===========================================================================
In today's video, I'm going to talk about the Dutch Roll.
The Dutch Roll is a combination of rolls and yaws that occur at the same time, you have to imagine your airplane oscillating around your longitudinal and lateral axis.
In order to understand in full the Dutch Roll, we need to talk about Aircraft Stability.
The stability of your aircraft is the ability to come back to the previous state once disturbed by any outside factor or a Pilot Input.
An aircraft that has Lateral stability is able to come back to wing level after a right or left turn.
Directional Stability is the ability of your aircraft to come back to its previous state after a Yaw is induced.
The Dutch Roll affects mostly the Aircraft equipped with swept wings.
The Aircrafts affected by this aerodynamic phenomena have, normally, a system that corrects the Dutch Roll, this system is called Yaw Damper.
The Yaw Damper sends rudder inputs very quickly under certain situations when it detects the presence of Dutch Roll.
If your aircraft is stable it will correct slowly the Dutch Roll even without the Yaw Damper.

Hi, I don't know where you learned this, but it is a very confused explanation of Dutch Roll. The three lateral dynamic roots are roll damping, spiral, and Dutch roll. If you make a property co-ordinated roll to a particular bank angle, and stop it there, there should be little disturbance of the Dutch Roll root. If the spiral root is stable, the aircraft will slowly return to level flight. If the spiral root is unstable the aircraft will slowly diverge from the initial bank angle to a higher and higher bank angle. Typical times to half or double bank angle depend on the sign and magnitude of the spiral root, but it is not uncommon to be of the order of minutes. Increased aerodynamic drag on the wing only happens if the aircraft has a sideslip angle, and contributes very little to the directional stability - the primary contribution to directional stability comes from the fin. Directional stability is the just the fin pointing the aircraft into wind in the event of sideslip. It is always less than critically damped, because there is little natural yaw damping, so overshoots from sideslip in one direction to sideslip in the opposite direction. This is the only oscillatory lateral root, the other two roots, roll subsidence and spiral are single real roots. The only way to stop dutch roll is a yaw moment in antiphase to yaw rate. That is exactly what a yaw damper does. Attempting to stop it with roll control is hopeless, and probably counter-productive.

Thanks capt for this lecture abt, the yaw damper,my question is it possible to control Dutch roll by manual rudder inputs,and what altitude is Dutch roll more effective. Another question is can can yaw damper auto system assist in turn coordination without pilot manual rudder input,thanks.
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 10 месяцев назад
You are very welcome! It is very difficult to counteract the Dutch Roll manually, not impossible. The main Yaw Damper function is to correct the Dutch Roll..

K,I understand.

Just a little note, people should imagine the airplane in the silhouette as being seen from behind so the example makes full sense. My question is how much does the dihedral angle of the wings contribute to a Dutch roll, either to mitigate or to increase it?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 3 года назад
Hey, many thanks for your feedback!! So, the dihedral angle increases the lateral stability, however if your lateral stability is a lot greater than the directional stability the Dutch Roll will increase.
