Hey all want to add that I don’t go into every narrative detail in the souls games because the video is 40 minutes long, that being said I don’t explain the dark sign curse. What I’m trying to say about the dark sign crucible is that it’s the age of man pouring into the tree. Thanks.

Don't know if you go into this later as I am currently watching your Elden Ring collection, but I would look into the inorganic chemical interactions between Mercury and the 3 principle metals: Gold, Silver, and Copper; as it can be used to both destroy/tarnish/corrupt these metals as well as purify in certain processes. I feel that the white or dark fire or the Godslayers/black knifes is meant to be this Mercurial process in one of it's forms. I also think Marika realized her shady dealings and attempted to atone with the breaking of the Elden Ring, so there's that hole to dig.

Watched a recent video that shows how the nameless eternal city is directly beneath Leyndell, in the space where the void is behind the main gate we can’t enter through. It lends even more credence to the idea that the tree Siluria is guarding is the primordial tree that preceded the erd tree. I know it’s been 7 months since this video was made but just wanted to leave this here for anyone interested.

Another thing, I think that Omens are related to the Crucible and should be considered as a literal omens (signs) for the coming back of the crucible state. Morgott beside having horns have also a tail and Mogh have wings.

I wonder if the horns of the Omens could eventually grow into a tree-like form like the Ancestral Spirits' antlers and maybe create life in some form. It could explain why the Dung Eater refers to it as a blessing, although his ending doesn't sound good at all. The fact that both Morgott and Mohg can grow dragon-like parts could mean they eventually could become dragons. Since both have royal blood might mean dragons were some sort of royalty.

The only only(?) Obvious connection between the "Primordial crucible" and the omen/misbegotten are the the 3 crucible talismans. And the theming seems to be potentiality: alloy in a crucible is pure potentiality. A blend of everything that could be, while at the same time being nothing. The chimera-like omens remind me of that; undifferentiated features.
@nomattr
@nomattr Год назад
@@theologamer but misbegotten etc, are differentiated, just composed from different parts. From esoteric point of view each part, ie eagle wings, lion limbs, snake scales are related to a specific element (wind, fire, water) so those creatures are more "perfect", as the elements are manifested and controllable. From the point of view of Elden Rings law of casuality thats bad (at least from the fundamentalist perspective), because progress (casuality) means separation (as everything came from one will and has been separated to many), union is kind of regression.

I think the black gooey shit that Elden Beast plunges Radagon into at the end of the game is related somehow. Marigon goes in as a person, comes out as a sword, and then comes back out as a person again, and the beast itself seems to be made up of it, just a nervous system covered in goop. I think it's some kind of primordial life soup that mutates and changes anything it touches.

I don't think the black goop is connected to the crucible. the only other times we saw it is inside the towers, ascending and descending, and when Ranni brings the player to the lake with the moon in Rennala's fight. Finally got around to watching this! amazing exploration of Miyazaki’s themes. I have thought for a while that the Crucible was some sort of real, tangible container and that it might have taken the form of a tree - and your video hardcore cements it for me! I am no expert in the souls series’ lore, so your insight and analysis of repeated motifs is so valuable and I think makes it pretty unarguable that there was a great big ol tree that was the crucible before the Erdtree came along. I’m damn impressed! Loved it!

I'm late to the party but firs FS game that introduced trees as a symbol of prymordial life was in King's Field IV (or Return to Ancient City). Then Demon's Souls used slightly similar concept later. I agree the MIyazaki games don't share the same Universe or share it in any meaningful way. But there are themes and ideas repeated. The whole output reminds me of an anthology TV series like Twilight Zone, Black Mirror, or Del Toro's new Netflix show. Exploring similar themes at a multitude of distinct angles without being constrained by an overall connecting narrative is often the best way for creatives to get the most out of their abilities in a constrained (often by budget) medium like TV or AAA games.

Excellent video! Both very fun and enlightening! So I suppose the lesson is that the tree is the symbol chosen by Miyazaki to be the crucible because by being a Tree of Life/World Tree whatever is prepared in its interior (the new order) is then distributed to the universe through its veins, branches and roots. This also connects nicely to the importance given to the Erdtree's sap as a medium to spread the Golden Order's blessings and to the burning of the Erdtree also serving the purpose of "heating up" the crucible before preparing the next age. PS: Are you going to make a "post-mortem" video like for Godwyn? I have a couple of questions but they mostly relate to the Misbegotten and Placidusax and their connections to the crucible.

