I am blown away by your outlook on cars and all of the annoying people! I fucking LOVE it. Got sent here from DEBOSS Garage channel when you helped them dyno their Audi engine. I will continue to watch your stuff because I want to learn more about the LS motor. Ive always been a Honda guy and am just recently getting into Chevy. Im gonna watch your videos and learn as much as possible.

Thanks for the back story on Sloppy Mechanics. I'm just a old gear head who is to broke and injured to do the shit anymore, I love living vicariously through the stuff you do and love the well why the fuck can't I do it that way attitude. People have gotten where they have to have everything laid out for them and won't try things. I played music for years, you'll see a guy who tried and practiced for years and they'll get a you tube comment 'you got tab for that' because they want to learn it in 5 minutes with no effort.. Keep doing what your doing man, thanks for that.

Matt... Been watching your shit for what seems like forever. I am one of those "old timers" but have learned a shit ton from you as far as efi etc. What I have always loved about you, is your the hell with the status quo and do more with less mentality... You are a man after my own heart. One bit of advice that I can give you. There will always be the doers and the dreamers. The dreamers are almost always paralyzed by the old paralysis by analysis syndrome and won't do anything unless someone holds there hand every step of the way. Try and understand that. It will lead to way less stress. You on the other hand... Are a step above the doers... You are a pioneer, a explorer... You are wanting to be on the fore front of discovery and understanding what makes the world go round and are not afraid to question the status quo of why things are done. Basically... You are my kind of person... "Smokey" Yunick was my generations ultimate personification of that... Not sure if you are familiar with him but if not look him up. Along with Don Garlits, "Grumpy" Jenkins, Micky Thompson and a many more... They were the pioneers and explorers who forever changed the face of racing. The one thing the world will ALWAYS need are those kind of people in whatever field they are in. So never stop questioning things or pushing the limits of of your knowledge or lose that desire to learn. They will take you far and are the cornerstones of what pushes us forward. Oh... One other thing. I can't help but smile every time I see you and Jamie together. It's one of those things were you go... These two were so meant for each other.

We have an old guy, Ed Lilly, that does our collision repair for our fleet, and he does things the same as you! He'll throw a race motor together with the old gaskets, old parts, everything, but it'll still kick ass. His shop looks like time stopped in 1950 with all the old fashioned cars and trucks he's always working on in there. Total old school wrenching! If you're ever in the Lehigh Valley, PA and need body work he does great work and he still charges 1950 prices, you just gotta get passed the ghetto look of his shop.

Your work is the most interesting thing on the net right now. I've been pretty frustrated looking for a decent car show without shitty metal music, loudmouth hosts and formulaic series structure and incessant ads! So happy to find your stuff - kinda like being your mate in the garage and helping you out! Wouldn't be surprised if you end up on Discovery channel in a year or two! Am also Hospital based and love cars but I'm a doctor. Be cool to meet. My truck is a GMC Typhoon and am in the U.K. and you are motivating me to get back into it. Will be very interested to see how the Holley works out for you. My 4l80e and my tuning are the main issues now. Cheers for the inspiration and the fun videos. Keep up the good work. Maybe buy a GMC Typhoon if you need a challenge ;) And if you are in the UK, beers are on me mate!

If i had to leave my little bit of advice, it would be, OEM has better R&D and money than the aftermarket. And always stretch your rod bolts not torque.

