Dude... who even are you lol. Been watching a TON OF VIDS and yours are exactly what I need. The 30 sec vids plus this one. Killer. Put out more. Subs and likes from me all day.
You're welcome, my dude! I'm glad it helps you. I have a website where I go into detail about the screaming processes and how to do them. Give it a read (and listen). It's www.singandscream.com
@@SINGANDSCREAM hey man, I think I’m pretty close to getting it! But I feel like I have to push way to much air out to get it to work. How much “breathy-ness” should it take? Also any tips for pronouncing stuff would be great. Thanks bro your videos rock
@@garettmckelvie4304 the amount of air you need should be in between raising your voice and talking. If it is overall too breathy and sounds more like regular breath and not like a scream then you are most likely not doing the breathiness correctly. I have a big tutorial on fry screams on my website where I go into detail about every little step. Give that a try: singandscream.com
Been doing vocals on my own time for 4 years now, got frys and what not down but your tutorial are helping me find better range in my vocals, thanks man! Got a new subscriber!
There’s not a singular video that can explain “how to use diaphragm” better than this. Without even saying “use your diaphragm” once. Seriously good stuff thank you man just helped me learn how to project my lows soooo much better
I rarely comment but I just have to thank you. This is the video that made me get the vocal fry technique down and I can't describe how happy I am. I've been practicing on and off for years but it finally happened. So grateful this was made and I hope you come back in the future
Man, this is fantastic. I've been casually trying to learn how to scream for years, but never wanted to push too hard for fear of having the wrong technique. You've managed to, like to other, basically explain that I've been doing it right, I just need to push a bit more and practice. Thanks so much! Hearing the difference between the fry scream and vocal fry is what did it for me I think.
W H A T !! dude I was just about to give up after 8 months of trying, FINALLY a simple and so effective way to show how it's done oh my shit... thank you so much, looking forward for any new lessons, subbed!!!🖤🖤
Dude thank you so much, been stuck on fry sound for few weeks not being able to scream. I watched tons of tutorials an all did not tell me how to go in to the scream. Was about to loose hope and I decided to check out last video which is this. I can scream now, thank you, you disserve more subscribers
Holy cow for like a month ive been scouring youtube and been confused and gotten nowhere but your explanation i got the basic feel within a few seconds not down but now I know what to practice and how it feels thanks
Thanks man, that compression was what was missing for me. After your video I fry screamed a whole Alice Cooper song on my acoustic guitar. The Ballad of Dwight Fry. I found it was a fitting song. Haha. Now I can finally record some lyrics to my Black Metal stuff.
Excellent job dude. I've been watching some other guys on fancy studios and very long videos but I still couldn't get it. You just made it so much simpler in a much shorter video! I hope you get a ton more subscribers. Thank you for the content!
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. I try to not keep any of the important knowledge hidden behind a paywall or personal lessons with me. There are youtubers out there you will tell you a lot ABOUT screaming but not how to actually do it. I'm trying to make a difference there.
I come back to this video when I get lost after trying all kinds of weird stuff to make other types of sound. Is like a tuning fork for screaming. I miss you content so much. I'll have to become one of your students
Ok, amazing. The technique going from Vocal fry up to False vocal was what I needed. My fry was just to low, and the only other way was the whisper scream cuz I thought I shouldn't use my vocal cords even a little, but I need them at least a little. I drive trucks, I can scream for like 3 hours with no fatigue now or pain. Helps keep me awake lol. Thank you!
Broooo you give the most accurate and simplest explanation on 30s fry scream tutorial, that's all I need thanks!! 🔥🔥🔥 would you please make video about how to sustain fry vocal in higher pitch? I've working on it but almost no result.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the content. Yes, more detailed videos about how to get high and low will soon come. I wanted to start with the basics first.
Switching from vocal fry to compression method…is a game changer! I can already sing with rasp so adding that compression then breathiness really helped! Still not 100% but a great start. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’ve got false chord down pretty well and have been trying to unlock fey screams. I thought I was doing it wrong because I could feel my false chords activating and I was thinking only my vocal chords were making the fry scream
Truth be told, I feel bad this only has 5.4k views. Most informative/practical explanation i've seen on the platform, and i've seen many. Would've shared on social media, if i used it. Lol.
@@SINGANDSCREAM Glad to help brother. This account used to be named "Shuku". You've answered alot of my questions so far on different videos, so i'm glad im returning the favor somehow someway😉 Btw i enjoyed the livestream: I'll be back.
