Yeah, because Paris is a very rapey sort of town. I remember being there as a teenager and wearing jeans and a shirt and grown men coming up to me and being inappropriate. I would cover up.
What happened to the time when “putting your best foot forward” and looking lovely was a GIFT to the person who has to look at you? Thankfully, the French are “holding a line”, especially in Paris, against the “comfort” -“let it all hang out” rebellion!! 🇫🇷💙
Many American women just look downright sleazy. I especially hate those super-short, ragged denim cutoffs that show the bare buttocks. Then, they complain when men stare, but isn’t that what they want? Why else let body parts hang out?! Nipple-revealing sheer or super low-cut tops are another problem. They claim they want to be respected and taken seriously, but then dress like street-walkers. It can be downright unsafe for women to show too much, or look too provocative. Many super-violent criminals target young women who look like that, because they think no one will care if they vanish! I can’t stand thinking about the terrible risk they take.
Unfortunately, it seems that showing off their breasts or dressing provocatively is all many younger women think they have to offer. They lead with it. They do it to compete with other women are dressed in the same way, especially for the attention of men.
As an American, I’ve seen so many people go in their pajamas everywhere. Gas stations, coffee shops, grocery stores, the works. I personally don’t cause you never know what situation you’ll end up in when you go out. It’s always best to be prepared and dressed nicely at the very least
The only time I might wear pajamas out is if I'm wearing a long coat over them and just driving through to get some food. But if I'm getting out of the car, no way, LOL.
Years ago I was training in a psychiatric facility. All patients had to wear pyjamas at all times so that if they absconded they’d be noticed out in public. Now they might just blend in…!
When I travel to NYC or Paris, for years now, I always reverse the bag. I think the Mona Lisa pocket is distinct enough that others know it's Chanel, but I still reverse the bag so that, as you point out, pickpockets cannot gain easy access.
If only Americans would care more about appropriate dressing. Of course many do. My husband is in the grocery business and has seen people shopping in pajamas, a bathrobe, and slippers. SO RIDICULOUS!!!
As an American I do care about how I dress. I and all my friends would never wear pajamas to the store. I like wearing classy clothes and even grocery shopping. If I dress well then I feel better about myself. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just be appropriate. ❤
@@Hippy2021 As an American who has lived and traveled all over our lovely country, I can assure you this is an accurate comment. I've seen pajamas worn in publuc countless times....in university classes, on the street walking, in grocery stores, Wal-Mart....eeesh.
I was cracking up about the pajamas in public part! I recall a few years back when teenagers were doing that in my area and slippers included (Uggs). So silly looking but they were young. I can't imagine seeing this outside the suburbs let alone in Paris!
So went to University in Angers and one morning I overslept but I lived only 3 minuter from door to classrom and that day there was an important test which you were not allowed to take if you showed up late … so … I showed up in actual pyyamas - fully covering and tbh pretty good looking and huge lion paw slippers 😂 fortunatly my professor allowed it and when more people came and were late …they were not allowed to take the test and the professor indicated me and said -some people make an effort to be on time no matter what….😅
We just need women, ladies girls in America to have more class more elegance, take pride in their self, I get up in the morning I do my hair I do my make up I put my clothes on. I put my jewelry on even if I’m digging in the garden, yes man makes me feel better. And I did that doing Covid. I have one pair of sweatpants I don’t own any joggers when I go to the gym I even have my jewelry on never know who I could meet a friend of mine met her future husband there now that I’m single again you’ll never know we can learn so much from the women in France
I am going to Paris for the first time in a couple of months. I really just want to fit in, and not be noticed at all. I am also trying to learn a little French. This was a very helpful video
I live in New York City and I have seen people in pajamas so many times! hahaha This is a great video, thank you so much for the tips! I just subscribed to you channel! My dream is to visit Paris one day!!
Hello Mila, I saw some of your SEZANE videos since I love this brand too. Hope you can visit Paris one day, it is a great city and very different to NY
Bonjour Alice, your video makes me miss Paris. During my annual visit to France since age 14, I endeavored to be a “mini-ambassador” for my country, to do my part to repair the many negative stereotypes for USA: I spoke French, was always calm/polite/courteous, and especially loved to dress beautifully every day. This video, Paris, you, all inspire me to do better in my everyday life. Merci Alice.
