28:47 the tau battle suit wouldn't want to use his knife, it's probably meant to be a bonding knife, which is a symbol of a tau's commitment to his comrades carried into battle to rais moral, and isn't actually meant for use in combat.
The tau with the knife on it's chest. I think that's a ritual tau knife. The tau all cut themselves with the blade, swearing their honour in blood. The knife is then carried by the commander. ... I could be wrong though...
That ork titan was fucking epic! Looks like the odin from starcraft 2. I think posing is one of the hardest things to get right but adds so much character and dynamism if done correctly (e.g. something heavy should FEEL heavy, even when in motion).
I've mentioned it on the discord stream before, but my windows 10 resets all mic sound settings at random, often during videos. This means that I end up with bizarre audio and end up having to make-do with what audio I get.
I actually really like the Apocalypse Missile Launcher Baneblade; while just sticking the titan-mount onto the tank isn't right, it's definitely something that could be done well with minimal conversion work.

This is an interesting video, thought I disagree on some models, because of some reasons, with others I understand your "disagreement" to them. Like the Cybot at the 30 minutes with the 4 big guns on top of it. I think its awesome, you cant use it in the game, but it looks really awesome. And the following ork whatever giant weaponplatform, its just a beauty to the eye, until I realized you were right about the ork habit of "just stick it on". The amount of weapons is right, the proportions of the weapons are orkish right, but the way they are arranged is off. What I disagree with are some of the landraider conversions and the space wolf tactical warsuit. Yes double top turrets are reserved for super heavy tanks, not the land raider, but those little "extras" are more fitting into the lore/fluff of the respected armies. Like a dreadnought over and over with seals and trophies and stuff, its just the way the people are in 40k. But thanks for giving some thoughts on what a conversion/kitbash should have worked into.
everything is subjective in different ways. i like to use 1/35 scale ww2 tanks and artillery with added 40k parts, because i like these tanks as well as the W40k universe. i see it as an hommage. but other people may not like it at all and that is fine by me. don,t really care if people burn my models down, but the critiques have to be at least somewhat constructive otherwise i have to ignore it. there are other people who actually do like it so who is right anyways? like to use all sorts of parts, from toys, diy material and whatever else i can think off. so many different people with so many different opinions, i can agree on most of what you say macca. it needs some continuety, look good sizewise, not entirely sure at all times about not daring to combine angular and curvatious parts. sometimes that works just as well. great vid as always.

15:47 these 2 consecutive guns are definitely meant to at least emulate the looks of the combi disintegrator gun from the Imperial Space Marine, hence the out-of-place bayonets. Interesting that there were multiple sniper disintegrator conversions going around.
So, Weird lore thing which makes no sense but i guess is the case, the parts that you refered to as "Cells" at the 17:00 minute mark, and are often confused as exhausts for the backpack generator, are actually meant to be thrusters. One of the reasons the Anvillus Pattern Power pack came to be is because the Legions needed a pack that had more powerful, and finer rotation thrusters for Zone-Mortalis Open-Void engagements. Weird, I know, and I think we re all better off thinking they are just exhaust ports.