Awesome! 1- the community has noticed that there is an awful lot of Legendary Greatswords being carried by Misbegotten warriors, do you think this has any particular significance or relation with the crucible or how the Misbegotten came into contact with it? 2- Placidusax is said to have been Elden Lord in a previous age, does it mean he had his own crucible to "forge" his age? Is there anything in Farum Azula that might be it? And come to think of it, might it have some relation to the isolated tree in Deeproot Depths you pointed out?

In the section about the demon of hatred, he didnt cut off his own arm. He was about to become shura but ishin noticed and cut his arm. Whats going on with the sculptor is that due to the countless foes that he has killed he has accumulated a metric fuck ton of negative karma which is why he makes buddhas. Making a buddha is supposed to take away some negative karma or give you some positive but the sculptor is sooo far gone that he can only make wrathful buddhas and has made countless of them. Eventually the wrath, hatred, negative karma, which is signified by flame overtakes his body and he becomes an oni. This is how oni are usually created in japanese stories. Ok, as i understand that The Tree in each game represnts a big THING that can influnce the world around it thru its roots. Having your will in that tree allows that you to shape the world, basically becoming a god (king Allant and Demon Slayer in the dark ending). In DS3 Dark Sign pours the will (the fire of the light) of the gods in that tree, while at the same time obstructing the men's will (the fire of the dark) from influncing the world, while burning on dark flames to continue influncing the world (you can interpret as people still believing in gods, worshiping them). I always interpreted that dark sign in the sky as gods cursing the world just as they did with men. The world dies and resurrects again and again, while souls becomes less abundant, as if the world itself hollows and in the end of this hollowing is ash, just like hollows becoming ashen ones, the world itself turned into ash by gods' endless will. On this note it is a good to point out word "hollow". Erdtree is hollow and hollows are, well, hollow, don't have will of their own. It is good to hear that Margit, the person who is probably the closest to understanding the Erdtree says "Emboldened by the *flame* of ambition", sincce we want to basically put out will/flame into the Erdtree. It is also good to point out that every type of flame in the game has a goal of burning something: the giant's flame wants to burn the Erdtree, the blackflame wants to burn the gods, the Flame of Frenzy wants "incinerate all that divides and distinguishes' and, even tho it is not said in the game, i do believe Mohg's flame also has a purpose and my interpretation is that he wants to burn away his blood connections and build the world on authority, where those, who server him are held in the highest regard.

Yes, that’s the narrative explanation! The sign pouring into the kiln is representative of the Pygmy age beginning and the age of flame ending. As it should have been before Gwyneth tried to prevent it with the brand. That’s what’s specific to dark souls, but he uses this symbol again in Elden Ring at castle sol to refer to an eclipse. All these things have specific narrative reasons for existing but in the video I’m just looking at the themes / mechanics of his symbols! They occur when an age ends and a new age arrives

The main thing that makes me doubt the damaged tree in Deeproot Depths is some sort of pre-Erdtree separate Greattree is that it’s extremely small and the roots all over Deeproot Depths don’t really appear to be its roots. They’re much bigger than it and don’t seem to be growing out of it, or even have once grown out of it in the past. You’re definitely onto something with the red “primordial gold” stuff though. The Helphen stuff is really wild, it’s so rarely referred to and feels like it should be a bigger deal than it is If the Erdtree was dying and going to be replaced when an Emypyrean succeded Marika, how come this isn’t addressed in any of the Mending Rune endings? You talk about Goldmask’s realization being not just that Marika was clinging to power but also that the Erdtree had to go, but in his ending it’s still standing and seems to have had its pre-Shattering luster restored. Oh, also! Minor point but with Izalith, it’s pretty clearly stated that her goal was to recreate the First Flame (presumably after it started going out) in both her Lord Soul and the Chaos Storm pyromancy descriptions.