Thank you, because of you i unlock my scream in just 3 days. Your explanations are simple and straight to the point. Although my scream is inconsistent but still i feel happy to know how it feels to scream properly, no more inhale scream for me (im not sure if my scream is fry or false cord) got a new subscriber
Man your video is the most helpful I’ve found out of the hundreds I’ve watched. I am going horse every time I practice though I just wanted to see if this is common at first and will get better after time? Thanks for the very helpful video we appreciate it
How can I give you money for that? You are a really cool dude and a nice guy! Those youtube teachers did not tell you any of this stuff, before today I was trying to use my vocal fry instead of false-chords and compression, you've opened my eyes man.
Oh thanks man i appreciate it very much! I also have lenghty articles and tutorials on screaming on my website singandscream.com You can support me by either booking a lesson with me or by donating to my paypal. The link you can find within the articles :)
This is insane. Always felt that there was a huge difference in what’s happening during a vocal fry and the actually fry scream. Can you do a tutorial on false chords screams? Maybe also high fry scream because I can’t seem to hack it when I get into the head voice range
Hello, dear friend! First of all, I must say a huge "THANK YOU" for all these videos you make because they are incredibly helpful and you deserve a hell better than what you recieve from them! My question is, can I contact you in some way if you could help me know a little more about two techniques that I've been using for some time, but I kind of learnt by accident? I'm a guitarist, vocalist and beatboxer and I l'm really into discovering new unique types of vocal techniques and most from what I've learnt are distorted. Not sure if you know that, but if you've seen some beatboxers in the last couple of years, there's a huge variety of different unique bass vocal techniques, which are 100% vocals with no editing and all of them are really unique and with its own mechanism. So, I would say I'm able to do around 20 different distorted vocal techniques, including screaming techniques and bass vocal techniques. But my question is, if you could help me know a little more about those two I was taking about above, if you know some other vocalists using them or if you know a little more about the anatomical mechanisms of these two because the interesting thing is that, I've never really been only into death metal or deathcore music, as I know most of the time false cord and fry screams variations are mainly used there. I guess fry screams are a little more universal and versatile, as they play role in other genres sometimes, as well. I'm working the most on alternative rock music and one of my biggest goals ever, was to learn how to add tonal distortion to clean vocals, and still is. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not working that much on too heavy genres, but I would just love to master the techniques. Now that I've learnt a lot more unique, distorted techniques, after all, I'm still struggling with what I want to learn the most - distorted singing vocals. In one of the two techniques I was talking about, there basically a vocal fry, combined with falsetto without any type of tension, straining, compression or even too much breath control. Just tonal control is a little harder than usual, and to me it sounds like a more tunes version of a fry scream, with which I'm able to sing with distorted fry falsetto. The other one is a combination of whisper "compression" or more tightened whisper with a vocal fry synchronized. There's no tone in it and to me it sounds more like a quiet version of false cord scream but it feels really soft in your throat, as I think most vocal fry techniques should be. However, when I swallow or drink water after it, for some reason I'm not able to do it again in the upcoming seconds right after the swallowing. It takes me a couple of seconds or sometimes around a minute to get it again. I learnt both techniques from mimicking, almost two years ago. The tonal one, I learnt from listening to a lot of alternative rock vocalists adding grit to their singing. However, as I know, some of them like Kurt Cobain, were doing it wrong, putting the tension directly to their vocal cords. While listening to this, I was doing it in a completely different way. As I mentioned, adding a little vocal fry texture to falsetto singing. The other one I learnt was by listening to one bulgarian death metal vocalist. The second vocalist of the bulgarian band 'Grimaze'. You can check out some of their songs like 'Inner Engineering' or 'Endless Life Force' for example and you'll see what I'm talking about. You can also check out one of their acoustic covers when they play a 'Gojira' song and you'll hear how quiet it actually sounds, compared to other techniques. Their lyrics are in english, by the way. I may not do it the same way he does it, but I'm pretty sure that if it's not the same with what I do, it's pretty similar. I think it would be a lot better if you are able to actually hear it, instead of me only explaining in theory. I really apologize for the insanely huge comment... I hope I haven't wasted too much of your time. Thanks in advance for everything, mate! You are truly awesome! Greetings from Bulgaria! 😁💛🇧🇬🍀🔥💯🎶✨
Hello there and thank you so much for the kind words. You can send me some recordings of you via mail weidenauerlessons@gmail.com and I will feature them either in the next live stream or give you my thoughts when I have the time. I also give 1on1 lessons. You can find out about my lessons on www.singandscream.com/lessons What I would encourage you to do is digest everything you can find about vocal effects on the internet. A good resource is the Complete Vocal Institutes material on vocal effects. There are also lectures from them on RU-vid iirc. You can also read the guides on my website singandscream.com for more Infos on these effects. You can combine many things in unique ways together to create cool sounds. As long as it feels comfortable and doesn't leave any impact on your voice after practicing you should be good. Cheers!
