Corvus Belli is launching a new version of their popular game: Infinity!
As they transition from N3 to N4 (rule change and major updates) they're starting off by launching Code One, which is a beginner's introduction to Infinity and the new ruleset for N4. Here we take a deeper dive on why CodeOne is so important and how they're launching it to give you an idea of what's coming.
While other videos will explain the rules and any changes I've noticed from N3 this video highlights what you can expect from CodeOne and why I'm so excited about it. If you want to learn to play the new version of Infinity from 2020 onwards then Code One is for you!
ERROR: Please note that in my video I say that Codlfront was the first army box in N3 followed by Red Veil. It was actually Icestorm followed by Red Veil then Coldfront and then Wildfire. I'd like to thank zhuala and Khaine8 for their corrections on this.

Will be getting Kaldstrom for the Yu Jing models with the hope of Code One and N4 taking Infinity to the next level, especially for new players. 👍🏻🙂

It is sometimes good to see it with fresh eyes. Hopefully Code One gets lots of new players into the game and then jumping up to N4 too.

Great video! I've been eyeing Infinity for about 12+ months now but always put off by what look like complex rules, Code One might just change that.

It’s well worth it when you do know the rules but the learning curve is incredibly steep. The quick start rules are excellent for getting to grips with some of the main rules 😁 I’ll try and make the full Code One rules as easy to absorb as possible so you can get into this epic game!

I have been interested in Infinity for about 10 years. Unfortunately, none of my family or friends are as willing to invest time in learning a game at this level. My guess is that I will need to play solo games until I have a solid understanding of the rules. Then, get others involved through the slow escalation of rules in the CodeOne starter box. I expect there is a local group of players - hard just now due to Covid-19. Thank you for the videos.

You’re very welcome and it is a challenging time to get into a tabletop war game. I had a similar problem. My 40k playing friends weren’t willing to make the jump so I found a small group of players through my local miniwargaming group and now we play weekly. It was great to meet new people and they’ve been very patient. There are a few Facebook groups where people will point you to local groups when restrictions ease.

@@the_infinitygamer Thank for the suggestions. My plan is to play a bit with the free download - I have plenty of miniatures to proxy a 3 and 3 battle. I will likely play several solo games to start to get the mechanics. And then jump into the CodeOne starter box. I love the terrain that comes in it. Thx for all the content.

I 100% agree - it's the "nested layers" which are the major bane holding this game back from being an intuitive experience. Rules, within rules, buried within rules. What does TO Camo do? What about Martial Art L5? What the Smoke dodge? Frenzy does what to your order pool? I should point out that I do not mind complex games, but it's the way such rules are nested and their presentation which can be difficult to penetrate. Some levels stack, other levels are simply chosen, without much coherency throughout the structure. I have seen Corvus Belli presenting videos for OpKaldtrom and Code One, and while the troop profile has been a little bit streamlined - it still references rules like Kinematica L2, or Multispectral Visor L2, which seems like its using the assumptions and terminology of the current system... nested rules. I hope though, I am wrong in this and either skills and equipment are more pronounced and streamlined, or at the very least, the presentation and rules writing is much better.

I also don’t think CB have helped the situation by releasing the new Koldstrom profiles for N3 when it was designed for Code One. I know the global situation has delayed a lot of things but it’s not helping people learn the new format. I hope Kinematica and things like that are simplified for Code zone, same goes for hacking. I feel some cool stuff isn’t used much because it’s too complex. This month should give us more answers as Code One nears release but I have high hopes!

Going to try using it as a way to grow our local wargaming group. introing people with n3 has always been tough, we normally start by doing a coop style game were a veteran plays half the army and the new player the other half vs the same on the other side of the table. So hyped for the Blue Wolf Mongol Cavalry, white banner looks awesome.

I"m definitely interested in Code One, even if my favourite factions aren't in it at this time. Thankfully hubby (who plays Ariadna) likes the new PanO minis, and I've a big thing for Yu Jing. Just a case of picking up the box, but I have to wait a touch longer since hobbying money is currently going towards the annual four months I can order paint in safely as well as general hobbying area organizational stuffs. I'm effectively a new player, as I've only really played a few games, but yeah, Code One definitely looks a lot more interesting to me, even if it's missing the factions and shenanigans I really like in N3. Besides, N4 and Code One are designed to coexist next to each other ^_^
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
That’s ideal! Both armies look really cool (no pun intended) and you can’t go wrong with a starter set that gives you so many minis. Code One is great fun, doesn’t really feel like a starter game and many people won’t bother progressing to N4 because it’s so good.