Are you talking about the tree we find Siluria at? Becauae I thought she was reffering to the giant, seemingly cut off, stump that we can see on the underground map in the nameless eternal city. That stump seems to be have belonged to a tree even bigger than the erdtree, and it's next to the erdtree, not directly under it, which would put the erdtree geographically in the same position as all of the competing braches of the crucible that grow out to the side of the central column, as we see demonstrated by Siluria's spear's model of the crucible. With the Erdtree just being the one of those branches that outcompeted the others and became the trunk of the new incarnation of the Erdtree. Which might support the theory that the modern incarnation of the erdtree grew out from the stump of a previous iteration. This makes

Also, about Izalith, the idea that she was trying to recreate the first flame has long been disproven as a mistranslation on the localization team's part. The japanese script makes it clear that Izalith was tring to make her own version of the first flame for herself, out of ambition, not out of deperation, let alone desire, to save the first flame. The civilization of Izalith itself has a lot of evidence to suggest that it wasn't destroyed by the eruption of the chaos flame and the resulting demons that were born. Rather it seems that Izalith made the chaos flame and at first didn't have control over it, which was the chaotic period where she birthed ceasless discharge, who has no control over his own flame and is instead burned by it, but then she gained control over it with the help of her daughters, and she used that flame to birth the first demons who had control over their flame, the demon firesages, who even learned flame sorcery, as the first step in her attempt to create a hybrid civilization between witches, demons, and humans that actually functioned at first, but then got wiped out by Gwyn and his army of Black Knights because he naturally saw the creation of another flame as a threat to his own supremacy.

That's why it has the same ethereal golden appearance as spirit Godfrey or the sights of grace. It's entirely a concept of faith now, and if you don't have grace, it's a giant burned stump! There's a lot of evidence in-game that most people can't actually see the Erdtree. Your vision is altered by the influence of outer gods!

