It doesn't require 16 cores, it's only recommended to have 16 cores for optimal performance. They recommend this number because they themselves aren't even completely sure of the minimal resources required to run it, so they set the requirement on the higher end so they can write off any bad performance reported on lower end CPUs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, because there are absolutely enough idiots out there that would try running this on a 10 year old CPU and wonder why it doesn't work so well. But anyone who knows what they're talking about/what they're doing, or at least has a fleeting passion to find out the truth, will experiment for themselves to figure out what works and what doesn't work; and the answer they might come up with won't always be 16 cores.
@Cygnus_MC
@Cygnus_MC Год назад
Yeah i read that. But my own testing came up that 16 cores is just... Best for a good result

Most of a minecraft server is running on a single thread, the main tick thread. There are a few exceptions like chat or the socket for joining the server, but generally all the heavy load like entity ticking is run on a single thread. You could have 64 cores and would probably experience more peformance loss, since CPUs with a very high core count tend to have less single core performance, which is the main benchmark for running minecraft servers. This might maybe change in the future with other implementations like Folia, however a real multithreaded server would put a lot of new challenges on for plugin developers, especially those who are not too familiar with thread synchronisation.

Im always happy to see clever tricks like these implemented into resource constrained games Reminds me of the time John Carmack figured out how to do 2D platformers on the PC during a time noone thought it was possible. Having Super Mario likes running in DOS in 1990 was mindblowing, and the trick was rather ingenious aswell. Instead of rendering the level outside the screen, he only rendered i think 3 pixels or blocks of it outside the screen, and it only loaded in new ones when the player moved Smart optimizations have kinda been lost on the current age because of how much performance everything offers, so it takes a poorly optimized game to force people to think creatively

@@Cygnus_MC Honestly, a lot of it i learned from Civvie, or the book he used to recommend in his earlier videos; Masters of Doom Now, i feel the need to say that, i am not a big book reader. School killed my motivation to read in second grade and that was a LONG time ago, but masters of doom is one of the best books i've ever read, and it singlehandedly got me interested in reading again, and by that i mean honest to god book reading, not blogposts or something like that. For those interested in what gaming was like in the 90's on the PC, Masters of Doom i can highly recommend! Although its a bit old and the revisioned version came out around 2001 or so, right before Doom 3 launched, in its epilogue it even says a few things about it that equate to cautious optimism, heh, its still very up to date. It has a few inaccuracies though, wish they'd make a 20th anniversary release or something where they fix this, but for example, the book says Tom Hall left ID because he didnt like the aggressive nature of the newer games, like wolfenstein and he wanted to make kid friendly games. Thats incorrect. He left because he was forced out by the two John's. Also check out Pixelmusement. Making DOS game content since 2009 or something DavidXNewton is kinda in the same group aswell although he's mostly doom and sometimes others like Transport Tycoon

what made you say that "mojang has given up on good performance" at the end? last update had a lighting engine re-write that improved performance a lot. sure, it's not perfect, it could be more optimised im sure, but a lot of mods that optimise the game even further tend to take shortcuts that, while working for most, also break the game on other setups unless its some weird twitter drama thing where people just hate mojang for not doing everything that caters specifically to them and their community or playstyle, which is like, what 90% of complaints i hear are anyway