Bonjour! Enjoyed your video. Great advice no matter where you’re going. I love dressing to go out. Classy and comfortable is for me. I love berets too!
I love dress up. When living in Boston area I truly suffer because people used to live in gym clothing all the time and not dressing up…. Very different to my Parisian life and also NYC or LA where people enjoy to dress up. It was really hard…
Paris is my favorite city. I have always had great experiences with the people. I want to visit Marseille, my grandmother's side of the family is from there.
Luckily I haven't experience the pajama thing in 12 years in US but I know it does happen, actually my European friend was guilty of it when she lived in California. But the work out gear yes, people work out and then go for coffee after their class, as well I have friends who are trainers and they do live in their workout gear as they have classes all day, fitness is much bigger in US then in Europe, I think its because in Europe we walk more but in US the cities are much bigger so you must drive everywhere and that takes your steps away. Paris definitely has the French chic vibe which I love, the timeless classic. I am going to Paris soon so this was great video 🙏🏻🙏🏻
What does "My European Friend" mean. English? French? German? Italian? Danish? Finnish?! Note - North America, is a Country. Europe - is a HUGE Continent. Ditto "Asia" - & watching various U S types saying "Oh that Asian man" or " My European Friend" is the height of silliness, (& it's also extremely impolite, if not very, very, rude) obvs you can swap yr trainers for decent casual shoes, NOT wear huge logos & "not wear sports gear for everyday" - except actually IN the Gym - but yr wasting the effort if you say such things. (& I say this kindly💜💜-but you must realise how truly awful & disrespectful saying such things is - you know; As if you think YOUR Country is the Only Country that counts!🙈💜- & it really isn't. Never was, actually, sorry to explain the reality of the World outside of the Domestic U S (although I am kindly explaining this to you - better it's me, than you saying this sort of thing) - as you decide to browse Hernes or Chanel OR if you're entering a half decent Restaurant or smart, bijoux Hotel in Paris (bc they will roll their eyes, talk about you in a language you don't speak nor understand - & make v unpleasant remarks -& ALL yr food will be cold OR the waiter may put something in yr coffee (or "dinner") that you don't want to consume, you know.. ouf)🙏💜🇬🇧💜🌏💜 NB) - She doesn't mean "workout in sports gear then get coffee. She means - fat U S ppl who wear "sports clothes" & ugly, colourful on white trainers that aren't pristine, ALL day everyday🙈💜 Now remember, when in Paris; don't think that way. Think - always describe ppl (respectfully) by Nationality. (& follow ALL the rules she tells you on here.) I could bring up a few more that I've learned in Paris & France altogether (+ I speak the language so I can understand what they say about the Tourists) but it's a lot to remember, so - this will do for now. (& then you'll impress them as a "smart" U S person & they won't roll their eyes - or glance off each other etc.) & most importantly; remember - Not to be "the loudest person anywhere" - & then it will all go VERY well.🤗💜 (Note further, & I must say this, bc hopefully it's not yr fault; DO⚠️NOT watch Emily in Paris🙈💜 & do NOT mention it!⚠️That really hurt you lot🥺💜 & "Europeans, espc French & UK - are NOT happy & it just gets worse & worse every series. (Oh & espc in China - ouf) Do NOT mention it, & if they do, strongly & subtly deny ALL knowledge - you hv NEVER seen it, Never heard of it!🙏💜
@@Seraphine07F well I did see the show and I definitely don't like the show, but as well American aren't like that, the show is more like a comedy making fun of all countries mentioned within the show. I don't know what kind of life style you live but I am too old to worry of what someone thinks of me, it's so unimportant to me, I live my life free. My friend was Czech, but as well I just had French man wearing Adidas hoodie through Prague. I think your message has bit of personal insecurities because honestly why do you care what someone you will never see or perhaps didn't even notice think of you? Like why? All nationalities have elegant and not nicely dressed people, all of them! I don't live my life to judge and complain but I do appreciate your message even it's not even close to what I was talking about or who I am but thank you I did enjoy this conversation.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Alice, enjoyed video very much. I hope to visit Paris next year and will visit Maison Michelle for hats! Thx for tip. You look lovely as always.
