Gluten has become one of the most popular buzzwords in food distribution. But what is it exactly, and why are so many people going "gluten free?"

I was diagnosed with celiac disease 11 years ago and back then it was nearly impossible to find gluten free food but now thanks to this trend, finding gluten free restaurants and gluten free food is way easier. The only issue with the trend for me is that people assume I do it because I think it's healthier and if I'm eating out they might not take my requests for no cross contaminants seriously.

Wow. They just acknowledged gluten intolerance. Mind blown. I'm inherently a skeptic and don't want to believe in it myself because I love eating it. I've tried on multiple occasions to stop avoiding it but I always end up barely functional. I swell up like I've gained weight and end up tired all the time, needing long nights of sleep plus a 2 or 3 hour nap in the middle of the day, every day, just to function. Also my allergies get much worse. Within a few days of clearing it out of my diet, I look like I've lost 20 lbs from the swelling going down, I lose an inch or two from my waistline, and I can easily stay awake and alert all day while sleeping 6 to 8 hours a night. I read an article about how if you're unable to digest the long proteins thoroughly, they tear through the lining of your intestine and get into your blood and can cause inflammation throughout your body. I wish they'd do more research about such things. I'd like to know with more confidence what's going on with this substance that's in so much of our food. Or is it new byproducts that are commonly in gluten-rich foods? I don't know. I wish I did.

Dude, you took the words write out of my mouth. People like to say that gluten intolerance isn't a thing BECAUSE a lot of people are doing it for the fad. Well, it is. I have the same exact effects as you. I don't die, but I get super swollen (not necessarily gassy), like a mild anaphylaxis. It really sucks. But I hate that people are bashing it and pretending it's not real, especially certain new sources and even that recent study that blew up.
@FlamingFreedomDotCom
@FlamingFreedomDotCom 10 лет назад
Ken Romanek I'm not sure why you posted that in response to my comment. I never followed it as a fad and I agree the fad is ridiculous. "Just go back to being constantly sick, man. It's just a fad!" Clearly, most people don't react the way I do, but for me, the effects are obvious. As I said, I have remained skeptical and wish I could eat it and attempted to start eating it again and always gotten sick again whenever I do. But what is unwise about avoiding it? The only thing I can think of is if people spend more money on expensive gluten-free alternatives when they have no gluten problem. I agree that's a waste of money FOR THOSE PEOPLE. But there is no health need for eating gluten-laden products. Wheat products don't contain any nutrients you can't get elsewhere. Personally, I hardly deal with any of those high-priced gluten replacement products like bread, crackers, etc. I just eat other foods instead that already don't contain gluten so it's not like it's costing me a lot. Side note--it cracks me up when I see products labeled "Gluten Free!" when the food is and always has been gluten-free, like bacon or guacamole. They're obviously playing on people's ignorance.

@Animefreak242
@Animefreak242 9 лет назад
This trend is ridiculous because of the issues it's causing for people who do have Celiacs disease. There is a general disdain from the ignorant, but there are a number of brands, most notably General Mills, who have come out with "gluten free" cereal. The only problem is that their "gluten free cereals" have rye and barley in them - that means they are NOT gluten free. This dieting trend sees us facing speculation and false advertisement.

Meh, there is just as much "hype" surrounding the "debunking" of certain trends as there is surrounding the trends themselves. I've picked up different "gluten-free" products that are often made up of an assortment of shitty ingredients, but that isn't to say that going gluten-free, (i.e. NOT eating "gluten-free cookies" But Rather, getting all of your carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables) is a bad idea. It is actually quite good for your health. I mean, what essential vitamins and sources of fibers are people on gluten-free diets missing out on, that they can't obtain through fruits and vegetables? The general consensus in this video, and in the comment section, as to the idea of gluten-free being risky, or laughable, is itself laughable. People love their breads and gluten-based products, and hell, have at it, I love my cigarettes too, but I'm not gonna tell people there might be a risk of not being able to shit right if they don't smoke'em (smokers will know what I'm talking about). The fact is that gluten may not be the demonized protein of death that some people make it out to be, but it sure as hell isn't good for you either, and when going gluten-free intelligently, it can be a benefit to nearly anyone's health.

Totally wrong information on intolerance. Not only can you get headaches or bloating you can get severe stomach upset swollen intestines that extremely extremely painful diarrhea vomiting. Shakiness . For me digesting gluten the size of a watermelon seed means 3 days minimum of being miserable . And it’s sent me more than once to the ER from bad diarrhea. I’ve been tested numerous times for Crohn’s and celiac‘s I don’t have it just a really severe intolerance. As we get older our body produces less enzymes and it becomes more and more difficult for us to break down the gluten especially in America where they over glutenize our food. Shame on his video for trying to dismiss it . Seven to almost 8% of the population eat gluten free. More than 1% do it because they have to not because they want to.

Thank you for helping raise awareness of issues surrounding gluten, however, I do have one correction to your video. In the video you state that Celiac Disease is an allergy to gluten. That is incorrect. It is an autoimmune disease, not a simple allergy where epipens or Benadryl can be effective for treatment. The only solution for improvement with Celiac disease is a strict gluten-free diet, with no cross-contamination. Simply trying to avoid gluten is not enough. There is not pill to reduce or cure.

I'd rather blame it on GMO's and wheat is one of those. Wheat is so different than it was 50 years ago. Grains and sugar intake seem to be a big reason why people have gained so much weight. Wheat is the staff of life but too much especially in todays form is the staff of obesity.

Same (I have it too)...but now that I found that the only thing I have to do is to not eat gluten...I'm just so happy. I'm happy because I found what made my life miserable (and decided to avoid it). It's bad when you have Celiac disease but you don't know that it's Celiac disease and you don't know what is wrong with your body. (That was me before I found what to avoid)

I've had allergies my whole life: sneezing, stuffed-up head and ears, asthma, the occasional rash. Then my body tried to destroy my thyroid (Hashimoto's Disease), and as part of my immunological-boosting regimen, my doctor told me to stop eating gluten. My allergies have all but disappeared. I wish I'd stopped eating gluten when I was a kid. That was some nice mansplaining on the video, though. But totally incorrect.
