It's hard to whittle them down. I went for all those non-gothic SF minis I've not ever got round to painting.

Just make one crew for every idea you have. It's not like you're painting hundreds of minis just for one army. And if you do have lots of minis painted ... then the bad guys are done already :D

For me Stargrave is fantastic. Just like Frostgrave I can let the children explore different universes and their imaginations. For me I wish it was around when I was a teenager. Joe has tapped into the classic idea of story telling and the possibility of building space crews from classic science fiction is unbelievably satisfying. Thank you.

Having played Frostgrave and Rangers of Shadow Deep for a few years now, I like how familiar the system sounds but at the same time, how the differences (firearms, powers, etc.) are going to switch things up and keep it fresh and challenging. I know that some folks might not like the 'openness' of Joe's setting, preferring a more nailed down or official place to go play in, but to me, that's one of its biggest appeals - I get to make it all up however I want (using whatever I can put on the table) and just see how it all goes. Man, I'm stoked to see how this Stargrave week pans out and just how many ideas I come up with or just how many times I change my mind on what kind of crew I want to run!

I've only played a few solo games so far but I've really enjoyed building gangs for the different marks you have to take out. I love how open the setting is to interpretation. Finding miniatures to represent the creatures for random encounters was also a lot of fun!

from the stuff people have been posting the Stargrave facebook group, it looks like most players are using the idea of having small shuttles represented on the table, which are just a way to get between the mission and a larger ship somewhere else (in orbit, parked halfway around the planet, whatever.) sorta like how the Serenity in Firefly had those small shuttles that docked to it and they used for getting around, even though the ship itself was capable of landing on its own. which honestly is probably the best approach to having an actual ship on the table. big enough to be interesting, but small enough that it doesn't dominate the play area

I wonder if scenarios could be like Ben was saying about you being boarded, where you create a ship that approaches boarding in different ways where you just roll on a table based on how you equip your ship (boarding shuttle, shooting out engines, electromagnetic pulse, etc.) and how much you know about a potential target to prep for it. Or it determines how you set up and potential limitations on the enemy or yourself (how much time to raid a warehouse, covering fire, med evacs). This could then translate to you getting boarded while at the bar or hijacked while in deep space, or even trying to get it out from an impound lot. Just keep it focused on your ship layout and tables and don't create ship-to-ship combat.

This is going to be fun! I haven't read to much of the core book yet but, the pics are really good. I've started to assemble a few minis (2 crews and 2 pirates) and looking at various terrain pieces and scatter terrain and preping the assembly of 2 Mantic Enforcer Arbiter Interceptor that will find some service!
