What Is Dreamworks' Dragons: The Nine Realms And Why Is It Happening? (New HTTYD Series)

Dreamworks is continuing the How To Train Your Dragon franchise now that Dragons: The Nine Realms, a new HTTYD series, is streaming on Peacock and Hulu in December. So what is Dragons: The Nine Realms and why is it happening? Why is it on Peacock and Hulu instead of Netflix? Is John Powell involved? Is Dean DeBlois involved? What are the nine realms, how does this tie in with mythology and HTTYD?
The Dragons: The Nine Realms trailer didn't give much information about the new Dreamworks series, but we know it's set 1300 years after the events of the previous HTTYD movies and shows. This creates a bit of am issue in the HTTYD timeline, which I explain in the video.

What do you think of the announcement of Dragons: The Nine Realms? Please keep in mind parts of this video are my opinion and feel free to disagree respectfully. So I my friend I really do feel like they should be done with this trilogy but another part of myself I'm like we need more. I will watch it to see what they do with it but if they start putting things in like talking dragons or other things like that I'm done lol but I like talking dragons as well but yah that's how I feel right now lol.

As a nordic person I wanna clarify some things. Dragons were quite a big part of our mythos, we just called them worms, not dragons, as they were usually depicted as giant snakes protecting gold. Like the lindwyrm, or lindorm literally translates to snakeworm. Had a lot of popular dragons too. Like nidhogg, jormungandr, fafnir, and lindwyrms were all the dragons on the side, usually. Also you can guess what time HTTYD takes place as vikingtime was around 800 a.d at the earliest. So yes, if it follows the proper timeline, the new show would take place around 2100s. Pardon the tangent, Im just some person on the internet.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing! I have heard of the Midgard serpent (I think it's even in the picture I used?) but I guess dragons/worms aren't the most famous parts of Norse mythology. And yes, the timeline definitely doesn't work like it's supposed to. Not anymore, anyway... Do you know much about the Hardanger Fiddle? I talked about it briefly in my previous HTTYD score analysis. Honestly I'm of the same opinion. It feels like they're discrediting the last movie and the ending it had, and the emotions I had with it. That was supposed to be the last of httyd! Personally, I think I would like this show better if they had better models. The trailer seems to foreshadow a very cheep and quickly made show with cartooney characters that aren't nearly as good as even Riders of Berk. I'll probably watch it though, just because httyd was and still is my favorite franchise ever- but I'm afraid of being disappointed.

It does seem like it was done on a smaller budget than the other shows. I find it’s best to go in with neutral expectations; that’s how I experienced HTTYD 3 and I was satisfied. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

It may not be entirely necessary but I think it has potential. I think it would be a LOT worse if this series was about Hiccup and Toothless as their story is finished. I definitely think Nine Realms is going in the Legend of Korra direction being set a long time after the original.

@@leeobrien2004 That's a fair comparison. Of course, at this point we still know so little. However, I don't think the new setting means it will be a better decision than continuing the story of Hiccup and Toothless. Setting it in the future might just give it a really shaky foundation instead of a strong solution.

I'm not a huge fan of all HTTYD spinoffs. I just don't care, but it's good for the franchise that there's always something going on. I secretly believe that Dean, Chris, Powell and the crew will get together after a few years and come back to tell us another emotional story about Hiccup and Toothless. Editing is great as always.

Yeah, I only ever saw the first season of the first show and Gift of the Night Fury. It would be interesting if they all returned, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about even that. Thanks about the editing! I pushed myself here!

@@FilmScoreandMore I never got to watch the second show, but I was able to view the first and third ones. I can probably assume a rough idea as to why you haven't watched them because they tend start out very rough. I will say that they get better though. Riders of Berk is able to catch a few moments that I like as much as parts of the movies. Race to the Edge, however, was able to capture a sense of character development that I craved outside the movies, and the villainy after Season 1 is excellent; perhaps better than Drago and Grimmel. I recommend watching them a bit more if you get some spare time.

That's great to hear! Thanks for the recommendation. That's the strength of the medium, too. TV allows for that long-form storytelling and development; I think that's a big part of why HTTYD 2 skipped ahead five years, to avoid that period and let the shows handle it.