@@the_infinitygamer Truth be told, I'm kind of looking forward to getting into Code One, since it definitely has a lot going for it. I also suspect I'll get into N4, but if there are separate tournaments for each, I strongly suspect I'll wind up giving it a go in both!

I love CB but do have one slight criticism when it comes to CodeOne. I got into Infinity with Operation Coldfront and then had to learn N3 and yes, it took time and I still forget things. Putting myself in the shoes of a completely new player I have to question why the CodeOne rules are not in the Operation Kaldstrom 2-player starter box. CodeOne is a simplified/streamlined version of the rules, meant for beginners, on which N4 will be based on. So why then, does Kaldstrom only have a quick-start version of CodeOne instead of the full thing? It seems more confusing for newcomers if they have to download the CodeOne rules from CB later.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
The quick start rules are a little bit too basic and don’t cover a lot of things you NEED to know with the bigger rule sets. I don’t think it’s too much to add to include a basic understanding of crits or that an ARO can be more than shooting back. Those are such big parts of the bigger game that to miss them completely is doing the newer players a disservice in my opinion. There’s also a small risk of someone thinking Infinity is boring if they only read the quick start rules!

CB has never said N4 was a ‘huge improvement’ but that it would be a edition allowing consolidation and a chance to condense and revise what is becoming quite a chunky game over 5(?) years.

I simply hope all the nested rules are simplified! And that more info is on the models datasheet so you know what that model has without it being squirrelled away somewhere.

Infinity Gamer Nested rules will go, they were pretty much first on the hit list and we’ve seen this already from the c1 profiles in Kaldstrom.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
Phew! And what are your thoughts on the new crit rules?
@silencealpha
@silencealpha 4 года назад
Infinity Gamer Cautiously optimistic. I wasn’t a fan of the old crit mechanic, I agree with CB that it removed player agency just auto taking a wound with no roll, the old guard are just salty you can’t game the numbers with fatality any more. The game was headed towards a weird place with light infantry pieces like Sheskin mowing down everything in sight regardless of armour.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I agree fully, I’m not sure the new system will be better but very keen to see it in action. The current crit mechanic felt weirdly overpowered to me but maybe that’s because I had lucky opponents!
@gurtana

One private bug bear of mine is the ARM save roll calculation. It's weapon damage minus your Arm value and other partial cover mods etc, which you would assume is straight subtraction calculation - HOWEVER, it is not. It is actually, all the aforementioned, +1. i.e. you have to get more than that value subtracted, (hence +1), not just equal to and more than, >, which you just calculated. Equal to your armour does not help you. That is simply not intuitive when you consider that your other rolls such as BS rolls, PH, WIP are: EQUAL to or LESS than ,
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I also struggled with this. I actually do it the N3 way which is roll the dice, add cover, add armour and then see if you're higher than the damage. My small brain can handle that a lot better and it's the same result in the end.
@gurtana
@gurtana 4 года назад
@@the_infinitygamer Actually, it's interesting you mentioned this because the Infinity Code One logic is the best of all: It's exactly the same mechanic, but just approached from the OTHER direction: You are not rolling to "save" or "overcome", you are instead seeing if you are damaged by the weapon strength, you are wounded! So, if it's in the damage range of the weapon, it still conforms to the "rolling the value equal to or BELOW it". It's MUCH more intuitive and easier to do it from the Weapon's perspective - NOT the solder being wounded, to think of it from that point of view.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I always feel that because I’m the one doing to rolling on my hit model that it’s a roll to prevent the damage going through but what you say makes perfect sense!

Constant changes to a game is a red flag. Guild Ball died because of it, Malifaux is on life support, and Infinity is not far behind. The games are too fiddly and require too much esoteric knowledge to absorb. Even these neutered versions are too much of a time sink for most people. I do love all of the aforementioned games but most people don't have time to choke them down.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 3 года назад
GW games must be long dead if constant changes are a red flag. It depends on the frequency of the changes. CB have only published 1 FAQ on N4 so far with a second coming soon but that FAQ was a few pages of very obvious things. There definitely aren’t as many changes as I experienced in 40k but having not played Malifaux etc I don’t know how that compares 😃
