SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Jenna Belk, who we’re all happy to see return! Welcome back to the co-host chair, Jenna!
This episode (and all episodes hereafter) is dedicated to Ed Breyton. Ed has been an integral part of the ACA over the years and while he isn’t as active as he once was, he will always be remembered. Thank you, Ed!
Let’s get to calls. The first caller is Dennis in New York. He was in the hospital for a time (due to illness) and his Christian friends say his condition improved due to God. Thankfully he knows his improvement was due to doctors’ diligence and treatment.
Are rocks atheist? Oh no, not this question. Steve in Virginia switched up his original question from ‘What is the lack of belief?’ to the weird rock question...sigh. To answer the original question: for explicit atheism, it requires a conscious being who is able to determine and evaluate this. There’s plenty of philosophical ground to be covered here!
Hold up! We have a theist on the line who would like to start out defining God buuut, he segways and pivots to questioning the Big Bang cosmological event. What does this have to do with the definition of God? And we don’t have time for you, goodbye!
William in Australia claims to have seen his grandfather in a vision after he passed. We are sorry for your loss William. It can be a comfort to have these unexplained events occur and feel a connection to your lost family member. Instead of feeling as though it’s a message from them, think of it as a good remembrance of them.
Guillermo in California asks why we believe in history, but not biblical history. Jenna asks the all important question, “Why should we believe the Bible?” Also, history books don’t generally use metaphors within the texts.
Mike in Washington is wondering how to show other Christians the hypocrisy in the Bible and also how to reconcile it. This caller is a theist and this turns out to be a really interesting call.
Austin in Wisconsin says it’s ok to believe or not believe. Uh, sure?. He also thinks there is a war between atheists and theists. Is there really? He also thinks that we are wasting our time and it isn’t worth spending time on the truth. But we aren’t wasting our time, nice try.
Thanks for tuning in and not wasting your time! We are so glad you joined us today. Please continue to wear your masks. The world is better with you in it. See you next week!

@@Llamapuncher No holy person makes theistic claims, *GOD* is not the belief in gods, they're _different_ and *incompatible terms.* That uneducated Dillahunty doesn't know the difference and begs for big money, and then you saying "dense" (or "dunce") would be letting him out of his eternal sentence in hell for everything he's said and done. _He_ can't repent. By virtue of being in jail for almost a year, never sinned once in my life, I spent that year of my life in the company of murderers. A lot of common criminals in and out of jail they'd be there over a weekend or one week night and get released, a lot of "fed-kicks," but not the murderers and not what I pled guilty to, and so there we were. Love means never having to say you're sorry, and yet those murderers do say "sorry." But not Matt. What I liken Matt Dillahunty to, what betokens the reason for him existing, is standing the body of someone he murdered and being so blind to reality he doesn't even try to cover it up, and experiences continual delusion of what he is without apology. Murderers _know_ what they did, not your guy, not the guy you've attached yourself to he's so cowardly he's never been in the presence of everything he's arguing against. Not a lot of times, but I'm a worship leader. I've been responsible for leading The Children of the Greater GOD into His Holy Presence, leading all of us into The Shekinah Glory. But Matt claims he came from church and denies ever reality he uses as his statement of conversion, his claim to authority by *prior experience* he says he never had. Sorry for the length, please don't respond "tl;dr" just ignore this instead. I talk because it at least helps me.

Those definitions would carry the implication the person is defining an _explicit_ atheist; i.e. a person capable of understanding or conceptualising what a "deity" is, and then being aware that they don't believe it exists. There is such a thing as _implicit_ atheism, where you cannot assume they _do_ believe in a deity because it's not obvious they even understand what that means and they may not even have a brain in order to understand. The implicit/explicit does the argument more justice. "Someone" is a social construct, there are other species other than the homosapien that can hold beliefs. A dog for example can believe its owner is in a certain room to find that he/she is not there. Does that make the dog an atheist because it can hold a belief but shows no sign of worship to a deity? The answer is no because the argument also requires the conscience being, to be aware of theism before it can be rejected.

It's ridiculous that some creationist people try to play this weird semantic game... "If I can define atheist as someone who believes there is no god, then I can argue against the logic of holding that philosophical position and say that, therefore, atheism is wrong." Sure... ya could, but you'd be no closer to solving the problem you really want to solve. There's no way to prove "God" by discrediting the logic of "atheism." Even if all "atheists" were somehow wrong about the meaning of their own label (and they're not), the position "I am not convinced a god exists until I see some actual evidence" is still the entirely correct and rationally safe position to take. Neither the validity or soundness of the modern atheist position would change if you were somehow able to show that Matt or some other modern atheist isn't actually an "atheist" by your definition of the word. You'd still be at square one with respect to proving "God" or demonstrating that "God" is a belief we'd be justified in holding. You're wasting your time with this.

But it is important to understand each other when we use the english language and behind definitions, there is some logic. Besides what Matt said, I would say that I am not the one who invented the word god and therefore, it is not my burden to prove that a god does not exist. The inventor of the word god needs to be prove that such a thing exists. Otherwise, we would be living in an insane world where I wold have to prove that Vulkans, Klingons, smurfs and all sorts of shit don't exist and if I fail to prove that they don't exist, the theist would believe in them.