@@FilmScoreandMore I would recommend watching Riders of Berk, Defenders Of Berk and Race To The Edge (AKA the main series). Not Rescue Riders, because it's for toddlers and it doesn't take place in the same universe. Riders and Defenders of Berk aren't super great, but you do need to watch them to understand Race to the Edge. Race to the Edge is awesome! It has 6 seasons and is on Netflix. It also answers a lot of the Why's and How's of HTTYD 2. Like how Hiccup got his wingsuit or Inferno (firesword). It also introduces a buttload of new characters and you get to see a lot of dragon species that you don't really see in the movies like the Scauldron, Armourwing, Night Terror, Deathsong and there is even a Bewilderbeast in the final season! Plus it does use some of the themes from the movies in the score.

@@DaanBruins Yeah, I’ve heard some pretty good things about Race To The Edge, and I’ve heard the intro is pulled from that part of Dragon Racing that’s pulled from Dragons Den in the first movie.

I completely agree with what you've said here. As for my reaction? I'm cautiously optimistic. This doesn't really seem like a Rescue Riders type of show, aimed at pre-schoolers. Plus, since it's being done by the same guy who did Dragons: Race to the Edge (which I believe is one of the best parts of the whole franchise), I think it definitely has potential. That being said, I'm not holding my breath. I'll check it out when it gets released, but if I don't like what I'm seeing, I'll probably just forget it ever existed.

Cautious optimism is always a good approach. When I was making this video I was a little afraid fans might have their hopes too high, but seems like quite a few are very level-headed about this, whether they look forward to it or not.

Yea no. Dragons already ended on a goosebumpingly amazing ending 2 years ago. If they're planning a continuation or something, they better make it good. We dont want this series to be like F&F. They already made a good ending with Paul Walker's tribute in F7 now that series is just avengers with wheels. I am still optimistic for this show. If it turns out good, well, great.

Good attitude. I agree (obviously) that it really feels done by now. Sometimes a sequel or spin-off should be done if a writer has a really strong new idea for it, but even then it doesn't mean it should still be continued.

Personally, I didn't like the art style and I was definitely not prepared for a "sequel". BUT things can be very different than they seem, so I think I'll give it a try. The good thing about having no expectations is that it will never be worse than you think...

That’s a healthy mindset to have. I did the same with HTTYD 3 and while it’s not perfect there were some aspects to the movie I was pleasantly surprised by. I’m also surprised by the number of commenters who share your approach, which I think is great.

I think I’ll do the same. It is dragons we’re talking about, a creature that I’m a big sucker for. I just hope they don’t botch it and ruin yet another good thing, like what Cartoon Network did with Ben 10 and Teen Titans.

I loved everything in the OG HTTYD series (movies/ shows) except the last movie (3). It felt like we could get more out of the series after Hiccup and Astrid's engagement. I was actually excited for that, to have more journey action before they got married. But the third movie rushed it for me, while also rushing the independence of Toothless. It felt like that came out of nowhere and that just cause Toothless saw another fury it was his time to be on his own. Like he gave up everything for the light fury, why couldn't the light fury make changes for Toothless? And then the children... Why did they have to have children so soon too? I would have loved the four of them going on adventures and then Hiccup finding out Astrid's pregnant, that would've been so cute. But I also see them as a beautiful family without kids at all. I could keep going, but yeah, I don't understand the third movie.

It worked for me. I automatically have neutral/low expectations for sequels that come out years after the original and this was almost a decade after the first. Overall it satisfied my expectations, I joined parts of it quite a bit, and I was satisfied with the ending.

first I was excited at a new show. And then I heard "1000+ years in the future" that just kinda takes a lot of the charm away for me. The real world is boring, and the modern world even more so. Just like you said, HTTYD is supposed to be set in a fantasy world that doesn't reflect reality?

Hey, that's a good approach to have. Being neutral means you probably won't be disappointed, but if it's good you can still enjoy it. I think it's too late to do more with Hiccup and Toothless but also dangerous setting it in the modern world, so they've really set themselves a challenge here.

