Mike Love and Bruce Johnston should thank their lucky stars they were in a band with Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine, the true Beach Boys.
If you've only seen Mike Love's version of the group, go see Brian Wilson. He may not do much on stage but his group, the Wondermints, is fabulous. Saw him in Nashville a few years ago...one of the concert highlights of my life.
Mike Love for some strange reason gets lots of hate while Brian Wilson seems to get lots of love. If you look at some of the biggest Beach Boys hits you will see that Love co-wrote them. Wilson was responsible for Pet Sounds which was the downfall of the Beach Boys. Wilson was a great musical creator but he gets too much credit while the other Beach Boys are forgotten.
@Sabrina N The Wondermints became his backing band!? A former co-worker of mine was buddies with them in the late 1990s. He gave me a music sampler containing one of their songs, “Global Village Idiot”, which I enjoy much.
I miss BRIAN Carl and Dennis! As well as Alan and Matt Jardine! Al, your son has the most sweet voice I've heard in a LONG time. You should be proud! I HATE Mike! (How did he EVER get that last name?) steve
I love Bruce Johnston. Even in 2020 you can tell the he is just happy to be there. No issues with him, he is just a friendly guy that still remains thrilled he could take part in The Beach Boys.
I understand the sentiment but it's not true. Same could be said of Dennis and Carl. However, I have seen them without those 3 many times since the 90's and with Brian for their last tour together and every time, the shows were phenomenal. Just like all the shows I've seen with maca minus the other fabs. Besides is Brian ever not there ? Its his music they are performing. PS, great interview by our great American, the Huck. Peace and Love.
I was fortunate enough to see the full lineup of the Beach Boys with all the original members many years ago. They played a long show with so many great songs. With all due respect to Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, this touring band they have (no Brian, no Carl, no Dennis, no Al,) ain't no Beach Boys.
Every time Mike Love tells Beach Boys history, he magically wrote more of the songs. It is well known in Beach Boys lore that Audree Wilson (Brian, Carl and Dennis' mom and Mike's aunt) frequently talked of the vibrations that animals felt from people. Mike used to take credit for just coming up with the "I'm pickin' up good vibrations..." riff, but suddenly here he wrote the whole song on the way to the recording session...
I lived in Hawthorne, CA. home of the Beach Boys from 1958 to 1964. Still love their music!! For 9th grade I went to Hawthorne High School where the Beach Boys went.
Mike Love hated Pet Sounds, he wanted Brian to stick to the “formula”...he actively discouraged him from working on Smile. Now he’s just trading on the good name of The Beach Boys.
@@pancakelegend7826 Brian came up with "I'm picking up good vibrations" because of something his mother told him when he was young. The rest was written by Mike.
@@pancakelegend7826 As much as I agree that GV is Brians baby, Mike is responsible for the entire set of lyrics on it. Written on the way to the studio, as he explains in the video. Now, that does not equal to 6 months of tinkering in the studio? No, but it is certainly not a worthless effort and it deserves to have a mention. And they are really good lyrics. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is a different story. There he gets credit for one line, which adds no momentum to the song. The man may have his flaws but he also has his talent. Just like the rest of the guys.

The Beach Boys were able to capture the feeling of summer surf and fun in their songs , nobody has ever come close to them in that regard , their legends and icons in the world of music , truly wonderful , and their still touring , simply amazing .
After the author mentioned what he had in mind when writing "I write the songs", I searched for it on the Internet to remind myself of the words of this song and whether this man realized it I do believe that God inspired him. I was so blessed this morning to listen to that song with a new perspective. Thank you for this tidbit that just made my day.
This video made me smile. I grew up in the 80’s and Kokomo was a favorite of my 9 year old ears. There music has brought so many people joy. Most big fans of them are generally good people. Thanks Mike, Bruce and Mike for great segment! 29 Beach Boys concerts in my 40 years. Only member I never saw was Dennis. I even got to see Glen Campbell come on stage in the early 2000’s and play with Mike and Bruce. If I’m down, I put their music on.
What a disgrace! The Beach Boys is Brian WIlson! He is the Lennon-McCartney of The Beach Boys, any music fans will know this. Only little mention of Brian WIlson?
That was a great interview it was nice to get an update on how the beach boys are doing. The song Good Vibration gave me a word on how I felt when I was listening to rock and roll.
I'd always heard it was "music" talking....."I've been around forever, and I wrote the very first song," etc. Either way, an awareness of a muse of a sort, etc! Also, check out Bruce Johnston's "Disney Girls" song....covered by many. Beautiful!
Thank you Mike and Bruce for keeping the Beach Boys franchise alive and well for nearly 60 years. Your musical inspiration is beyond measurable. There is not a single day at my house that a beach boy song isn't played. I write the songs is a wonderful piece but "Disney girls" has to be one of the finest works from Bruce with "Tears in the morning" following close second. Mike your lyrics are incredible and too many to mention. Thank you both!
As you give well-deserved mad props to the Beach Boys, never forget to include Brian Wilson in your celebration! Without Brian's compositions, Mike has nothing to add lyrics to, and Bruce has no band to join to bring him out of the studio as a producer (as he was starting out)! Long live Brian!
