What is this Shotgun?

I bid on this 12 gauge shotgun solely due to it's 36" barrel. But the barrel isn't just long, it's oddly thick, much thicker than the barrel on any shotgun I've ever seen. Just why is it so? The rest of the shotgun has just one marking on it besides the serial number, "THE STERLING". An online search will show other single shot shotguns with this marking on it, but none match this one exactly.

I just bought another one of these locally for $50. There are some very minor differences but the design is mostly the same. It has a 30" barrel and is marked "Cannon Breech" on both the barrel and receiver. I researched that name and it's likely that both were made for the Simmons Hardware Company of St. Louis, MO, likely around 1908-1915 by Hopkins & Allen.

The Sterling was a Hardware Store Brand, made by Crescent Arms, AKA American Gun Company, between 1890 and 1920. The length of the barrel makes is a ' Long Tom ', which is a long barreled shotgun used for high range Goose and Duck Hunting, as well as Turkey Hunting. You might want to consider having it re chambered for 3 1/2 ", to get the full value of the long barrel.

I had a "The Sterling" 12 gauge, and from my research I assumed it was from H. J. STERLING made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company from Connecticut. I liked the length of the barrel, but found it way too heavy. I sold it and bought a cheap Stevens Field with a 30" barrel

I have one as well. Mine is definitely a different model. It has a shorter barrel and thinner barrel walls. The stock has a release on the side and not the bottom of the forward wooden grip. My hammer also has a much stronger strike. I found a patent year on it for Aug. 11 1896. Other than that is has a serial number which is partly covered by the trigger guard and "The Sterling" engraved on the side.

Apparently “The Sterling” was a single shot shotgun made by the W.H. Davenport Firearms company. Would’ve been from the early 1900s and sold to retail stores and the like. They were made as inexpensive utility/field guns. This is just what I found from some reading and my own experience working at RIA.

I should have mentioned it in the video but that's what the auction house (not RIA) that I won this from described it as. But it doesn't match the most common pattern of WH Davenport shotguns that I see online. Either way, it's an interesting piece and I still wonder why the barrel is like it is.

Yep, I can see why you're not too concerned about shooting it. I bet it doesn't kick too hard, either. It's hard to get all that mass moving.

Sort of looks like a Hopkins & Allen eight gauge shotgun. They were nitro proofed from what I read. One of the last American made 'shooter' waterfowl guns of that caliber. Quite rare birds today. I'd love to have one. So it is a contract - Davenport ?
