#1) because of Kpop and dramas some foreigners, who havent been to Korea, have certain fantasies/illusions/preconceived ideas about Korea and Korean people. What do you think about those foreigners?
2) What do you think of foreigners who like Korean culture?
3) what do you think of foreigners who speak fluent Korean and know the culture well?

Ok. I have always been able to love kpop and kdrama without attaching South Korea directly to the overly romantic image portrayed in most of the media. I don't get why people don't understand this? Lol. Just like people who love Japanese pop culture think everything in Japan is "kawaii" and full of anime. No. NO. Lol.
@imaminxkitty

***** Nah, dude. It's cool. At least you understand. It's OK to appreciate a culture and the things that come from it people shouldn't associate what they know from a movie or two with the entire culture. For example the word "otaku" god I hate that word so much when people use it to categorize themselves. If people knew what that term was really associated with in Japan they would NOT use it. Otaku is an epidemic and normally looked down on in Japanese society. If someone went to Japan and claimed themselves an "otaku" people would laugh at them.

Well their is a difference between being a weeb and being a otaku , being a.weeb is because you watch anime and love it you want to be in Japan you act like a Japanese girl some weebs think that any thing that's Japan related is a part of the otaku world ( being a weeb is not only just Japan or Korea being a weeb is basically being a wanna be for certain things) Being a otaku is basically a true anime fan , it's only for anime fans , being a otaku is to appreciate the author , and watch anime ,you might love Japan but not were the point you have high expectations

I think race preference is okay.. but not to the point where you ONLY want that certain race or have unrealistic expectations from that race. I enrolled into a school last year and I met a girl who listened to K-Pop on the first day. She approached me and asked if I was Korean to which I said yes. her reply was "I knew it! I can tell just by looking at you"... The thing is, I DONT look like your average Korean as I'm mixed blood, so when I asked her what it was about me that made her think I was, she said just your "aura"... whatever that means? Anyways long story short, in the end she admitted that she was obsessed with Koreans after months of trying to convince me that it was nothing more than an interest.. Safe to say that I'm kind of turned off from hanging around with her.. as I feel like a novelty rather than a human being, by being around her...

I've met a few girls in my lifetime that were just as you had described. Situations where they will say, "Oh, I only listen to kpop," or "I really want a Korean boyfriend/girlfriend" or "I want to go to Korea because I want to meet _____(some kpop idol/group/actor or what have you)", have always made me feel uncomfortable. I look at these people and I shake my head because they don't seem to genuinely like the culture and the people for who they are, but rather they like the glamour and images that they see in the media (kpop/kdramas) and then they begin to create these false/unrealistic expectations. When it comes down to it, conversating with those kinds of people can get really uncomfortable especially when you are the people they are obsessed about. And I agree, it makes you feel like you have no real human value, like you're a trophy to be put on display. *Sigh*, But the only thing you can do is wish them the best and hope that one day they'll have a change of mind.

Then YOU, Sir, are the person from whom I need insight (and you may wanna sit down, this may take a minute lol). Okay, I've been raked over the coals on several occasions when I've mentioned I have a preference for Asian men. Though, I state it is not to the exclusion of other nationalities, I still get accused of being racist again my "own people". I admit, there was a time when dating a Black man was repulsive to me, but that wasn't due to being racist, but was caused by some traumatic childhood experiences that I've since worked on. I now I exclude no one as long as he has the qualities I want. Now, here's where I need your insight (if you're willing to give it lol). Even though my interest in Asian men is fairly recent, to me, it is NOT a fad. There was a time I didn't find Asian men attractive at all, but getting to know Asian culture has in turn created a fondness in my heart for their features. So here's my question: IF--and I am well aware the chances are slim to none, but--IF I met an Asian guy who also had all the qualities I want, how to I make him understand that I love his features without it sounding like what your friend was doing to you? I mean, I want him to know I love his almond-shaped eyes WITHOUT him thinking that's the ONLY reason I'd love him. You being on the other side of such a compliment could give me great insight on how that would make a guy feel. Cuz the last thing I'd want to do is finally meet my dream guy, then creep him out. Thanks for whatever help you're willing to give 😊.

