This video runs through all the rules contained in the Code One Quick Start Rules from Corvus Belli. These streamlined rules give you the basics of how to play infinity the game by understanding the core elements. If you're looking to learn how to play infinity CodeOne then this is a great place to start with basic rules covered.
If you want to learn how to play CodeOne fully then I've created a series of explainers to cover off each of the main aspects as standalone videos:
- How to build a list for CodeOne: • How to build an army l...
- Learn basic close combat in CodeOne: • Learn how to play Infi...
- Learn advanced close combat tactics for CodeOne: • Learn how to play Infi...
- Learn how hacking works in CodeOne: • Learn how to play Infi...
In this video, I explain how to play Infinity using these rules. This is a great starting point if you've never played Infinity the game and want to learn. From understanding the unit profiles to generating orders and declaring your actions I cover all the points you need - and a few that you don't!
Because I struggled with learning to play Infinity and then jumping from the quick start rules to the main rules I thought I'd take these rules and give you a few insights as to the changes you can expect when you transition from the Code One Quick Start rules up to Code One.
If you're looking at how to play Infinity Code One then this is a great starting point. Jump in and learn how to get started with Infinity the game!

I am considering to get the Starter Set, and this video is very helpful on explaining the ruleset! Although I was quite confused on 36:45 about the "higher rolls" rule, so even if a player made two successful rolls, and the opponent made one successful roll (with higher roll) it will cancel all of the two rolls?

A great tutorial, though your explanation of damage is not the same as the one in the book. In N3 you've added modifiers to the armour value, now you decrease the damage value of the weapon based on armor and cover so with a Combi Rifle with Damage 13, shooting at a Zhanshi in cover you'd end up with Damage 9 weapon shot so roll of 10 passes (13 - 3 for cover - 1 for the armor= 9 final weapon damage). It's the same thing in the end and practically does not affect it, but with Code One Rules it might be confusing for some to have a different explanation to it ;)
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
You’re completely right. My brain is probably wired wrong but modifying the damage always seemed harder than modifying the save value. Maybe that stems from not knowing the damage values of the weapons so always asking? You’re right, it does end up being the same result so while it differs from the official explanation it might help anyone that was confused by the rule wording (like me!).

I am a little confused. I get two HALF Orders (two short skills) in an activation. If my first Short Skill is "Move" and that triggers an ARO (they decided to shoot at me)...at that point I have to decide whether to use my second short skill to shoot back at that ARO or just take a free shot from the ARO model so I can use the second half of my order to do another short skill?
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 5 месяцев назад
You’ve nailed it! Shooting back would mean a face to face interaction where both players compete to see who wins that face off. Dodging as your second short skill would also create a face-to-face interaction. I made this handy interactions cheat sheet for N4 which you might find helpful. drive.google.com/file/d/1ppmf075ulv2E4z63h1k9uQAQK3oFvvYv/view?usp=drivesdk

Hi , great video, my group and i started with infinity one month ago , and today we had our first games. The main doubt that apear was this one . In face to face roll , is a cancelling system where each roll counts as a succes or a fail , and the saide with more succeses wins . Or is a higher die system , where the highest die that dont pass the Target Number wins. I got very confused and the rules dont make it very clear. I remeber that some guy in the store explain us something about it , but when we started playing we got really confused. In you video around 36:40 you explain that the single 5 die, cancel the dice with 1 and 2, and as the 18 was higher, the single 5 won the roll ( was the highest roll without breaching the Target number ) Is this ok ?? Also how many ARO can you get in a turn . Can i ARO when the oponent move, and the ARO when he shot me. I think that with you video you explain that the ARO are Calle it in the MOVE action of each activation . And as all the Activations start with movement that is the momento of the ARO. Is this right ?? Finally what are the benefits of Dodge, in your example the Dodge still make a face to face against the shoting, but in our game we understood that the DoDGE , if succesful cancel all shooting Thx for the answers , again your videos are amaing thanks for helping the comunity so much
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 7 дней назад
You got it! Any rolls over the target number (success value) are cancelled leaving only the successful results to work out. ARO ‘triggers’ start as soon as the trooper is activated. A unit might activate but not do anything (called an idle) it still triggers zone of control AROs. Dodge is like any face to face and can be the best option if your other ARO options (like shooting) have lots of minuses applied due to things like range and mimetism.
@HistoricalConflict
@HistoricalConflict Год назад
Also is it written anywhere that you DONT pre measure just asking because I am new and just started
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer Год назад
It does somewhere but it will probably be worded along the lines of “spend the order, declare first short skill, measure distance/range then resolve actions”. For a move, as an example, you can spend the order, declare a move short skill then measure to determine your route. You can take any route you like after measuring. What you can’t do it declare a move, measure the distance only to find out you can’t get to where you want to go and then change your mind and declare a shooting attack. Likewise with shooting you would declare a BS attack, declaring the target enemy and the weapon you’re going to use THEN measure the distances.
@ericswearingenmusic9967
@ericswearingenmusic9967 Год назад
So during an ARO. The reacting player chooses the point at which they shoot, and LOS is figured out from that position… but what about distances for gun ranges? Does the ARO order doing a BS measure their range from the point they are choosing for their LOS, or from the point where the active players movement ended, even if that new point changes cover etc?
@the_infinitygamer

