Our friend Mike Roen is getting prepared to take us, step by step, through the process of a S&S performance cam upgrade on this M8 Softail. Whether your bike has a 107, 114, or 117 cui motor, this procedure pertains to all M8 Harley Davidson motors-Touring and Softail.
Why try and find the best cam for M8 114, 107, 117? The main purpose for a cam upgrade is to gain more horsepower and torque but there are a number of other advantages. The hard facing on S&S 475 cam gear lobes and lifter roller surfaces is far superior to Harley Davidson’s. The S&S lifter guide is a cast aluminum piece, as opposed to Harley Davidson’s stock, plastic guide. Also, the S&S inner cam bearing is a full roller bearing which is far more durable than the factory caged bearing.
The stock, solid pushrods will be cut out with bolt cutters in order to avoid the need removing the fuel tank and dismantling the rocker box assemblies. The stock pushrods will be replaced with the S&S Quickee adjustable pushrods. A high volume S&S oil pump is also available, but in this video we will be using the latest oil pump from Harley Davidson.
Service manual instructions give a number of measurements needed to set the correct depth of the cam bearing. We will be using a cam bearing installation tool from Jim’s Tools that sets the correct bearing depth without the need for measurements. Mike will also be using a specialty tool for locking the crank and cam gears together for loosening and tightening retaining hardware.
Follow along with Mike as he takes us through the procedures for a cam upgrade on the Milwaukee Eight. You decide if it’s the best cam for M8 114, 107 or 117. Watch Full Install here: www.fixmyhog.com/videos/m8-ca...

I have a high compression (113 c.i.) , 2000 Springer with a carb. I want to change the Harley 266 cams to the stock cams. Are there any after market cams that are very similar to stock cams?
@FixMyHogfreechannel
@FixMyHogfreechannel 2 года назад
If you prefer to run stock cams, we would suggest purchasing stock Harley Davidson cams from the dealership. Best to run them with a hydraulic cam plate. Otherwise, we would go with S&S 510 cams for mild, bolt in, cams. www.fixmyhog.com/videos/cam-chain-tensioner-shoe/

Question. Opting to replace a camshaft (primarily to improve the sound, torque etc) Will that be a problem for the engine 10 years down the road? Is the engine designed for these types of after market parts(s&s cams etc) and that it won’t lead to other problems? Pls do advise. Tq

Good question, but I don't really care about 10 years...down the road, that's alot of years of good riding, q stock motor could blow before then, and if we aren't ready to put the latest great motor (ie: 131, or whatever it might be) in our bikes, 10 years from now...we are scared little whimps..and I ain't it.

Most of the wear items are replaced if you do this job in its entirety. OEM things like the plastic lifter cuffs, the cam bearing (as pointed out in this video), and the pre 2020 oil pumps are all regarded as parts prone to failure. Any one of those goes bad, there's a good chance that your entire engine could be smoked. If you're concerned with things like bottom end issues, the only thing that may sacrifice longevity is if you're now inclined to constantly beat the snot out of your bike, lol. Frankly, you're better off doing these mods to improve the long-term survivability of your bike vs leaving the stock junk in there. The above-mentioned parts are basically ticking time bombs.
@freebehindbars8654
@freebehindbars8654 8 месяцев назад
My bike runs better, cooler and produces power easier… I’d say it actually improves longevity. That’s definitely depends on the lift, since most use stock springs. I’ll never own a stock HD again.

S&S 475 is king 4 a reason.
@jerrym2321
@jerrym2321 3 года назад
Thanks Mike, good information......I noticed that the specs on the 475 have different timing for the front and rear cylinders (for example, the front cylinder intake valve opens and closes at 6.2 degrees and 27.2 degrees respectively, but the rear cylinder intake opens at 2.2 and closes at 31.2). I'm pretty sure contributes to its very aggressive lope, but this is the only cam that I have found that does this......can you comment on why S&S chose to do this? I have a suspicion that the hotter temps of the rear cylinder may be part of the reason, but that would beg the question, why doesn't everyone else do this too? I can't seem to find any good explanation for it or why such a design is better than cams that keep valve timing the same for both cylinders. I'm still tossed up between the S&S 475 and the new Woods Performance 22XE.

@@FixMyHogfreechannel Yes, I've read every word. Unfortunately, that page appears to be quite out of date....Nothing on the 475C (the page presumes that the 475G is only available), and not a word about the 465C or 550C cams. Also nothing explaining why the timing is different for the front and rear cylinders. Nothing on the page leads me to believe that it has been updated since the M8 came out.

@@FixMyHogfreechannel No complaints with S&S....they have gotten a lot of my money over the last 50 years! But this time I went with the Woods Performance 22XE. Still using the S&S cam plate, oil pump, and tensioner though. But I'm still curious about the timing of the S&S cams and the reason for front and rear cylinder difference. Maybe someone out there can shine a little light on the subject.

Depends on what type of riding you do. The 465 is a great low end torque cam but it drops off where as fhe 475 comes on alittle later in the rev range but has a flatter torque curve.
