In a recent interview that the former CSKA player Aaron Jackson gave while visiting the states this summer he talked about the infamous "Spanoulis" play. As well as a Spanoulis story for when he was playing for the Houston Rockers.
For those interested the other 2 players he mentioned were Nando De Colo and Sergio Llull. You can find the full interview podcast here nateduncannba.com/podcast-episodes/aaron-jackson-honest-interview-plus-lac-lal-mem-summer-prospects/ Its very interesting as Aaron talks about the differences between Euroleague and the NBA
ESPN or other big sports networks needs to make interviews/podcast with American players in Euroleague every once in a while. It brings awareness to how good the game actually is down there. I'm had it with all these people who lessen these legends down there and insist that college basketball is somehow better than Euroleague. Also, it's interesting af to listen to different perspectives of the game.
In NBA they’ll rather spend 5 years trying to develop Markel Fultz then give the ball to Vasilis or Teodosic type of player. If they are to remove lottery system it would be much more competitive league. At the beginning of every season you have people talking about 20 teams that have a chance of winning it and at the All star break you figure it is 2-3 teams that can win the championship
Even in this days european players are underrated in USA despite the fact they have shown skills, high basketball IQ and most of the time they have played for the wins of the team, not personal stats.Different mentality. No surprise many american players choosing to play in Euro Champions League and develope themselves further.Coach Q learned a lot coaching CSKA as well.Plus being humble man knowing what it takes to reach next level.Key word is development as team.Or you can buy team like they do in NBA?
No question about it.What is "fascinating" about NBA is bandwagon media coverage. They decide who is good player and who is not according to standards of NBA and who brings most money to NBA.So yes athleticism is a good thing if you need 7-8 years to blossom in NBA.They were disrespecting Luka Doncic before draft, changed their tune after his 1st year and now they are talking about next level.Personally I watch Euroleague any given day before NBA.Skills, execution and shooting level is far better in Europe. If I want to watch 120kg athlete,I watch weightlifting or something.I know I am disrespecting NBA now same way they respect european players, but fact remains top 5 NBA players include 3 european players.Doncic,Jokic,Giannis.Enough said.
Besides the play that Aaron Jackson mentioned, Spanoulis mastered the pick&roll since he was in Panathinaikos. Nemanja Bjelica once said: "In Fenerbahce, coach Obradovic used to mention a lot Vassilis Spanoulis whenever he talked about the pick&roll".We all know they don't have a good relationship anymore, but he surely recognizes that Kill Bill is the pick&roll master. It's no secret that Spanoulis with his assists turned all the centers ,who came to Olympiacos as mediocre players, into great scorers (Kyle Hines, Bryan Dunston, Othello Hunter, Khem Birch, Nikola Milutinov).
@@netvalue4075 what do you mean? spanoulis tought them basketball? of course they came at a time when nobody knew them, but it is obvious that they had the potential to become top players in their position and they did! thats why Olympiakos couldnt keep them. Hines in CSKA for so many years, now Milutinov in CSKA, Dunston one of the most well paid centers in Euroleague and Birch an NBA player playing 20 minutes per game. thats their talent not spanoulis. did he teach sloukas also? he had great players besides him and at least one great coach (Ivkovic), of course Bartzokas is a good coach also. you present traveloulis like a magician who made Hines better, thats ridiculous. they were a great team, with a great coach, and spanoulis was good at his part playing the pick and roll, everything else is fairy tales for children
Unfortunately in USA they promote their own players and it is very tough for a Greek player to survive, few great and very successful in Europe players tried but they failed, unless there is a story which fits NBAs marketing...
USA is mainly promoting athleticism. That's why Giannis is dominating. Spanoulis is just not that kind of player and he did the best thing for his career, by returning to Greece
@@loseyourself6881 Since Spanoulis is the role model for Giannis and Luca it is self explanatory that you are clueless about “Kill Bill” and the hard working mentality he brought into the game. Athleticism is a word with a meaning totally different from what you probably think and/or imagine.
@@captainjim1010 τι not. even close.
@@thanasis834 No he is not a great shooter. His 3point percentage is really low. Compare it with other Euroleague legends. He had to shoot a lot though, through his career, and difficult shots. On the other hand, even though 32% is a BAD percentage it doesn't make him a bad shooter. But you can't, by any means, call him a good one.
@thanasis834 I'm more than sure about you though "thanasis". You surely are dumb as fuck. You say something stupid just because you are a Spanoulis fan and then, when time comes to properly argue your point you prove that you re even dumber than everyone thought. Congrats 👏!!! Not only you' re his number one groupie, but you' ve also accomplished to ruin what could have been a nice conversation.
@@kilianmoura7441 mediocre shooters can't catch fire like he does. It's just in all of his career teams have been double and triple teaming him so he can't get the easy shots that 40% 3pt shooters get. Don't ever think that you can know all the story just by numbers. If spanoulis gets a wide open three, it is money in the bank all day.
happy to see spanoulis papalouks diamadidis pridezis and now giannis antetokounmpo...playing and make GREEK BASKETBALL FAMOUS!!!!....im kinda disapointing iam young so i didnt witness nikos gkalis and panayotis giannakis..
@@levesd3722 That is not true tbh. Galis was phenomenal for Europe noone denies that. But saying you didnt miss a thing form old players...Giannakis, Fasoulas, Diamantidis , Sigalas, Papaloukas and so many others ...
They hype up these European players like no other . Giannas Luka dirk made it because they were actually good. If he was that good he would have made it
Spanoulis he could have a tremendous nba career. He was as good if not better than parker (french). He just needed an nba coach to see what he could do. Unfortunately vg was not that guy as in general he is a beyond average coach. If he played for pop or spolstra then it would had been a different story
you must realize that spanoulis is known in europe but in the nba he was nothing. thas why jeff van gundy talked to him like that. they dont care about euroleague when NBA is for years the most difficult and spectacular championship in the world
bro the ball played by olympiakos - pao in esake finals from 2000-2013 is some of the best basketball of all time. Dnt b fooled by the hype ... OSFP and PAO in this time-period could have taken any great nba teams (if the game was being played at home with euro rules)... but nba court size and rule set different game idd
in the nba he was nothing because the coach didn't give him a chance to acclimatize and unfold his skills. Politics. Nba is more spectacular because they don't play defense to allow scoring that sells the game... Marketing. :P@@gdounito
Mr Jackson get ur facts correct...that play u call" spanoulis play" was originally mind invented from DIMITRIS ITOUDIS, at the time second coach off Legentary team Panathinaikos Athens, and head coach Zeliko obradovich. They together evolved the play into the famous piknroll that was played from Mike Batiste with Dimitris Diamantidis with huge succes..
He has 3 championships (2009,2012 and 2013), he has made 5 finals. (2009,2012,2013,2015,2017) probably what confused Jackson who said "5 championships"