This is the first video I got to listen to. I'm on the hunt for someone to help with an HP tuner tune because I have a truck 5.3 with a BTR stage 3 cam supposedly has CNC ported heads with stainless valves and Corvette Springs. Super Rich at idle doesn't really seem insanely powerful for the camshaft change. I don't drive it though LOL can't see the drive. Have my own RU-vid channel as well I do and have done a lot of the same stuff you guys have done according to your video in my past just not currently. Looking to get into it again. Would love to pick your brain about a few things. Maybe point me in the right direction on a video of yours I do not have a wide band O2 sensor I figured there should be a way to get a good tune in this truck without having to spend even more money on an O2 sensor

My Dad was an ASE master tech back in the 70s-80s and pretty much refuses to work on anything newer than 1984 because he doesn't understand how it works. I try to tell him that there's nothing magical about how pistols and camshafts work in EFI motors and that 90% of shit on a 1990s+ vehicle is exactly the same as it was in 1965. After watching me work on "modern" shit for about the last 20 years he's finally starting to get his courage back up. Don't be like my Dad.. ;)

hey Matt, i guess the hardest part of boosting a ls motor is not the cam swap, valve springs, hot side, hold side, converter, diff or transmission most people can get that done but what is the scarier part is the wiring and tuning aspect so when you begin turboing that 2500 silverado that you have planned for the future if u could go deeper into detail than what you did in Jaimes nnbs. what scares me more would be like setting up bigger fuel pump, 3 bar map sensor or injectors because i know you have to calibrate them and if you never seen it done it can be uneasy.

a lot of the questions are because people can't afford to buy 5-6 different turbos, as an example, to get what they want. or can't afford to buy 4-5 different converters to reach that goal. I'm building a 5.3 now, all I want is around 350 whp out of it. Not gonna have a turbo or anything. Just the sloppy stage 2 cam, pac 1218 springs. Gonna throw it in the truck and find a base tune that'll make it run and drive. That's my goal for now. Maybe later i'll turbo it and all that. But for now, I am just shooting for running and driving. P.S Sorry for posting on all these old ass videos. But, I'm using you to build my truck.

Been watching your videos for years...just got around to this video, you summed you all up. You struck a nerve. I bought a 2004 wrx brand new...never again. Did every free mod I could from the knowledge I acrued over the years working on my 66 SS nova. I sold the car exactly for the reason you mentioned. I had hit a wall trying to get information on modding that thing. Had a lot of fun with that car. Now Im pulling a 500 hp small block 406 out of my chevy II and putting in a 5.3 with a 78 mm turbo. Thanks for all the info. I actually used one of your tunes on my 200 Silverado. I converted a 4.3 to a 5.3, wont turbo it because I don't want to upgrade the 4l60 to an 80...Cutting to the chase, like your work, good luck with it all and thanks for sharing.

FIRST TURBO!! TBI TIME!! Have a challenge that you will like! I bought a Chinese turbo kit for a TBI Chevy 350 in a 1994 GMC 2500 two wheel drive. I will be throwing fuel at it untill I get somewhere with it. I will be tuning it with a wideband and a secondary fuel driver from "Split Second". It supposedly can trick the map sensor "which I have replaced with a 2bar" so It doesn't pull fuel out on the TBI set up! I have lots of flow from some no name aluminum heads on a stock bottom end and a Holley projection intake. I have two threaded 1000CC injectors that I will be blow fuel straight down the TBI'S throught. Matt have any ideas on how to keep the TBI'S computer at bay while I'm slamming boost down it's through? I don't want to throw a rod or burn a hole in a piston the first time I run the thing on BOOST. Thanks for the help in getting the old truck going!

So you found, that you can reuse the head bolts? The reason I ask, is it my understanding, that the threads on the head bolts would stretch out and change shape, to lock in and hold in the threads of the block. If you have found that to be untrue, that would be extremely interesting to know. Because that is what I was taught as a mechanic starting out in a shop on the vortec engine's. Although, I have known people in other shops reuse the head bolts that they removed from the motor. Now rod bolts I always thought they could be reused. Since if it does break, it isn't something one has spent a ton of money on. Besides, the new bolts or studs could, just as easily break and then a person is out a whole bunch more money!
@SloppyMechanics
@SloppyMechanics 7 лет назад
i have years of 800+whp builds with reused head bolts, and head gaskets, they are issue free when re used
@TheCrewChief374
@TheCrewChief374 7 лет назад
Sloppy Mechanics Well that is excellent to know, that what I was taught as a young mechanic, isn't exactly the case. Not that I wanted to buy into that idea. Nonetheless, when it is someone else's money, I did what they wanted. Now for the head gaskets, I can see where a set for a LS could be reused. They appear to me to be a much better gasket, than say the old head gaskets for a older Chevy V8 engine per LS! Since I have seen stock head gaskets for the older blocks reused, and begin to leak once it got up to operating temperature. Besides, I honestly love the LS platform much more than the older style engines. Which if I could legally marry one, I believe it would be a more cost effective marriage! 😋😁

