Just a side note: you might want to mention hay & pellets, which IMO are the most expensive part because they're regular (biweekly or monthly) expenses. Also, for anyone watching this considering the cost because you're considering purchasing a rabbit, consider the long haul: cleaning the cage at least 1x per week (cage cleaning is not for everyone!), finding a vet that specializes in rabbits (most vets take cats & dogs, but rabbits are more of a specialty), and consider that rabbits are more unique pets than the traditional cat or dog. They're funny, humorously naughty, sweet, yet shy and difficult to get close to--it takes a long time (it's worth it for me, but I can see most people getting frustrated with how standoffish & shy buns can be). Thank you for mentioning everything else. I didn't know about the Cottontail Cottage. So cute! Looking forward to buying one. Question: I'm currently working on litter training. How did you get your buns to poop inside the box? I'm amazed that you have them on carpet. My bun would soil that carpet with pellets! But, I'd love to have him on a fabric floor as his current metal cage appears awfully uncomfortable for his feet.
Since there is so much information to know before you get a rabbit, I have to do it in multiple videos. All of my new videos are going to be about that! so keep an eye out! if I don't make a video soon enough you can always PM me any questions you have!
Though I have most of these things, these are things your rabbit would really want and would keep them healthier, if from the start you don't have all these things that's fine! Trust me I have 2 bunnies, it takes a few months to get all these things
It is at my sisters house. I wouldn't have been able to film this video until March if I would have waited. Haha! I thought that most people would get a cheaper carrier right away anyways! :p
Right now for the bunnies I’m getting soon I have a pink 6 cage level and 2 x pens. The cage will be attached to an x-pen, and they will be housed in my room, but at anytime of the day they can hop out and play in my room, they also have 2 large hay racks, 2 litter boxes, grass mats chew toys, hides, fleece corner hides, pellets, hay, and more. I can’t wait! (The 2 bunnies are sisters, and both girls)
It is great that you are letting people know it cost more than just buying a bunny. You have also shown them items they need BEFORE they bring bunny home. Good job!
I already have that video filmed! I was going to attach it to this video, but thought it would be better in a separate video for people who already own rabbits.
I actually got my stuff for about 60 dollars. The grids were 17, pet carrier was 15, fleece, rugs, bowls and other minor things were a dollar but food and hay I made sure I didn't get anything cheap and bad for my bun bun. nail trimmers and brush about 8 or 9 total and now im just trying to figure out if I want 1 or 2 bunnies and the breeder is selling the breed I want for 8 dollars so decisions, decisions!
🇪🇸 Cost: Hidey house 7 to 30€ Blankey: 4 - 10€ Good quality hay and litterbox pellets: 35 - 50€ monthly Best dry food: 1.5kg 11.45€ (every 3 months) Condo c&c : 40/80€ Carrier: it depends 15 - 30€ Toys: depends on which ones you choose, maybe 15€ all together Treats: 2 - 12€ Salad: 1€/2€ Dishes: 2 - 15€ Decent hay rack: 10/30€ Plastic cord protectors: 0.65€/meter Comb and brush: 7€ Leash and harness: 5 - 10€ Nail clipper: 3 - 4€ Litterbox: 40cm x 50cm long, 30cm high, transparent plastic storage box - 8€ First check up: 35 - 50€ What not to buy: - Big bag of pellets for only one bunny. You could probably always use cat towers if you can't find the blue hidey hole. I do have a question, have you thought about putting your video's on a playlist for future viewers? I'm actually considering getting a rabbit and it would be helpful to have an easy A-Z source. I've watched many of your videos and and they are the most informative that I've seen. Thanks for posting them!
TV Head yes and a litter box, make sure you don’t use softwood shavings like pine or cedar because they can be dangerous. I use horse stall pellets (pine pellets are fine) for litter. You can use paper bedding too.
Samantha I mean, if you buy some stuff cheap it’s not hard but in the end puppies take way more work actually because they poop more then rabbits and food is like 50$ a bag where I am but I agree with yu
I recommend free roaming a rabbit because if their potty trained you won’t have to worry about them pooping everywhere and the only expenses you have to worry about is feeding and pet care plus the toys
Great video! I don't think people realize the initial expense of purchasing a rabbit, especially people who buy at the pet store where a rabbit is say $30 but then they need to purchase $200 worth of products for it. I also don't think a lot of people understand the amount of space they really need and the amount of toys/boredom busters to keep them busy!
