What is Oil Canning?
Causes + Solutions For A Common Metal Roof Problem
www.westernstatesmetalroofing...
Have you ever seen a metal roof that looked like it was wrinkled? This is known as oil canning and it's common on standing seam metal roofs.
What is oil canning?
Oil canning is an inherent characteristic of light gauge metal roofing with broad, flat areas. It looks like the flats areas of the metal panels have wrinkles or waves. It's not a defect in the metal and will not affect the performance of the standing seam metal roofing. It's only an aesthetic issue and is not grounds for panel rejection.
What causes oil canning on metal roofs?
1. Expansion and contraction of metal
2. Overtightened fasteners
3. An uneven substrate
4. Underlayment that is not flat
5. Settling of the structure itself
Standing seam is an example of a metal panel that has flat surfaces and is prone to oil canning. Here are the best ways to avoid oil canning on your standing seam metal roof.
1. Hire a contractor that specializes in standing seam metal roofing installation
2. Purchase a standing seam panel that has clip relief profile
3. Add striations to your metal roofing panels
What are striations metal roof?
Striations are a pattern of linear grooves on the flat surface of the panel that run parallel to the standing seam.
What are stiffening ribs?
Stiffening ribs are low profile indentations that are added to the center of standing seam panels.
Metal roof striations vs flat
Striations don't prevent oil canning, but will disguise the appearance of oil canning. The striations on the metal roofing panels will eliminate all of the flat surface. Even if you have oil canning it will not be noticeable with striations.
Metal roof striations vs stiffening ribs
Both options will help to disguise oil canning. Striations are better because they cover the entire panel. Stiffening ribs only cover a small section of the metal roofing panel. Adding either striations or stiffening ribs will not increase the cost of the metal roofing panel.
Types of metal roofing
Pencil rib panels have narrow circular ribs that look like pencil idents.
Bead ribs have rectangular idents and have the widest ribs.

When you attached the top panel to the deck you cause stress at the top. Likewise z closures attached at top to the decking does the same thing. Like how can the panel contract and expand if you are holding down either end of the panel? One soulution is have furring strips. This keeps the panel from heating up because of the ventilation underneath. Plus you are securing the z closures on the metal panel and not the decking. The panels should be able to float. Engineering makes it possible to keep the panels from flying off.