Thanks man for this tutorial I’m naturally more of a singer than a screamer but I do enjoy heavy music a lot that’s the kind of music I want to make false cord screaming was easy to get down and came a lot easier and am way better at that but I do like the way fry screaming sounds But it’s very hard on my throat and just doesn’t sound very beefy nor very loud I don’t know maybe I’m not doing it right I’m not sure but it sounds like a fry scream to me I guess the only reason it sounds halfway decent is because I’m learning how to do subharmonic singing which uses vocal fry.
Wait dude. Wtf thank you. Everyone here I'm sure has been through hundreds of videos 🤣 there was one girl who said it wasn't the same as vocal fry, but didn't explain it like this. Now i actually have something to practice. Fuck dude. You're a legend
I’ve only got the one pitch atm taking it slow. But holy shit I’ve been trying to learn this for many months now more the Chester pitched scream but this style scream instantly worked for me. I’m coming fresh from one of those accidental screamers and instantly know what you mean. I was using pure fry only thinking it didn’t make sense but I’ll try. All that gets you is Maria Brink sound lol. Then again Cradle Of Filth also I do actually believe. Then again the man kills his face like this style so maybe it’s actually more this. Not gonna try that one til I get this one pitch down lol.
If I’m not mistaken it’s actually your arytenoids activating since they are right above your chords. Doing this feels completely different from actual false chord technique.
I think I tried learning fry screams 10 years ago but never even got close. I learned how to do false chord screams in the 90's but even then I always seem to have to re-learn them I don't do them for a time so I can record songs which I don't do often enough.
@@SINGANDSCREAM ok thank you! I know seem to have problems with the "exhale through that" part. If I try to add breathiness the way I understand it the whole thing falls apart. Any tips? Again thanks a ton for all the info!!
This video channel makes learning paths EASIER. Thing is, I want to feel and do normal diaphragm distortion right, then proceed to try other techniques. Got any advices on doing that?
Thank you! Im not really what you mean by diaphragm distortion. Could you elaborate? To be precise the diaphragm is the muscle that controls your breathing. It cant distort anything because it is not inside your throat, it doesnt create sound, it is beneath your lungs.
@@SINGANDSCREAM My bad, I meant like using vocal fry as a way to distort your sound (like Chino Moreno from deftones). Everytime I use vocal fry for distortion, It doesn't feel right after.
@@exotic8341 If you use vocal fry for distortion i'd like you to do the voice check after practicing like i describe it in my latest video to check whether whatyou are doing there is harmful for your voice. Either way i recommend you to learn how to use your false folds from compression.
Ah alright. I don't knownwhat false folds are but I learj something new everyday lol. I'll consider your epic words sir. Is there some place where I can frequently ask questions without much disturbance?
Hi, my goal is being able to use a technique closest to Will Ramos from Lorna Shore (not very original I know). I've heard here and there that he uses a hybrid scream (as in combining false cord and fry scream) but his tone is more fry forward. Do I need to do anything different from this video to achieve it ? Thanks in advance.
Hey bro, sounds like I do the same vocal technique as you. I’ve been searching for years now to find someone who does my style. Would love to get in contact and see what else I could learn from you! Regards, Zach.
No matter what I do when i add compression the sound always comes from my throat and its very airy, sounds awful and is super painful lol. I'm not sure what im doing wrong I've been at it for over a year now
Thanks for the video but I think I will never can do this:( So I found the fry tone but when I add the pressure then I only cough and the fry is blocked.
Your videos are WAY better than those 20 minute ones. My goal is to sound raspy kinda like freddie mercury, is fry supposed to create that kind of sound? Cause it always sounds an octave lower when i try vocal fry.
Thank you! For Freddy Mercury style rasp STAY AWAY from vocal fry. It has NOTHING to do with any vocal fry. Freddy style rasp is all from the false folds. Vocal folds sing completely normally. I suggest you take a look at the first two steps of my How to Fry Scream or How to Scream like Chester video. They all start with getting you to use your false folds while singing.
@@yaralahoud7574 i wouldnt say so. if you find them that way thats great but its definetely a more convoluted way of approaching it. i doubt that will help you
@@SINGANDSCREAM oh ok. There's a singer called gabriella valdess and she covers "i see red" she uses a distorted sound, could you please give it a listen? I really wanna know if she uses false chords because she sounds like a rockstar and i wanna sound that way.