Always the point at which you chose to shoot. Everything happens at that location; checking LOF and measuring distance.
@ericswearingenmusic9967

@@the_infinitygamer so from a practical standpoint, does a player stop another mid move for an ARO, or do you just kinda remember where they were during their movement?
@the_infinitygamer

You remember and declare it when you announce your ARO. You’ll be measuring for range so if you need the active player to clarify their route so you can declare when the ARO happened you can do that.

@30:52 So...the first short action has to always be move? If so, then it's very unfortunate rule for the activating player...Also cover counting for both shooting and saving seems way to powerful...If I already hit the target that's behind cover why does the cover (that I've beaten while shooting) still works as a bonus to the target...a bit overkill rule in my opinion...

I get lost when it comes to face-to-face rolls. So the Fusilier at 30:47 declares a move, the opponents use AROs to shoot, but the Fusilier shoots too? How? Does she get an ARO to their ARO's? Does she use her second short skill before the AROs to her first resolve? And what good does Dodge do for the active player as a second short skill if the opponent has already shot in response to the first?
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 2 года назад
Great questions! The order expenditure sequence is: Active player declares and does their first short skill. AROs are determined and declared. Active player declares their second short skill. If required both players roll to determine outcomes. This is called the resolution phase. Hopefully that answers your first part. Everything is happening at once so the ARO isn’t on the ‘move’ but on the unit’s activation. The move determines who can see that unit during its activation. In terms of your second question the ARO is resolved at the end during the resolution phase. Page 23 bottom left of the code one rules outlines the order things happen in slightly better.
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix 2 года назад
@@the_infinitygamer Thanks, that was the thing that clarified it for me! I hadn't realized that the active player shooting back was their second short skill. It all makes better sense now, as well as understanding that it's because the ARO might affect the active player's second choice.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 2 года назад
Absolutely! It’s popular in Infinity to try and force match-ups between units where your opponent has a few ARO options but all are bad. For example a unit with a hacking device and a shotgun walks into 8” range of a heavy infantry unit. As the reactive player you could dodge, but if they use the shotgun’s non-blast profile you’ll likely still face a couple of hits. Or they might hack you in which case your dodge is useless. You could reset to avoid the hack but then you’re eating a shotgun in the face. You could shoot back but then they’d use the template profile to guarantee a hit - or use the non-template version to try and beat your single ARO roll with their great range buffs. Basically, having your second short skill deceleration happen after the ARO gives you lots of options. That’s why it’s almost always better to move as your first (to see what’s coming your way) then shoot second.
@HeadHunterSix
@HeadHunterSix 2 года назад
@@the_infinitygamer so are ARO one per activation, or per action? In other words do they get a second ARO to your second short skill?
@kateslate3228
@kateslate3228 Год назад
@@HeadHunterSix ARO's are one per full activation per miniature. So the units that already got an ARO don't get a 2nd one, but if your 2nd short skill is another move that puts you into line of fire of a model that hasn't used an ARO yet, they get to use it

@@the_infinitygamer You are not demonstrating the "new" Code One starter rules available from not anywhere you would normally find it. downloads.corvusbelli.com/codeone/quick-start-rules/quick-start-rules-codeone-en.pdf were they have changed a few things to make it "more accessible" for new players. Armor rolls for example, have exactly the same values and effects but are explained and calculated differently. ;) It appears to be mostly word choices but I was going by your video label. Full Code One has been announced to drop on the 27th of... Spain? No idea how that will work out for you guys down there. That aside, almost everything for points would be on stuff like word choices. Which might be better for you on that side of the world than from where I am. But I try for very specific wording on topics that I know I will either have to build on, or expand as one gets deeper into the game. I did heartily approve of the various bits of "slang" such as ' straight rolls' at the various points to familiarize a new player so that conversations can followed. The alphabet soup of acronyms is best left to a separate video. ;) I try to keep in mind that I am not new to the game, and should check my assumptions a bit. :) Graphics are great, and the demonstrations are clear. :)

