24:37 I'd say Captain Qwark gets the perfect placement and amount of time in Deadlocked/Gladiator. His lack of kidnapping suggests even the Vox network sees how inauthentic he is. His relegation to voiceover only at the very end matches how inconsequential he ought to be.

I wholeheartedly agree. That cameo was just right. And they should have dropped Qwark right then and there entirely. Jim Ward is a great VA and could have had a spot as any other type of new character in the future series onward to keep that personality and comic relief present in the games instead of shoehorning Qwark into everything as though he should be forgiven for working with a galactic tyrant bent on ending the lives of trillions as well as probably killing many people of his own accord with the whole Protopet business. When you think about it, Qwark should be tried and executed

Yeah, it seems like what the series was building too. It started out as a platformer, then became more combat focused with 2 adding strafing and less platforming and 3 adding wave defence zones. Deadlocked was the logical conclusion of the direction the series was going. I'd say R&C1 and Deadlocked were my favourites on the PS2 simply because they felt like the purest iteration of each of the two approaches.

7:04 The only problem I had with the face-covering armor suits was that they covered Ratchet's face during cutscenes. In Ratchet Deadlocked, the helmet comes off for cutscenes, and goes on for combat, so it's fine. The full-face covering communicates a sense of greater danger, so it's good in this darker, more combat-focused game.

Yeah, I really like the Future Trilogy and even I can't deny the drastic tonal and character shift, I think the only reason it slipped under most people's radar was the console generational gap. I think their reasoning is almost entirely due to diminishing returns financially, which is really bizarre because even at the time that was a notoriously spotty metric for quality, and one would think a studio with their consistent track record of quality would know better. I think the lackluster sales for deadlocked are the fault of it being marketed as a spin off more than anything, if it was marketed as Ratchet and Clank 4 it would have sold comparably to Up Your Arsenal since it's basically the same thing but arguably better.

PS2 HD remasters are cursed. Rathet and Jak are full of graphical artifacts (and frame drops in the case of Gladiator/Deadlocked ), Silent Hill is screwed up beyond belief and DMC1-3 have severely damaged presentations, especially DMC3 cutscenes (hair transparency problems, missing depth-of-field blur and bloom, reduced speedlines, widescreen problems et cetera) and DMC1 as a whole.

@@skibot9974 The PS2 was notoriously hard to program for, so I guess it has to do with specific hardware functions that would have to be reprogrammed in when porting the games to other consoles (like many effects in Devil May Cry 3). Honestly this imo is the best game out of the older PS2 generation , in terms of story , stake , characters and base plot along side with the best Gameplay the Franchise has used. If anything I hope that this game would get a remaster or a remake just to add more variety in challenges , optional content and more indepth enemy veriety. A shame seeing Insomniac views this game a failure , and we will never see this type of Games from them nor' any acknowledgement in future titles :( But overall I say this game still to this date is one of the most fun games one can play. And is worth a playthrough if anything. And I will say that this game had THE best looking wepons and Armor in the games and the Helmet he rocks in this one is dope af !

I'm finding it a little harder to recall great platforming from Ratchet and Clank, than, say, Super Mario 64. I suppose putting more platforming in Ratchet Deadlocked (I recall a few platforming configurations of the battledome tower) amounts to taking a little more inspiration from TV shows like American Ninja Warrior, or Takeshi's castle.

>”refined gameplay and storytelling” >”Ratchet & Clank 3” Bruh what? I think you’re seriously forcing a pattern into existence that didn’t actually exist. Ratchet 3 had the most refined controls…but that’s about all it has going for it. The level design and gunplay took a downgrade from 2 and 1. And Deadlocked is far from a full bout-face, considering it just takes the mediocre gauntlet missions 3 was so reliant on, and actually made something polished and fun out of the idea by focusing on them fully. It’s a pretty clear cause-and-effect evolution.