Sissy maye maye First of, I just want to say that those who call you racist are ignorant and are completely misusing that word... People have preferences and that's okay, but as long as it's not due to false fascination that you may have picked up from somewhere then it's okay.. I myself prefer to only date Asian girls (but I have dated others before), that doesn't mean I'm racist to other people and their ethnicity... it just means that I have a preference, as I'm sure other people in the world will too. Now to properly answer your question, you DON'T NEED TO "make" him know that your fascination in Asians are not pure... if your attraction to Asians are pure then it should just be obvious and they should be able to pick it up. If it's for a bad reason then that too should be obvious, I mean you can be sneaky about it.. but in the end it will most likely come out (like in the case of that girls who I mentioned in my original post). Just be yourself.. if your qualities and such attracts him then that should be enough. Love and attraction shouldn't have to be about proving a point or whatever, it should just be. So like I said, just be yourself, if he thinks your feelings are genuine and he's attracted to you, then no matter what race, ethnicity, religion or whatever.. if he or she feels that it's genuine then it should work out. (And of course, if it's right). I hope that helped... sorry, I'm not really knowledgeable when it comes to relationships and what not >

YongRa Ssi I just kind of have a low tolerance for people like that.... I mean if you genuinely love my culture and my people then I am more than happy to support your love and such.. but if it's purely due to idols and / or the Entertainment Industry in Korea... then that's just wrong. Some girls / boys literally turn the Korean / Asian race into a fetish... and that's just.. not right. It makes us feel lousy and even used. I've had instances where people only wanted to be friends with me because I was Asian / Korean and in the end, well the friendship just didn't end nicely.

I got into Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture, because of the music and things like that. But, I didn't just sit here and think that's all there was to it. I don't get how people can be so obsessed with ONLY the music or have this fantasy that everything is anime, k-dramas and rice/noodles. Not only is that disrespectful and racist, but it's also just stupid because there are SO many amazing and different things about the aspects of all Asian countries. Also, I know not all Korean and Japanese people look the same, obviously, but I've seen a lot of them (famous and not) and they're extremely attractive. From the ones that I have seen, they have very beautiful features, female and male.

It's not really racist to only be interested in one aspect of a culture because that might just be a person's own opinion of something they really like, and they might not be interested in learning about the culture further, which is perfectly ok.
@bonbonbonny
@bonbonbonny 8 лет назад
Phan Lestell No no, I didn't mean THAT was racist. I meant that thinking Asia is only "small eyes" (I've heard people say this before and wow is it annoying), noodles, sushi, kpop, and anime. People actually think that's all there is to it and to me, it's disrespectful cuz it's like saying black people only have gangs, dark skin, the hood, drugs, and soul food. It's like they're saying there's nothing more to the culture than the stereotypes, you know?

I think people who rely on the media and the entertainment industry believe that the the way a specific ethnicity or race is represented is representative of how they really look like and behave which is obviously wrong ! Relying on how the media presents people only lead to misconception and ignorance because it only intentionally highlights certain points of the reality and ignores others. for instance, people who have interest in Korea but only for their Korean Dramas and K-pop have a misconception of how life in Korea really is like and how people really look like and they omit that Korean culture has much more to it than just those 2 aspects. Or people who have a fetish for black women because they only look up to how they're over-sexualized in the media and presented as sexual objects in music videos etc. But I could go on with basically any stereotypes or misconceptions people tend to have about other countries and cultures by only relying on the media. Another example: people who think that Africa is just a big country with people living in poverty and in huts near wild animals when in fact it is a huge continent with many countries that have their specific cultures, customs, cuisine and lots of different languages etc but since they've never gone there, their perspective is ignorant and definitely misconceived. ***** (Btw Beyoncé is Queen but she is not representative of how black women look like. some are curvier, some thinner, some lighter, some darker, some with natural hair, some with relaxed hair, some with weaves and we should appreciate our differences and embrace them instead of thinking that looking like Queen B or Ciara is the only type of beauty standards for black woman ! They are gorgeous indeed but they are not representative!)

Because of Kpop I have branched into and I am learning other parts of korean culture. There are ups and downs but overall it so interesting to take a peek into another culture outside of my own. 은/는 and 이/가 is one of the most frustrating things ever. The difference is so subtle that it's almost impossible to actually learn when to use each one by studying the difference. Instead it just comes from hearing lots of examples of Korean sentences. I'm still learning and still struggle to use 은/는 and 이/가 properly all the time.
@geowhit88

Andrew 입니다 I didn't get it either until one day it just made perfect sense. If the hangeul word ends in a consonant you use the subject marker that begins with a vowel and vice versa.
@MotoAB21
@MotoAB21 9 лет назад
geowhit88 Haha I understand that, it's more of when to use 은/는 and 이/가, since they both serve the same purpose (or at least a very similar purpose) it's hard to know when to use 은/는 instead of 이/가 and vice versa. :p

I think if you'd go there only because of kpop without knowing anything about the culture, behavior, food or the country...then your unrealistic "dreams" would be crushed. I truly love Korea for what it really is. Beautiful country and people.