Converting and modeling has always been one of my favorite parts of the hobby, and I learned some things particularly about posing that I just couldn't put my finger on before thanks to this video. This was awesome! I think we all would like to see fewer cringey models, and I think the lessonss and the specific categories of things that need to be correct that you showed in this video are gonna really help a lot of people step up the modeling game! the sculpt at 15:11 the right arm is an actually a chaos terminator arm, the stormbolter was probably chopped off. it might be small because new modells since dark imperium have been scaled up and arm is from the previous terminator (2005?) kit
only one i'll disagree on is the tank at 11 mins ish, its not the size of the rocket launcher, its the attatchment between that and the tank - if they'd used as much of the bit at the back to attatch it, it wouldnt look as bad - it looks like firing it would rip it off
17:05 That knight is awesome imo. It pushes the proportions a bit, but I think not enough to be ridiciolous for chaos. To me it looks as if it was a mutated machine, something like Charger from Left 4 Dead. Tentacles help this feel a lot imo.
you say that on a good convertion, you can't have parts that have a total different look. I depends! I am currently making a gue'vesa (tau humqn helper) titan knight, like if a titan crew joined the T'au and were allowed to upgrade some of the titqn's system. Of course the tau look is different from imperial look, but there is a justification.
Yeah but then you have to wich tau pieces could acctualy integrate into it canonicaly and IRL cause you cant just stick a tau weapon on it and say it works there has to be a reason it works like whats powering it? How is it connected tp it? Do you see what i mean?
I remember a conversion from an armies on parade it was like at least 3 space marine sergeants who were holding spears that looked like Magnus the red should be holding them and it some how won silver.🤔
The first one is honestly not too bad. A person called michaelcthulhu here on youtube has made swords as tall as he is and he can (somewhat) swing them. A space marine is stronger than a normal human and so a sword that large and with the hilt he put on it would be perfectly reasonable.
if you're talking about the one at 15:35 I don't think it actually looks that bad. Sure the gun is oversized but it's a sniper in the 40k universe it's allowed to be long, and it still manages to be thin enough to not be silly. What lets the model down however is the posing, he looks like hes about to fall over
Ok, so looking at some of your stuff, I have to concede, a lot of it is pretty good. However, in my opinion you are at times guilty of some of the crimes you have mentioned on this video. For example: The Mortis Dreadnoughts in your Thousand Sons army; These are painted to a good standard and the conversions are very nicely executed, but, I think they are conceptually very poor. The venerable dreadnought model is quite flawed to start with in my opinion and in my mind doesn't quite fit with the Thousand Sons aesthetic (I am aware this is not a flaw in the conversion as this would be a problem regardless of the work done on the model). In addition, the missile launchers are too large for the model, making an already unbalanced miniature look even more top heavy. There is also a lack of visual continuity between the curved and elegant missile launchers and the rest of the model which is very boxy and sharp edged. It is very clear that in terms of modelling and painting, you are very competent. However, I thing this conversion was never going to look right regardless of how much effort was put in.
Guilty as charged. I often commit many 'crimes against the hobby' often due to the rule of cool or out of my own selfish desires. I freely admit this, and that's part of why it would be so very wrong of me to; a) make points about other miniatures and never show my own b) not listen to what people have to say regarding the matter c) think I'm above these mistakes, which I'm not There are exceptions, like the Dreadnoughts which look far better in person than in images, something many people have remarked on when they've handled them. It doesn't really matter, at the end of the day people are more than welcome to dislike my work, after all, it would be very boring if everyone only ever agreed with me!
That is a very mature response to what could be seen as simple trolling, Clearly you are able to take criticism well which I personally see as a commendable trait. This leads me to my major problem with this video in so far as there are a lot of people out there who do not take this level of criticism as well as you or I. Personally, when I was in school I was very severely bullied, in many ways one of the few places I felt welcomed and accepted was my local GW. I was able to go in there on a Saturday afternoon and completely open up and express myself in ways I would not be able to at school. I still feel that the vast majority of my best friends are people I have met either directly or indirectly through Warhammer. Whatever you think of the miniatures you have presented in this video, people like you or me have put hours of effort into excitedly building them. With very few exceptions, these people have posted these photos online because they are proud of them. While they are indeed asking for constructive advice on how to improve on their work, they have still taken a concept, gone out and bought a miniature/a few miniatures and bought that concept to fruition. If, 15 years ago I had seen a something like this, where someone has taken an image of something I have done and is using it as an example of "a bad conversion", I would have found it very upsetting and it may very well have driven me away from the hobby! Honestly, I think the intention of this video is a noble one, but I think you executed it quite poorly. If you had perhaps asked people to submit models of their own which they freely admit are poorly converted, or you yourself had delved into the stuff from early in your hobby career (god knows I could make a much longer video than this using just things I made 10-15 years ago). As a final point, although it does relate to one I made earlier. Your channel has now reached close to 5000 subscribers (congratulations on that, it is a big achievement) and with your tendency to produce content aimed at beginners, new players will find you. Considering your modelling and painting work is very competent, there is a good chance these new players will see you as something of a role model and something to aspire to. I don't think you should be using that amazing platform to present so much negativity. I'm sure the last thing any of us want is to drive away anyone who could otherwise be a lifelong hobbyist, as I am and as I'm sure you are. Please take this as constructive rather than just a simple attack. You have clearly put a lot of work into this and I would hate to see that go to waste.