1:36 Too bad Legend of Zelda stopped expanding on the central mechanics and themes after Skyward Sword, or arguably even Twilight Princess; all we've gotten since are two tedious, boring, frustrating sandbox-style open-world games with all the miserable trappings therein (limited stamina, fragile equipment, "exploration" as the sole focus, lack of map markers to guide players or highlight where side quests and important landmarks are, temperature gauge) with a Legend of Zelda skin applied on top. We haven't gotten proper, sprawling complex dungeons since Skyward Sword. We haven't gotten a wide, varied arsenal of tools mainly found within said proper dungeons since Skyward Sword. We haven't gotten a properly interesting and engaging story since Twilight Princess. We haven't gotten a good 3D overworld, that's compact but still large enough to feel like a proper adventure when crossing, has just enough hidden goodies and secrets to make a once-over after getting more tools, and is memorable, since Twilight Princess. When _Ocarina of Time_ - the first 3D Zelda - manages to have superior dungeons/Temples and more engaging gameplay than the most recent duo, that's when you know the new formula is a FAILURE. It. Does. NOT. WORK. Not for Legend of Zelda.

@@Nobody_Shroom Typically, no, I'm not. The only two open-world games I've ever enjoyed are Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin's Creed Origins, as they avoid practically every pitfall BotW and TotK faceplant into, especially Ghost. Ghost of Tsushima has to be my favourite open-world game, hands-down, as it doesn't have limited stamina, doesn't have breakable weapons, marks areas of interest on the map (with ? icons initially, until you get closer, then it uses specific icons), has fun combat, fun sidequests, fun stealth, and an enjoyable story. So if I were to recommend an open-world game, it'd be Ghost of Tsushima above anything else. As for a Legend of Zelda game with GOOD open-world-esque exploration elements? The Wind Waker HD - the Great Sea uses its comparatively smaller size much more efficiently and effectively, hiding goodies across its grid of distinct islands and reefs, all while having a better combat system and great dungeon design. I think this game could’ve benefited from a crystal hunting planet but instead of crystals, maybe some special weapon that you can only get there

Honestly I put RAC down and never looked back after seeing deadlocked when it came out. Just felt like a rushed game for a cash grab. RAC but no clank, and only a battle arena for gameplay. LIKE BRUH, who else wanted RAC4 not Ratchet the Gladiator? I get it, its half of the other games, but the lack of scenery/exploration is just lame. Arenas were good for getting bolts. THATS IT. Bolts and items. Sure upgrading guns too, but really its just a way more fun way of getting bolts then replaying levels with the most crates. The arena was sick because it helped give rac more of an open world vibe. If i was short on bolts when a new gun came to the vendor i could jet off to the arena. In gladiator, its like oh wait i guess il just keep doing what ive been doing to get that extra 10k i need. I am trapped in an arena. Resulting in the worlds most linear gameplay ever no? If they game woudve been half the price as the othrs on release maybe itd have been okay, but i still probably wouldn't have played it. In my favorite action/adventure games i really like getting from point A to point B. Not just a game where point A is it, and they just bump up difficulty of the arena. I get that arena is just core ratchet combat but does it not feel a bit like this sequel is more of a giant mini-game vs an actual RAC title? Also after watching other rac reviews to decide if i should get a ps5, i decided to instead whip-out my old ps2 slim, that plays rac 1-2-and 3, perfectly, no motion blur (ps3 and4), and bought a hard copy of rac3 (the one i somehow lost). If the new game(s) comes out on pc il buy it, but honestly every console since the 360 hasn't actually improved in any way shape or form, besides getting BIGGER and more EXPENSIVE. No way im buying a ps5 for a soulless remake of a game that was better 20 years ago, and runs perfectly on a console i still have from 15+ years ago. This is why most triple A games today are often garbanzo. 20 years and a dozen rac titles later. I have yet to see anything that resembles RAC4...... Rift aparts game-play might be there, but you might as well change the names of ratchet and clank to hamlet and skank. So at 26 years of age now, crossing my fingers that insomniac might get one right in the next 20 years. Literally so many consecutive disappointments, I gave up hope in a good RAC game ever releasing again a long time ago. How are the FIRST 3 games better that the 10 that came after it... Insomniac needs to understand my kids 10-15 years from now will play rac 1-2 and 3. And the rest of the current franchise can stay 'deadlocked' away for eternity. I have no clue why insomniac look at this game like it was a miss-step. Story wise it was dope. Ratchet was shown what it’s like to become a hero solely for the glory. And he was horrified. Becoming an idol for clout was just not his style. He saw how it corrupted someone like Ace. And he wouldn’t leave everything he’s fought for behind just for the fame. Especially if it sacrificed people and friends along the way.