I have 2 rabbits and spent only 15 - 30$ a cage I did what I did and gave me much more pleasure in having the rabbits and I make these materials for a better life. in summer they get a "playhouse" which already had in my house in the winter are inside the cage I did. also needed to spend money on toys and stuff but mostly my doing :)
You should make another video of the monthly fee's of owning a rabbit, as well. Monthly it cost me about 80 - 100$, for hay, new toys, food, litter etc. for my one bunny. It would be nice to see your break down of these prices =)
This is a good video but I think it's one that you could do an update on. Some things you might want to add are things that you need to buy over and over again like hay, veggies, food and litter. Cage flooring, critical care and syringe for emergencies, and maybe an estimation for vet care. I can see it being worthwhile to break down into one time vs. continuing costs.
You should also make a video covering how much it costs to own a rabbit, going over food budgets, litter, health care like vet visits and pet insurance?
HorseAreMyLife 55 for a rabbit that’s cheap. Fucking hatches are $100+ when I found a better one NOT for rabbits for $33. Rn I’m using an old dog cage but I’m saving money for my baby(I see my pets as my children don’t judge, I love them, I’m emotionally attached lol)
When you get a new rabbit it cost about £375. You need to get everything and it's expensive. Also tip: when you travel, use an egg box lid as litter box. There's a pack of 3 fleece for dogs that are massive I'll link it:
Thanks for the video. It really helped, because i'm planning to get a rabbit soon and since i haven't got it yet, this video really helped me figure out the cost so thank you. Please do the video that you said that is above this comment, the one about "How to prepare for a rabbit."
As far as Bottle vs. Bowl for water goes... a water bottle is best for a few reasons. Water bowls are easily soiled and spilled by being tipped. The biggest problem with water bowls is rabbits can get wet dewlap... if the water is not dried properly, this then predisposes to the skin condition. Water bottles also known as sipper bottles are much better because they minimize contamination. When was the last time you saw a while rabbit drink from a bowl?
Loving and knowledgeable can be two completely different things. They may "care" but that doesn't necessarily mean they understand what they're doing. However I was giving an example of MY personal experience and also taking into account people only there for community service hours. If yours is different than hooray for you, that doesn't change the fact that the internet is filled with many professional websites dedicated to specific subjects with tons of advice backed by research and facts.
Check out the hilday fleeces after the holidays cos some go for like $3. I bought a starter cage, then a medium dog crate then finally a $200 plastic hutch which I fenced the bottom of & added levels with carpet. Pricey bunny hehe!
That's my point, all the rabbit care that I've been hearing about since rabbits became a more common pet is the total opposite of what I've learned. So, you can probably guess how surprised I was, when I started coming across all these rabbit videos discussing this information that pet rabbits are getting these days. I've been hearing things like, "They need so much fresh veggies per 4 pound..." I was told just rabbit pellets and timothy hay. Fruits, and veggies are treats only.
Thank you so much!!! I already have a rabbit. His name is Persikas that means Peach. Before I got a rabbit I learned everything from your channel. Now he's 3 months old and he's a genius. I didn't litter train him but he did it himself! The second day he started to do his bussiness in one corner of his cage. Now I bought him a litter box. Can I leave litter just in his litter box or should I leave it all over the cage just in case? Thanks
Petco is a fantasic place to get hay racks from. They have many choices to choose from (And they have different colors) :). So my choice would be Petco.
Plastic water bowls are easily tipped over, however I have a rambunctious rabbit myself, who loves to throw things and he can't throw the heavy ceramic bowl I bought for him. If people have hyper rabbits, there are heavier bowls that rabbits physically can't tip over, even some that clamp to the side of cages. The dewlap problem can be fixed by raising the bowl up a few inches on the cage, which is still more effective than a bottle. Like I said: granted you clean it everyday. Saw a what?
Owning a rabbit is about the same as owning any animal. Really the only thing you need when you first bring a bunny home is a carrying cage, a cage for the rabbit to live in, a food bowl, a water bottle (water bowls are NOT safe for a rabbit!) I can get you info on it. You don't need to buy toys right away. Make toys to start with, and use a cardboard box for a hideout. Good will is a good place for blankets, towels, etc.
How is it not safe for rabbits? It's natural, that's how they drink water in the wild, bottles can break, get clogged and I often see bunnies working hard to get water out. What are the negatives of a water bowl granted you clean it everyday? I honestly don't see any, however I see huge negatives with a bottle.
