Asuras were the founder of assyrian civilisation in Syria region. Asur Banipal is mentioned as Syrian king in history. While the Rakshasas were the followers of Raksha culture founded by Ravan to counter the Yaksha culture of his step brother Kuber to grab Lanka.

The point when you said Rakshasas protect forest you were talking about yaksha. The origin of Rakshasas is from kaikasi (Asur Girl) and Visharva (Bramhan) who were the parents of Ravana. Also when Ravana was the only king of Rakshasas he challenged the Greatest king of Asura Kartaveer Arjun, who was further assasined by lord parshuram. Basically, different cultures. Asuras were the Ashurs or warriors of Assyria. Rakshasas were the warriors from Lanka, Indonesia and Australia.

Your 1st line is wrong.every word in sanskrit if defining a particular thing. So certainly there are difference. Diti and aditi are mother of deva and asura...hence sura ,nara, deva, asura, rakhasha ,danab, pisacha etc are specific tribes or clans existing ancient world. Indeed there are Banara clan which is NOT monkey. VANARA is NARA alike .Indeed Hanumanborn out of human mother and Vanara king hence there must be very close similarities and cross breeding existing between nara &vanara. For People not familiar or acquainted with Hindu (Sanathan Dharm). Gods in Hinduism mainly are the 3 main - Brahma(Creator), Vishnu(Caretaker), Shiva(Destroyer) - of the know world/universe. Their wives are also equally important. Their existence is at a completely different realm and they do not live in Heaven- they are in higher realm. Then there's the ultimate Goddess Shakti (literally meaning Energy) - there are forms of the ultimate Goddess (always referred to as Mother Goddess) - even Dark Energy is a form of Mother Goddess (interestingly, this was known thousands of years ago and now scientist are trying to understand Dark matter and Dark Entergy). Anways, Asur(a), Rakshas(a) and Dev(a) are basically 3 different species (of the many more species). Asura are powerful beings who live in Underworld and Deva are beings who rule Heaven. (Remember, heaven in Hinduism is not the ultimate place of God where people would go after they die - it's just another realm on a higher plane). Asuras live in Underground, Humans live on Earth (mid realm) and DemiGods live in Heaven (upper realm). There are many more realms above and below. Asuras and Devas are both DemiGod supernatural beings- which is why the never ending conflict for control of Heaven. (Please note- Hinduism is not a monotheistic religion, and therefore there's no "1 ultimate Devil", and there's no God vs Devil like in monotheism religions). Infact, all species i.e. Asura (or Devil) as well as Rakshasa are both know to be have obtained more powers by praying to 2 of the ultimate 3 Gods (mostly Brahma and sometimes Shiva). Rakshasa on the other hand is another species primarily from Earth but mostly know for being Notorious (but also sometimes it's believed they are protectors of nature) - they are mostly known for killing humans.