When Brian was healthy and at the height of his creativity The Beach Boys were certainly the Beatles' equal. Unfortunately, that did not happen often at all. The overbearing browbeating and douchiness of Brian's cousin (along with mental illness and drug consumption) was a big reason why.
The Beatles were miles ahead of everybody. The Beach Boys was Brian Wilson, from what I've read the rest of the band were sometimes replaced by session men.
Pet Sounds did inspire Pepper, but don't forget it was Rubber Soul that inspired Pet Sounds. If we're picking greatest band it's the Beatles beyond a doubt. Not even an argument. The Beatles had the jump on everybody.
A few years ago I saw The Beach Boys live at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. I returned home to Northern Minnesota and saw the Beach Boys again live in Northern Minnesota. I happened to have a VIP pass for the Northern Minnesota show and was able to chat with members of the band....they sure laughed at me seeing them two weekends in a row....different parts of the country. Then saw them again a 3rd time here in Bemidji,Mn a year or so later. They sure are a class act!!!
Mike Love would claim co-songwriting credit on anything he happened to hear someone working on. "Brian was working on a song, and I said "hey, that's really good""
My wife is a beatles fan and all i can say is...the beach boys don't have video games...itunes...sirrius satellite...album reissues etc. I have no dog in the fight but i dont think the beach boys are on that level
We saw the Beach Boys in a park in 2006 and were totally awesome. Saw them again a couple of years ago. The song content has changed but still a great show.
Mike love is the only original member and was never the driving force behind the beach boys.this is not the beach boys...bruce johnston is a great songwriter and wrote one of my favorite songs on surfs up.
Which one? Surf's Up? Till I Die?? Feel Flows?? Long Promised Road?? Easily the four best songs on the album, but I don't think Bruce wrote any of them.
The Beatles and the Beach Boys are my two favorite bands. The Beatles were definitely in competition with the Beach Boys. Check out the Beatles Anthology. The harmonies for "Paperback Writer" were influenced by the Beach Boys. The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" was heavily influenced by the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds."
This was great! I love the Beach Boys! I got to see them in concert in the early-mid 90s on City Island in Harrisburg, PA, my hometown. It was wonderful!
WOW!! Bruce thank you for sharing the background off I Write the Songs. You should substitute one of the "I make the young girls cry" to 'I make the old men cry,' because you sure choked me up listening to it again, just a minute ago.
International battle of the century THE BEATLES V. THE FOUR SEASONS. V.J. records 1964!!!!!! Beach Boys are awesome. But NO ONE holds a candle to FRANKIE VALLI!!!! HE is STILL performing with a reformed four seasons ALL over the WORLD!!!! The Beach Boys also recorded a record with THE FOUR SEASONS, EAST MEETS WEST. 1984.
These guys are not The Beach Boys most people have heard. Brian Wilson is the guy who made them tick. These chumps were passengers and now legally own the name. Without Brian, tbese guys would be selling insurance or used cars. Wow, Bruce managed to wear a pair of pants. The Beatles loved what BRIAN did. It's a cryin shame the least talented members are touring under his name. Bruce is a bonafide flake, just listen to this interview. Ever listen to Mike's solo records? I didn't think so........
Brian Wilson is the only true Beach Boy. Wrote all the songs. Brian is the only one who actually played on their records. Glen Campbell did much of their guitar work. Google "Wrecking Crew".
oh god.. mike love... come off it... He was always trying to come off trying to say they had a little something on the Beatles. PLEASE! Mike, you wouldn't be good enough to carry the Beatles guitars. Not even in the same league. Brian Wilson was at least musically talented and a decent song writer. But the overall musicianship of the two bands are not even in the same Ballpark. What instruments did Mike play. Sax??? How many hit songs did he write completely?? Music and Lyrics???? How many records did Dennis actually play on???? Try to be humble Mike. You were lucky to be a cousin.
I personally remember both groups and have seen both in concert. You can't really compare the 2, as their music was so different. Both were great talents but had different music. You don't need to make this a competition.
The Beatles accomplished more in 7 years than the Beach Boys have in nearly 60. And the Beatles' cover of "Rock and Roll Music" was miles better than the Beach Boys' cover. In this interview it's mentioned that PET SOUNDS inspired SGT PEPPER...but nobody reminded them that RUBBER SOUL first influenced PET SOUNDS!
I love Brian and the BB's, my all-time favorite group and person. However, the competition was more in the minds of Brian and the Boys than the Beatles. The BB's were very successful from 1963-1966 but the Beatles far outsold them and had many more number ones. I think the Four Seasons may have sold more records during this period than the BB's. Creatively Brian was right there with the Beatles but not in record sales or # ones. Mike just can't seem to let the BB's/Beatles thing go or the India story.
Disappointed in you Huck for promoting this shyster who fired the real talent of the original Beach Boys just to make it look like he was the band himself.
i bought mike's book when it came out...good read , recommended for all beach boys fans . btw , listen to " the nearest faraway place " from the beach boys 2020 album , written , arranged and produced by bruce...stunning .
If Mike Love didn’t stopped Brian Wilson’s creativity, then we would have had a real competition between The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Good Vibrations would be nothing without Brian or Carl.
