Im having the Kenyan purple tea now and my leaves are full, not broken. I bought the tea from Granville island and its not bitter. The color is quite pretty. Maybe don't use the gong fu method. Why don't you try brewing for 2-3 minutes with less leaves.

As somone coming from the cannabis growing world i can say its exactly the same that Purple varieties are also only ever belinging to one of two categories: the True purple pigment ones and the Stress induced Purple varieties. i didnt ecpect it to work the same but a suprising amount of things work similarly between these two plants.

I think you were the first one to make a RU-vid video on purple tea. I love it so much I’ve been drinking it daily for a few months now and it’s amazing. PS: if you mix lemon or lemon juice in it turns pink and is really cool

I heard about purple tea for the first time today from a tea blog. When I googled it, it said that purple tea comes from Kenya, and the only option that shows up is Noble & Sunday's Kenyan Purple. But I'm so glad you've made a video about this and talked about the Chinese people teas, where it comes from etc. It's also so valuable to be able to compare the Kenyan and the Chinese one. I wanna buy your one. Lol. Do you ship to NZ?

Hey Don, I just received Keemun tea from your shop and I have say, i been drinking tea for about 15 years (primarily tea bags) and I never tasted tea with that much complexity and character.
@MeiLeaf

Wonderful, Keemun is one of those traditional teas that is often ignored nowadays by teaheads (in favour of oolongs and PuErh) but it is a really special tea.
@MeiLeaf
@MeiLeaf 8 лет назад
JB 6000 Yes if you find a proper traditionally made Keemun it is a beautiful tea but there is a LOT of keemun out there for the mass tea consumer. Dianhong's are wonderful but can sometimes be all appearance and little flavour. Unsmoked Lapsang's can be incredible and probably one of the most delicious black teas when made properly.

Purple tea is a type of tea with buds that color yet it can be made into a green oolong or black form (not sure about puerh) although the former three. I think that the Royal Purple Black tea sounds like it can be quite good

I think the purple teas I've tried were similar Don. I won't disparage the tea as a class, but there are so many wonderful Chinese and Taiwanese varieties in your shop, I'll stick to those!

I buy a purple tea from a Chinese bakery and it tastes sweet. Do you sell any leaves to make purple tea and what do you recommend to use as a sweetener?

Hi, I enjoyed your video. My question is does it mean there is not tea that actually turns into purple when brewed? All the teas you have shown are kinda brown. I am from Kenya and I agree the purple tea is not that interesting. However I will try some from other countries and compare.

i think alfred peet would like your presentation. i happen to have gotten tastings with him, and his real love was tea. seriously. his eyes would roll up in his head tasting tea, and he did it hardcore, letting it cool off andsmelling the leaves separately after brewing.

Hello Don. I am intrigued at this [purple colour - actually nowhere I have seen this colour, may be I am colour blind. I have been to Yunnan province and I think I will go there this winter / sprain. Could you please let me know which prefecture you have got the tea from. Thanks in advance.

dislike, reason you brew tea for less than a minute , is that best way to get the flavor from tea , I think you were inclined from onset to discredit the kenya tea .I tried it for 5 minutes with better taste better result. just thought you were biased. my opinion

Can you do a video on rooibos tea? It's an herbal one that I've been seeing a lot online. The only herbal tea's I drink though are ginger (I make sure to get ones with just ginger and some sugar or honey, since it doesn't need anything else) and citron which are more or a heath type of drink than a proper tea drink. Most of the other herbal ones I don't like because I don't know what's in them really. Ginger though is my go to when my allergies get bad, that and ginger candy if your throat is a bit sore helps a lot too. When I drink them I don't consider them as "I'm drinking my tea now" and have regular tea after. What are your thoughts on the different herbal ones?
@MeiLeaf
@MeiLeaf 8 лет назад
Hi Dahlia. We have many herbals including Rooibos and they are all pure and healthy. Some of our favourites include Baby Leaf Kuding (great for calming) and Amachazuru (for general health and immune regulation). We will plan some herbal videos to taste and discuss. chinalifeweb.com/shop/category/floral-and-herbal-tea/

Ahoi Don, so did I understand it correctly: There are three types of Purple varietals? 1. Zi Cha = Turns purple naturally but only smaller portions because its not forcefully produced so 2. Ye Sheng which is naturally wild purple leaves and buds 3 Zi Juan which is a hybrid between made by man two different types of plans Great video by the way ;)

i just tried the Zi Ya from Nan Nuo Shan from your Store , looks like it's different to the one from Da Hong in your video. The Nan Nuo is not getting orange or even purple at all, but keeps a pale yellow color with greenish tones. Nan Nuo Shan is located next to Menghai in the South of Yunnan, i can not find "Da Hong" in the North of Yunnan on a map like you said in the video. There is Da Hong Mao Shu in the Lincang Area and Da Hong Yan next to Pu'er, both in the South of Yunnan. So i guess the reddish color in the wild tea from "Da Hong" can not come from the purple buds itself like you say in the video, as the Nan Nuo Zi Ya Tea from your store has no red tones at all.
@MeiLeaf
@MeiLeaf 8 лет назад
The area is 'Dehong' and this is where our latest batch of Purple Bud is from and in the video. But you have spotted an error on our labelling which is showing where our previous batch was from so sorry (I will get that change immediately)! The one that you have is the same as the one in the video though and should be similar to the colour at 13:05 when brewed quite strong Gong Fu Style.
@xraystylex
@xraystylex 8 лет назад
oh ok :) that makes sense. but the colour stays pale yellow, no tones of red at all. even after 10 30sec brews with boiling water.. but doesnt matter, the taste is as described and very good. :) maybe it's really an old batch from Nan Nuo.

I once had a purple pu erh tea and the liquor colour is indeed purple, the taste is mostly floral like a flower scented tea. Does that means they added colouring to the tea??

You might be referring to butterfly pea flower which is not a tea. It us very purple colour.

I noticed this video is in the page where you can buy the tea but as I was skipping trough it to see the tasting part what comes firsts is saying he doesn't like it which I later noticed to be referring to the Kenyan sample but don't you think that people might get the wrong idea if they don't decide to watch the full video and just skip to the part where he tastes it?

Why not just cut the clip like you did on other tea pages with longer videos where more than 1 tea was reviewed? You could put the cut clip as an unlisted video.

how to know if its a quality leaf and if its any little secret special on lemongrass , hello from mexicali
@MeiLeaf
@MeiLeaf 8 лет назад
For Jasmine tea you first should judge the quality of the tea base by trying to choose tea that is whole leaf and not broken up too much and is made from young leaves and buds. After this you should judge according to the smell of the Jasmine. It should be naturally scented and at least scented 3 times with fresh Jasmine flowers. It is a matter of preference if you prefer a strong or light jasmine aroma compared with tea taste. For Lemongrass it mostly comes down to aroma. It should be made from fine and thin lemongrass hearts (not too much of the harder outer shell) and should be a very bright aroma.