You Can , As Long As There Are No Exposed Wires , Places Where They Can Get Their Head Stuck , And You Need A Litterbox , A Food Dish And a Water Bowl That You Should Clean Twice A Day .
Hi, i'm getting a rabbit soon and not sure which sex to get, should i get female or male? which one doesn't scratch or bite as much, it'd help me decide on which one..
My mom won't let me get a rabbit, but I'm looking to get one when I move out of the house XD. I realized you did not include food or hay or what it costs to care for a rabbit for 4-5 years, could oyu do a video on that?
2) And every rabbit I've seen and known, rambunctious and otherwise, have attempted to throw their bowls, as well, the difference is the weight. If you have a cheap plastic container or a small bowl then, sure, it's possible, but I've recommended big ceramic bowls to plenty of people and it always fixes the problem. If you have a ramp, that's another issue entirely, then it becomes obvious that you should move the bowl. It's also a matter of preference...
+dogs101o thanks so much I scrolled right by this comment as I was purchasing (idk how to spell) a bottle of quick-stop that was 20 dollars thanks so much
As a warning to those in the UK, none of these prices correlate to gbp, us Brits are looking at twice to 3 times the price for simple foods, bowls and accessories.
Becc Show me where. I can't find any shops that sell them high street and the only other place is Amazon who sell them like this www.amazon.co.uk/Cube-Mesh-Grid-Storage-System/dp/B001PHOB7A and that's £40 That's $56
www.jollyes.co.uk/small-pet/rabbit.html, for food, treats, toys, water bottles, bowls, cages, tunnels, playpens etc. You're just looking in the wrong places.
deborah sigler I agree that a dog kennel will probably not be large enough. rabbit cages should be large enough where your bunny can hop 3x length and width. this is the minimum space you should give your buns. I also don't think a garage is a great place to keep your bunns. how cold does it get where you live? how much activity does your garage get?
I was wondering, where do you shop for your cottontail cottages? I try amazon, but can never find any. Would they have them at Petco, or do you have a website you use? I would be SUPER excited if you responded, I watch your videos all the time, and will be checking back for an answer!
My cousins rabbit is in a medium petstore cage (medium as in medium for a petstore cage) she is a Dutch rabbit and she also has only 1 toy, this April I'm most likely going to visit her and give her some toys but no matter what I say they aren't changing her house, the has free roam for about 5 hours but I'm pretty sure that's not enough because my rabbit has a 125x110 inch room (couldn't measure the sq ft because I'm pretty sure it's not a thousand something like Siri said) and in that room she also has a 16 sq ft Hutch
Sumaiya Malick That depends on your country! I forage for 50 % of their food, recycle items from my house and ask around for used stuff. Learn to think and recycle.
I am looking to get a rabbit. I was wondering which sex and breed is best. Want something trainable and not very mean. Thank you and your videos help lots.
Here in Greece rabbits cost 20$ in all stores....and most of the people sell them for free when their rabbit has babies....or when they don"t want their bunny any more.... so it is 0$ / 20$
Mine is going to be lower bc he is coming with mostly every thing (I am still going to get him more things) for $40 and he's going to be free range in my room so about $80
My bunny doesn't have a hay rack and another cheap idea is a bike bottle holder and she eats hay off the ground and we use human clippers and she gets them done at home you can see the vein and no problems have occurred
Hi Hayley! Please could you make a video on making homemade rabbit toys? It's just that I'm always making the same toys for my rabbit & I really don't want him to get bored! I'm sorry if you have already made a video on this, if you have please can you private message me with the link? P.S. I'm getting another rabbit soon so please don't think I'm horrible just owning one. THANK YOU!
you forgot the price of hay litter food beds veggies treats lol my bunny wont let me clip her nails i tried all the methods with the towls and blanket to cover there body or cover there body and head also is an extra large dog cage fine for them to live in also is there anway to convince your parents to letting you get your bunnys spayed my older female needs to be spayed and my younger ones it sucks having diffrent cages for the older one and then the other 2 are in the same cage
My bun only likes the toys that I've gotten from the store, I've not been able to get many and I'm scared that she is going to get bored since I'm not able to get another rabbit until the quarter in school is over and that's only if I get straight A's which would be so Lily can get spayed
this helped a lot but here in australia things are so expensive ! like just a pen , cage or hut will be about 200 dollars there is a hutch at pet magic ( its a pet store ) and a hutch was 450 dollars :O and it was shitty aswell......
