and of itself. Bill is sitting down, he can be seen to be sitting down. Asking "Are you sitting down?" is something you might do while talking to someone on the phone before you give them devastating news, in case they are so overwhelmed they fall down. So it's obvious, highly dramatic for the given situation, but also purely delivered as a hackneyed joke, and in such a low key and deadpan manner, it becomes funny, even to a seasoned comic like Bill. Earlier he made another hackneyed and old fashioned joke so old and dumb that it hasn't been funny for ages. He talked about having just flown from far away, and then followed up with "my arms are tired." as if he had flapped his harms to fly. It's such a bad joke, the kind you say not because it's funny, but because it's funny that you'd try to use it even though it's so dumb. His delivery was good enough it got Bill to laugh.

Why did it cut before he explained how the spectrum actually works? That's the most important part. If anyone is curious, the way that the spectrum works is that, instead of an individual being one point on the spectrum, like how we normally think of spectra, each individual occupies many points on the spectrum. If you've ever used a spectrograph in chemistry or physics class, it's a lot like that, a light that looks blue isn't usually just blue, it occupies some violet, some red, maybe some yellow too. You can think of each colour as a group of characteristics/behaviours indicative of autism. You need to have more than a certain number of these traits in order to be diagnosed with ASD, so many neurotypical people occupy a handful of the points on the spectrum, but not enough to be autistic. This doesn't mean "everybody is at least a little autistic" many of the traits on the spectrum mean nothing on their own, and many people don't have any of the traits

@buubaku
@buubaku Год назад
@marlyjade4075 yeah it is a developmental disorder
@Quasita
@Quasita Год назад
It's a developmental neurological presentation and the categorization of the disorder doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how many characteristics one has. Diagnosis is contingent upon two major factors that could include a number of different traits but one of those traits is essentially required for an actual diagnosis. That trait is impairment of social behavior... Which encompasses things like lack of facial awareness, difficulties with expression and empathy and understanding nonverbal communication between individuals... The overall impression being that you can't easily navigate interpersonal situations, but even within that, there's a very specific approach to it.. because if we looked at just the description I just gave, a bunch of people who just have social anxiety issues or fear of strangers or something would fall into that category and that's not something that we want to conflate. Rather, the evaluation of that impact it has to do with debilitation. It has to do with meeting assistance to navigate. Because with a person who has just social anxiety for example, they may experience higher levels of anxiousness when trying to socialize but they can still understand social cues they can still understand and recognize facial expressions they can still behave on behalf of their own sense of empathy in ways that would be socially expected and normal whereas a person who has ASD really can't without a concerted effort to educate themselves in pattern recognition or having an assistant person essentially interpret situations for you. ASD is categorized into three primary impact levels and those impact levels can be attributed to a number of different characteristics and things but all three of them include a social impairment that requires outside information to navigate... And the three levels of ASD are differentiated by the severity of that impairment. Therefore, a person may be on the spectrum, but they're impairment from that may be very minimal, and this is honestly where a lot of adults who are presumptively placed on the spectrum would really lie because they've gotten two adulthood by deciphering and figuring out things for themselves like a puzzle rather than having to be taught like being in a class with a teacher. It's my personal opinion that it is an overdiagnosed or over applied label these days, especially because so many people who reached adulthood are coming home from a single visit with a psychologist and saying that they were diagnosed on the spectrum... That just doesn't actually happen, you don't get diagnosed with it in a single session with a psychologist. I've seen people come home from seeing their GP and claiming it when the way that went was they read a bunch of stuff on the internet and thought it sounded similar to them, they went to their doctor and said it, and their doctor said it was a possibility, and the patient takes that home as a confirmation. It just doesn't work like that. I've gotten into arguments with people who found it odd that you would ask them about interviews with their family or coworkers, they reject the idea that you have to take a personality disorder battery test to make sure that what you're interpreting is ASD isn't just a personality disorder, there's all sorts of things that go into that diagnosis when you're an adult. As a kid, it still takes multiple inputs to make the decision but because we defer a lot to parents and teachers for kids, as well as a kid's friends can't necessarily inform on the appropriateness of their behavior, it's more likely that you'll get a diagnosis from a provider as a child much quicker. Even so, if you are a low impact spectrum kid, you may never be seen as anything other than quirky or a little odd until you're able to express your own experience of confusion and inability to understand social expectations. The reason why I'm replying to this comment though, it falls into a space that I find very frustrating because there's a certain authority being absorbed before making the declaration of how it works and as you read on, do you realize that this isn't clinically how it works. It may be true that pretty much any characteristic that's under the umbrella of autism can be seen in people who are not on the spectrum, but there's a distinct difference between how they present with a person on the spectrum versus somebody who is not. Even when you list out all of these things in one long list of characteristics or symptoms, it doesn't actually mean anything unless it's being evaluated within the primary guidance structure for ASD evaluation, which is solely centered around impairment. Essentially what I'm saying is that unless you have a recognition of that impairment as part of how it works, you're not talking about evaluating ASD at all, you're evaluating a variety of psychological or interpersonal characteristics that really can show up in just about anybody at any given time and various situations. This is one of the reasons why there are so many people who look at that list and they think ah sounds like me, I must be on the spectrum... But a person cannot diagnose or evaluate their own personal place on that impairment scale.. they are inherently biased based on the opinion they've already developed, but they're also biased in the sense that a person navigates the world and the thing and ways that seem normal and natural to them and may not even realize that doing that sets them outside the average interaction spectrum or that doing that might be impairing their ability to navigate the world's successfully and without assistance in a way that they don't necessarily recognize because they are autistic. At best, an individual can look at their personal circumstances into a comparison against what they're perceiving as the average, but then... Even recognizing that you may be different than the standard deviation isn't enough to diagnose. If you recognize that you are different from everybody else but it doesn't impair your ability to go through work it doesn't change your ability to get through school, it doesn't limit your ability to make friendships with people you want to be friends with, if it doesn't have that central core of impairment for successful navigation of life, you could just as easily be talking about somebody who's comfortable being outside average but is otherwise able to navigate typical situations without the assistance of others.

It's far more interesting to talk to someone afflicted with any condition and ask them about it, then try and read the rather dry medical and scientific reports or studies on said subject. Because it is missing the subjectional aspects on how someone copes with it. On top of that he's a comedian, there for an interview I'm guessing, so why exactly does he have to read up on the podcasters bio or done entire case study about autism. Not being funny, but that's unbelievably rare these days. Yesterday I commented on a video about why it's wrong to say 'the Ukraine' and you should just say 'Ukraine', just as a little explanation because the guy in the video gave a very quick explanation with some examples which were actually incorrect. No big deal, it wasn't a big part of the video, I just thought I'd shed some light in the comments for anyone curious. I like the creator and it wasn't written in a critical or confrontational way. I live in Spain and I'm an English teacher, it's literally my day job to explain how and when to use the definite article to people... and I got bombed with comments offering alternative explanations and arguing with me. And it's like... guys, this is not very important, nobody needs to die on this hill, but again, this is my job and and I know the correct answer. The smartest people are always the most curious, who ask the most questions, but people who think they're the smartest always want to argue and shut people down. I don't get it at all. If you say 'wtf is autism, I dont understand it', you will look dumb for about 3 minutes, and then for the rest of you're life you'll know something you didn't know before, and you won't just look smarter, you'll be smarter. Coincidently, before teaching I was a support worker at a residential care facility for autistic young people, and the explanation here is actually pretty good. See what happens when you just ask, and don't try to 'win' every discussion every time!