@blackbirdxx928 7 лет назад
You just know what shortcuts work for you....note; that the way you do things might not work for someone else.I re-used the head gaskets on my 427 boat motor...020 steel shim coated with 'brown' brush on sealer 6 times .There is an advantage, no re- torque. And i changed the block on that same motor and re used the head gaskets, the main bearings and the rings....note:my boss (i work in a motor shop building off/shore off/road motors) did the line bore on both blocks and honed the cylinders on $60k worth off sunnen equipment so they were as round as round needs to be. You would do well to learn some diagnostics. If you manage to trash the rings enough to hurt power it will push big time blowby out the breathers.....slipped cam chain? The teeth on the upper gear would be half gone. Easy to check, cam spec will tell ya when intake valve is supposed to start to open. Check #1 depending on cam..between 35* btdc and tdc. Dont know how many teeth on upper gear but on BBC one tooth is about 9*.I have advanced/retarded cam timing on my own stuff and 6* is barely noticeable...although it could change cranking compression quite a bit. And compression test/leakdown on a regular basis, if cylinder seal decreases and you dont catch it, your tune latest change might have been it the right direction but exhaust valve seats taking a dump made it look like you went the wrong way. Not much into reading plugs? Is that a snap on torque wrench? You set and pull to a particular torque but you never check the readout that shows actual torque...Maybe audio/video is out of snyc because it looks like you were still torquing long after the tone sounded...Might be a good idea to get more consistent with the speed you move the torque wrench.....probably not a good idea to teach bad habits.

I can completely relate to taking what I love and turning it into my job. I was an artist, became a graphic designer (production artist)... completely ruined art for me. Then, we bought a kennel (we did rescue work and trained dogs for competition) and built a great business... but I no longer train and compete nor do I raise dogs for service anymore. I would never make this mistake again, making what I love what I depend on to make a living. Getting paid for something I enjoy, no problem, but I would never make it a primary source of income. Keep enjoying what you are doing with this channel, your enthusiasm is infectious and people appreciate it (but dont feel pressured to produce ;)

Nice Matt. Guess I'm gonna have to just pull my LT1 setup and cram a 5.3LM7 in the bitch. Picked up a complete one and a disassembled one the kid was gonna "build" for 300$ so I got spare rods and slugs ha

finally watched this and I fully understand your IT job for the day job and the cars become a hobby desire - same boat as me. pushing 37 years writing various software especially linux systems. Started working on two vehicles (86 FJ60 with a SBC and 1984 K1500 with 5.3) and found I was having fun learning and re-learning this stuff. So much admire what you have done. Hence I am watching and doing what I can now

Thanks for the overview, I enjoyed it. Awesome builds you've done, I really enjoy all your videos. You should toss in some links to your wiki page in all descriptions of new videos. I didn't know you had one at all until you mentioned it in a video. Awesome resource. Can't wait to start my LQ4 build.

Chance George I also had no idea of the wiki, and prepared myself to watch all of Matt's videos. I then heard him refer to the wiki and was like "holy shit, this guy has laid EVERYTHING out!!! He's like the budget LS Messiah, sent to teach us all" VERY FEW people would be willing to do what he's done, and I hope he knows how appreciated it all is!