Thank you for this wonderful video and I agree with you on all counts. Perhaps you should do a video about what to wear as opposed to what not to wear. Last time I was in Paris I was shocked to see so many Parisians wearing Levi’s T-shirts. Nobody in New York wears them!
@@Aliceinparisofficial Understood. I’m still a little foggy about leggings being appropriate or not. Everybody in New York wears them. I saw on one of your videos your leggings with a sweater or a sweatshirt I can’t remember. I’d like a little clarity about your feelings about that. Merci!
The wearing pajamas or working out gear trend are def something I noticed in more well-off suburbs here in the US. It’s safe to assume they will be driving directly from home to the big stores for a couple things in a very nice, well kept community, and then drive directly home. Dressing up too nice in outfits you would only wear for occasions makes you look trying too hard and therefore you are not actually rich. Though I supposed that is a thing everywhere. But what is considered too nice definitely can vary. in the city When I moved away to a different area for work NOT in the suburbs with a different demographic and city planning, people would def stare and scratch their head at me if I bring my clean pajama to sweep dust out and about. People dress practical. And I really don’t see young women out and about grocery shopping, probably they are not very comfortable with wearing usually the form fitting leggings out and about where you never know what kind of creepy stranger might approach.
Unfortunately, post Covid most everyone in Manhattan is wearing workout gear everywhere. I felt like a freak because I would actually dress before going out. I now live in Rome where no one would dream of leaving the house in workout gear or PJs because it's considered disrespectful and tacky.
I live in the states and have seen a person wearing pajamas or what looked like pajamas in public (at the grocery market!) but this video sounds like this is acceptable in the United States. It is not. I do agree many people here wear athleisure. I do wear casual clothing more often now but I wouldn’t be comfortable wearing workout clothing to brunch or a bar. I do wear workout clothing on the way to the gym or the park, however I understand in other countries it is more common to only change into the fitness attire once arriving at the gym.
Hello Natalie. I lived for 8 years in USA... NYC, Boston, LA, ect... I have seen people wearing pyjama a lot usually in drugstore. Of course for people like you and me it is not acceptable but they do not receive as bad attention as they would if they were in Paris. No glance, nothing. Just business as usual and I was the only one amused. In Paris, people will make a comment very loudly.
@@Aliceinparisofficial Well, to be fair, one has to try hard to draw disapproving attention in cities like New York or LA. I believe that's because there are so many odd people on the streets that the locals are used to seeing some pretty bizarre manners of dress. And then there are the outright crazies who will attack you if you give them a look, so people just avoid any kind of interaction like that.
I am in Paris right this minute. Just spent the day shopping on Champs with my wife. We have been here for a week in every corner of the city. I will owed all the advice on proper dress before coming here and after a week let me save you some time and money. Wear whatever you are comfortable in. EVERYONE else is was also in Lisbon, Lindon, Rotterdam and Spain. All this “dress code” I’m sad to say us BS.
Hello Jack very few Parisian walking or doing shopping in Champs (I do time to time because I live in the 8th) so yes a lot of chance to be surrounded by tourists...restaurants there are below average any parisian would never stop there eating. I understand that being average and dressing half naked or with no decency is the norm but Yes there is dress code in luxury boutiques and nice places in Paris. Some tourists get laugh at and they are wondering what is wrong.... others scream loud in the metro, use space with their suitcase without saying sorry... we Parisian do have an opinion and my advices go for everyone who is traveling.