That’s incredibly helpful feedback Erich thank you! You’ll know better than I but there were very few changes I could find from the normal quick start rules to these. I think cover had to have a certain amount of the model obscured (like the 3mm x 3mm LOS guidance) and now there’s more specific guidance on moving through gaps, which I don’t think N3 had. I’m definitely keen to see how the new crits play out. Hopefully they’ll be as fun as the old system. Yes from our understanding Code One full rules will drop early Tuesday morning for us here.
@arrik1
@arrik1 4 года назад
@@the_infinitygamer I haven't bothered to parse the differences. I'm just going to take Code One, read it, and run off that rule set until N4 drops. The only one that really stuck out at me was how armor rolls are calculated. NOW they tell you to subtract the armor value from the strength of the weapon and then beat that adjusted number. Same probability just worded differently. New Math!! I think it's less speedy though, but all the ex-whatever game people can go through their mental gymnastics to figure out what they need to roll again. ;) It was (is?) one-third for N3. Given the boxed terrain probably meets the requirements anyways it was likely dropped. If you're out buying terrain you're probably done with quick start rules. Crits will always be contentious. I'm not a fan of the change but we'll see how they develop.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I suppose that the differences don’t matter too much at this stage. All quick start rules are different to the main rule but I will be keen on seeing whether there are major differences (other than crits) between N3 and N4. Carlos said in an interview a few days ago that states were too bloated in N3 so wonder if they’ll get streamlined. I don’t see the need to complicate the armour maths too much. You’re trying to beat the damage of the weapon. Whether that comes from minuses to the damage or pluses to your roll it ends up being the same outcome. Yes cover was one third and I wonder if that will come back for Code One full. Surely they won’t keep it so that any block equals cover?
@brandubh7046
@brandubh7046 4 года назад
A bit confused here. At 25:45 you show the Fusilier moving up to the cover. Then you say he is shooting. The first short skill was a move into cover (the barrier at 18:05) and should have triggered any ARO's the defending player wanted to make. The second short skill is the shoot action and should any return fire would be with the Fusilier in cover. If the Zhanshi wanted to shoot at the Fusilier with no cover negative, it should fire at the first short skill movement, not when the Fusilier shoots in the second short skill action, right?
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
That’s a great question! It resolves in this order: Active player declares first skill, in this case a move. They complete that action and, once it’s complete the reactive player declares their AROs. Any model that could see the fusilier during any part of its move is eligible for an ARO. They each declare their ARO. Which can be a dodge or a shoot (in the quick start rules). Once each model declares its ARO the active player then declares their second short skill. All of this technically happens at once but obviously the reactive player can only base their decision on the first short skill. Does that help at all?
@brandubh7046
@brandubh7046 4 года назад
@@the_infinitygamer I see what you're saying, but still wondering about order. At 20:51 you say if you don't declare it you can't use it. My disconnect comes from your 21:10 area where the ARO's are clearly split between the two short skill actions: The model moves (short skill) and draws an ARO. then the model moves a second time (obviously survived the first ARO) the model that just fired and missed is not allowed to shoot again, but another model may now make it's ARO based from end of first move to end of second move. Do you see what I am trying to say?
@funkatr0n912
@funkatr0n912 4 года назад
@@brandubh7046 You have the situation correct. An model may only make an ARO on the first chance it is given, and may only make a single ARO per model activation. So it could be possible at the end of the second short skill. But if a model declines to ARO at the first chance, it cannot choose to make an ARO during the active model's second activation.

