That moment, at the start of the game when you come out of the tunnels and see the world stretched before you, just blew me away. That's when I knew that games had become amazing. Fallout 3 did the same when you first leave the vault

That has become a staple of Bethesda games. Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4, even ESO and Fallout 76 make a point of keeping the tutorial tight, then letting you loose on the world with a grand reveal basically saying "you see all this? All this land, all those places? Go ahead and explore, you choose where to go from now on"

I know right, It’s taking forever, for all this time spent these games are probably going to have an almost impossible fan standard to meet at this point. It also makes me super nervous that they might sell out and monetize it or make it an MMO of some sort which would totally ruin it in my opinion

@@BrianR146 True, they started working on starfield right after fallout 4 came out and they said they weren't using a new game engine, it's going to be so outdated compared to cutting edge tech by the time it's finished. The product is getting more streamlined, but the elder scrolls has really been dumbed down quite a bit. I have thousands of hours across Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, and they are all good in their own right. I escaped the sewers and was thrust into the most amazing open world I never could have imagined. My jaw hit the floor and I was literally in shock. this unfortunately will not happen, as much as I too wish it would. @greenscheme2040

Huh???? I played well over a thousand hours on Oblivion and never once did the main plot so you certainly weren't rushed to do it either. Not in any way, shape or form. I just went as far as becoming the Hero of Kvatch and NEVER EVER said a word to Martin once. If you do that the only Oblivion gate that ever opens is the first one. Talking to Martin triggers the software to open all the other gates. Main quest did not interest me in the least nor the repetitious (I hear) oblivion gates. The really excellent guild quests (thieves is my favorite but I like them all) and side quests and quirky characters and the fact that there is so much humor -- both intentional and accidental -- is what makes Oblivion my all time favorite game. Add in the Shivering Isles expansion which was fun as anything (I did the Knights one too but not as interesting) and who needs a main quest line. I'm just commoner John Doe living in Cyrodil and becoming the head of all the guilds and a god of chaos besides. Guess I just find main quests boring. Didn't get around to doing Morrowind's until last year haha. Had always stopped after I was immune to the corpus disease since I could care less about the Ashlanders. Maybe in another 5 years I'll try Oblivion's. Right now I'm playing Oblivion again with a standard hero Breton and also as a mischievous Khajit. I'm always playing it it seems.

@@greenscheme2040 I think I was referring more to Skyrim. I don't remember Oblivion's main story arc well enough anymore... I would prefer a game in which the main quest is gradually revealed, not given up front. Oblivion revealed too much right away, IIRC. Then in a few places it rushes you.
@PlayABetterGame
@PlayABetterGame 2 года назад
@@greenscheme2040 I am late but I had to write this: Morrowinds main plot starts out with: Released from prison, meet up with someone, join a faction, and then resume at a higher level. Oblivion on the other hand starts out with the emperor of the continental Empire getting assassinated, dying as he hands you the artifact that can stop demons invading with the instructions to meet up with the Blades leader who sends you to the illegitimate heir of the emperor. Morrowind allows you to step off the main quest by the first quest giver telling you to get a job. Oblivion doesn’t do that, so if you actually play a roleplaying game as well, roleplaying, then the most urgent thing to do is always the main quest. So it kind of does rush you because if again, you have any sense of urgency, you do the main quest. So it’s either forget about the main quest and roleplay, which doesn’t make sense. Or save Cyrodiil then roleplay, which from again, a roleplaying perspective, doesn’t make sense. TLDR: if your character in Oblivion has any sense of urgency, they do the main quest first and fast. Morrowind tells the player to get a job as literally the first mission, and since you aren’t aware from the start your the Nerevar reincarnate, urgency isn’t necessarily pushing you towards the main quest for at least a while.

I'm so happy everyone is talking about Oblivion again. This warms my nostalgic heart. Thank you Falcon and Gameranx. Oblivion and Fallout 3 were a golden era for Bethesda. Morrowind opened the door and Skyrim closed it but Oblivion and Fallout 3 were the sweet spots for me.

Speaking of TES. It'll probably take a decade before we get a sequel to Skyrim. At least I have mods lol.

@Magz fallout 76 was always going to be a worse project it wasn't really a passion project for bethesda is been hinted and shown to be an idea that corporate wanted. Only like a 3rd of the team work on fallout 76. It isnt really a bethesda game and I believe bethesda game studios have alot of passion for there next projects.

