As social beings, we’ve been meeting, connecting, and building relationships with others for thousands of years, but it’s only been a few decades that we’ve been studying the profound effects of Social Capital on our lives. Looking at your connections as an asset class gives you a whole new perspective on how you approach networking. Building your social capital is the most effective way to create opportunities for yourself to achieve your desired success.
As a third-generation entrepreneur, Reza Varzidehkar knows the value of connections. As a first-generation immigrant, he was faced with the reality of starting fresh and building a network from scratch. His quest to differentiate himself during professional interactions led him to create OVOU, a smart business card that lets you share your contact information with just a tap. His mission is to inspire people to put themselves out there, make new connections, and grow their network. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

A quick summary: 1. People connect with who you are not what you do. 2. It is all about the value you bring to others. 3. Audit your network

Three books will determine ones success. Address book- who you know Check book- where your money goes. Calendar - where you time is spent. These three areas will determine ones success. It's PROVEN over many many books written by Many successful people

I'm annoyed at the trend to commodify social interaction and treating social interactions as means to an end. The concept of social capital was not meant to be used as an excuse for the entrepreneur mindset.

YOU are the architect of your environment. The world around you is the map your behavior follows. Design it so that success meets you no matter which way you turn. Your environment will determine behavior, not the other way around. As you look at the things around you, ask yourself if it meets just one condition: will this steer me towards my goal?

This was great. Thank you. I always thought it was superficial to run off your credentials and resume at networking events. I look forward to being my authentic self and engaging with others at networking events in the future

And LEARN. WTF? Self education is the best. There was a understanding that after 10k hours of study on a particular subject that then we can become a PhD in that area. Break that down backwards. How many hours of study to be Competent? And the Great. Then excellent. Then a teacher? And so on?

I struggle to find anything to offer of value to new people I meet. I am what I do in many respects, but I recognize that I have other components. Finding value in thise things is very difficult.

Unfortunately I hate talking to and being around most people. So for me I gotta make it in life without having a circle.

Social Group? Are the people you socialize with there to see you succeed? Are they there to bring out your best. Or a Bar Stool Buddy. Don't ask a poor person how to be wealthy. On and on

this is like fast food. you wear a mask, go meet people, give them some value in exchange for some value, kick out the low value ones then rinse and repeat. pretty pathetic tbh. you DON'T need social capital to live a successful and fulfilling life. i have a successful career that makes more money than 90% of people and I did not have a single connection.