I felt that the ending was perfect, where there was no need to add any more. If they really had to make another series, just keep the original gang… sometimes somethings better off left alone, and they should at least have a decent animation quality. Idk at this point, but if I had an idea, they could’ve done a complete book to movie adaptation, where there was a series that followed the same plot line of the books, but kept the changes such as Astrid being added. Either way I doubt I’m gonna watch it either.

I agree with you on the ending. But I don't think another series following the books would be the right move. That would be confusing to a lot of parents, that they're doing more and yet there's no continuity with the other movies. It would be pretty confusing.

I really enjoyed this! Your analysis of it makes sense, and I like that you added your own research and such into your opinion. Your humorous editing was also top-tier xD I personally will try to keep a neutral opinion on this until more is revealed about it; if they do it well and do it right, then I think it could have some really great potential and be a wonderful show. But, like you've pointed out a little, there's a LOT that could go wrong with it and it might just ruin itself with jumping so far ahead in time. I guess we'll just have to see! Here's my two cents: Honestly when I saw this, I was definitely not impressed. I'm sure they have a smaller budget, but the designs are bad, the animation is really stiff, and the modern world.. isn't that great. It's supposed to be a fantasy world, that's what made it so great! Anything could happen and the directors made it believable. It was exciting, and beautifully made. You got attached to characters, invested in the story, and the series ended so well, there was closure. I don't see any of that happening here. It's a shame, I grew up with this franchise and it's saddening to see it go this way. I'd imagine a lot of the good reviews are younger children or parents who are just excited to see another dragon show. But it's only the preview, so who knows right?

I think this announcement is your own opinion. But I am looking forward for this show and you all need to give this show a chance. Think of this scenario. How would you react if you found a dragon on an island and you become friends with he or she. As you bond with him or her you remember all the fairytale books you read as a kid and you wish you could meet a dragon and as you mature you forget the fairytale until you actually met one. Something inside you awakens and it’s your childhood dream of meeting a dragon wishing to fly with it and you do and it feels real. So what if Hiccup and Toothless and the other characters are not in this new tv series. Hiccup and Toothless’s story ended and they pass the torch to another character and his dragon in a new era. This is not going to ruin the franchise. If it did I can think the only way to ruin it would be to remake the films into a live action film. This new series as I see it is passing down its’ tradition of dragon adventure to a new age in the modern era. Don’t you all think we should give this dragon franchise a chance? I for one am going to give this show a chance. I want to see how this story goes and it will be fun.

And like I said in my pinned comment, it’s just entertainment and you can choose to take it or leave it. I didn't know for sure, but I'm honestly not all that surprised Dean Deblois has nothing to do with this thing. And honestly am glad, I like it when directors don't give in to the cash cow and actually decide to not get involved into things that they never truly wanted for their films.

I was kind of disgusted and disappointed at first but after some thought, I decided that I might give it a go. Even though it’s probably going to be very annoying. The only reason I’m really interested is because I’m kind of excited to see what they find about the past of the trilogy. But then again, all things must come to an end..

That's the piano solo from the track "Where's Hiccup?" from the end of HTTYD 1 (which was actually played by the composer himself), but the exact timing seems a little different so I think it was edited for the trailer or it was a re-recording. I'm on the fence about Dragons: The Nine Realms but I'm eager to see it none the less. My only request for DreamWorks......Please...Please...PLEEEAAASE treat the masterpiece that is the How To Train Your Dragon franchise with respect so do not turn this project into a joke that will insult the HTTYD franchise for all eternity. Personally I think they should have just let the franchise have its curtain call as it ended with dignity, and if they really wanted another spin-off why not tell about Hiccup's children or of a time between the second and third movie the way Race to the Edge was set between the first and second film. Also what I can't understand with DreamWorks is if they want to make a spin-off or sequel to a story then why not make a sequel to movies that never got a full ending, for example: • Rise of the Guardians. The movie Rise of the Guardians was in my opinion very good and worthy of a sequel but it was left off after the first movie leaving more questions than answers such as 'What happened between the Easter Bunny and Jack Frost during the blizzard of 68?'. The film was based of the books 'The Guardians of Childhood' which is a treasure trove of content that could easily make a sequel and a series or two, so if DreamWorks wants to make a sequel or series then why not complete the Rise of the Guardians that was never fully completed.

