What Is Driving Trucking? Supply and Demand, Economy, Elections

Trucking Made Successful

The trucking industry seems to be getting slightly more manageable, but the question is why? Is it the upcoming 2024 elections? Is it just the supply and demand curve? Is it seasonality? Is it temporary or will it last?

I been struggling this month.been doing reefer for 18 yrs.been getting 350(+-) mile loads for $1,000 to $1,400... Thing is if you waste 1 minute calling broker to negotiate the rate some other looser books it for less!! This mentality needs to stop!! Carriers that do that are just hurting everyone!! Say no to cheap rates!!

@Hazara26
@Hazara26 Месяц назад
It is simple economy. When something is not selling in the store or out of season then the owner lower the price and sell it to get atleast something out of that item. So now the market is not so good and lots of competition, so in this situation what would you prefer to make total loss or get some money to cover your truck cost? Remember when someone is offering you a lower price means he is under the water too because demand is less and supply is more. When demand will get more then the price will automatically come up. Supply and demand thingy.

@nobrkt

You cannot make money with editing logs if you take cheap loads. Editing logs is a helpful tool to make some extra $, but it’s not the game changer or the reason of cheap loads. It’s the equaliser in a broken system where no customer or no broker wants to pay for your wasted time. It's the same thing as paper logs, I know drivers edit them as well, so what now? B) You are fighting with the wrong guys.

I think everybody is struggling financially, and that’s regardless, of who the president is. A lot of people didn’t do better with Trump in office, but wages were still low then. The cost of living was just lower, so we could afford things. Fuel prices are higher now, and our dollar has been devalued even more. Americans don’t have confidence in their government no matter what party. We no longer feel like our politicians put us first. Which probably extends into the economy. If we feel like jobs will be lost, our taxes will be spent elsewhere, and, no matter who gets elected. It will suck for all of us in someway, I’m pretty sure that’s forcing a lot of people to just hold onto their money, no matter how small it is, and if they can’t save any extra, it’s probably because they’re in an area and working a job that barely pays. Trucking right now doesn’t pay enough, but it pretty much pays what two full-time jobs would. So I think there’s a lot of drivers that are tolerating the trucking industry for right now. Until you can make about $800 a week. Take home at a full-time job trucking will still come out ahead a little bit. I’m in the south end I can find lots of jobs that would bring 500 and 600 home a week pretax. by truck driving I’m still able to clear at least 1000 after taxes. It’s not the greatest but it is what it is. And at least keeps me afloat. I think Americans are just scared right now so we’re not moving. Everything is sort of sitting still on the shelves or in the bank. for me as a company guy the worst part about driving even at a mega is that I’m being pushed to drive harder than I normally would. Almost every run I have is a 14 hour run. And I often go over my clock. And when I bitch and complain about it, they just say it is what it is. Get it done. I’m grateful for the money, but I do miss the Covid days and the pre-Covid days were companies were more safety conscious, the money was better, and Work felt easier
@Prodigal1
@Prodigal1 Месяц назад
Your dollar went further as the cost of goods and services were cheaper under Trump. Biden’s economic and environmental policies caused inflation, which in turn causes the Federal Reserve to have to raise interest rates to keep inflation from escalating further. His environmental, tree hugging policies have raised diesel prices. So, yes who’s in office does matter!

What I've seen so far in the past 3 years, is that the Broker and the freight companies both discovered that they can now get drivers to accept loads for bottom dollar and get away with it. I was working at AIFleet and the loads that I was starting to get where so bad that I felt my life was in danger! Sometimes these companies will simply go for the highest paying load at the expense of the drive’s safety! They're not the ones that are getting killed, what do they care! I'm going to be sitting out this freight recession until the money comes back!

I was just reading on Suppliers vs Consumers. So I think demand plays a bigger role. Politics aside. If a consumer doesn't buy the producer ain't going to produce. During covid the rates were amazing. Broker cut, double brokering or otherwise. Turn around grab another purple unicorn haul. Cause everyone was panic buying. (Demand) Then everyone who's looking to get rich decided they could jump in a truck in less that 1mon from zero experience and become a millionaire having never done the industry before. I still suspect those business losses in our industry are related to that.

Thank you so much for looking at the economy as a whole. So many people just talk about how the trucking industry cycles down and cycles up. Our opinion is that things are going to get a lot worse. The reason you're seeing a slight improvement right now is because people haven't tapped out their borrowing capacity... yet. The fed's ability to stimulate the economy with imaginary money is coming to an end. Their magic hat is just about empty. The u s currency is losing its imaginary value. We're looking for something that is completely recession-proof. Thank you for all the unfort that goes into your videos. Keep up the good work!

30,000 jobs gone from last year out of from some 3.5 million total jobs nationwide? That’s not even 1 percent of total capacity. In the recession of 08 and 09, they said there was 90 dollars available to be made out of every 100 dollars made in 07. And that was in a slump not seen in some 75 years.

Every time you see an intermodal train moving, you need to consider that about 400 drivers have been displaced by that train. The fact of the matter is that the train is far less expensive. Not only is the fuel used MUCH less, but the other overhead costs are much lower too. That $150K tractor is being replaced with a well car to move the container. The big difference is that the tractor will typically last 10 or so years and that well car will move every day for 50 years usually carrying two containers. It’s not the driver’s fault, and the politicians had nothing to do with it either. In fact, some of the long haul trucking companies are part of the blame. For example, Prime, Inc has a lot of their own intermodal refer containers moving freight long distance. At the same time most of their team loads have dried up. This is particularly bad for their drivers where Prime’s training regimen is centered around team loads. The politicians responsible for this is their own management. All Prime really cares about is that they are moving the same freight, roughly the same distance, for less money that goes into their pockets and saves their customers some coin too. Prime has a moratorium on hiring California drivers. Could it be that freight is being loaded on a train instead?