I think this is very similar to the way people feel about NYC or Hollywood. The streets are not paved with gold, everyone is not famous. Living and surviving in NYC is really hard for the average person. You can walk down the same streets and look at the same stores but very few people are living like the movies or Sex in the City. Tourists see one thing because they're only here a few days and real NYers experience something very different. And famous people are just as messed up as everybody else. It's best to take things one day at a time, one experience at a time, no matter where you are.
@dylanakent
@dylanakent 9 лет назад
I can't tell you how many people from other places have wanted to be my friend over the years, go out with me, hang out with me, etc. simply because I am a NYer. I can spot them a mile off now. It's weird. They think something magical is going to happen to them simply by association.

I'm living here right now and always feel a bit like a weirdo (because I can't speak Korean like you, in fact barely at all) so when people are kind and open like that it melts my heart. I know I am the n00b in this scenario (and really need to learn Korean lol) but I do think it shows how kind the Korean people are in general. I have had some really amazing experiences here where people have gone out of their way to be nice to me, and it's really heartening to see this positive attitude broadcast around the world. On the other hand there are several Americans who may not agree with the Korean standard of beauty. I have plenty of male and female friends (Americans) who have seen photos and videos of the "hot" Korean idols that they think are just cute but didn't think they were all that drop dead gorgeous. But most of these guys withhold Victorias Secret type looking women as their ultimate fantasy girls. Another example of beauty being subjective. I saw a photo of Angelina Jolie that Koreans have photoshopped to make her look more attractive for Korean standards. The final results were compared with the original photos and I personally didn't find the doctored photos to be attractive. They made her cheeks more rounder making her look more cute taking away any of the angular shape of her facial bone structure. Her face was was shorter as they reduced her chin, eyes rounder and they made her lips a lot smaller. Too bad I can't find the link to this photo so I can share with you all.

I think it's really nice that Koreans are more accepting of people who are trying to learn more about their culture, whereas in certain places you get sorta bashed for wanting to learn about a culture other than your own. It's a bit sad that people can be like "Oh, you only like Japanese things because of anime," or "Oh, you only like Korea because of k-dramas or k-pop" when really those are just some of the nice things that come along with learning about the culture, though there are some people who are really obsessive and do only like those things. I respect South Korean culture and am pretty interested in learning the language, though it's tough, and more about the culture just due to liking it and hopefully traveling there when I get older lol.

i would like to hear random korean people's views about plastic surgery and physical appearance. korea has a reputation for an obsession with physical appearance, and extremely high rates of plastic surgery, so when i look at some korean people i wonder if i'm seeing what korean people really look like, or something artificial. i wonder what the average korean thinks about this.

It depends where you live. But since 1/3 of Koreas population is in Seoul... Most people are OKAY with Plastic surgery, however my friends and some of my family don't like it... Generally it's accepted, but only a certain amount... and no one really specifies that amount because... well it varies with the individual. I'm okay with surgery as I plan on getting some work done myself, but my sisters are against it and so are some of my friends. To answer your question properly, the general population LIKES to think that they're against it... but due to the popularity of it and how widely accepted it is.. Most just go along with it. Very few are vocal and are against it.

mad dusa We have a saying in Korea that if they look like an idol or someone famous that they've had a procedure done xD Of course this isn't completely accurate, but it's just the general tool that we use to guess.. because well, you can only really know someone has done it if you asked them yourselves (or if it's really obvious). Also you would find that a lot of people would wear masks (on days where it doesn't require one) probably had something done.

I'm not a huge Kpop fan but FOR MOST I bet that they'll still think it's the best country in the world LOL - the fantasy doesn't end when you go to the country, and even if it's less desirable, they'll find a way to make it even more desirable than it was before. A good example is Korean men, a lot of them ARE good looking, but if they weren't exposed to Kpop they probably wouldn't find them that attractive (this is with all asians though, I swear people thought we were like the least attractive race before kpop and now it's like ASIANS WOW). Now everyone goes crazy over them HAHAHA

gr8fashionfever I didn't think it sounded like I was saying Koreans are the majority of asians what LOL, I'm Chinese and I realised that BEFORE Kpop even I didn't find asian guys that attractive. The squinty eye thing wasn't attractive to me or to a LOT of people, but now having squinted eyes doesn't matter because Kpop changed the game. Now people are like 'Why are they getting double eyelid surgery, they should keep their eyes - whoever thinks they're ugly is stupid!' But those people are the people that never liked them before.I should've said East-Asians then, the ones that people call 'oriental.'