Hey Quelaag, I’ve developed a first draft for a crazy theory in the game and I’d love to hear your thoughts. It all began from the point you made at 38:54 😜 and It goes as follows: I have this theory that ties Ranni to Miquella and it’s brought much of the story together. It starts with the The Beast Eye. “Claw-marked stone eye received from Gurranq, Beast Clergyman. It is said to tremble when near Deathroot. The murky violet iris writhes as if alive.
"I am not sated... Feed me more...Death..." I personally believe that the Item description is the key to tying it to the Dusk/Gloam eyed queen aka Marika the eternal. The short version is that judging from Iji and Ranni’s dialogue, we know that when each Empyrean are chosen by their two fingers, they are given a shadow that will betray them if they should ever go against the Greater Will. When Marika began to plot against the Greater Will, I believe Maliketh used Marika’s own Great Rune, Destined Death, against her and took the eye after impaling her with the crimson spear you see in the final arena. It would explain why her corpse is missing her left eye, why the eye has a claw mark, and is surrounded by Marika’s stony flesh. This eye could very well have been passed down to some of her children as well. Melina- she reveals to have the same eye, on the same side of her face, in the lord of frenzy ending. Malenia - obviously this is pure speculation but I think the rot that covers her eyes was an intentional creative decision to hide this very secret. Miquella - maybe we’ll find out in the DLC Ranni - It’s hard to tie Ranni with being a daughter to Marika but she does possess the same Gloam colored eye in the exact same pupil. I believe Ranni’s pupil color that she never opens is Golden and that’s basing it from Melina. In fact, the golden color from Melinas right eye only changes to white in the flame of frenzy ending, after the golden order is no more and grace is gone. Shortly after I had another big theory that began with Torrent, that’s right. Particularly about who the former master might be. “A delicate goldwork ring. Can be used as a finger whistle.” I scratched my head on that question for a bit and it lead me to two candidates. First one is Miquella. Second is Ranni. I’ll make some points that back up both of these contenders: Miquella: The spectral steed whistle is made of a delicate “goldwork”. I didn’t think much of it at first but after seeing the flame of frenzy ending, I’ve speculated that the material is Unalloyed Gold. This is backed by the fact that the whistle is still intact after the flame of frenzy is unleashed. We know that Miquella’s needle is made from the same material and has the properties to ward away the effects of the flame of frenzy and rot, which both originate from outer gods. Ranni: This one is less likely but upon inspecting Ranni’s discarded Empyrean flesh, you can see that she had red hair and is missing a 🦶 much like how Radahn is missing both feet. In fact, all of the red haired demigods are crippled in the same way and use some kind of crutch to help them get around(Malenia with her prosthetic feet and Radahn with his gravitational powers). It might have something to do with the Curse of the Fire Giant….hmmm….but I digress, I speculated what Leonard is to Radahn, Torrent was to Ranni before she became a doll. Shortly after, I started to formulate my craziest theory in the game and the more I played with it, the more everything began to tie in a bow. Ranni WAS Miquella. I’ll try to explain with my biggest points: 1.I believe that the Amber Egg Radagon gave to Rennala contains the Great Rune of Miquella. I also believe that Rennala is trying to rebirth Miquella using the rune. Juvenile Scholar Cap Reads: Yet their rebirth is not without imperfections, and thus do they repeat the process, eventually becoming utterly dependent upon it. I speculate that the “imperfections” are happening because of Miquella’s curse(eternal childhood) and until it’s perfected, Ranni(Miquella) will continue to inhabit the doll. Backing up my previous theory, this would also explain why they all have gold/dusk eyes. 2.Another supporting evidence is by looking at the rune of the unborn, then looking at Malenia’s. In order for it to make sense I have to mention another of my biggest theories and that is Marika and Radagon were born twins, had their children before becoming one, and most of their children are born twins as well. This is backed up by the fact that every Great Rune in the game bears a striking resemblance to their twin counterpart. Malenia & Miquella(confirmed twins) Margitt & Mohg(confirmed twins) Rykard & Radahn The only one I can’t tie this to is Godrick but it is said he has distant relations and not a direct offspring. That country bumpkin. 3.Another key is Ranni’s discarded empyrean flesh. Obviously, it’s charred so it’s impossible to tell but I’d wager it looks like Malenia’s. The corpse has Malenia’s red hair and her stature(Morgott cutscene shows identical size thrones while Ranni’s is smaller). Speaking of Malenia, this would be a good explanation as to why she went to Caelid to challenge Radahn and be desperate enough to nuke the place with her scarlet rot. She was serving Miquella(Ranni). 4.There are item descriptions that reveal that Miquella used to be a golden order fundamentalist, but I believe he/she switched sides after her and all of her sibling demigods were born with curses and were expected to follow the Greater Will, but I think the breaking point was when Marika(the mother) fell and was betrayed by Maliketh(This would also explain how she and Iji know about the true nature of Blaidd) after possibly wanting to free her children. Miquella might’ve been chosen as the next heir(which would explain why Mohg wanted to be his/her consort) but instead decided to create her own fate following Rennala’s teachings about the moon but in order for her to set herself and her siblings free, she would have to slay their two fingers(Finger Reader Crone, Liurnia) which I believe she did but before she could get to her own they retreated to the stars and are being protected by Radahn. 5.After becoming her consort, Ranni says that her age will not be of “gold” but the “stars”. Miquella is heavily tied to gold and the properties it possesess to ward away the influence of the outer gods especially once it’s unalloyed. This is backed up by using miquellas needle to rid ourselves of the flame of frenzy, Malenia prosthetics, and Torrents whistle. In fact, all of Ranni’s entourage can be seen wearing unalloyed gold(Mask of Confidence in particular eludes to this very secret) 6.Everyone speculates Miquella has ties to and St. Trina’s who’s gender is open to interpretation(Miquella’s needle depicts the symbol for mercury, who represents intersex people(Thank you Quelaag, RU-vid)). In fact, the item description in the Sword of St. Trina states that he could’ve been a boy or girl. St. Trina is heavily tied to sleep and there is an instance in the game where Ranni enters a deep slumber at the same time as Rogier after he asks you to retrieve her curse mark and she murders the dude in his sleep for prying too much *shivers*. I believe she takes the form of St. Trina when she is dream phasing. Also, the juveniles in Rennala’s fight sing about sleep. 7.The Miquellean straight sword is modeled after the carian sword but it has amber(just like the egg) instead of Glinstone and the real Loretta can be found at the haligtree tying Caria to Miquella as well. In fact, I personally believe the Albinauric’s(all generations) are Miquellas(Ranni’s) subjects. This would explain why half of the haligtree Medalion is in the Albinauric village right under Ranni’s moon realm. Coincidence? 8.In Castle Sol, there is a ghost that talks about Miquella’s Eclipse, which is pretty symbolic to Ranni’s destiny(moon taking over the sun) 9.In her ending, before she brings about the age of the stars, the way she holds Marika’s(her true mother)head makes it seem like she’s making a vow to her to not be influenced by the outer gods anymore, but to prosper with true freedom and she chooses you to be her consort(Suck it Mohg) That’s my interpretation anyways. 10.Finally, Ranni do sound like a child and that she tiny I may have missed something but those are my strongest points. The only things that could disprove this is Miquella’s cocoon in Mohg’s palace but I believe that it’s nothing but a husk. In fact the game eludes to this. And Ranni has dialogue where she talks about being chosen as Empyreans and she says I, Miquella, and Malenia. Could be she’s being tricky with her words in order to protect her TRUE identity(which she’s done before) but who can say.