I wanted to start a Heresy Era Blood Angels and was thinking about using AoS Celestant Prime as a base for converting Sanguinius. Give him fantasy pegasus/eagle/phoenix wings. Some bling from from BA sprues(blood drops etc). Chaos termies pauldrons(for that flared edges, of course remove all chaos things...) i dont really wanna commit to it without being 100% sure. What are your thoughts?
Your idea sounds a bit small in my head. I would convert a primarch if it were me. Probably an astorath style pose. Fulgrim seems like a great base for the model.
you call this "a subjective look" but in reality i think your just saying that as an excuse to shit all over other peoples work that you don't like. modeling, converting, and sculpting are all forms of artistic expression. you can not do it wrong. the only way a conversion would be bad is if it didn't turn out the way the person who made it wanted it to. all of these are fine.
It seems like you're treating your opinion as standard, then trying to tell people that it's just your opinion and they can't get mad. It's the use of " You *can't*" that irks me. Putting subjective in the title and saying that it's just your opinion in the beginning of the video doesn't immediately shield you from criticism.

He stated that it's subjective and even gave you a disclaimer so he's in the clear here. I don't know why you would assume, that he's trying to shield himself from criticism. I'm sure people would love to hear about your guidelines for what makes a competent conversion.
I actually don't mind the giant sword on the Grey Knight Brother Captain. Hear me out on this one. So, there's a type of Japanese Sword called a Zanbato, which is either an excessively long tachi-style sword (same basic design as a Katana) or sometimes just a slab of sharpened metal, big enough to cleave through a horse AND its rider in one swing but too unwieldy to use against an opponent on foot. Considering the size of most Greater Daemons, a weapon that large actually makes sense. As for leverage issues, keep in mind a suit of Terminator armor is a powered exoskeleton that weighs over a ton, whereas a weapon that size might weigh a few hundred pounds at most (for the record, a steel replica of the Buster Sword from FF7 weighs about 80lbs). So there's not really a practicality issue here. The Brother Captain is just arming himself for big game. As for the general proportion argument, while I'd generally agree, if there's a viable explanation for something like that I don't think it should matter as much. It's not like you're sticking Devilfish thrusters on an XV8.

FW is like an avalanche(right now), and there is no telling when it stops if it stops and what it takes with it. its a sad thing because FW was the company that added special stuff where GW let the special stuff go. and now it ends up being the same damn thing GW is doing, only selling the bestsellers. and the special units are limited from now on i guess...
I just completely disagree when it comes to how much lore matters. I don't think it should be a major sticking point when it comes to model conversions because it's not like the universe of 40k is a "complete work". They're constantly introducing new stuff, retconning existing stuff and vast majority of the galaxy isn't even explored, let alone the universe. If all of your conversions work with everything that's established already and you don't have to basically invent bit of fanfic around your creations then that's just a bit unimaginative.
Ok, after watching more of this, a lot of these are just extreme nitpicks. In fact, with some of these I think you're just bitching about people doing things a bit differently from your particular vision of 40k. It's one thing to say you don't like something, but the way you've formatted this video you're flat-out telling people "don't do this" with these things.