Your video is *massively* misrepesenting the situation here. Bukkit did not disintegrate. Neither did spigot lose popularity. Spigot is simply a modefied craftbukit. And so is paper simply a modified spigot. Saying they where replaced or died is like saying create mod killed Minecraft because so many people now play it. It simply makes no sense. They are not competitors. If you use paper you use spigot and if you use spigot you use craft bucket. Sponge is a different implementation and died exactly because of it. Craft bucked is the base of modern Plugin based servers. Saying it died when it is literally the base of like 90% of Minecraft multiplayer is really stupid. Anything else dies because it wasn't Bukkit. Simple as that.
@Cygnus_MC
@Cygnus_MC Год назад
Euhm. I do mention in other video's that spiggot is still alive and well, however in the community itself a lot and i mean A LOT of people dont like what they are doing, with paper even planning to hardfork from spiggot to dont have them in the upstream anymore. When i mention terms such as dies or replaced its merely talking in terms of popularity. Maybe i should have clarified that
@brickie9816
@brickie9816 6 месяцев назад
Not to hate but any technical mc player (including me) would like to have a wird with you after watching this video. Paper compromises a lot of game mechanics for better performance and calls it "a bugfix" or worse "an optimisation". optimisations dont make compromises. And the performance increase is questionable, especially compared to fabric mods, which dont break the game. Thank you for csmimg to my ted talk
@Cygnus_MC
@Cygnus_MC 6 месяцев назад
Yes, however technical players and casual players do not and will not mix in Minecraft. So for casual survival enjoyers or minigames players this is still the golden standard.
@Cygnus_MC
@Cygnus_MC 6 месяцев назад
Also not to be mean, but "optimizations dont make compromises" is just blatantly wrong
@brickie9816
@brickie9816 6 месяцев назад
@Cygnus_MC depends how you look at it. It can't be an optimisation if it changes how the system works, because you don't optimise the old system, then replace it. But if you don't care how it works, just if it works, then I guess you are right
@Cygnus_MC
@Cygnus_MC 6 месяцев назад
@@brickie9816 the fact of the matter is, paper is not made for technical players, the bukkit api existed to allow massive amounts of people to play at once, they introduced async chunkloading before mojang did. Their optimization where done to ensure stability, and they are optimizations. I think its ridiculous to be negative about paper while its Done so much already. Especially when you can just use fabric?

Just a technical note. Generally speaking the garbage collector in the Windows version of Java tends to be the source of some of Java edition's performance issues. The overall performance of Minecraft java edition on non Windows platforms like Linux and MacOS is better.
@Ancrek
@Ancrek 3 месяца назад
that's a good explanation about that, i follow the bukkit era, then spigot, and got hiatus for a bit, and i look forward for this papermc server, well, it work so well, i just learn new permission plugin like luckperms, fawe, the region system like worldguard, or griefprevention or redprotect with new "GUI" things, and now, bedrock players can connect into java server, that's amazing for me..., i wish i can make server someday
@Timongcraft
@Timongcraft Год назад
But Bukkit/Spigot plugins can run on Paper, almost all plugins from version 1.13 and above are upwards compatible and paper is based on Bukkit. This is good for plugin developers (Which I am as well) but is just bad for performance. On the other hand, if you use, for example, Fabric, you'll experience better performance since it's vanilla Minecraft where you can inject code. It's true that if Mojang makes changes, those changes will be reflected in Fabric. However, this isn't necessarily a drawback, because mostly it isn't hard to correct and you can access everything using mixins. If you're using a plugin and want to modify something that the Bukkit API doesn't support, you'd have to resort to using NMS, which is version-dependent and can be annoying to work with.
@Cygnus_MC

I think the core problem of server softwares' performance is not how horribly optimized Minecraft is, I think it goes back to the fact they're using Java. Despite it being a JIT-compiled language, it still suffers from ridiculous memory usage and overall poor performance. While others might suggest languages like Rust and C++ for performance, I think a better option would be C#; It combines the best of two worlds, performance and ease of use, they could the AOT compilation ability of it, and use the lowlevel features of C# for hotpaths and heavy computatios while at the same time offering an easy to use plugin API. If servers start using languages like Rust the plugin community will be nonexistent, but for C#, it will be easier due to the similarities between Java and C#.
@Cygnus_MC

There are actually servers who do that!
@AliDoesntWork

@javierflores09
@javierflores09 3 месяца назад
the issue with Minecraft's performance has never been the language in use, in fact, had they not choose Java at its time, I don't think Minecraft would have ever come so far. Besides, people like to shit on Minecraft's performance but in reality their codebase has gotten much more flexible and performant over the years, sure there are some glaring problems yet to be resolved but it is nowhere near as bad as say when 1.13 was first released. People love to jump the shark when it comes to languages, often times it is more of an issue of ecosystem than it is of language features since if you are knowledgeable enough, it is all the same no matter what language you use (challenges like 1brc have demonstrated so)
@hanro50
@hanro50 15 дней назад
C# is also a JIT compiled language. The only difference is that unlike the JDK, C# ships a barebones version of it's runtime with the compiled app. Most of Java's serious performance flaws, in my experience, boils down to the Windows version of java being bad at memory management. Most servers however, do not run on Windows and thus this becomes a non factor.