I really enjoyed this video. In fact, I find all of your interview videos interesting. It's great to see some Korean's perspective. I think it's interesting that the general consensus about foreigners with fantasies is that they should be able to separate fantasy from reality. In all honesty, it's not really fair to place high expectations on Korean people due to what's shown in Korean dramas and Kpop. This did get me thinking about another question you could ask for next time. Do Korean people generally interact with foreigners with an open mind? Do Korean people have any -slightly unrealistic- expectations of foreigners? (Or do they have any expectations when visiting other countries in a way that's similar to foreigners and Korea?) Does the "average" Korean apply the same principle from above to foreigners and other countries, a principle that some Koreans hope foreigners will apply to Korea? You get what I mean? I feel like the general answer would be yes, but maybe there are better questions that will allow more in depth responses on this topic. Of course, we can't hear every Korean persons response; however, it'll be fun to hear from a few. I can't remember if you've done anything like this, but it's an idea. Keep up the interviews. They're very insightful.

Is it bad that I don't even know if I like the culture or not??? Like, I really really really want to learn the language because I think it's so beautiful and it's basically music to my ears. Plus, there are certain more modern things in Korea such as cuisine and housing and schooling that I believe are way more efficient and useful than where I live and really want to experience that... But at the same time I really like kpop and dramas and I just feel like I'm offending everyone by doing so... Of course I don't think all of Korea is just drama and kpop based but I also don't know that much and I'm trying to educate myself... (Excuse my worrywart comment, I just really hate offending people or making their culture feel so underrated)

I too like the structure in general and the pride in schools, as well as the school clubs but not having grades on how much you participate in class or not discussing much and having only the teacher talk most of the time is not good either. Not to mention the higher student suicide rate because of the higher pressure put on students. A western asian mix would be great sometimes. I am from germany by the way ^^

this comment is so real. I think that it's totally fine to like something from a foreign country without becoming that countries expert. its also ok if you choose to learn more about a culture because of something simple like their music. that doesn't mean that you are romanticizing their country. it just means you are brave enough to like something outside your culture, even when people are still so sensitive when someone likes something not from their country, or when someone not from their country likes something from theirs. You should never feel guilty about having an interest that originates from somewhere else :)

South Korea is indeed a beautiful country with an even more beautiful culture,but there is a lot of shitty stuff going on in Korea that kpop fans don't even bother to pay attention to. Just because you know what kimchi is and how to call your friends/siblings doesn't mean that you are educated about South Korea. The Korean language is absolutely beautiful and it needs dedication to learn it. You shouldn't just learn it "for your oppa" but for the culture and for what it really is. Anyway, my goal right now is to at least be able to totally comprehend the language before I graduate from college next year /crosses fingers/ I don't actually plan on living in Korea (nope not in North Korea either absolutely not). I mostly saw kpop as more of a introduction into Korean culture, what the media portrays is going to play a big role in your expectations, but you have to look at it realistically. There are many different ways that America is portrayed in the media and it's up to the person to decide what they're going to take from that. It's all about staying open-minded, respectful and optimistic. Tv and reality are different..

I'm seeing all these comments about Koreaboos and I just started getting into Kmusic ( mostly khiphop and rap ) and maybe two kdramas because I thought the language sounded really pretty and flowed well ( which makes me want to learn it, even though I won't really use it) and I wish to learn more about Koraen culture besides that. I really do not want to somehow evolve into a Koreaboo, I find it disgusting that people turn race into a fetish, just like loving someone just for their looks. I really hope that I never become someone who would be as low as befriending someone just for being Korean not even for their personality, because that is really low.

This video has a lot to do with me. Lately I realized the Korea I have been in love at about 24 months is a fantasy and it's not korean fault. It's me who is blind for reality and that is not good. As Brazilian I am very sad the stereotypical view people have about my country. Many foreigners thinks Brasil is only slums and crime cuz they only know the reality of some suburbs in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Others think Brazil is just fun because only know brazilian carnival. Still others think Brazil is a jungle inhabited by natives and ferocious wildlife. There is a bit of this and that but there is much, much more. I do not want to squeeze Korea within this small mold as I have done because I will be definitely disappointed. I know there is much more than hot handsome actors and K-pop idols. I would like to learn how to speak Korean because it would facilitate discover the true colors of Korea.