I dont know where in America you saw ppl wearing pyjamas? 😳🤪 i have been living here, in US , for over 20 years, and havent seen that everyone or a lot of ppl wear pyjamas outside. And Chanel handbag backwards still recognizable, especially criminals would know how luxury looks 😂
Oh, I’ve seen Maryland. I’ve seen it everywhere walk into Walmart. I don’t go often but go into Walmart. Sometimes your grocery store I see women with pajamas some of the pants they have on our pajamas. Sometimes you can see their butt crack I mean, sometimes the way women dress in America I just shake my head. I just shake my head and people think they can learn from the Kardashians are a no thank you no thank you they are not elegant and they are not classy. We can learn a lot from the French women.
Pajamas in public are frowned upon in the US, too. Although some groups wear them, most do not. Some travel "experts" advise taking old clothes when traveling. I think that is terrible advice. Who wants to look frumpy when visiting another country? Good advice in your video.
Such great advice, loved this video, thank you Alice. At 2:20 you popped up a picture of a typical Parisienne look and the picture on the left included some GORGEOUS shoes with two straps and a bit of a heel. Is there any chance you know who makes these beautiful shoes? I love a small heel for walking all day. Thank you so much,.
I am brand new to your channel, and found this video very helpful! Can you please give some advice about what kind of everyday purses to use that are practical, and don’t make you look like a tourist? Thank you for your time!
@@Aliceinparisofficial I would love that as well! I'm visiting this summer and debating which bag to bring. I lived in Paris for a semester in college and can't wait to introduce my daughter to my favorite place.
@@susanmacaluso5218 is it ok to just use some sort of neutral color, or do you have to match it with a color that you are wearing? Someone on a Facebook group I’m a part of said you’re not supposed to use a crossbody bag, but if I don’t I’m afraid I’ll lose it. What is your advice in regards to that?
Is it appropriate to wear Birkenstock flip flop?(it's not a real flip flop but it's similar and it's the only Birkenstock model I like since I have severe feet and back problems)
I’ve always said that I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing Birkenstocks in Europe. That went out the window fast! When you’re walking all day and your feet are beat the hell up then fuck it! I’m wearing Birkenstocks.
America is a mix culture… I personally won’t wear pajamas in a grocery store… It mainly depends on their upbringing and what parts of the country or state you’re shopping… If your just at Walmart… anything goes 😂😂😂
Hello true but it’s not a question of money. My ex (ex financier Ivy League) used to be in pyjama when off. Also I used to live in wealthy area and people were just living on gym clothing all the time… I see more pyjama in drugstore or Walmart
We know some people lack taste, ahem, Kardashian, however I haven't ever worn anything like the left side of the thumbnail. What was the right side, the pajamas--only old people and young children wear them outdoors in Hong Kong. I'm sure lots of people wouldn't wear that anywhere, not only in Paris.
Love your videos… Going to Paris and Nice in a week… What do you think would be the most comfortable stylish sneakers? And what other shoes? Thanks so much for your videos and your help🥰
What I am hearing is, if you were anything expensive you run the risk of it being stolen, a bit concerning, London is dangerous but not quite like this.
hello Sarah it is still cold here so linen light be too early. We have a cold spring this year. I wear linen usually for July and August. I will do some videos about what to wear in Paris
@@dragamboazulinqiacupuntura122 winter hats worn outdoors are fine! It’s indoors and as an accessory that the general rule applies to, as shown in the video! I should have been more specific.
I don't know why but the fact there are so many rules and only specific things expected to wear I feel like it's their problem to be in a box. I would wear whatever I want, not slutty but if I love my Parachute pants and crop top, I will wear it there lol
The home of Coco Chanel. Parisians don’t recognize a Chanel bag ? How do Parisians do with the Birkin bag ? Do they not recognize that either ? What about Jane Birkin herself ? I don’t think you give Parisians the credit they deserve. I like your channel, it’s funny.