We watched the garbage on TV 10-15 years ago because that's all there was. Last time I tuned in to HP TV I almost threw up with all shameless adds. Now that I think about the money they would throw in a short block and compare it to just the things you pulled off inside the gas tank of that truck, I know where I belong. I don't know diddly dick about any of this turbo or EFI tuning stuff but after binge watching the colorado saga I'm intrigued as hell. Thank you for the entertainment and knowledge!

I plan on building my first LS turbo car soon, I rely on the information you give on your channel. You have taken a lot of the fear out of doing it plus you do it on a budget that most people can afford. I have built many engines in the past but none with computer tuning. I look forward to moving into the new generation of horsepower. I will have to watch your videos over and over until it is done. Thank you for all the information you put out there for everyone to use.

Curiously what's you take on outcomes/respect? I've got a 2.0l 93 Mx6 with a very sordid history. There's nearly zero aftermarket support and nearly everything has been custom or sourced from other cars (Mazdaspeed Proteges, etc.). I'm like 99% self taught. Nearly everything on the car has been replaced or modified over the last 10 years. I've broken and replaced things multiple times while "building the car" an while I had hoped building the car would have been a straight line, it continues to evolve and change. Having started with the knowledge of replacing a valve cover gasket, an alternator, and a battery; I've now built a car that's limited to the power levels of the installed parts (Currently limited intercooler, turbo and injector size). I have a goal of 400whp for hill climbs and eventually road courses, in a 2800lb car with me in it. Currently on 10.5psi and minimal timing we made 258whp and 271tq before a grounding strap broke under load and chipped a valve on the way out. Car made 103whp and 114tq stock. Should it matter that the car doesn't compete with other japanese makes (500+whp stock internal cars)? Or should I continue to enjoy the fact I've done the work and learned in the process? Or better yet does the 4cyl guy get a seat at the table? :) Thanks for your MS series, I just got a Ms3pro Evo to replace the MS2 V3.57 as it was beginning to lack the expandability I needed to go fully sequential, and run all the IOs I wanted.

I just found your channel a few days ago and I'm glad that I did. I've always loved cars and I recently decided to do an engine swap on my Volvo 940, having never done anything like that before. The new engine is in and I'm nearly done but I am already planning another swap for that car when summer comes back around haha. Why you do what you do and how you learned really resonates with the way I am, just exploring possible solutions to see what works. Also, it is extraordinarily important to me to do as much of the work I can myself. I could've gone out and bought a 940 turbo, but that doesn't carry with it the same feeling of accomplishment at all.

Wow! Just came here for the first time from “Regular Car Reviews” or whatever and realized where you stomp around when you talked about mounting hills on 309 in the Winniebagel. That’s junkyard heaven for sure. I still come down from NY, especially since my 13-year-old Outback now qualifies for representation at Harry’s Hazelton. So you guys were, like life, itself, generated from technically intelligent DNA assembling with Dopey Duncan (ask your grandfather about him) knucklehead DNA in the primordial soup of the sea of broken cars. I will wager that Winnie must have been special on the hills with the climbing lanes approaching New Ringold. Awesome fun!

Brother, I am 46 and been into cars my entire life. At 3:30 or so you hit the proverbial nail on the head with how I've felt my whole life. Those fuckers DON'T KNOW what they're talking about and that IS EXACTLY the reasoning for the secrecy. 3/4 race cam my ass!! There is a guy at my job, 59 years old that is so full of shit...not a bad guy per se, just a huge yarn spinner. He uses that and tells an around the world tale just to say one sentence- the POINT of the story. There are three kinds of people essentially: the secretive dumbass; the boastful dumbass; and us. The ones that try out stuff and talk sensibly about it, share what they can, parts included. Money, "rare" parts, etc. You can't take it with you. Might as well share the joy. By the way, I have an "80 Malibu. She is going LS someday. I will feel better about it thanks to your channel. My sister inlaw lives in Wilkes-Barre so maybe once she is all up and running I'll come there from my NY home and burn up some PA asphalt. Thanks for what you do!