I am not the one who invented the word god or the one who defines it. It is some other guy who came up with the word god and even those guys are agnostic. Just because you are agnostic about smurfs does not mean that you can't draw smurfs, write stories on paper about smurfs, produce movies about smurfs. You can be an agnostic believer. @pan dimensional super being bojangles I would say that everyone is an agnostic. Even theists are agnostic. That doesn’t mean that an agnostic theist can’t claim that god is supernatural. Not having evidence does not prevent a person from claiming that a god exists. “dont have enough knowledge base to say any gods are supernatural or just part of the natural multiverse.” ==First off, there is no evidence to claim that gods exist. Therefore, everyone should be an atheist until sufficient and solid evidence is presented. Once we achieve that step, then we can talk about whether gods are this and that. “a god could be all powerful here, like a game designer is all powerful to his game creation, but be natural and limited in its own domain.” ==That’s possible but is there any evidence to support this idea? The only thing that matters is evidence otherwise, this is just ink on paper or bytes on a hard drive.

I used to call gnostic atheism strong atheism but now that I think on it some, maybe they aren’t the exact same thing. It's not wrong, it's just incomplete. If you don't find there to be any credible evidence for the existence of god, then you're an atheist, whether you're gnostic or agnostic depends on whether you want to go a step further and say that you then know no god exists. It is possible to find some evidence compelling without believing but at some point you tend to end up on one side or the other, either believing there probably is a god or probably is not. It's possible there are people that believe it's a 50/50 coin flip as to whether there's a god, though I don't know how many exist, but simply calling yourself agnostic doesn't say anything about what you believe. You might call this theoretical completely 50/50 person agnostic neutral but I don't think that represents the majority of people who identify as agnostic.

and keep in mind that while agnostic is generally accepted to imply not knowing about god, technically it does not include the object, meaning we can be agnostic about fairies, zeus, santa claus. Which, now that I include those as examples, highlights how silly it is to be agnostic on those, and so should be silly to be agnostic on god. In that regard, there is that oft-overlooked difference between the terms agnostic and atheist. When I was in the 4th grade, most of my classmates had stopped believing in the person who brings presents in December. I could not accept that they did not believe in that person. Theists are similar. They so strongly believe in their god that they cannot accept that there are people who do not accept that their god exists.

A theist is trying to shift the burden of proof, this is a game as old as time.
@trustinjesus1119
@trustinjesus1119 4 года назад
I don't accept I have the burden of proof. I'm therefore not trying to shift it. If you can't produce good arguments for the side you're on then I'll never be convinced by it. Dfpolis: Here we come to a fundamental difference in our world views. His world view is one which is disintegrating. He wants to set the natural world apart from the divine world, I want to integrate them. Open Philosophy is about having an integral worldview which is open to all of the data of human experience both scientific data and our spiritual insights. So my job is not to confirm his world view that there is a separation but to show that he is wrong and that what he calls naturalism is perfectly consistent with theism. And further what he calls the supernatural is part of the lived world. So, what I am trying to do here is quite different from what he expects me to do. He expects me to confirm his prejudice that there are lines of separation separating our human experience into incompatible compartments whereas what I'm in fact trying to do is to show the compatibility of the natural and supernatural orders. *Dfpolis R-9 Have Reason, Will Travel* R-9 A response to TheAtheistPaladin's (AP) "dfpolis does not pass the Epistemology challenge for the supernatural."

@@trustinjesus1119 I don't care wether you accept it or not. It doesn't change the situation as dictated by the laws of logic. Positive claims require proof, if you believe P=true you have a burden of proof, if you believe !P=true you also have a burden of proof because you are making positive claims about the world you live in and the nature of said world. The only claim on this situation that doesn't require a burden of proof is the one that makes no assertion as to whether P or !P is true. I.e. both claims =false. Did you follow me on that one?

@Bad oMaN Your criteria for something being real is if it acts in reality, and your stance is that nothing supernatural acts. I don't see how I have the burden (?). Every moment I experience the supernatural, the immaterial, transpersonal & transcendent personal experiences. I've been beyond death and back *_three times!_* For some reason that sparked a memory for me from a now racist Polish Joke Book. A rapist came upon a couple at the beach at night and drew a circle in the sand and said don't move from the circle while he proceeded to rape his woman. When it was all over the woman said, "Why didn't you do anything," and the man said, "I did, I stepped out of the circle three times."

So I'm a little confused, I've been calling myself an "Atheist" amongst my friends but an "Agnostic Atheist" among strangers to be more specific, and what I mean by "Agnostic Atheist" is that I don't believe in any god yet because I'm not convinced but don't know if there is any God. I thought the Atheism part is about belief and the Agnosticism part is about knowledge!? So am I making a mistake when I call myself an Agnostic Atheist using that definition?
@nuoiptertermer4484
@nuoiptertermer4484 4 года назад
Agnostic atheist is not a garbage label. I don't know what Matt was talking about there. It means you don't believe there's a god and don't feel sure there isn't a god. Also, lack of good evidence for something is enough to conclude it's probably not real. Because something being not real is the rational default until there's good evidence for it.

"I do not like A" can mean that "I hate A" / "I dislike A" OR it can mean that "I am indifferent to A". (= "I neither like nor dislike A") Colloquial language often assumes that everything is binary. Hence, often it is hard to show the middle position, because a negative statement is almost never interpreted as a neutral statement. And yet, negation of the positive can mean either "neutral" OR "negative".

I find the distinction between knowledge and being convinced of something a rather slippery slope. Because if I say I’m convinced of something than I do so from a position of a priori knowledge/experience either way. I’d rather would make a distinction by the level of confidence in a claim.
