#TradWives observes a new women's movement emerging in the USA focused on reverting to the values of traditional housewives of the 50s and early 60s, through the story of a Chicago divorcée.
Jennifer is a super-fan of 'Fascinating Womanhood' by Helen Andelin, an international best-seller in 1963 which is the bible of the movement. She travels to Springfield, Missouri to assist the author's daughter, Dixie, who is about to publish a follow-up book for the current generation of women.

Lola, that was what bothered me so much as well. I am fine with these women living this way, b/c they have a right to define womanhood for themselves. When I was married, I was a fairly "traditional" wife and enjoyed it, so I get where they're coming from. But to judge other women by saying things like she's a lesbian b/c she's...what, wearing pants and has a short haircut? Why is it necessary to publicly (since this is on a blog/ forum) denigrate other women that way?

There's nothing wrong with being a traditional, feminine woman but there's also a fine line between losing yourself to an unattainable image of what a woman should be. She doesn't seem like she lives a well rounded life and seems stuck in the mindset that there can only be one type of woman that men will love and appreciate. You can be womanly and still be strong with your own interests and you can watch sports next to your husband without magically growing a beard as well.

This is my question to all those who comment negatively on this doc- why do we in America celebrate someone for “coming out of the closet” as becoming fully themselves, yet we can’t celebrate someone else for fully doing what they want to do if it aligns with a more traditional value system? These women feel fulfilled doing these things. So let them. Why not. Let people be who and what they want. We all make up a vast spectrum of society and we all need each other to exist to our fullest.

The mansplaining, her tearing herself down calling it pride, the cringe of her relationship with her daughter. Some of these concepts...they’re outdated for a reason. She purposely puts herself in a submissive position and wonders why she doesn’t feel respect from her family. I am always about people living however works for them but I hope this lifestyle doesn’t come from her blaming the divorce on herself not being good enough. Ironically, the men don't come across as exceptionally masculine despite the aim of the exercise. I would have imagined them involving themselves with activities other than stickers and decorations. The women just come across as pathetic unhappy individuals seeking relevance in middle age - almost like a mid life crisis. It only reinforces a belief I have long held, demeaning yourself for the exhaultation of another leads to profound unhappiness. I sincerely hope these women find love and acceptance internally so that they realize their own worth and understand that it is not an external reward.

As a man I felt so sad watching this. I hope the lady gets the help she needs. Also the idea that "traditional women" have prevented the war like impulses of men seems woefully ignorant. Both world wars happened whilst traditional gender roles were in place for example. Democratisation ,which includes sufferage for groups such as women, is what has helped prevent wars. Just think of the human potential that would be wasted if women reverted back to their "traditional" roles. That would truelly be a tragedy.

"As a man", you should take note that she is an author(!), a great manager, a mother and someone who is emersed in her community. She is more or less free to do with her time as she pleases (the mechanization of housework is all but complete, so long hours of labouring over the washing board are history). You should probably consider what the vast majority of women actually do for a living thanks to feminism: boring, soul-destroying tripe. Do you consider standing in a factory doing a repetitive task, or filling forms in a depressing office, to be "fulfilling your potential? If you can manage your time and have the drive, you will find that the only thing ruining your potential is working a crushing job to pay your bills. Simone De Beauvoir lamented about women's inability to transcend their social roles as "men have the potential to do"... but ask the vast majority of men about their potential for transcendence, and they'll tell you they got bills to pay. 2.2 million single mother in the UK that have to work 40+ hour shifts...and guess who does the housework? Go figure.