Yes, I definitely wish they would respect the ending of the HTTYD series. I wish they didn't even make Homecoming, which I still haven't seen but it seems like just one more thing tacked onto an already-closed story. I've also never seen Rise of the Guardians, but your comment does help to point out how many Dreamworks hits are based on books: Shrek and HTTYD are also (loosely) based on books and I think it might be time for another attempt. They don't need a totally original idea for a movie, they can adapt one and make changes like before. Thanks for watching the video and for your comment!

@@someonerandom9939 I know, that’s part of why I think it wouldn’t work well. Prequels and interquels have such narrow ground to operate in because they have to fall within the established restraints of everything else. And I heard Homecoming kind of ends with the decision to visit the dragons at the Hidden World, which I’m sure would happen anyway. The whole short just seems like an unnecessary to me.

It's the How To Train Your Dragon 2 game. It's really not great in terms of general game design, and the voices are really loud (with no option to adjust them), but it's still really nice to fly around Berk. And it plays music tracks straight from the score while you do!

I don't think this show is a terrible idea in itself. Personally, my brain divides the worlds of Hiccup and "How to Train Your Dragon" with the other Dragons shows, so a new series doesn't feel like it's betraying its origins. It's a big universe, much like the Star Wars franchise and all its media (it's not always about the Skywalkers!), and there's room for more stories beyond Hiccup and Toothless. Am I hopeful that it won't suck? Absolutely. Will it replace HTTYD in my heart? Never.

I think the Viking era and Middle Ages overlap. Like I said in the video the timeline doesn’t really make sense anyway, but those two things would have happened around the same time.

I'm in the same boat as you for the most part. The movies were meant to be a trilogy, and to finish at that. I'm not too keen on the idea of reviving this in the way they are just because of money. That being said, I will give it a look if I can. It's not impossible for it to be good, or even excellent. Who knows? There could be a centralized plot that strictly ties into the movies; it's happened before. I doubt it will, but I will go in expecting to be somewhat, but not too, disappointed. That way, I'll be prepared for whatever happens. Also, 6:21 has now given me too much excitement. I will be buying this thing instantly. You know what this means? For so many tracks, specifically Hiccup the Chief and Flying With Mother for me, will have the _lyrics_ available. Agh, I've been dying to sing those at some point. I also hope Where No One Goes is in there as well. I'm not a fan of pop, but it is a Powell-Jonsi duo project with orchestration. It'd be meaningful to have it in the scorebook.

Technically, it was meant to be one movie that finished very well. The sequels are great, but they are kind of a stretch of the property already. And wow, it didn't even occur to me we might get lyrics in the scorebook! Did you know Flying With Mother contains 17th century poetry sung in Gaelic? And now we can actually own this? I feel the same about Where No One Goes; I'm not a big pop fan, but the track has grown on me some and it would be nice to see it in the book.

Even though they were stretched, I believe it was for the best. There was a ton of top tier stuff that came from the sequels, and from the first movie as a result of the sequels. The most important thing, which I'm worried about for Nine Realms, is that it did not milk the franchise. That's one of the biggest reasons as to why Dragons is respected, and NR makes it very easy to mess that up. I had a feeling it was Gaelic, either that or Latin, but I did not know it was poetry from there 17th century! I'm heavily intrigued by this. Also, notice that every track in Dragons 2 Original Soundtrack(I think there are a couple unreleased without one) has vocals of some kind compared to the few tracks in 1. This scorebook will emphasize the experience Powell got with a choir between the first and second movies.

Yeah, that's what DeBlois brought to the table; he wanted to ensure the sequels were there to add value, structure, and closure. You're right about the choir. The female voice is obviously the most motherly sound he could use, which is fitting for the story. That will be neat to see. @@MADTRICKSTER You’re welcome. I know Nine Realms has two seasons out and a third coming this year. As I said in the video, Dean DeBlois made an agreement to make three movies total, and the third was supposed to be the last. There may be other spin-offs, but I wouldn’t expect a movie.

