This week on Tactical Rifleman, we are looking at what the best ammo and gun for home defense is, it's another video in our “Home Defense” series… better known as the “Wall Video.” After our last Wall video, we had a TON of comments from viewers, pissed that I didn’t use THEIR favorite hollow point or THEIR favorite rifle/pistol round. There were also tons of requests for other variables; such as “block in front of the wall,” “multiple-drywall walls,” and the “just do a plain gel block video” request. Well, we listened, and we have filmed several new wall videos, and have a bunch more planned for the near future. No, I’m not going to shoot my pretty walls with a .50 BMG. Well, maybe not for a while.
So, this week I tried to check a few of your request blocks… We are going to shoot the bad guy, with a bunch of your favorite Home Defense rounds, and then we are going to measure the over-penetration through that typical “American” drywall interior home wall (if they over penetrate).
Now, I did mention “your favorite Home Defense rounds.” Remember, in our previous “Wall” video we had already tested Buckshot, Birdshot, Slug, 9mm Ball, and 5.56mm Ball. So, we didn’t need to do any of those again. You, the commenters, listed a ton of other home defense rounds… mostly Hollow Points. Did we use YOUR favorite? Actually, I picked these rounds because… First, the 12 Gauge Buckshot is being used as a “constant” and because half the planet hates me for saying “I don’t like shotguns.” Second, to represent “Hollow Points” I decided to go with a standard jacketed hollow point, and I decided to go with .45ACP. Why 45? Well, because it is actually going to over-penetrate less than the same hollow points in other calibers. That’s right, the smaller 10mm, 357sig, .40, and even the 9mm all penetrate deeper than the .45ACP (with the same bullet design). As for the other four bullets (9mm & 5.56mm), I decided to pick ammo that I wanted to see. Remember I said “YOUR favorite Home Defense rounds”? Well, I am hoping after you see WHY I picked these, that you just might change YOUR mind about what ammo you want for home defense.
We love Inceptor Frangible ammo, and we have a Promo Code to save you a bit. Also, G-9 makes some really great ammo, especially for EDC. Their pistol ammo will go through the windshields and car doors, while still limiting over-penetration when it finally hits the bad guy. Magic? Nope, just a company thinking outside the box and applying physics to solve life’s problems. This is my new EDC ammo.
So, give this video a second view. I guarantee that you will pick something up. Yes, it is boring, no pretty brick walls or Tannerite. There is no jackassery for viewers to bitch about. Raw data. You be the judge.

Shortening the barrel wont change terminal ballistics at that range.
@FreedomInc
@FreedomInc 5 лет назад
@@lanenicholson3712 it actually does. Normal velocity from a 20" barrel is 3250fps. In general 5.56 must be in the 2700fps range or greater to fragment correctly. A 10.5" barrel has velocities from even the best match cartridges around 2250fps to 2350fps max. Telling someone it doesnt matter will get someone killed because it does matter. What matters most is the projectile design. Fmjbt will tumble and fragment at 2750fps,but not at 2400fps. If someone is using a 10.5" barrel for home defense,use a round specifically designed for the velocities that can be expected. G2 research R.I.P. 5.56 is absolutely one of the best rounds for the home defense AR pistol and will fragment at the lower velocities of these shorter barrels.
@furryhatsgunsunicorns3219
@furryhatsgunsunicorns3219 5 лет назад
@@FreedomInc There are actually quite a few tests showing decent tumbling and fragmenting of various .223 and 5.56mm even from a 7.5" barrel with most of those under 62 grains easily passing the 2200 fps mark. With a 10.5" barrel that definitely is no problem. Look up the PoBoy Special's channel and you'll see what I'm talking about. As for the G2 RIP round, it actually with its 65 grain projectile, is a bit slower than most but still would probably be fine in a 10.5" barrel. But really any 55 or 62 grain soft point hunting round in .223 would do fine. Where you run into trouble is the "varmint" rounds mean to rapidly disintegrate as these tend to have low penetration. Ironically the faster the velocity, generally the lower penetration they get as they disintegrate faster. Right now I'm trying to find more tests of the Federal American Eagle 50 grain varmint round through shorter barreled AR's to see if inversely , these get better penetration with lower velocity. But until then I'm just sticking with Remington 55 grain soft point rounds. They're pricey but worth it. For practice I just use cheap Federal XM-193 FMJ (which also performs reasonably well in gel even out of short barrels).
@FreedomInc
@FreedomInc 5 лет назад
@@furryhatsgunsunicorns3219 I agree with most of what you said. If you read my comment it was based I the "fmjbt" projectile. Spire points will mushroom even at super low velocities. They fragment at these low velocities due friction and mushrooming. They aren't actually fragmenting they are being torn apart. The light varmint rounds disintegrate due to twist rates multiplied by velocities,or rather the 2 combined. The lighter the projectile in 5.56 or similar also means its shorter. Contrary to popular belief twist rates aren't a factor because of weights of the projectiles,rather their lengths. But since you have a max and minimum diameter weight is relative to length when comparing a certain type of projectile. With a 35 grain varmint round,really someone should be using a 1.12 or a 1.14 twist rate barrel. My point was that a fmjbt will fragment apon impact at 2750fps,but not at 2350fps which all you are going to get from a 10.5 inch barrel. I guess no matter what firearm you have,just do your due diligence so you dont poke self dealing holes in people before they kill you.(not meaning you personally)

Primary tool for a Home invasion type scenario is my CZ Scorpion braced pistol with a Surefire light and a 35 round mag of 124gr. Speer Gold Dot +P and Federal HST 124gr. +P. No shotgun even available inside the home. Thanks for the great advice.

You should use the ammo that meets the FBIs guidelines, not one that doesn't meet the 12 inch minimum penetration standard in calibrated gel and can't even do it in uncalibrated clear gel which typically shows greater penetration than the real stuff.

I've always liked my HD set up. Steel door that open up into a steel cage that traps anyone who makes it through the steel door. From there I have an M-134 set up behind a sandbag wall that I can meat grind the cage animals with. From there I have a dead mans switch on me that will detonate the 1000 lbs of Tannerite I have stock piled in my basement. Its a layered defense that I feel is a decent escalation of force

Not everything needs to be Pauls Meat Target with high tech fleece bullet stop™. That clear ballistic setup with cloth and drywall gives a good visual representation. Those two .223 seems super effective, massive damage, no passthrough and possible to make super quick follow up shots, compared to a shotgun. Totally agree, this is properly the best & most practical, home defense weapon if bad guys are trying to get in.
