What it was like during the Horrifying FIRST DAYS of the YUUZHAN VONG Invasion 

Wow I really hope you do more of these NJO videos going alongside the TapCaf episodes. I’m reading along with y’all every week through the NJO series, this is my first time reading through them, and I’m very invested in this era.

I had kind of hoped this would be the sequel trilogy way back when its plot was unknown to us. F_ck0s were scary, and perfect for a pure evil antagonistic force that was alien to the entirety of the galaxy we fell in love with

I love the theory that the sith (palpatine) knew about an imminent galactic scale invasion. So that's why the Death Star was able to destroy planet size objects and not just to quel rebels.

To be fair, I think the Vong story arc could be exactly what the sequel era needs at this point. Audiences are clearly going to tire of the Imperial and Sith threat formula after all these Disney+ series and movies are done. Having a galaxy full of Jedi facing off against an exotic enemy like the Vong with their Lightsabre resistant armor and anti-Force technology would be quite refreshing. Taking the best bits from the novels and discarding the more cringy aspects would be the best approach.

The "Legends" books had tons of great characters, heroic battles, tragic endings and wonderful entertaining stories....Disney decided to go a different way and lost billions!

I love the Yuuzhan Vong aliens because they are completely different, they aren’t a Force that uses primarily ballistic based weaponry, No they went even farther and are super organic technology, completely contrasting the usual laser fights

Reading the books now and I was and am still sooooooooo choked about Chewie. I re read the paragraphs several times to fully absorb what occurred. The following Han story line is very deep. Love it.

I'm honestly surprised the Vong aren't from 40K. Between their religious extremism, the creepy biotech, and especially their obsession with pain and melee combat you'd swear they were the new race for 9th edition.

The Vector Prime novel presents one of the best arguments that I've ever seen (or read) that Mara Jade Skywalker needs to be made a fully canonical character, again. She killed a highly trained and experienced Yuuzhan Vong infiltrator with no prior knowledge of his people or their martial capabilities, while she was slowly dying of a bioengineered plague unleashed by the same species. I knew right then that she was Jedi Master material.

Wish we could've seen the Yuuzhan Vong War in the sequels.

Can't say I would have liked to have been there at the first days, or even at all during that time period

Yuuzhan Vong war: had Luke’s new Jedi order! Had Boba Fett as the leader of Mandalorian’s! Had the new republic! Had new Sith Lords! Disney: ehh just make one Jedi OP. Put little green guy in. Oh and don’t forget to kill off every character that everyone grew up with.

Literally, disney could've just kept the eu canon and made this the new trilogy if they really had no creativity to make up for decanonizing it

After the lame sequel trilogy I started reading this book series so far finished book 9. Still have a ways to go but I'm enjoying it.

I loved how terrifying they were in the first couple of books, but sadly it was such a big arc that they couldn't really keep that vibe up. Other than maybe the voxyn stuff. That got it back up in the original scary factor. If they had kept to the exgal planet method, it would have been a whole different series.

The New Jedi Order series is my most favorite series in all of SW. Such a nice change from the Empire. No planets destroyed because of a moon shaped super weapon. A moon and a biological storm. Amazing. If there is a Great Hyperspace Barrier surrounding the Galaxy, how were the Nagai and Tof able to enter the Galaxy from the Satellite Galaxies? The Marvel comic series was C canon when it was, but was S canon when it was not canon.

One of the best plots ever told in SWEU. I truly miss those days.

I always loved Nom Anor in this series, but man I wished we got more Shedao Shai. I kinda wished he lasted longer.

I remember reading Star by Star and shedding genuine tears when Anakin Solo died, and Leia felt her son die in the force. Absolutely gut wrenching. Since Disney ruined everything and a lot of people don't know: Anakin Solo: 14 years of age, youngest son of Leia & Han, Jedi Knight and brother to Jacen and Jaina. Gave his life fighting the Yhuzaan Vong in service to the Republic and his duty to the force and it was beautiful. The last time I read anything close to as beautiful was Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. And that's exactly how anakin died. Like a samurai. A cherry blossom gone before even the springtime of his youth. but the way it was written, he went out like a super nova. Respect.

The star fighters had a rough time. Their shields would get ripped away. You had to concentrate firepower from multiple angles if you wanted to hit their fighters. And you could not jump to hyperspace mid battle to retreat. I wish i read the rest of the NJO books. Only got half way.

NJO is my introduction to the old EU. Never finished but find it so fascinating. Love the lethality of the Vong. Please keep doing videos of the whole war!!!!

I began reading the New Jedi Order many years ago,when it first came out. I was especially interested in the Yuuzhan Vong war series,as it was such a interesting departure from the Rebellion/Empire storyline. It created new alliances where they were once enemies,introduced new characters & made established characters think & act"outside the box"in order to defeat this new threat. Even more so after seeing the travesty that the sequel trilogy became. The First Order was a sad rehash of the once powerful Empire,the characters,(all respect to the actors)were for the most part,poorly written & one dimensional,& the plot seemed to meander here & there,then just disappear. Could some things about the Vong be changed to more neatly fit the story structure? Sure,but the possibility is there for a refreshing new chapter.