@@templarknightac Yeah, it's worth asking. I know 8-Bit Music Theory has done a lot of videos like that and Sideways has maybe done a couple, but he mostly uses them as examples. The funny thing is he's really into video game music and chose to cover film music more because he found he could get more traction that way, but you might want to request something from him anyway (requests are free on his Patreon page). I on the other hand I am looking forward to it but I have to agree doing a movie of How to Train Your Dragon without Hiccup and Toothless without even the memory of Hiccup and Toothless and in the Modern Age where things are bound to be more dangerous considering how well they would be able to hunt dragons it's sending and disappointing that friendship in that bod that allows a human and a dragon AKA Hiccup and Toothless to understand each other without even talking is being left out and if they're not leaving it out they're basically creating a new story based off of How to Train Your Dragon I just hope they won't make how to train your dragons the original story with Hiccup and Toothless look bad somehow using this new story that I love the bond between Hiccup and Toothless and not just that Astrid and Stormfly and all the others it is the long story of an extremely strong bond between human and dragon the amount of emotion it puts into each story is incredible

Keep in mind this is a six-episode series, twenty-two minutes each, not a full movie. And the second trailer suggests there will be some references to the Vikings at least, which is what I've thought; they wouldn't make this show without referencing the movies and characters before.

@@leeobrien2004 That's an interesting rating. The third is definitely the most underrated and most poorly understood, but it sounds like you really see its strengths and the value in it. Mine would have to be:1, 2, and 3. They're all great in their own ways, but 1 is the most competent and complete, plus I just prefer that version of the world and the characters. 2 has more problems than a lot of fans seem to address but it's still an incredible sequel. And my opinion of the third matches yours pretty well; of course it's not perfect, but it could have gone *a lot* worse. Thanks for asking!

My reaction to finding this out, honestly i'm iffy about whether i'd like it or not. I just hate when its a continuing series and it has different art and animation style, I wouldn't mind having another httyd movie sure, but I'm pretty much like, its getting to the point where I just can't enjoy it because its always repeating. Also nothing will /EVER/ beat httyd.

Yeah, Dreamworks does have a habit of turning every installment of theirs into a series if there's any money in it. I really want them to find something new and original again and put their efforts into that. A lot of people here say they want to give it a shot. You could try at least a few minutes and base your decision off of something more concrete that way.

I'll be honest: I don't see this going well at all. Maybe if they pull a Sonic or something on the dragon designs. (The zippleback variant alone is horrifying.) I just don't understand why they thought this was a good idea. THW gave us a beautiful ending to the series with a very satisfying sense of closure. Why not just leave it there?

It's way too late to pull a Sonic; the Sonic redesign happened months before the movie came out, this one in ten days. I'm glad to find more support for the ending of HTTYD 3; so many people seem to get the wrong idea from it and are very pessimistic about it.

It won't. HTTYD is still strong and nothing can undo the movies and shows that already exist. It gets very good reviews, has made a lot of money, and is something of a franchise. Even the scores alone have made a name for themselves with one article calling them "Star Wars quality" and the scores being released on deluxe albums and in scorebooks, both of which are rare honors for film music.

On one hand, Race to the Edge is great, it expands literally everything. The world, dragons, characters, personalities, EVERYTHING. On the other hand, I feel like this will just be another bad series where it tries to be relatable and appeal to older audience but just fails horrendously, though I hope I'm wrong since I really do want another How to Train Your Dragon but it won't really be the same without Hiccup and Toothless.

It's obviously still hard to tell, but something about this seems more kid-focused to me. The opening narration just sounds very much like it was written for a kids' show and I don't think they're making an effort to appeal to wider audiences. And as some have pointed out since this video, John Tellegen worked on both Race To The Edge and Rescue Riders; this could go either way. Thanks for your comment!

Being cautiously optimistic or neutral is a great approach. I had that same mindset going into HTTYD 3 and it looks like I was more satisfied with it than a lot of fans. Whatever happens remember you can always choose to enjoy it or move on. It's up to you.