This is totally off topic, but when I first played this game, Ratchet got zapped by nothing after glitching out of bounds in the very first training section (specifically in a hallway right before you had to do some platforming challenge across hazardous ground). When I somehow glitched though the wall and walked around outside for a bit, and shortly after got zapped, I remembered the cutscene that had just played, saying something to the likes of, "if you venture into any restricted zone, the collar will produce a deadly shock". I assumed at the time that this was what happened, that it was an legitimate feature, and was a means of combating out of bounds glitches, and I silently praised the devs creativity and attention to detail. Of course, I've never been able to reproduce this, so that can't be the case, but that memory has always stuck around ,and it helped the game make a heck of a first impression. I'm curious if anybody else has encountered something like this?

Third best game in the series for me. God I played this game so damn much as a kid. I remember picking this up day 1 at game stop back in 2005. I was so freaking hyped to get home from school I begged my dad for this game hahaha.

The coop is god tier. It's balanced by not allowing the two to use the same weapon, so no double dual raptors lv200 spanming. You can also be the bot who shields, while your partner cranks the nodes, as the chip becomes a weapon, which you can use anywhere. It uses the ten second respawn too, so if both die at the same time, restart the level, otherwise, hunker down and wait

deadlocked is a game i used to play more in the multiplayer than the single player back in 2005-2006 with my friends, i really dont remember why but only in 2020 ive finished the game for the first time in my life. sadly i played the ps3 version last year even with the bad port i really enjoy playing this game again after 14-15 years.

IMO alpha mods are a lot more fun and complex than raritanium. With the latter I feel like XP level ups are basically pointless besides the final, whereas alpha mods have a weighty impact when leveling up and reward me with more customisation.

my only real issue with Deadlocked was the lack of enemy variety, and i guess it felt odd there were no secrets or collectibles when many of the maps had spots that wouldve worked perfectly for hiding something there i will say the game loses a lot when played in co-op because you miss out on Merc and Green's hilarious commentary, shame they never looked back on those two

Interesting to hear about the 4th game problem 🙂 I was thinking about that in a few cases, how many times that a 4th entry actually surpass the 3rd? Regardless of a movie or game *usually the ones that fail is because the developers weren't involved, like wrath of cortex, enter the dragonfly just to name a few 4th entries that crashed and burn* then we have some that does surpass with flying colors *mega man 4, X4, metroid fusion at least to me anyways 🙂* I find the fourth game problem being more interesting that the typical 3rd game and done *it's not that 3 is the magic number, but I would like to see how they can expand in some franchises* well done to you j 🙂 and this may seem like an unrelated question *though it is from insomniac* what are your thoughts on the resistance trilogy? If you've ever played them.

Hey bro, I’m not sure if you’ll see this comment but there’s a few things I’m wondering about. Are you familiar with RetroAchievements? I’ve added this game to my “want to play” and I’m wondering if this is a good completionist game or is it better to just play it casually.

I’m subscribed, I watch and like your videos often…. With that said, I disagree with almost every single point you make. In almost every video. “It might be only combat, but this is one of my favs.” …. So do you dislike the 50-75 percent of the other games that feature a full combat and platforming sections? “You’d think the linearity would get boring, but the gripping story telling makes up for it plenty!” ….. This is one of the weakest stories in the franchise minus the original 3. The other 6 or so from the ps3 era (with the exception of the spin-offs) all have better story beats, higher stakes, better theatrics, etc. “I don’t like the original game and pretend it never happened. And Sly Cooper puts the lombaxs to rest. SLY COOPER IS THE GOATED TRILOGY.” Sly is without a doubt the weakest of the 3 ps2 era mascots and the sales and lack of interest from the fans shows that objectively. Not my opinion, this was everyone’s opinion. Rant over. I still like your videos and support you tons. I just rarely see where you’re cultivating these opinions. Often times you don’t seem like a Ratchet fan. Check out the Golden Bolt and his retrospective videos on the R&C franchise for a decent representation of my feelings on the series. Have a great day man and keep up the hard work!