I have more faith in Beyond Skyrim than TES6. After the disaster that was Fallout 76, I struggle to believe Bethesda will be able to redeem itself.

Inventory management. I never paid too much attention to it in ANY game until I saw a friend’s dad play this game when it first came out. And it was BEAUTIFUL(even if at the time he was walking his horse up a damn near vertical mountain) and he passed up on some loot that an enemy dropped. I asked him why and he explained that he could only carry so much and that he never picks up unnecessary items unless they’re worth 10x their weight at least. I have applied this rule to almost every RPG with carrying capacities since. Skyrim, I often upped it to 15x. But I would watch my stepdad play and go back and forth in a dungeon to pick up bread and bowls to sell for a single gold coin each. Drove me nuts. And it helps with item management later in the game as well.

I feel that, if a game isn't beautiful, interesting, and engaging enough for someone to enjoy travelling across the map as well as the core gameplay and missions, it has no business being an open-world game... @ least here in 2020.

I would say Oblivion is that. If you walk everywhere you will find all sorts of interesting things in every corner of Cyridil. Like a tiny little village that you get to prank for Sheogorath.

Too many things to mention made this game great to me. The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild questlines were great! Poison apples, chameleon spells, the athletics and acrobatics skills that were removed in Skyrim. I loved all of this stuff and more. Plus there was an arena!

It was the largest open world game I'd ever seen, especially since in 2006 I was only used to games like Fable and Halo 2. Up to that time, realistically, Mercenaries was the closest I'd come to a truly open world game.

Beautiful game! Have a lot of good memories about it. The fact that weapons were degrade when using them, having to keep stuff to repair them made the game more of a challenge! May I say that Skyrim made the genre more accessible but at a cost...

Because Oblivion has, a charm, there is a feeling, a sense in the back of your mind, you can’t think about it or think on it, it’s just there, and it and you just fit in, like this world was made for you, personally. It gives you a feeling of, this world is all yours. Kind of like the feeling you get when your Dad says he’s proud of you son. It’s humbling, and you just smile. The Guild quests, the world, what goes on and what happens, nothing beats it.

I use to think that Skyrim was a much better game until I started playing Oblivion again after many years. Now I can't imagine going to Skyrim again. Oblivion is just better in many ways. Better quests, spell crafting, class selection or makeing your own custom class it makes roleplaying much more satisfying.

Oblivion was my introduction to Elder Scrolls. The quests were interesting, the Ayleid structures were fascinating. I had played many horror games at the time, and while you get introduced to one in the tutorial, the fact that the undead can wonder the dark corridors, really made me creeped out and highly anxious. Just because for a fantasy game, those undead were really detailed for an early 2000's game. The auests in the game had alot of heart to them. Like you felt you actually made a difference. In Skyrim, becoming a leader of the factions were like Meh. But in Oblivion, seeing how the gray fox was lifted of the curse, or the when you though Lucien Lachance was the traitor but it was you all along guided by another and the fate Lucien had received, and more. It had alot of heart. In ways that I think Skyrim lacked. The variety of enemies, more than just dragons and draugr were fun and interesting. Oblivion always started my hatred of Unicorns. I attacked one wondering what loot I would get but didn't have a magical weapon. And that Unicorn chased me all around cyrodiil for a long time. Waiting outside every house, terrifying and bullying me constantly.

I think what made this game so good was how inviting the environment is. Everything from the color palette to the types of trees and animals wants you to be there and explore. You almost wish you could be there.... Then there's the music! Which might be the best soundtrack ever made for a game.

Oblivion blew me away when I first played it. It was the first game I'd ever seen that was so big, and looked as good at it did. I remember staring at the night sky for like 20 minutes when I got my first HD TV. The fact that you could knock over every bottle, book, piece of silverware and item you could actually interact with was amazing. I found out about the scroll dupe glitch and filled someone's entire room with rubies, waited for them to come home, and when they opened the door an avalanche of red gems came down and knocked them over at 3 fps. At the time, the amount of dialogue, variety of items, weapons, intricate environments everywhere, and things like diseases and cures was more than I'd ever imagined from a game.

Yes a remaster would be great, especially if they added some variety to the oblivion gates. If I had the choice though, I'd pick Morrowind first. It was the first elder scrolls game I got into properly, and what caught me was the depth compared to everything I'd played earlier.
