I think they left out one of the most important features of the mesh.... It's not just a meshed "wireless extension", but can also be a meshed "access point" system. Here is where the system truly shines. You can use each unit in the mesh as a separate access point with wired physical ethernet connections and take full advantage of the system's ability to mesh SSIDs without worry of signal slowdowns from being bounced from point to point. A properly implemented mesh system can, in this way, replace BOTH wireless extenders AND multiple wired access points at the same time. [And to add, some companies have created mesh ROUTERS as well] EDIT: I suppose I can add that wireless extenders also have ethernet connections as well, but it almost defeats the purpose since they just become additional access points

I was surprised when I looked into this a few months back that there are not more options. It was between Google and some other brand that I had never heard of before. I ended up going with Google and although you can only interface with the admin panel through your phone and the fact that you can't do a whole lot in the admin panel but basic stuff, it has worked extremely well as far as having good wifi in our house. If you are someone who just HAS to have the control to manually assign IP addresses and change dhcp settings, then you probs aren't going to be in love with that part either. But as far as the mesh networking is concerned, it does great.

I can confirm that the Google Mesh router is amazing and well worth the price. Super easy to set up and you can even limit how long any device is allowed to be connected.

Ordered google's mesh setup not long after LTT had a video comparing different mesh networks. It's genuinely been wonderful and has faster speeds than my shit box router that was given to me by my ISP. I do wish they had more Ethernet ports though. Being able to reset the whole network through an app when I'm not even home is nice too.

As a good and not overly expensive alternative, get a powerline adapter and set up another access-point at that place with the same ssid and password, which won't be a problem as long as the original wifi signal is very weak at that place. If you need to, you can lower the power output of the og router antenna to compensate for the increased range of having another access.point.

So I have a question. What is the difference between wifi routers with seamless roaming and Mesh? In my home I have a Linksys EA8300 max stream router and RE7000 max stream range extender. It works great as it automatically switches my devices to the best signal in the house. So since mesh does the same thing. I am confused at what the difference between the 2 is and which one is better.
@NicoleMay316

Biggest reason I wanted mesh wifi was because I have so many smart devices. They clog up the airwaves for very small amounts of data and it means constant resets of devices. Mesh wifi is able to put one room of devices on one channel, easily reach those devices, and then use a different wifi channel to connect to the other nodes. It's sped up responsiveness and eliminated the need to reboot devices on a near daily basis. WELL worth the investment

Nice video, thanks! The most valuable thing about a Mesh WiFi is the *one* SSID. This is really essential. I used to use a Mesh system in which each unit plugs into a wall outlet. It was called Open Mesh. I hated it. It was slow, only about 10 MBPS. I now have a 3 unit EERO system, which covers my 3600 sq. ft home just great. it provides 50 MBPS speeed on my 100 MBPS Spectrum Internet. I could have got an ORBI but I'm glad I got the Eero.

just installed mesh network at home, with the linksys velop. it can actually communicate through ethernet cables, and thats how i set it up as the nodes where placed out of reach of each other. works very well, managed to cover the area in between the nodes so i have wi-fiin just about my entire home. One drawbakc to this though, is that you will use all your ethernet plugs in your first node, and only leave one up in the last one, should you actually need some cabled internet as well.

So a mesh network is basically always wireless? Because I just have multiple wired AP's around my house (6 inside, 2 outside) and devices switch seamlessly between them. I'm planning on building a new house and multiple people have told me mesh is the way to go, but if they all connect wirelessly, I can't see what the benefit is over a wired AP? Aside from that, they basically do the same thing, right?
@BrianThomas
@BrianThomas 4 года назад
So here's the thing. I can pick up and AC wireless router for $35. I'm not seeing the difference in setting up the same SSID on each router turning off DHCP on all but one router and bridge each router together via a cat6 cable connected to it's switch port to backhaul the data. Wouldn't this essentially give me similar performance? Keep in mind I don't have to put the router into any type of repeater mode or bridge mode in it's software GUI for this to work. I've been doing this for years and it's worked out really well for me. My question is how is this different from MES WiFi?

But which system is fastest? single router or Mesh? I have a TP-Link ax11000 and get about 800-900Mb/s download over WiFi at a distance of 5 meters on a 1GB/s fiber line and the lowest WiFi speed in the whole house is 300Mb/s in the guest room upstairs at about 10-15 meters from the router. Can any Mesh system perform up to that? If not, what's the point using Mesh?