I actually kinda have one gripe about Deadlocked and it's that you get the weapons too quickly. I already have the Arbiter and I unlocked the ability to purchase it before the Avenger Tournament. I kinda thought the weapons would've been a bit more spread out instead of gaining the ability to purchase them immediately on the next planet.

Yeah I’m sorry, but Deadlocked was the worst of the four PS2 games for me by a country mile. Internet opinion, the series peaked with Going Commando. The weapons are of course a series staple, but the world exploration was something very much present in the first two games. Up Your Arsenal’s exploration aspects were a step down from Going Commando, replacing certain worlds with the mission system instead. And Deadlocked being solely mission-based completely killed half of the franchise formula imo. Additionally, the roster of weapons is pitifully low which just screams of the game being rushed. Not just that, but outside of the bosses, just about every challenge can be completed by just spamming the scorpion flail which definitely gets old after awhile. And the 99 levels for each weapon just feels like a padded filler grind to keep you playing for longer. The 4 weapon levels in Going Commando and 8 in Up Your Arsenal I felt struck a much better balance. I will say at least the Harbinger is fun to use and doesn’t drastically change like the RYNO 3 when max leveled turns into a worse version of the Going Commando Zodiac. I don’t really mind the alpha mods, but the omega mods should’ve been turned into their own unique weapons instead. There’s basically no reason not to use either the shock mod or mini-bomb mod because they’re miles better than the rest. I feel like if we were given the opportunity to explore each world and need to travel to different points in order to activate different missions (can be completed in any order) with checkpoints every so often, then I probably wouldn’t have as much of a negative opinion of the game as I do. And an important note is that I have no nostalgia for this game. The first time I played it was last year and decided to replay all of the Ratchet and Clank games on PS2 to 100% completion. If I had to order the four, I’d say it goes like this: Going Commando > Ratchet 1 = Up Your Arsenal > Deadlocked

I also love this game, as I found it to be a very welcome change-of-pace compared to the platforming aspects of 2 and 3, while also having an interesting and engaging story. It knows what it wants to be, and in my mind it *excels* at that. It's also the perfect length too, having just enough variety and gimmicks whilst not dragging on too long or over-repeating that variety to the point of banality. It's a massive shame Insomniac doesn't think too highly of this gem, though; it's different, sure, but that doesn't mean it's awful. Also, despite that, I do like how Dallas and Juanita weren't forgotten; regardless of the 2016 reboot's quality, it did feature these two, which was honestly surprising. I guess Deadlocked hasn't been totally left in the past, which is good; I just hope that if a R&C remake series is done, that Deadlocked is also included in that, as it definitely deserves to be.

I remember this being my least favorite on playstation, because the area design, setting, plot, and character development. Gameplay was great, they kinda made the gun system worse. I remember i found 1 mod that statistically was the highest dps. Put it on everything. And that was it for progress even on NG+ . Which in prior games was the strongest part . But nope. All down hill from here .

I just got a PS3 so I could play my old PS3 games, including the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. I also just bought Ratchet: Deadlocked and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time to play the ones I never had. (I might buy Quest for Booty and Full Frontal Assault, I'm not sure, but I will buy Into the Nexus).

I see Ratchet Deadlocked as the brother brawler game to Up Your Arsenal as a solidly good, straightforward game. It sacrificed exploration for online play which should have been left to Up Your Arsenal as fleshed out and extrapolated as a proper Gladiator game rather than waffle between Gladiator and Classic game.

8:35 Which is why the game should either be a platformer, or a third person shooter, and deadlocked proves that Ratchet can absolutely be a third person shooter and still kick ass. I cant stand that the second and third games pretend they are platformers, its just a wishy washy not taking a side thing thats the worst of both worlds 8:45 I enjoy that, and i also enjoy good third person shooters, my issue is with third person shooters that pretend to be what they are not. Ok. Ratchet 2 and 3 are great games and i enjoy them a lot, they are just not as good as either deadlocked, or the first game. The first game excels in everything but combat, and deadlocked only really has combat, and its amazing at it. As i said, 2 and 3 are just weaker at doing both.