I go to work and make money and save it more and more just like companies do when they need you they keep you to make money and the day they don't need you they lay you off and they won't care about your situation then why would I care about someone else situation. I think it's a combination of all of the above. I get not wanting to turn your channel into a cesspool of political bickering, but "politics" has A LOT to do with it. Whoever is in charge has the power to push the economy in a direction through their priorities/policies, regulations and spending. Economy/consumer confidence good - people, companies making money = money being spent, goods to haul, building materials to be hauled etc. Economy/consumer confidence not so good - people not spending as much, companies cutting back, less to haul. Prices going up because companies want the same profit margin = people buy less. A vicious cycle. Cost of Oil (Effect of policy) drives the cost of EVERYTHING, from manufacturing to transportation. The state of the economy drives trucking, loss of capacity (not enough yet) and seasonality for the slight up tick 🙂.

Mist people starting little trucking companies dont understand that any company needs money in reserve to do proper business and just for 3 trucks about 1 mill or more us needed in reserve to run those trucks without a truck payment because saving from weekly grosses is a waste of time this is why most carriers are going out if business they are broke and being broke brings loss of revenue

Or do you want to be a real Player and upgrade to at least #150 Trucks and #200 Trailers, if you’re a small Carrier, I would EXIT STAGE LEFT ASAP. SMALL meaning less than #100 trucks and dropped trailers at different locations, Walmart requires at least 8 or more or they won’t even look at you. Plus the Federal Government is closing all the TAX LOOPHOLES for all small fish trying to swim with the big fish…. You gotta expand if you want to survive. IMO. (In my Opinion). OH, BTW, forget about the General Election. Worry about the MID-TERM AND LOCAL ELECTIONS, that’s where the real power is. The Presidential election is just a huge distraction, like a Clay Pigeon that distracts everyone from seeing the bigger picture. Good Luck from Bolingbrook Illinois.

As long as carriers continue to accept cheap freight, this cycle will go on forever. The shippers are loving having slaves work for them. They are laughing at how cheap some folks are hauling for. I work for a mid sized carrier/broker. We run 250 of our own assets/refrigerated. I primarily work in brokerage. I have recently submitted bid packages on numerous customers and my rates are spot on, as I know what it costs to run trucks. I'm winning zero awards, and not even getting in the ballpark. There is nothing that I see that indicates this will change any time soon. You've got people out here thinking that $2 per mile is a good rate. It was an ok rate 30 years ago when costs were 400% less, but if you are running for $2 per mile, look in the mirror, because you are the problem.

The thing about the economy is that these big conglomerates are trying to recoup their bottom line from the pandemic. It has to do a lot with price gouging from the top and that’s why the economy looks the way it does even though it’s getting better

Lots of people are complaining about Indians drivers cutting rates and that is why truckers are losing money which is not true. Something is called competition either you fight or fly. Indians drivers too buy trucks and they have to pay truck money and they buy like you diesel but only difference is they work more than you and never say no to work because they came from poor country and know the value of money that is why. So fight and compete to win.

You cannot possibly believe this. A policy of open, Demographic Replacement level immigration from markedly poorer per capita countries, with cumulative populations of multiple billions will not precipitously drive down the wage levels of .... what shall we call ourselves ... legacy Americans? When I was a teenager, immigration from, for example, India meant a few thousand scientists, university students, engineers, academic types, NOT millions (or hundreds of thousands, and growing) truck drivers and convenience store clerks. Enjoy it, relish it, laugh at our stupidity. But don't tell stupid lies.

The difference is foreign drivers have money coming in and pay cash for their trucks and have money for their maintenance and fuel in the bank before they start driving. Plus they get tax breaks and tax advantages a native driver can't get! With these advantages, they can take any load and work 24-7, They won't make much!

Except for regulations or lack there of, politics has NO effect on trucking. The SPECULATION around politics and what may or may not happen does, which is the same with most markets like oil. Why so many people talk and talk and talk about politics and toss it into everything makes no sense outside of a my team is best your team is worst shenanigans. By far the largest issue we have right now is the GREEDflation that is happening where companies have been given too much free reign and they are gutting the entire economy in order to have a higher quarterly profits. The freight market will not get better as long as these companies are going leeching everything away with these massive prices. We are already seeing companies like Walmart, Target, and Walgreens pulling back and luckily they will force many other companies to pull back too. The best way to show this is the auto market, there is no way a base level Ford F150 should have EVER been selling over 50k and even now in my area seeing prices for F150 XLT and Lariats going for 60 to 80 thousand dollars. This same thing is happening with food and other household goods with prices rising over 30% with those companies like Nestle etc CLAIMING costs going up, but looking at their filings we can see the only thing going up is their profits. If we have no money we can't buy and if we can't buy trucks don't run and until these companies are either reigned in by governments or they reign themselves in this market will stay a mess.

Completely agree. You hit the nail on the head. I'm just gonna add that this is why the stock market keeps going up and up with corporate profits reaching record highs, while we don't see our bottom lines improve in any way.

Agree. Republican and Democrat politicians legislate and regulate the transportation industry the same way. They go the same direction. They both continue to add burdens to our lives.When one party wins it doesn't undo what the other did. Democrats and Republicans are just a pro wrestling tag team disguised as one anothers' opponents.
