What Killed The Rotary Engine?

What killed the rotary engine? Wankel engines have struggled to compete with piston cylinder engines, despite their many benefits and overall simplicity. Rotary engines have a long, growing combustion chamber as the rotor spins, making complete combustion difficult - not great for fuel economy. They’re also difficult to seal, and since you have multiple chambers at different stages of combustion, proper seals between chambers is critical. To help promote a good seal, oil is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber. All of this results in an inefficient engine with terrible emissions. You might think that because all of these negative factors exist, it's done for good, but Mazda actually brought back the rotary engine in the MX-30, acting as a single-rotor range extender!

I used to sell Mazdas back when the RX8 was new. I loved test driving them and they were a blast as long as you drove them aggressively. I remember we had one come back with a blown engine after about 4 months because the buyer tried to drive it gently and keep it under 3000 rpm. The mechanics at the dealership said you have to drive them at high RPM for the engines to last. That makes them fun but that's a hard dynamic for the average consumer to get and be willing to live with.

Their critical flaw is that the same part of the engine that's supposed to make the seal is also the same part of the engine that is constantly being worn down via friction. Rotary engines literally destroy themselves as a consequence of their own operating principles.

@volvo09
@volvo09 28 дней назад
@@AxianMapping piston rings have an easier time doing their job though. They are round and only have the cylinder walls and the ring lands to seal off. In a rorary you have the apex seals (which need springs to give them tension), and seals between the rotor sides and combistion chamber, it's like qlat least 12 pieces, maybe more if the side seals have springs too.
@ironbeagle1610
@ironbeagle1610 27 дней назад
@@volvo09also a piston ring just has to contain a single combustion chamber. While the seals on a rotary engine are constantly working to separate what is essentially several chambers all at the same time, all in different combustion stages. Also it occurs to me that for every rotation of the engine, the rotary seals are experiencing a lot more movement, and this movement is a lot more chaotic and violent when compared to the comparatively simpler back and forward motion of a traditional piston.

With those each single gram to spare is super important and having a tremendous amount of Power. For that they use for example Titanium Printed Parts and... a in-house designed Wankel Engine! One engineer told me: because they are only a few dozen flying around the emissions don't matter, the engines are only meant to fly a few missions so short longevity doesn't matter, its operated by a few companies and militaries so money to service doesn't matters, what matters the the size, weight to performance ratio and that is a given.

Apex Seals & emissions, mainly. A *healthy* RX8 gets 16mpg city & 22mpg highway. Thats Mustang GT fuel economy numbers from the same years. And that number gets a lot worse if those apex seals aren't doing their jobs. Also, rotaries burn oil. My apex seal pet theory is that the tolerances are poorer, the motion more complex and less repeatable than piston rings. You also have multiple seals using the same cylinder wall. End result is the seals can't wear-in, severely limiting the life and sealing performance.

But wouldn't a rotary produce more power than a four-stroke per rotation despite being less efficient since it completes three combustion cycles per rotation compared to the four-stroke's one combustion cycle every two rotations? I mean just take a look at the 2.6L 4R Mazda 787B which produces 700hp at 9k rpm where a late F1 V8 has to rev over atleast 15k rpm to produce similar power figures Edit: I was off in saying a rotary fires three times per rotation when in actuality it's once per rotation of the crank since the crank and rotor spin at different speeds
@martyscholes119

You are close. The crank spins at three times the speed of the Dorito, so a complete combustion cycle happens at every turn of the crank. That’s also why they have high RPM numbers: when the crank is spinning at 12,000 RPM, the Dorito is only spinning at 4,000 RPM. They have horrible thermal efficiency (bad MPG) but absurdly high specific output (power per displacement). I recall that every racing body has either outright banned or handicapped the rotary engine because of its high specific output.

I love the sound and feel of a rotary, it can be improved, if you make surfaces of the irons and rotor housings more durable. I'm pretty sure I could increase the lifespan of a housing by 300-500% with no or very little oil, and one day when I get money, actual money, and not just trying to survive, I'll show you guys how it's done. Efficiency eh not so much of a improvement, the variable rpm range makes it hard to maintain efficient combustion. It's actually a efficient engine under certain conditions. That's why the hybrid route is actually quite smart, they can tune it to a certain rpm, because a generator produces stable output at stable rpms.

The Pacer and Monza were supposed to get rotaries, but GM canceled the engine because it was too dirty and inefficient.

So they stuck a V8 in the Monza and I believe the official way to change spark plugs was to loosen the engine mounts and jack the engine up a bit. The unofficial way was to use a hole saw and cut holes in the fender wells. When not needed cover the holes with cut up inner tubes and rubber cement.

@@dlewis9760 I've heard that, but wouldn't know, I had an "odd fire" V6 Sunbird.