@@nhny58 Thank you. Some wealthy parisians do others not. It is very diverse in general. Birkin bag is highly considered here... supreme luxury and parisian style. Jane birkin is an icone here but with many others Françoise Hardy, Adjani, Bardot ect. The street in Paris is diverse for some people as long as the logo does not appear, they will not notice. About the 2.55 which has NO chanel logo but ultimate Chanel style, few people know it is a Chanel. Only true parisian will immediately spot it. And I have nothing to fear from this people :)
She forgot to mention that it is cold AF from October to May, so maybe that's why shorts, mini skirts or even high heals are not recommended unless you wanna freeze your butt off...
yep but I have seen girls wearing mini skirts and cropped in the middle of december... they weren't French, I think british...the first comment was from my ex boyfriend saying "they can't dress properly?! they should not dress like that in Paris 😂" I replied "they are tourists"
@@Aliceinparisofficial Too bad you think Americans are tacky. Perhaps some are, but I have seen bad taste all over the world. You seem to single us out as bad examples I guess Europeans just love to complain about Americans.
As an American, I too frown on the practice of wearing pjs out in public but it is not like half the people here are doing it. 😅 One thing about Americans, we are not monolithic. We are very diverse. While some approach to presentation may not be in the best taste, we are not a cookie cutter society. We are also not an uptight society, so everyone will not look prim and proper whenever leaving home. I will leave my gym class, in my gym clothes (with a coverup on) and grocery shop. Unapologetically 😂 While it is important to be respectful of other’s cultures, a tourist is a tourist and will not blend in. I understand that in some European cultures, it’s okay to stand extremely close or to reach over someone during shopping, but I just realize that this is likely a part of a culture or that particular person. I also understand that a number of Europeans stare at Black Americans but I don’t equate this to the masses.
@@comfychic6029 I lived in America for 8 years and I really enjoy the vibe and the culture. It was a great experience. There are things I took back with me like gym clothing and sneakers... I enjoy wearing it on sunday and sometimes when I am super lazy to dress up. This video is only for tips purpose especially if you want to enter everywhere. There is a dress code and in Paris its very implicit sometimes. Its like that. My ex fiance who was american and ex Ivy Ligue was all the time in Pj when off 😂 it was a shock between 10k suits and a frumpy pyjama. He used to say "Alice you can wear your casual pj its ok" and I replied "I can't I am Parisian "😂😂😂
@@Aliceinparisofficial I do understand that the pjs out are a shock for you as they are for me. Glad you didn’t take your bf’s advice 😂. I appreciate your willingness to help us understand the culture of Paris. I just hate when people approach education about cultural differences as condescending, whether said or implied. Sometimes the tone can be a bit elitist. I understand that this is your channel, your opinion and I don’t have to watch but it’s giving a little tone deaf 😅. You are correct in SOME of what you are saying. I think the issue is the tone and the possibility of those who have never visited thinking that we crazy Americans are just lazying around in our night clothes. We too have dress codes for our more upscale restaurants here and I love and appreciate that bc there are a few people who will test their boundaries. I will be coming to Paris in the fall for the first time and I assure you that I will be appropriately dressed. ☺️.
I’m an American and there isn’t a blanket rule about pjs in public. I lived in the Pacific NW and believe me, pjs are worn in public. I teach at a community college and students do wear pj bottoms. Not as much as 7-8 years ago
I wouldn’t wear any of these things here in the US, either, especially the skimpy, really sexy clothes that a lot of American women wear. I don’t think any of it is appropriate for public, day or street wear. That said, I’m usually one of the most modestly and formally dressed woman around. Everyone (almost) where I live wears black or gray tight and skimpy, or loose and baggy, polyester gym clothes or pajamas, and flip-flops, except me! I would be absolutely miserable in those. If would improve your videos is you would pronounce women correctly, as you say it so often. Forget the O in it, it’s pronounced Wimin or Wimen. Go by ear, not spelling, for this word, English spelling is nonsensensical. Thanks for the authentic French tips. I don’t have to worry about designer logos because I don’t have any! Not being rich has its benefits.
Granted, you're on point about the athletic wear and I have seen people in public in pajamas - I would not, but that is my choice. The way Parisians like to run their mouths though with those loud comments they like to make gives Paris the feeling of a city filled with bullies who peaked in high school.
Hello Kristina I bought that a few days ago. I even got compliments in the streets in Paris. Its from a Parisian brand and it's handmade. its iconic for Parisian woman. I will post a video about my shopping ane the brand !