I wish disney had the balls to do a live action Vong series but do it right. As a hard R horror/thriller. If they use all the body horror crap from the Vong and the violence from the war it would be freaking epic.

I was an old school EU fan, reading the books as they came out. But New Jedi Order was where I decided to stop. It was just exhausting. Losing whole planets made the struggles up to that point seem meaningless. And the Vong, the organic assimilating Borg-but-not-Borg pain and mutilation edge lords with endless made up accented names for all their species and technology ("Gzaa'Zhhn Khad fired a ch'ooogskpah from his ya'mul'kah'kip'pah") and it just feels like someone ramrodded their grade school Warhammer fiction into the Galaxy Far Far Away.

I like in the documentary written about how George Lucas said to the writers that they have to kill off a main character and that it has to be in some insane grandiose method. >Yuuzhan Vong has to drop a moon on a planet to kill one person(Chewbacca).

Don't know how I missed this one I loved NJO and the yuuzhan vong. My favorite era is legacy but mainly because it was set after the vong war had wreaked havoc on the galaxy. And I love cade skywalker

I loved this! I have always wondered what it was like in the Star Wars galaxy at certain galaxy changing points in time like this and I feel like this channel is one of the only places I can learn about it the way I would like to. I’d love for them to tell more stories about points in time such as-: first human-alien contact/war, or how the new cannon is going to treat the Jedi going forward will there forever be a handful light siders left like Rey n Ashoka I would definitely love to learn about characters that kinda went into hiding but didn’t actually get hunted down and how they made it out of there in one piece! “Sorry gunns it’s classified”. Ps I’d love a halo UNSC vs Star Wars republic (clone wars era) battle or a halo saber fighter vs an X wing or something !🤷🏻😝

Look guys, Disney isn't doing the Yuuzhan Vong. Disney is not interested in taking risks with Star Wars, whereas Novel Writers of the old EU clearly were (who were writing for clearly Adult Star Wars fans). They also clearly want to keep the franchise family-friendly, and aren't interested in dark sci-fi themes like the Vong. At best, they may get cameos in some animated Filoni show, but nothing more then that.

The Vong are THE Perfect Antagonists to challenge the Jedi, since the Skywalkee Saga is finished, a New Saga takes it's place as the New Jedi Order Saga, startimg with a Movie called "Star Wars: Season II".

I remember reading the yuuzhan vong stories as a kid in the nineties and keeping up with Jason and Jaina . Now that would have made a really great story even if they condensed it down to just the good parts. Now that I think about it Jason's story goes down a lot like Vader's story from the clone wars. He ends up seeing so much war it changes him scarring him until he thinks the only way to solve life's problems is with violence.

I don't know why people hate the Yuuzhan Vong, they were terrifying, cunning and nigh-unstoppable. Most importantly, they were a breath of fresh air from the formulaic stories of SW (Rebellion/Empire, Jedi/Sith).

I’ll never understand how people can hate the Vong storyline. It elevates Star Wars so much and it undermines everything you thought you knew about this universe in a fun and interesting way that doesn’t leave a bad taste in your mouth. Extragalactic aliens that are nearly immune to the Force, can disguise themselves as anything they want, terraform planets as they go, can combat all the tech in the galaxy with their organic creations and are a warrior caste driven society. What’s not to love about this.

So I‘m at book 11 of like 19 (I guess it‘s 19) and holy hell this is goooooood. I rly hope they make this into a new movies. They are so scary and different from everything we have ever seen in star wars before.

i’m sure i’m in the minority here, but i never liked the concept of the Yuuzhan Vong. extra galactic threat with exotic technologies that threatens the whole of the galaxy? sure, that’s an exciting plot line. but making them Force resistant, to me, doesn’t make sense within the universe and feels like a narrative cop-out. The Force is supposed to be an omnipresent, quasi-sentient energy that is created by life itself. The living essence of the universe itself. It surrounds and binds all that exists, both matter and energy, living and inanimate. the concept of anything, let alone a living species, being ‘outside of the Force’ should not be possible unless the Force is somehow finite in my opinion, the writers simply utilized a common trope of “the hero’s powers are ineffective” to try to create a threat that could challenge them. which is a bit too cliche and a bit too ‘sci-fi’, in the stereotypical sense

Unfortunately this arc was so hated at the time of release in certain circles..it seemed to mellow over time though. I think most of it had to do with release schedule. 18 novels between 1999 - 2003. Given the target audience...that was alot to digest and expect them to actually keep up with what was happening. It was alot of books to read in a relatively short time. And starting us off with a major char death and other events there was no time to really think about what had happened in the stories. Some of the books were released almost less than a month apart from eachother early on it was sort of a break neck pace that just would not slow down.

Thank god the sequels are here... Rey Palp-Sky-Identity thief will solo YOLO all these invaders. In the incredibly unlikely event any get past her, the Reb...Resist.... actual Government can just Holdo Maneuver them.

My personal head cannon is that the vong are just wayfaring Gith'yanki and gith'zerai from the ForgotteN Realms and that the Galaxy Far Far Away is just another crystal sphere in the phligiston.