So my tinfoil hat theory: I think Renna (the body ranni inhabits) was an original denizen of one of the eternal cities (the teleporter in her Rise leads to the underground). I wonder if she was the gloam eyed queen initially, and was the second of the "twin birds" that fell to the lands between. She was defeated by Maliketh using the rune of death, meaning that her body was destroyed, but her soul could have been hewn into the erdtree (now known as Melina???). The twin birds are blue and red respectively, and are symbolically similar to ice and fire and the creation of the world. The twin birds are also in charge of life and death respectively??? But at the same time I dont talk too much about it because there is soooo much unknown

@@quelaag Very compelling stuff. Plausible too. I used to be a believer of Melina being the GEQ but there’s nothing in the game that supports she had an altercation with Maliketh. Marika though? Maybe. I always asked myself how do Iji and Ranni know about the true nature of Blaidd? They must’ve seen it happen and the only other recorded Empyrean with a shadow is Marika. If her shattering the Elden Ring activated Malikeths kill switch then it would make sense. Another question I always asked myself is just how Maliketh is able to posses or lock away the Rune of Death? He’s only a shadow bound, not a demigod. The best answer I could come up with is that he sealed Marika inside him, who was a vessel. His black blade looks like it’s made from Marika’s torn half of her body, leading up to her eye that I speculated is the origin of the stone covered Beast Eye/Gloam Eye(the fact that it writhes could also mean it’s the only part of her that’s still “alive”. Ew.). I always wondered if her Great Rune became DD, after the shattering. Would make sense but the Elden rune depicted in her soreseal has an upward arc where as the rune of death has a downward, mirroring her crucifixion. This would lay some credence to your theory, possibly being her twin or something from one of the eternal cities. Yeah..too much unknown. Fun to theorize tho 😊

Just spit balling but I have a theory. The crucible and great tree were creations of a different outer god. This outer god that originally created life could have been the twinbird, gloam eyed queen or the formless mother. Then the greater will swooped in and took over the crucible and life cycle like a parasite. Throughout the game you see an old world of monsters being erased by the age of gold. So basically the greater will is not the original god of the lands between but a usurper of the system.

I agree that there is a primordial great tree. However, imo, the erdtree is that tree, changed by the parasitism of the Greater Will, unless that Japanese Kanji thing is 100% true. I'd have to see it myself tho, do you have the link for that post? Your content is great btw. Love what you're doing here and would be down to help out however I can. I have quite a few theories that puzzle piece befit the story in ways that I haven't seen talked about anywhere else that you might be interested in.

Based on the sheer control the Elden Ring has over nature, the fact it comes from the Greater Will, which was formerly a part of the One Great, and overall seems more like a capital "G" God, rather than a lower case "g" god, and that the Elden Beast's tail appears to be root like, I think the Elden Ring and Greater Will are the source of all life, including both incarnations of the Erdtree. Hyetta's dialogue regarding the One Great, the Greater Will, and the Frenzied Flame, seems to be describing life and souls as being a product of the Greater Will after separating itself from the the One Great and striking out with its own agenda.