Will a mesh network be good to provide internet for two houses? I live in Ireland in a semi-detached house, they are smaller than average American houses but bigger than apartments, my mother's house is just next door, her wall is 6 meters away (20 foot) from the closest wall in my house, we share the same driveway. I currently have a good internet connection of 500 Gb/s, but the router is not the best, I've tried an extender, it worked for a while somehow, but not anymore, there is also a maximum-security prison in town, they use radio jammers. I am upgrading my internet provider's router with an Asus RT-AC86U. My mother only needs to watch movies and web pages on the laptop. Will a mesh system be too expensive for that purpose, bear in mind, that my modem is connected to the opposite side of the house, so in order to reach my mother's house to the nearest point, it'll have to go through 2 thick concrete walls and one plastered wall, overall, corner to corner, the two houses covers a distance of about 60 foot.

Mesh Wi-Fi once and for all solved our Wi-Fi problem. We used repeaters for years and they never worked reliable in our three-story house. In peak hours, they were overwhelmed with all the traffic and crashed or at least slowed down dramatically. I can recommend Orbi to everyone trying to tidy up their Wi-Fi situation.

My house is so large the spectrum modem issued to me has a very week signal on the other end, so I need at least 1 extender. Next up, what happens when EVERY PHONE is a mesh router so a dozen people at a stadium connected to high speed provide everyone internet and calls/shares at the stadium start reaching theoretical levels without ever going through a gateway to the internet proper. Normal cell networks breakdown with more people Massively-Distributed-Full-Mesh-Networks (MDFMN)'s could make phone companies and ISPs irrelevant.

Get a dualband router, install openwrt or ddwrt, make a virtual ap, set the master as client and connect it to the main router, and set the virtual ap to copy the original one. Done. I've done this with a TP-Link 1043ND with ddwrt, works fine, but lan is way faster anyways. I'd rather have a wire across the house because its lots more stable, faster, and less latency. At the very least use one of those wall socket lan adapters if a cable along the walls is too ugly for you.

I personally just use 2 Unifi AC Pros. But this is an expensive solution and requires you to run ethernet cables to the APs aswell as have a POE switch or injectors Then set everything up either using a cloud key or hosting the unifi controller on a PC. Upsides i get flawless 5ghz coverage all over my house and can still get my 2.4ghz coverage few houses down the street

I'd like to think my house is standard, except it's made of concrete (cuz of where Iive). All that's really necessary is a router for upstairs, and a separate for downstairs. All these range extenders and mesh networks just make the setup expensive and to be quite honest, the two separate networks work perfectly fine for normal purposes.

Good old cables and access points are still far superior and cheaper. You can even use old routers as APs. That's what I do at home, a decent main router (Archer C60) and two older access points with DD WRT installed connected by cable to the main router.

Forgot to mention that this is only relevant to HOME network speeds; not internet speeds. Most US internet is so sodding slow that the 50% speed reduction on Wi-Fi routing through an extender wouldn't do more than add another ~80ms latency to the internet connectivity of devices using the extender.

BUY HOME PLUGS INSTEAD! for £30 you can get a kit from TP-Link with 2 plugs, one plugs into the wall socket with an ethernet going into the router, the next in any other room in the home with an ethernet cable going into your pc/laptop. the speed degredation depends on the transfer rate of the home plugs (some have very poor capabilities below 1mb/s) or if the wiring in the home is REALLY old and dainty. I use the same solution myself and between my home office pc, and my personal pc I get essentially the same speed from 2 opposing ends of quite an old house. At worst sometimes the connection will get iffy (i know the issue, its to do with the previous owner fking with the electrics in my bedrrom) but typing "ping -t (default ip address for the system, so for the 2nd one after the router connected pc itd be 192.168.0.1)" which constantly tells the device to keep communicating between eachother and that solves any outages. hope this random rant helps anybody trying to make a purchasing decision.

1:27: Wrong. This only applies to cheap Single-Radio (One Wifi-NIC) extenders. Dual-Radio extenders (Two Wifi-NICs) don't have this problem, because all this mesh access points are Dual-Radio. 2:29: Wrong too. Depending on the configuration menu, you have just to set a different mode to be able to create a second WLAN with the same name (SSID) and you don't have to play with two networks. 2:56: Wrong again. The protocols for this are 802.11r/k/v and your extender has to support this, together with your clients. Btw. "Mesh-WLAN" is just the fancy name for these protocols. If your devices are supporting these protocols, you don't have to pay the premium for "Mesh-Marketing" devices like the ones from Ubiquiti. In summary: disappointed about this video, the other ones had better researched topics.

Sorry for such a nercro thread revival, however, if that's the case, what do you look for then in a range extender that could act like a mesh wifi and make it act like one?

@@redmurder13 Depends what you have. If your "base station" supports these protocols, it probably can act as an extender too. If so, buy another one, tell it one of the wireless network cards shall connect in "Client mode" (most call it so) to your base station, the second network card must now be configured to provide a WLAN with the same SSID/Network name. Last thing that needs to be done, is to enable "Fast-Roaming" and you have a DIY mesh wlan.

And here I am, in Tokyo, looking to get myself a mesh network. That was surreal lol. For the record, I do not live in a studio apartment the size of a sardine can.