I know that's a pretty popular suggestion. I think it's because they weren't supposed to interfere with the characters or storyline related to the movies since they finished. This way they have more independence, but I think the whole concept is on pretty shaky ground.

my opinion, I don't like the art style, and the sequel isn't what expected. honestly I would like one more time with hiccup and toothless with their family before any sequel that is not the main characters anymore. Also maybe it would be fun to have many realms explore by maybe hiccup, or his children or his blood line in the future but not fully in the modern world (maybe 300 years later) but I'll just have to wait and see what they have made before I can fully give my vertical in this whole series.

Well, despite the fact that I'm a fan of the tv shows that take place between the first two movies, I'm a bit... confused, I guess. I just don't really see the point in making a new show set so long after the original story. None of the characters, both human and dragon alike, are going to still be around, so it'll be a challenge trying to develop that same bond to wholly new characters. Not to mention it seems like it makes the ending of the third film kind of pointless- the whole point of that was to show humans still weren't ready for dragons, and to inspire the audience to make one worthy of them. But still, even if it's bad, it could not possibly be worse than Rescue Riders.

I agree it feels kind of pointless. I know HTTYD as a brand and a world has potential to branch off beyond the main story and characters, but they're what made it so great in the first place and I don't think it has tremendous franchise capabilities; where Star Wars has the jedi, bounty hunters, imperials, rebels, multiple time periods, etc, HTTYD has... dragons. It all revolves around dragons so there's not a lot of room for it to reinvent itself so well, especially if the new story and characters are worse.

I don't know, if it is good to continue the show without the main characters, or not. I only have one question. How do the species of fury survive? Toothless had kids, but how do they continued the species without other dragons? It is going to a really bad conclusion, at this rate.

I'm not sure how long Night or Light Furies can live, but you can see other Light Furies in the Hidden World, meaning there are others available for Toothless' offspring to breed with.

I'm not sure my initial 50/50 fandom split was accurate; it was hard to tell at the time, but it seems like most people aren't looking forward to this and are only willing to give it a shot rather than being onboard for it.

The good news is nothing will ruin HTTYD; it already exists and this new show isn't going to change that. It's just going to be a new thing that will be judged by different standards, but we will still have everything else with no changes made to them.

I think doing it with the main characters would still be inappropriate because their story is already over. Technically they could do another series between HTTYD 2 and 3, but that would be a very weird point in time to make their final entry. And I'm really not sure about the music; it's all used so purposefully in the movies, so it may not really have a place in the new show. It's a tricky situation.

I'll bite if the guy that made race to the edge made it. But I grew out of watching that. I watched every episode once maybe twice. But I couldn't stomach myself watching anymore not because it was a bad show, it expanded on the lore more then the movies could. But because I just grew out of it. it was like if your dad was watching and enjoying SpongeBob or some other showed aimed at a younger generation. it just sat wrong with me. which is weird because I was the target audience for the first movie. And then the second. For a series that grew with it's audience it sure did treat you like it didn't sometimes.

I think that makes sense. Just enjoy whatever you do. Don't stick with something because you feel obligated to enjoy it and don't leave because you feel obligated not to; it's all just entertainment. I will say also that Tellegen also had a hand in making Rescue Riders, so it's unclear which show this will be closer to. I think it's probably right in the middle.

I saw the first season of the first show but I was over that target audience by then and since it was (understandably) a much lower quality than the movies I decided not to watch more. It’s not a bad show, I just didn’t feel compelled to watch more.

I don’t think that the new series was worth it because a lot of people were upset about it including me because it’s not the same with out toothless and hiccup because they basically tried to copy it but in the future but it’s like 1000 times worse in my opinion I just hope they reconsider in making another movie with the kids or something because I would like to see them grow up but the dragons come back So that’s my opinion

i personally liked to think the "vikings" took place in a future where humanity had to sacrafice technology for safety in a world where dragons, giant fire breathing apex predators could sense electric waves much like a shark can, perhaps this giving up on our timely tech gave the earth time to heal, enough time went by for humans to forget how these things like nukes and satalites worked and the tectonic plates just moved over time, giving the vickings new places to explore the new show.. takes away from my personal head cannon =/
