What Makes Stop Motion So Creepy? | Traven Talks

Stop Motion is simultaneously one of the most spectacular and, most, terrifying, forms of animation.
I’m not the first to notice that Stop Motion can be kinda creepy. In fact, many creators working with it seemed to have realized this a while ago, given the amount of dark or horror themed films and shorts that go out of their way to exploit this aspect of the medium rather than shy away from it. There’s just something about the movements that seems so mechanical. Something about the textures that makes your skin crawl. It's all so weird, so eerie, so uncanny.
And this Halloween season, I want to talk about what I think makes this tactile trade so creepy for so many.

A couple of notes: - I'd like to thank ZyanXynx (Infinite Thoughts) for helping me spruce up the script for this video, and to shout him out, he makes some pretty cool stuff: ru-vid.com/show-UCSAX39WESWgIxFSjktezELg - I decided to test out RU-vid Premieres with this video, and, ultimately, as you can probably see me and others discuss in the live chat replay, it seems like a . . . meh feature, is really the only way to describe it. Sure, it might have the potential to boost watch time so that vids can have a chance to be recommended more cuz "the algorithm", and help with community engagement, and etc, but really it seems like more of a hassle than it's worth, given that a lot of backend stuff can't be set up until AFTER the premiere ends, the annoyance of getting notifications for videos you can't watch, etc etc. I think there might still be a useful way to use it, but, still, seems kinda pointless. No offence, youtube. TLDR; Probably won't be doing this again, lol

I have a fear (either rational or irrational idk the difference) of stop motion animations, they’re always so creepy and eerie to a certain extent, but that’s the same reason why I’m completely obsessed with it

Glad to see you back my dude! This was an unsettling delight. The uncanny valley is so fascinating, but I never thought about it in the context of stop-motion. Also I gotta say I disagree about Gromit, I still think he's pretty adorable xD

Thanks man, glad you liked it! It was a pretty fun vid to make, especially considering how long I've had this general idea sitting in the back of my mind, it was starting to drive me mad, lol And, oh dear, a disagreement . . . guess the only way to settle this is with a battle to death in the Grand Sand Pit. I'll see you at dusk, good sir :P Srsly tho, maybe it's just me but there's something about Gromit that seems ever so slightly off and its unsettling, and I'm still not sure what it is xP

The "strobing" effect of stop motion which happens because there is no blurring of the moving objects in the frame to frame photography as occurrs in actual live action photography is an effect and aspect of stop motion I have always loved and found fascinating. Un fortunately (for me) a lot of modern stop motion has advanced to the point where it is just about indistinguishable from cgi and although amazing loses much of it's inherent rough/primitive charm.

I screamed when I saw a disturbing Claymation PSA thumbnail in my homepage. It was about child abuse. I couldn't tell at first weather the stuffed animal was a bear or dog or a mouse. It was acually supposed to be a stuffed bear, and I couldn't even tell at first. Since then, I have reported it because of the disturbing animation. I cried myself to sleep that night when I first encountered the thumbnail. I was even more scared when I played it. The animation made no sense with the audio. What kind of sick person would put up an old maybe 90's 2000's PSA that terrifying?

I really LOVE studio Laika. My favourite of their movies still is Coraline. I really wanted to watch Kubo when it was in cinemas but apparently the cinema where I live decided that noone wanted to watch it so only had one screening and that was at midnight on a school day... Still haven't watched it since but it looks amazing.

Yeah, Laika's great, and Coraline is absolutely fantastic. And man, that sucks! Though, if you have netflix, I think Kubo is actually on there (though, that said, it might depend on the region and all that jazz, but still).

I was thinking about the older, Harryhausen style stuff. That really freaks me out. The RoboCop 2 scene with the malfunctioning prototype robots and the push it video by Static-X are both good examples of that style of old, jittery, wiry, and creepy Stop Motion, where everything feels like it has no weight or too much weight.

Stop-Motion is my favorite type of animation. pretty much all my favorite movies are Stop-Motion, with my absolute favorite being Coraline. it can be both uncanny and whimsical, so many Stop-Motion films are extremely creative, and you can always tell how much effort goes into everything. any time i watch Stop-Motion, i'm always amazed over everything, like hair physics or the way clothes wrinkle, or how water is animated, the amount of details on everything, like frayed threads on clothes or how when a character walks on gravel, the gravel moves with the character's feet, just things that may seem little but took so much thought and time to get right.

I think Wallace and Gromit are terrifying i watched it the first time when i was 3. I hate how stopmotion/claymotion characters look and move. Except for the nightmare before christmas. I were just chilling in the comments because i did'nt wanna get scared. I thought this stopmotion is scary thing only were for me because my friends and family could watch it without problem. Ah nvm. Great video!

It makes me happy to see you are still making videos pal. Also happy you seem to have gotten "better" after your well deserved, and probably needed break. As these mental issues normally can be quite complicated. So hope you have actually figured something out on that end, for your own sake :P. Must honestly say i haven't taken much interest in the type of content you have been creating since, well. Since you changed your name really xD. But with what i see here, i might just start doing so again. Just wanted to stop by and see how you we're doing to be honest, and tell you even thou i haven't exactly been a regular for a while now, you still have my support, however much that means to you. But as always(-ish), keep yourself going, do what you feel like, and try and stay positive. And of course, i guess i will have to follow this old "tradition" of mine and put my name at the bottom of my comment aswell. ~dontmind

Wallace and Gromit don't bother me because they're not as realistic and they're clearly made out of clay. Plus it helps they're charming, likeable characters Coraline lacked the robotic movement that made older stop motion creepy.

@@TravenTalks Yea, I put it on my watch-list on Netflix. Will watch it probably this week, I have watched some videos of the foreshadowing which it contains and it seemed like a must see one. Still kinda forgot to watch it and even though I saw plenty of movies during my childhood, this one I'm not too sure I saw. The video just reminded me, and probably this was recommended to me since like 1 month ago I watched those Coraline clips and videos without trying to give myself too many spoilers.

Since i'm an painter and 3d modeler i start thinking for new development on my skils. I love puppets and Stop Motion animation. In one hand it's little late for me to start learning completely new skill such like this - make puppets and animated them - but in to another hand never is too late. I think i really like to do such animacion, but i don't know from where i can start learning. I don''t know course, or university for how to make puppet, animatronic and so one. if someone knows for such school? Can someone help with information? i really will appreciate!

*I believe the premise that stop-motion is inherently creepy is flawed.* No offense, but this video is the equivalent of saying CGI is inherently creepy and using “The Polar Express” as your example. There’s a big difference between well done stop-motion and poorly done stop-motion, just like any form of animation. Early stop-motion was always creepy because it was so hard to do. But technology has advanced since then. Studio Laika is the best in the business and their newest movie, “Missing Link” has the most appealing stop-motion I’ve seen. Nothing creepy about it.