I wonder if the Yuuzan Vong is the greater threat that the Chiss Ascendancy is trying to fight against in the current Canon. I wonder if they'll be referenced in the Ahsoka series, since they're going to be traveling far from the main galaxy.

Palpatine knew about the Vong coming thus he decided to make his own galactic empire out of his own galaxy by trying to put all of its inhabitants into submission. Yeah smart move indeed Plapadude. You know, Palpatine could've avoided all the disaster he faced if he only shared what he knows to the rest of the species or inhabitants of his galaxy and form some sort of a united galactic alliance to deal against the threat of the Vong, you know, like asking people around politely for help instead of rudely banging at their doors and forcefully taking everything they had just to have resources to deal against a threat which in reality, turns out to be a danger for everybody thus making it everyone's problem. It might just be that dealing against the Vong was Palpatine's intial plan until, after seeing what the galactic empire is capable of, he was consumed by personal interest, corrupted and decided that it is much better to put an entire galaxy under his power seeing how much power he can gain and then dealing with the Vong becomes a second if not outright forgotten goal...

Legends EU is so superior to Canon in so many ways and is what kept SW alive after ROTJ. So good.....

I read most of the vong war but i missed and am looking forward to the reading of Coran Horn's actions. I missed it originally.

I always loved how Nom Anor kept changing his grift to try to keep coming out on top. A very interesting villain.

While I find it strange that the New Jedi Order is like a rated R conversion of Star Wars, it went all the way with their alien invasion idea.

Loved this video. NJO is my favorite Star Wars book series and its what got me into Legends as a kid. You should def do more of these videos.

Reading NJO right now…only four books left. It’s been a blast. The Vong are a complex and strategic enemy that the New Republic and the Jedi have great difficulty countering. While some of the books seem to be mostly filler, it’s good action and intrigue that unmistakably feels like Star Wars. Some of my favorite things about the series are the character development of the Solo kids; the arms race between the New Republic and the Vong as they try to one-up each other’s tactics, technology, and overall strategy; learning more about the inner workings of the New Republic as well as some of the other factions in the galaxy like the Hapes Consortium and the Imperial Remnant; and the philosophical quest to arrive at a broader understanding of the Force and how the Vong could be completely absent from it. It solidifies my opinion that Legends is superior to Canon in almost every way.

The Skywalker Saga is amazing I am playing through episode I at my friends since he got the disc and it came in today I am having a great time and would recommend that if you have not yet pre ordered do it. I can’t wait to play at home when it downloads on Tuesday since I got the digital copy.

I made the mistake of reading the legacy of the force series first, and some of the NJO got spoiled for me but honestly it got really excited to read the series

Man, I remember reading Chewie's death like it was yesterday. The book had just come out and I brought it with me on a vacation to Orlando. I was sitting in the hotel lounge late at night reading this scene and I actually had to stop myself from saying out loud "they killed Chewie?!?" I was really upset, lol.

A. Salvatore, said something like they were inspired by some of his previous RPG work (he's best known among DnD fans for his creation, Drizzt Do'Urden, the Dark Elf/Drow Ranger of the 'Forgotten Realms' setting).

#AskEck Do you have any Empire At War ship/faction mod recommendations that don't include changes to the AI. A lot of promenant mods contain AI tweaks, due to the more dedicated players finding the base game too easy. Unfortunately, my experience with some of said mods has resulted in the AI becoming far more aggressive and powerful than I can keep up with, especially in Campaign and Galactic Conquest modes.

I listened to the tapcaf podcast today. I actually found the book when it came out because I was a fan of R.A. Salvatore's books. I had sworn off the star wars books (with the exception of the X-wing novels) because as you guys mentioned all the main characters were always safe. I LOVED the New Jedi Order. Can't wait for the rest of the podcasts/content

Would you do a video on vehicles and ships used by the New Republic? I'd love to see a comprehensive list of the ground vehicles, starships, and capital ships used by the NR! And it's still a travesty that we got NOTHING about the New Republic in the sequel trilogy, and they even cancelled the Rangers of the New Republic which just makes it suck more.

I'm interested in this period of galactic history, but it does sometimes grate on me when they simply come up with an organic counterpart for every non-biological technological device with which we're already familiar, with a minimum of effort put into explanation or rationalization. I know that Star Wars is... whatever a person wants to call it; space fantasy? Space opera? Space myth? But for all the technical depth put into much of the more familiar Star Wars technology, to have something come along with "organic is *better*" and then go "Here's our organic blaster/gravity well/universal translator" it feels like lazy writing.

This should have replaced the First Order...

Man, my biggest issue issue with the NJO storylines is how they introduce an enemy as cool, intimidating, threatening, and alien as the Vong, and then basically have them never pose a threat to the main characters. We’re told that they are this huge threat, we see some of the things they can do, and then the heroes just kick the shit out of them pretty every engagement we see.

I keep seeing empire at war with the vong but haven't found any mods with those ships in them what mod is this does anyone know?

I really, really wish Lucasfilm had done this instead of the sequel trilogy we got. Hell, id kill to see them work this in future movies. I know it wouldn't be quite the same, but the Yuuzhan Vong threat would be great to explore.