4:45 I can kinda do those first two steps but when it's time to apply the breath I inmediately cough and can not continue, anyone knows why that might be?
ayyy dude so update, turns out this whole time ive been doing your fry scream from the 30 sec fry scream tutorial and even went through ur website as well and lots of great info, i just have a question about the twang. when i use twang and go a bit louder i get like a “buzzer” noise. then when i add compression it already basically sounds like the fry scream u do. im just not sure if i have it down because, when i get to the last step “add extra breathyness” it seems to stop all the other things from happening so im wondering if im unintentionally already adding the breathyness and just adding extra on top of that which ruins it, or, im already doing it right. lol. another thing, how i got here is i was trying to learn how to do a “false chord” scream because thats what everyone says corey taylor is doing. i suppose my question is a) how did i get a fry scream while trying to understand false chord screams and b) well since im at the fry scream now with the breathyness, i find i can get mid and low sounds and thats my limit. i can i suppose “sing” a high note but as soon as compression is added it sounds very low or just back to the standard mid fry scream. i am using the flat tongue with back of tongue being at roof of mouth with mouth open very wide (i cannot open my mouth very wide lol) but i still get mids/lows. however, if i start by using vocal fry or the grudge noise and add compression it automatically sounds very high (kinda like nekrogoblikons vocals). am i heading in the right direction? lol also this paragraph could have been way shorter i apologize in advance for the novel posted here.
If it already sounds like a fry scream its likely already a fry scream, so skip that step then and go with what feels and sounds good to you! You are likely doing a fry scream with compression and vocal fry inside instead of breathiness
For this fry scream here you need a good amount of compression. But since I know exactly "where" the technique ist and how much compression I need for it I don't compress too hard or create unnecessary tension. At first once you slip onto the scream you may do way too much. After achieving the scream and being able to do it again reliably you should aim at reducing what you can reduce without the scream going away.
I’ve always thought I was doing something wrong because of how much compression I needed to get my frys going. How would one go about making the distortion more apparent and the compressed vocals bellow less apparent? Most of the times I scream I can hear the pitch just a bit more than I’d like, and it doesn’t sound like good pitched screaming because of this excessive compression.
I’m pretty sure it’s the exhale after. You need all 3; compression, distortion and exhale to make your fry scream more apparent. I’m learning this too.
There is a pretty hard cap with fry screams. Where it is depends on many things BUT don't pursue loudness just to get louder. In the end you sing into a microphone and this evens out all the volume differences. A louder scream in the room sounds of course more impressive, but in the mix or live into the mic it will not necessarily translate this way.
I can do it in chest voice but I’m having trouble understanding how to get the compression past my passagio(G4). Is the larynx supposed to remain low or does it change when you go into mix voice? I can’t seem to find the right coordination…. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Dumb question: vocal fry is the same as false cord? Also, great content, helped me a lot to know that I'm actually going in the right way about the fry scream, the compression explanation was what I needed to hear.
Great explanation! I figured out that the whisper part is the most important thing in fry scream, otherwise it will remain only an unprojected fry noise , am I right ?
I'd say the most important thing is the compression / false fold activation. But nevertheless, the one thing you lack will make the scream not sound complete!
Trying to do this method, and I can't tell whether I'm being a coward or if I'm missing something. I can sometimes hit a decent false chord scream, but any time I try to get my false fry compression it just. I can't get past the blockage I feel no matter how intense I'm going- I've had these issues with most techniques based on compression (as a singer who has the experience of 'dear heck do not push the voice you will cause damage' and learned it the hard way through vocal rest)... my false chord scream relies on everything being open in the throat and posture, and I can only do it in my low range. I would like to expand my scream versatility, but I feel like I'm hitting something wrong whenever I try. All I get is a lot of coughing from spending too long against the compressed near-cough space, and I can't put any fry into it or the back of my throat just gets all stuck (I've heard that if done right, I shouldn't feel too much and I definitely shouldn't feel any negative aftereffects. So I'm pretty darn sure I'm doing it wrong, but I don't know what I'm messing up, or how to fix it to keep my voice healthy- I'm a lot more experienced with clean singing and I really want to keep that part intact. Of note is that I'm also basically always congested, so I imagine that has an effect.
I’ve found screaming with mouth closed (like humming) works to overcome this because you can’t force that much air without your mouth open so very little risk of damage. Regular vocals warm up with humming too
Check out singandscream.com for personal lessons. Once I have time for RU-vid again I can focus on these singers in another live stream. Don't give up and practice safely!
Its like i get the general sound, its just super quiet and makes my throat itch/scratchy and ill cough. Theres no SHARP pains or anything, i would know if its hurting right?
Itchy and need to cough is common when activating the false folds for the first couple of times. Do the voice checks I cover in my HOW TO PRACTICE SAFELY video. If these sensations don't go away after a couple practices you are doing something wrong.
FC and Fry feel VERY different. Once you can do both techniques you will inevitably notice. Fry feels compressed and rather small. FC feels huge and loose and is way louder
