ISO means what? I thought it meant International Standards Organisation.Either way the acronym is of no use or help.It may as well be ISO = I'm Sensitive Okay

I have read that ISO acronym definition is International Standards Organization and when I searched your definition it came up with Nada! I would really like to understand where you got your definition. So I can sleep better tonight :) Is this a joke? if so how can I take it seriously? Sleepless in Tucson
@eagletheblue
@eagletheblue 7 лет назад
Learn to use search engines... www.iso.org/about-us.html He also pronounces it false, it's just iso, not i.s.o. Also not an acronym, it's the name of the company, read it in the about-us page.
@simonwalter7142
@simonwalter7142 7 лет назад
eagletheblue, it is called both I.S.O. and ISO and it means International Standards Organization. See Glossary section of "The Complete Encyclopaedia of Photography" by Michael Langford (Ebury Press, 1982): "ISO Initials of the International Standards Organization. The ISO film speed system is gradually replacing the ASA index. Both use identical numbers."

ISO controls graininess/noise. The lower the ISO, the less graininess. Graininess for artisitc effect can be added in post-processing, so I would always try to keep ISO as low as possible to go for as sharp an image as poss.
@pmelo1
@pmelo1 6 лет назад
ISO used to be the amount of silver in the films, when photo was made using traditional films. Now is just the sensitivity to light of the photo sensor. Originally, the granularity seen in high sensitivity films was caused by the amount of silver dot needed for the "extra" sensitivity

+Professional Photography Tips What I like in this tutorial about ISO is that you point the Dynamic Range loss. With high ISO the loss of Dynamic Range is more important that noise. Something that most videos about ISO omit.
@arthurhernandez9480
@arthurhernandez9480 8 лет назад
+Professional Photography Tips ok so i understand that increasing the iso causes photos to become noisy. However the picture you took at 4:21 with an iso of 12,800 looked great. how did you achieve this without all the noise in the background? was that picture later edited to remove the noise? sorry for the noob question, i am new at this. Btw, great content! Just subbed!!! Thx
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography 8 лет назад
+Arthur Hernandez Hi Arthur, cheers! And good question. The low amount of noise comes from a couple of things: one, camera sensor tech is getting better and better and so the images are getting cleaner. Two, because the sky is quite bright it helps reduce noise there because there's a decent signal/noise ratio. But in the darker areas the noise is more significant. Check out the lower corners and you'll see noise and color blobbiness there. And third, because this image was resized to 1080px tall the perception of noise is reduced as well. At full res you will see a fair amount of grain. Check the full-size comparison at 4:29 and you'll see it. Hope that helps explain!

Big question. Hoping to hear from you or someone who may know. At 4:25 you showed us an example/result of your shot with the stars and rocks. was this in one shot? or did you take one shot on the rocks and then a 2nd shot focusing the stars and then combining it?
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography 8 лет назад
+DannySkateTV Hey Danny, in this case it's a single shot, though I do often combine exposures in this way for the best quality final image. Cheers, J

Good explanation. I now can use the analogy with a modern electronic camera as the "video gain" of the camera. Turn the ISO down and you turn down the gain, less noise! Also less light so you can open up your lens further, getting the low depth of field that you may be after. Great, now I understand. Thanks.

OK as someone who took a professional class in photography ISO does not... I repeat.... does NOT stand for anything. the letters I, S, and O are not representing something. the word is ISO. also it was really cool to learn that's how ISO works. although my phone won't let me control the ISO aperture and shutter speed all together. only two at a time.

*ASA* Photographers have used many systems to measure film speed, but before 1987, ASA and DIN formed two of the most important. The older standard, ASA, used an arithmetic scale. Doubling film sensitivity also doubled its ASA number. *DIN* Created by the German Institute for Standardization, DIN used a logarithmic scale, so doubling sensitivity added 3 degrees to the DIN number. *ISO* The current system, ISO, combines arithmetic and logarithmic scales into a single set of standard, but its ASA-based arithmetic scale sees the widest use.

I really love all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. Your explanation of ISO is very good, specially for beginners to understand, but your analogy is off. ISO doesn't increase sensor sensitivity, ISO is applied gain. When you change ISO, you are changing how much gain your camera will apply to the image after it is captured by the sensor and not changing the ability of the sensor to capture light. Anyways, I love your videos.