Thank you for this. I still find it strange you have to declare a move when you actually arnt moving.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
It is odd but that’s only in the Quick Start rules. You’ll be able to do something else in Code One that makes a lot more sense 😄
@arrik1
@arrik1 4 года назад
You have to declare a _skill_. Because it's always Skill / ARO / Skill - Resolve. So if you declare the Move skill and move 0" your opponent now has to declare the ARO before you get onto the second half. Then you can pick something appropriate. You may have bluffed a model guarding an alley into Dodge to avoid being shot and you could then use Move as your second skill to cross a bit of open ground.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
Absolutely and with Quick Start only having the 3 skills it would make the most sense to declare the skill that gives your opponent the least information about your intent.
@shinankoku2

There is a lot about Infinity that may not seem to make sense if you read about it, but in play work amazingly well. Declaring a move and not moving (which used to be declaring an ‘idle’ in the old rules) is simply a declaration that that model is activating. You’re signaling to your opponent that they need to declare their Automatic Response Order (ARO)from eligible models. As the active player, you have an advantage: you get to see how defenders react before you take your second short skill. So, the defender declares their AROs, and then you declare your second short skill. For example - let’s say you have a hacker with a gun. You declare a move where you don’t move - an idle - your target has to commit to a reaction. Against a hacker, non-hackers have to reset to protect themselves. But if they reset, you can shoot them. If they shoot you, you might choose to hack them instead. If you didn’t ‘idle’ first - if you just declare a shoot or hack - you’re giving up your active turn advantage.

There are concepts and rules in Infinity that seem counterintuitive at first but, as you play the game, make perfect sense.

Can your opponent stop you WHILE you move and say like “pause there im shooting”
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer Год назад
Not literally but that is how it works. As your first short skill (for example) you move your intended route in full. Then AROs are declared. The player making the ARO states where along your route they’re shooting you. Just like how you can shoot from any point on that route if your second short skill is a BS attack. In short, no they can’t pause your movement but they can declare that point along the route as when/where they’re shooting you.

I could have sworn that in Code One it was stated that you can generate an ARO from any model that could see the move but you use the cover and range modifiers of the final position of the model. EDIT: Just double checked the rulebook... Maybe I am misremembering the rules with another game's mechanics.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I don’t think it’s explained in the rule wording and this was something that was explained to me in game m. My opponents are always very clear with their intent and will say “moving along here staying in cover the entire time”.
@JTMC93

@@the_infinitygamer I know in normal Infinity they apparently confirmed that it happens at any time but my understanding was Code One was handled slightly differently. It could just be me confusing rule systems as well.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
In the example on page 10 (order two) they measure distances at the end of the order but this may be because there’s no benefit to doing it at any other time. Doing it at the closest possible point, in this case, increases the chance of beneficial range modifiers. If you see in the example they give for order 3 on the same page the Pan O Fusilier doesn’t have the negative modifier for cover even though the Zhanshi reaches cover at the end of its move. Even though it’s not expressly state’s this would be because the Pan O player is shooting the Zhanshi before it reaches cover.

@@the_infinitygamer I think we can chalk this up to me miss-remembering the 50 some systems I play with one that actually makes me interested in playing Infinity again. Well that plus Corvus Belli usually needing quite a bit of F.A.Q.s or Tournament clarifications to actually not have odd questions pop up.

8th edition was a great time to get into 40k. I’ve got fond childhood memories of metal GW models so I guess the heavier material resonates with that. TBH I’ve never really understood the strong opinions on what somethings made from. So long as it’s detailed and enjoyable to paint it could be made from wood as far as I care 😂

That whole shooting thing really confused me. 40k is a ton simpler even with its plus and minus modifiers
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
It does seem strange that an attacker can roll 3 dice, all hit and have nothing go through because a defender rolled a higher dice but it does make for some interesting games! Modifiers can be complex to begin with but they’re your way of making it less likely for a defender to out roll you. There will be a few more modifiers in Code One (camo etc). Personally I find that the slowest part of the game - it takes me a little while to go “OK so we’re within 16” so that’s plus 3, you’re in cover so that’s -3, what’s my BS again?” I found 40k easier because a lot of the modifiers are only +1 or -1 and even though they stack the numbers are smaller. Maybe that’s the advantage of using D6?
@shinankoku2
@shinankoku2 4 года назад
Infinity is a more complex game, for sure. But because it focuses on a smaller conflict, there can be more complexity. 40k must be simple given the number of models involved. Once you play Infinity, the shooting becomes very second nature. I personally feel the tactics in Infinity are far more interesting.
@the_infinitygamer
@the_infinitygamer 4 года назад
I still found 40k quite complex but mostly because each army had quite different abilities. You could walk into a very painful trap if you didn’t know your opponent’s list well. At least with infinity all skills and abilities are pretty much the same and there are very few ‘gotcha’ moments.
