Theory: INTPs are also more interested in personality theory than others because it is a theory that can be used to understand the world. How wonderful is that everyone can be broken up into these 16 personality types. You can use these templates to help navigate your communication and understand social dynamics. For example I have found that people who score super high in openness dominate in academia while people who score higher on the dark triad tend to CIA and FBI jobs. This may sound redundant and axiomatic but these personality theories give a strong insight into the functioning of society and more importantly how to navigate through other personalities. They also seem to be the most flattering to INTPs. Everyone likes to hear that they are smart. I have also noticed that INTPs make a point of being unique, their idea or understanding is rewarded for being a bit divergent from the vox populi. It could be seeing through the tosh of a ruling ideology or having an ah ha moment when it comes to the P vs NP problem.
@RutabegaNG
@RutabegaNG 4 года назад
You've reminded me of all the vocabulary I've lost over the years, attempting to be "understood," and a "functioning member of society." Gradually rebuilding, thankfully; I've missed my words. As for your comment, I would have to concur; I have indeed used it as a baseline to understand the world around me. Where I find it problematic is with those who won't look beyond those basic definitions.

@@ineedhelp8573 No, you just find your comfort zone gravitates towards doing less and Si can easily overrun Ti in unhealthy or immature INTP, which is almost all of us in this society which favours ExxJ AND where Fe, Te, Si, Se, Ne, Ni, Fi, Ti is the preferred order of function use. Ti users are the most disruptive to this while being authentic. So Ti users suppress their Ti and try to appear like an introverted tertiary using ESFJ (they use their Si more than Fe and use Ne a lot). But people see the Fe deficit and don't like that. INTPs generally don't value using their Fe, or Fe users, but still want to be accepted and useful to groups and get upset when they are rejected or don't feel themselves to fit in So INTPs that are forced to be around groups and try to fit in end up overusing Si and become incredibly comfort and routine oriented while feeling burned out and like their life choices aren't logical. Unfortunately that ends up translating to their alone life too. And then, worse, they get so sick of the social group struggle they then feel uncomfortable, withdraw, repress their insecure Fe and sit in an Si-Ti loop doing nothing but thinking, and deciding anything hard or uncomfortable doesn't logically make sense to do because they know it will make them stressed

I agree, I don't think INTPs are necessarily the "smartest". We're typically interested in academic or complex things, and we're basically built for understanding those things, but these things just happen to be associated with the common idea of what intelligence is. Intelligence has a lot of factors, and there are multiple forms of intelligence. INTPs are great at understanding systems, but quite bad about being emotionally tactful and tend to be unaware of their surroundings. Plus, sometimes they can feel totally inept at doing day-to-day tasks, and feel useless because they're only skilled at doing more abstract things. Edit: grammar

I am intp. Speaking of Ti subjectivity, I am open to new ideas and will respect whatever people think, as long as they have some kind of backing for it. When I encounter other intps or people with opinions, I often try to merge our two systems, by showing them elements in mine and trying to learn about elements in theirs. If I find a flaw, I point it out. If they find a flaw, I ponder until it makes sense again and thank them. I am open to new ideas, but I get very upset when other people aren’t.

Try studying her personality type! Figure out how you can express to her your ideas and questions in a language she can understand. If she is an F type, which she seems to be, remember to tend to her emotional needs. F types might find it very frustrating to feel attacked by questions doubting their ideas. Rewind and reword your questions to account for how she perceives your words. It may be difficult, especially for an INTP, but make an effort (even if it’s a failed effort) to understand her emotional needs. Seeing the effort, as tacky as it may be, is usually enough for an F type to feel cared for and understood. In the same respect, she should study your personality type and understand why you ask questions the way you do. She should account for the fact that her INTP isn’t as emotionally mature as her and may struggle to communicate in regards to emotions, and is simply speaking through a filter of pure logic and reasoning.

OMG I can't stand people who aren't able to take the heat of a debate! They confuse genuine questions with defiance of trying to discredit them... In many ways this isn't a world built for our kind 😂

But the more I learn about the INTP the more I see myself in them, especially based on the experiences of other INTPs, I'd like to believe that in the end of the the day we are individuals and each person is different than the other, and although we may fonction with a similar system, we each have our own way of using those fonctions depending on the situations we've been through, lets also keep in mind that our own experiences shaped us in different ways, and that maturity also plays a big role in all this. Our background, social norms and so on, makes us all different despite our similarities.

