For me it's reason 3. I always have been learning only easy languages and I usually quit when it became hard. Now I'm 59 and I can read almost every german and romance language. Seven I can understand well and I can write in five, and I can explain you the grammar of those five. But I speak only one fluently, Dutch. As a child I learned Dutch and Swedish from my family and English, German and French at school, but not really good. Later I became interested in languages. Now I can go to countries like Germany, Sweden or Spain and I can buy and read the newspaper. I understand what people are saying to me, but saying something to them is really hard for me. And I'm having fun with Duolingo and with watching youtube videos in various languages.

I began watching Turkish content with subtitles, and started picking up words from it. Then I installed this app called Duolingo and it helped alot. Rosette stone is also a good one. Hinative is usefull to ask questions from natives. I tried a dozen apps and decided to stick with Duolingo and watching content in Turkish (with subtitles) There are some apps that teach via flashcards, very effective. Whichever works best for you. Start trying and you will find your way.

I want to be closer to other cultures, it can help me in film and business, I can have more diverse friends. I wanna watch Chinese dramas without subtitles, I wanna sing along with songs, I love the writing system, I like how it sounds, it's a gateway to learning Japanese, and so on. Chinese is not close whatsoever to my language English and I believe that makes it easier for me to learn because I don't get bored. Living Language is such a great language learning system. I have more Vietnamese close to me but I ain't got time for those 8 tones. I'm tryna keep it together with these 4. 哈哈哈。

I've been trying differently languages for years since highschool, and after graduating college I realized that I don't need to learn any more languages to be successful in my career or travel around. As native English speaker and programmer who only leaves the US to vacation, I realized that my time is better spent learning other things than languages I might only use online sometimes.