I'm half Korean and I have nothing wrong with people liking Korean culture or music however it's the people who basically consume themselves in kpop and kdrama basically fight people over it, is where I cross the line. I feel like they are really scary people and take everything to the extreme for example there is this drama it was playful kiss there are two other versions Japanese and Chinese but their only reason for liking the Korean one is because of Kim hyung joong!!! Like come it's scary that people obsess over they're bias to a point they bully other people!!!! I occasionally watch kpop mv then go to read the comments and it's usually this huge drama of foreign people saying stuff. Other than that I think it's cool when people like Korean stuff like food or culture or even just the language !! But they still stay true to themselves as individuals :)!!!

In that case they are just crazy haha! there are crazy fans for every music artist or movie or anything you can be a fan of not just Kpop. In terms of super crazy people there are even Koreans in Korea who are crazy and obsess over famous people. Its not just a problem with Kpop fans. :) And people with that type of obsessive personality if it wasnt Kpop will probably be obsessing over something. Not defending them just saying my 2 cents ha.

Hahahahahahaha I know what you mean actually! I met some people like that, I went to a meet and greet for famousamos (wookong) and these girls were like all talking about their "bias" and going crazy over like a music album in a store. I thought they were nice people, until that happened, I got a little scared because they were going crazy over like an album a freaking album. Lol. Idk. I don't get it! But they were nice. Just too crazy for me.

I agree with every word what you've just said. This is quite typical and concerns me, but I've seen many kpop fans (Mostly my friends) wanting to learn Korean just because they are hearing a handsome kpop singer on stage. Imo, I don't find this conventional, but as you've stated, I find it more conventional if people want to learn the language for cultural and academic reasons. There is nothing wrong with liking biases, but learning a language just for that sole reason is unconventional in my perspective. :P

Oh, I'm old enough to remember Beatle Mania - in fact the current Hallyu culture w/the fan groups etc reminds me STRONGLY of that :D I can relate LOL

When I went to korea in December 2013 I went there loving Kpop and had high expectations, it died out after a week there after I realized that things aren't what I expected, but the whole reason that I went there wasn't to stalk idols or visit the companies or whatever, to be honest I just wanted to see the cultural places, go to where Koreans went and eat what they ate so during that trip I realized that I actually love the culture more than Kpop. I'm currently learning Korean bit by bit so that when I go there again this December I'll be able to converse with locals. When I went there the last time only my friend could speak Korean and legit the only Korean I knew were simple things like "where's the toilet" "excuse me" "thank you" "can I have etcetc" and "banana milk please." 😂

***** I wished I had your enthusiasm. If I were to go to Korea (or elsewhere) I wouldn't want to live a TV drama. I would like to deal with normal folks. The only celebrity I would want to meet is Megan and if I am lucky maybe she would take me to go get some of that delicious clay roasted duck she ate a while back. I had a wonderful Korean friend who is now back in Korea. That's as probably as close to it as I will come. Have fun on your trip.

I loved how everyone said that its a good thing that foreigners learn korean so we can share each other's culture. I totally agree. We are all human and must learn from each other. AMAZING VIDEO!!! You inspire me

Kwaija McFarlane The correct answer is: same as most of you fantasies about Paris, Britain, US and most of the countries, I am in US, I know. But if enough people BELIEVE IT HARD ENOUGH, IT BECOME TRUE!!! Remember that! Spread the word. Fantasies are stuff we created to satisfy our OWN NEED, it's neccessary!

I was a fan of korean drama when I was younger but as I got older my preference changed, I'm not a kpop fan but I like few songs that are catchy. Kpop and Korean dramas are very popular in my country which is the Philippines. I swear Koreans are all around our country, they prefer to live here and study which make me kinda confused. Whenever I go to malls, market or streets I see Koreans here. My kpop friends are like "Why did they leave their beautiful country in exchange of living here. Korea is so much better." Anyway, I think Korean culture is interesting but I have some things that I don't like, for example how popular plastic surgery in that country. I think almost everyone are so obsessed on how to look good. When I first knew this I was a bit disappointed because I feel like I can't trust their looks anymore. In my country only few people undergo surgery and a lot of us are religious people so we are contented on what we look like and what God gave us. Also I'm still curious why Koreans acts cute always? I can't explain it but I think you already get what I'm saying lol and lastly, I think their language is so hard to learn but yeah I still want to visit Korea someday.