I’d argue, as an INTP, that we are in fact incredibly emotional. The difference is that we can set how we feel aside for what we think, coupled with a tendency to repress our negative emotions, we can appear emotionless to people we aren’t comfortable expressing ourselves around. A friend of mine told me that she thought I didn’t like her at first, when my feelings were actually closer to positive indifference. I think as a type we just tend towards not always knowing what to do with feelings since we can see when we shouldn’t act on them but that can lead to almost never acting on emotions even when appropriate. Can confirm, I have many feels. After all, we strive to understand things, and empathy is really just the understanding of people, so we can be good at it if awkward in practice.

Being an INTP I've noticed that I always have the urge to learn how things function. Instead of reading fictional books I read dictionaries and tech manuals. I'm also always analyizing people by what they say and do. I even try to interpret my dreams by looking them up online to see what they mean. Although I'm not good at math, I am good at analyizing information and compiling it all into one easy to read "file". In fact I wrote a whole training manual to train new workers at my job. My thirst for knowledge never ends. What you said in your video pretty much sums it up.

Bro, I’m sorta that opposite in a way. I love learning about things, don’t get me wrong (science, psychology, and philosophy are my children) but I tend to exclusively read fiction. It’s my escape from this world, no more school, socializing, or taxes. Just me, words, and a story. It’s rather therapeutic actually, though I can totally see why you would take interest in documentaries and manuals. How you described your way of analyzing is accurate to me though. The only difference is that it seems like you may be actively focusing on it, while I do it more passively and just sorta acknowledge behaviors and potential information that may be useful later. It’s pretty neat to see how other think, though. I could go on and on, so I’ll just stop here ‘cause you probably didn’t want to read all of this anyway, haha. If you did, thanks, annnnnd hope your journey in the ‘how’ of functionality treats you well :)

I'm an INTP working R&D in computer science (see my channel). Most of what you said is true, except it's not awesome. It's sad and lonely. More you try to understand stuff, more you see how the world sucks and how it's harder and harder to find solutions because of the human/society factor (well it's just a personal opinion based on observation and I'm a pessimist so maybe I'm completely wrong...). My point is, being INTP only leads to sadness. I'm considered pretty smart by the standard definition of intelligence and by the people who know me. Most of the time, when I take a step back and look and my life I see all the problems my intelligence creates. I wish I was dumb, I could be so happy. And that's was just me about life in general, I think it's worst in social situations. In social situations people who don't know me tend to think I'm haughty. I remember one time I was at a party with a friend and he introduced his girlfriend to me. At the end of the night, "Why Fy hates me?" she asked him. The thing is, I did not hate her at all, on the opposite, I was quite fond of her. Maybe it is just me but I'm a very very logical person and I can't stop myself from correcting people when they're making logical mistakes or when they just lack consistency. It does not matter who's right or wrong (it does, but anyway...) if the base of your argument is based on a logical fallacy I can't take what you're saying seriously. I can try to understand why you believe an error to be true but if I take time to show you and still you choose to not see... man it drives me nuts sometimes. And it's because I act this way that most people struggle with me. I guess most of what I said sounds incredibly pretentious and it is but this is just the way I see things. You could argue that my faith in logic is just that: faith but I would have a hard time taking you seriously.

I usually roll my eyes when I see these kinds of videos about INTPs, but I definitely think you hit the nail in the head when you point out that being an INTP doesn’t automatically mean you’re the smartest person in a room. As one myself I’m constantly fascinated by things I can learn from other people that I think are smarter than me, I think we’re all more knowledgeable than someone else in some areas and deficient in others. So I do agree that the type strengths just sort of guide your thought process and interactions with the world, but don’t completely define you or your innate abilities. Thanks for posting this! Take care!

The hardest thing for me to get people to understand about my worldview is that I don't judge anyone's feelings/perspectives/actions as being inherently good or bad. We all have flaws, we all make false steps. What I find intolerable is dishonesty, especially the internal dishonesty that prevents people from reflecting on their mistakes and striving to evolve. Conversely, I have the most respect for people who have fucked up and learned from it.