Praise the ERDitor, Dragon Tales butt scales. To go along with important characters having similar names (just to confuse u?) we should call the OG "The Urtree" I wonder if someone will try to finish growing Miq's Haligtree. I could see Children of Rot or CleanRot Knights shoving Mil's flower in the hole. Maybe Mohg replants the corrupted cocoon. It wouldn't end well, however it goes. Miq never reached full Trina stage, so the tree is his incomplete/imperfect feminine form. And because Miyazaki, people will talk about how amazing Trina is, and then she'll mop the floor with you. *Glances at Patches wielding 6 Moonlight GSwords, hovering over me with his mechajetpack* -Ya that multiverse theory can stay shut.

So...if past is red... and new is gold...Is that also a connection to Marika/Radagon for Marika has blond golden hair and Radagon red one? Is this some form of split personality thingy where Radagon wanted to restore the old order somewhat past but his Marika persona took over and the events we know happened? The whole Radagon and Marika thing just crashes my brain.

"We stand on the shoulders of giants.", a quote Elden Ring uses in both ways & quite literally. Emphasized with the Vulgar Milita. The true creator god infinitely dividing & remixing to create everything, same as in the Elder Scrolls series, Merica could be understood as willing to risk truly ending existence for everyone by helping the Greater Will divide even faster. She did just want to learn, after all. Merica was Numen, like the Numenorians of Tolkien Middle Earth & the Numen that founded Rome. Lots of intertextuality. 'Merican stands on the shoulders of giants, figuratively, where they brough a literal hammer down on reality in a blind pursuit of self-enrichment perhaps? Certainly sounds like the USA. Regardless; the claim is that Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, Déraciné, & Sekiro all share the same fantasy Earth. They share Characters, settings, & even build on each others' themes directly in a pleasant manner using intertextuality. It's HUGH, with a ton of supporting evidence I think you'd actually enjoy. That mentioned, no one who believes that stuff thinks Elden Ring is part of it & they 100% agree with you here. You & your crew did great, as always. Please give them, & yourself, compliments.

@@quelaag Intertextuality isn't all-or-nothing, otherwise Elden Rings' use of folklore, literary, historical, & legacy developer media causes your video to contradict itself. Just because Elden Ring reuses Patches, storylines, themes, & much more from previous games doesn't mean Elden Ring is connected to them in any way. No, storytelling isn't all-or-nothing & to argue otherwise immediately... Stanger, you have no reason to believe or value anything I write & I have no intention or desire to be rude. Intertextuality is an aspect of Media Literacy, an entire field of intense academic study, & it's clear you don't know it. I can't make a video like you, nor is it polite to write the essay required to explain myself to someone I don't know [you] without permission first, so I find myself caught in a catch 22. There is much I can do, however, if you will work together with me. You do have a big, smart brain after all. Let's build a foundation of understanding. Please view video "Intertextuality" by channel Melany Ventura. Take note of Allusion, Reference, Quotation, Calque, Translation, Parody, Pastiche, Appropriation, & Adaptation. You might notice how my previous comment uses these to layer meaning. Now, to apply this in another context so you'll have a dynamic understanding, please watch (content warning; racism) "Bored Ape Nazi Club" by channel Philion. Notes how those vile NFTs use Intertextuality but also how the video itself is forced to do death-by-a-thousand cuts just to prove its' point. In order to prove any point regarding the interconnected nature of DS1, Bloodborne, Déraciné, & Sekiro I would be forced to endlessly list the supporting evidence & explain college level Literary Theory until, as some point, you understand. It would be extremely rude for me to write that essay to you, Stranger, but I will give extremely short examples & explanations if requested. Like how Darks Souls 1 has the (prototype) main characters of Bloodborne, Déraciné, & Sekiro in it. How bow DS1 & BB are set in the same place (Lordran). How Déraciné is a sequel to Bloodborne & even has the main character, Plain Doll, & Gehrman in it. How Sekiro & Bloodborne are set at the same time but different parts of the same world, which is core to both games. This all keeps going but I'm being vague to be polite. It's death-by-a-thousand-cuts; how should I proceed, Stranger?