I haven't heard of this movement/organization before this vid. In my experience as a housewife, we are pretty much left to our own devices and have most of the "control" in the house. We manage the purchasing, cooking, laundry, cleaning, schooling/homework, entertaining, and many of us also run the household finances. Trying to micromanage a housewife would be a full time job! 😉
@survivingyoutoday8519
@survivingyoutoday8519 5 лет назад
@@flipphone582 - May I ask, how long have you been married? And does "controlling" the home cause any resentment in your husband? I used to be a follower of Fascinating Womanhood, but I feel it is too "cookie cutter" and every household is different. Men are not all the same or think the same or respond the same. The Fascinating Womanhood philosophy could only work if all men had the same personalities. Some men are great at organizing the home... some aren't so great at it and need the assistance of their wives. Fascinating womanhood teaches that it is a bad thing for a woman to run the household and that doing so causes resentment in husbands. So I just wonder how modern marriages work today? I learned a lot from Fascinating Womanhood on how to be more feminine and understand men, but it would be cool to combine FW with a modern approach. How is your modern marriage? And is your husband overcome with resentment?

An equal partnership does NOT mean anyone loses femininity or masculinity. When BOTH partners practice appreciating each other for their contributions to their marriage, and split the labour’s of their partnership according to their capabilities, regardless of whose doing what, you can have a beautifully functioning foundation for a happy marriage.

I love how she complains about being micromanaged and "man-splained" (not her words, but one of the men is literally trying to measure a picture on the computer with a ruler, while she TRIES to tell him the ruler is on the computer and she doesn't need his help). Lady, this is what you asked for. By being a traditional wife, you signed up for the micro managing, the men not thinking your solution (in this case stickers for the book) is any good, and your ideas and skills not being appreciated or trusted. This is what you asked for, this is what you wanted. And now you complain about it? Wow..

As a tradwife myself, this video is shameful. This is not how a tradwife would behave... especially that scene with her daughter. To me this is a woman who enjoys playing the life of the victim. I certainly hope that those who are interested in tradwives do not see this video first off.
@melissarawlinson8574
@melissarawlinson8574 2 года назад
I agree, and no offense to Jenny, but something was definitely off in this video. As a follower of FW, I say Vive la difference to the traditional roles of men and women! I get nothing but respect from my husband and sons in my traditional role as wife and mother and I'm definitely not a doormat (and I actually work FT now that my kids have left the nest and worked pt during their high school years) You can certainly be attentive, empathetic and feminine without being a doormat! For example, you don't have to ask your man what they'd like each day for dinner, that would actually get on my hubby's nerves. Lol Rather, you can just be attentive and know what everyone's favorites are and try to work those in just because you know they enjoy that. It seems like the video was contrived or a bit extreme for sensationalism, because it never got to the essence of the original book. The book really was more about doing your work and serving your family as unto the Lord. IMO

Whoever filmed this tried really hard to focus on arbitrary uneventful parts of everyday life that aren’t so glamorous, and capitalize on Jenny’s intimate insecure moments in order to smear the entirety of this movement. This documentary didn’t cover what these women believe hardly at all, rather tried to focus on some non existent power struggle. It’s not the lifestyle of fascinating womanhood that is sad, it’s the apparent bias of this documentary maker trying to make something out of nothing and focusing on things that have nothing to do with fascinating womanhood’s fanbase as much as one individual woman’s life.

@ascent8487

So exactly what is it that has been misrepresented? Most of us see women desperately trying to be something they aren’t in order to keep a man from walking out on her, leaving her alone in a world she’s apparently afraid to navigate on her own. It seems a false love affair. I’d rather have no love affair than 40 years of a lie. If that’s not what they teach, what do they teach? I knew a woman who behaved very much in this fashion. She took and the verbal abuse of her husband because it was the Christian thing to do. She built him up, made him feel a man, whatever that means. To the day she died of Lou Gehrig’s disease, she never let him know she had been in therapy just to deal with the pain he caused her. Letting him know wouldn’t have been the right thing for a wife to do. She wasn’t even dead a year before he started his new relationship with his now wife. Her life long love affair left empty handed in my opinion. She suffered in silence to please him, than died and he moved on like it was no big thing. You’ll likely say that isn’t the goal of such a movement. That women shouldn’t be abused. Well I think any human being living an inauthentic life is living for nothing. That’s a shallow pointless existence. Shoving yourself out of the way of your own life is pathetic. I realize love means putting the needs of your loved one first. I accept that. But living a lie should not be a requirement of love. This is repulsive. So what is the misrepresentation? I’m legitimately interested.