As others have said, there's a stronger correlation between having a high IQ and being an INTP than there is with any other personality type, so as a group, INTPs are smart, though it's possible for any individual INTP to have a low IQ or an individual person with a different personality type to have an IQ that is either higher than the average INTP IQ, or that of an individual INTP. So you can't just assume that because one person is an INTP and the other person is not an INTP that the INTP will be more intelligent, but the chances of that happening are statistically likely.

As an INTP I feel I know more than most of my peers purely because I spend 10X as long building my theory of everything and most people spend time with small talk. It's not about being more intelligent, its about being more focused. Not hyper-focused on one thing, but building an idea of everything so I can more easily figure out other things and sort of split test ideas against each other.

I really like that you've mentioned that INTP is not necessarily the most intelligent personality type. Being an INTP I agree 100% with this statement. I'm a INTP and I always feel like expressing myself is quite complicated. In my brain it's like a giant cloud of ideas and thoughts that move frenetically in every direction. So when I speak I talk about something, which make me think of something else which itself will bring to an other thing. I digress and the main subject become more and more far away. I think if anyone want to talk with an INTP it will be easier by writing. Give your INTP the time to think about your question/subject and structure an argument (it's also a good exercise for your INTP since it will force it to structure a cloud of ideas).

Usually I don’t care but I’m trying to branch out more socially lately so I don’t get too weird being alone and talking to myself all the time so it’s nice to know that as an extroverted type they’ll take me out to do things or reach out to me to get me to open up when I normally wouldn’t because I don’t have the emotional processing power that they do. 🙃

After watching about a dozen other videos on MBTI, I have to say, I really like the way you broke down the stack into how each was expressed. That's something I have yet to come across and it gives even more meaning and clarification to my understanding of MBTI; so thanks for that. You basically summed me up, except for the math part; I passed, that is all. I think it's safe to say, I'm an INTP but I haven't taken the test. I would like to point out, while in the military, I had to get way out of my comfort zone and acquired skills to at least act like I wasn't an INTP. These skills ranged from speaking in front of large groups, to having a conversation about sports, to biting your tongue, especially when you're right (risk management). I knew very quickly the military was not for me, but I'm the better for it and don't regret it despite all the BS it came with. Point is, to other INTPers, push yourself out of your comfort zone (or out of the house), you'll learn, grow and be better for it.

I never gave much stock in personality profiling after all the different ones i've done over the years, they felt like how a horoscope could apply to anyone and some will be correct, some won't. I tried this whole 16 personalities thing a few months ago, I got INTP and it was literally like reading about myself, one thing it said is that it will feel strange being understood and I couldn't agree more. This video again was pretty much nail on the head. I found the bit about intelligence interesting, because I've discounted it even as a concept for years, some people are better at different things than others; I'm better at strategy gaming than some because I've done it most my life, I'm pretty bad at social gatherings because they aren't my thing. One interesting thing about INTP is I always find I have to go back and correct something I've typed, because my brain rushed ahead and forgot to type out some words.

My two best friends are INTPs (a correlation?!), and they're just literally the best (even before I got to know them well, I kinda had this feeling that we're connected in some ways). Just wanna give you some of my delightful experiences I had. Every time we're together, we discuss the hell out of our never-ending ideas regarding Physics, Math, Psychology (actually one of them introduced me to Jung's ideas), Literature, Philosophy, Art,... (you name it!), for hours. My take is always 'holistic' while theirs are often 'reductionistic' and this is where we usually clash at first but then it leads to interesting syntheses in the end, and always give me a mindgasm! :) They're well-balanced, limitlessly caring, emotionally mature (way more than me in a way that I always confide in them), usually looking for new stuff to eat/drink/... (I've expanded my narrow list of 'what to have', thanks to them), into comics/manga and just as you mentioned, they're into IQ stuff, you know :) But sometimes they just seem can't/don't wanna see beyond their logical systems (i.e. the multiple equally-valued 'locally' options/solutions for a given case), and that's when I burst off yelling "I know what's a logical option/solution, I've already examined them all, but that won't work and why can't you see the bigger picture/'globally' here?!" kinda stuff, so when I connect the dots "out of box"-ly, they begin to grasp excellently what I mean => a true happy ending! Now if all the INTPs (> 5 sigma) are like them, I can safely say that they're the "most awesomest type ever"! :)

Congratulations, we accepted to do it because we felt you are entering into the INTP's comfort circle. Disclaimer: Never try to open up an idea when there are 2 INTP's in the room. They will either roast you or roast each other. (Get a popcorn if the latter happens,l. It'll be fun. :D)

Great video! as an INTP we tend to overanalyze ourselves and the things that we can perfect so at least in my case I tend to left aside the good parts of being an INTP so your video it's a nice reminder of that, and also is interesting coming from another MBTI type, so I appreciate it, thanks ;D

Did you phrase it as: You can make more money if you do xyz or you can improve the product? If you talk money, people will listen, if you talk about product, people will usually take it personally, as a reflection on their adequacy.

It took me many years, but I can truly say that I love being an INTP. When I first took the MBTI it seemed like astrology; but once they gave the explanations it was the first time I felt that I understood who I was and how other people reacted to me. It takes a lot of study and experience to have a deep understanding but it is very empowering, and makes life fun because it gives you a tool to know how you can do things better.

I have a difficult time staying focused and engaged in my current project. Details make me nervous. Which is hilarious being that I'm an artist that works on miniatures.

Thank you for the ego-boost :) You're spot on, but I need to re-watch the video a few times to fully analyse it (unfortunately, not sure I have the time for that). First time for me to hear about the wanting to talk about feelings part, and the part about wanting people to feel good, but that's true. People find it weird at my corporate job whenever I try to make things happen through goodwill and through maintaining a positive atmosphere (even though my bluntness often has the opposite effect) rather than by displaying aggressiveness and by playing office politics and power games... However, I am not sure everybody find the type of conversations you mentioned as fascinating as you do (I'm not the best, socially, even though I like people -- in controlled doses, of course, since I am an introvert). But I would definitely enjoy having analytical/logical breakdown convos with you, for sure (especially that I don't get to have the often enough). It would have to be online or something, since we live on different continents (assuming you're in the US).

I agree about how they help others calmly break down logic. I notice for those that consciously interact using value-driven functions, the INTP can help them discover bias and the like.

I'm an intp and to be honest you pretty much nailed it on the head , it is very tiring being an intp , I'm constantly analysing everything around me , I have a so called 'IQ of 128 " dont I believe I'm smarter than anyone , but I do see failings in almost everything and everyone, and what's more frustrating is they wont take advice and most of the time they just get pissed off , it's as if I can predict the outcomes of situations before they've even happened ??

I know I’m late, but I’m an INTP and this video really stroked my ego for one thing. You very accurately described the INTP’s relationship with their cognitive functions and how these functions affect the way the INTP works. A lot of times, it’s difficult to understand how the cognitive functions of each personality apply, but you definitely nailed it in this video, especially the INTP’s Fe function. I’m sure even the INTP often struggles to understand their own inferior function (as most types would). I know I personally have to make an extra effort in order to tend to the emotional needs of others (and, lets be honest, myself). Rather than naturally responding to emotions, I have to actively analyze people and understand how I can emotionally support them. Having little emotional maturity myself, I find it very fascinating to try to understand how I can change my own behaviors to account for others’ emotions. I think it’s this respect for others’ emotions, and the attempt at creating a solution that prioritizes the feelings of others that shows in the INTP’s Fe function. It’s something that the INTP should be mindful of and make an effort to account for. It may not come naturally to us, but when an INTP can figure out how to adjust their own way of thinking to account for their fellow human’s feelings, they may find a brand new world in which their connections with others aids their inner analyzing. And though it may be difficult for me many times, I find it very fascinating to study how people respond emotionally and be mindful of how I interact with others in regards to these emotions.

INTP here. I have learned to simply say happy Monday, happy Tuesday etc. when someone forces themselves onto me by saying good morning or hello or something trivial like that. They nearly always repeat my happy Monday, happy Tuesday and somehow believe that I’m OK with them interrupting my stream of thoughts, then they believe I’m social or socialized or domesticated and let me return to my thinking before I lose track of.... .......damn !
