Who are the Adivasis? A group that is officially considered by the Indian and other South Asian governments to be the “original native inhabitants” of their land? Well the term has diverse connotations, but in today's video we are going to be looking at the original peoples of South Asia, where the went and how they evolved into the modern South Asian ethnic groups we see today.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the indigenous South Asians and their remnant populations such as the Adivasis, Vedda or Andamanese, as well as the evolution of South Asian societies through intermixing and the caste system. Thanks for watching!

Finally a video on my people, I have to say that even I myself am quite amazed at how isolated (culturally) we the Austro-Asiatics remain even after joining the mainstream. We still marry among our own tribe preferably avoiding even the other tribe even the neighboring ones. The language for one is completely different than what the Aryan and the Dravidian speak, with the exception to Kurukh which is of Dravidian origin and certain other languages spoken in southern India. But sadly there's hardly much research done on my people group, we have rely on our oral story telling traditions to understand ourselves, our culture, our ancestors and history, the migrations stories are the best, its amazing how the story of passing through arid land of middle east and crossing the Hindu Kush mountains ranges still stay with our people. I am Proto Austro-Asiatic by the way. Love your videos. Keep educating us on genetic human history.

The original Indians and original humans in general probably closely resembled the Andamanese. Also, I think it's interesting that certain groups in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the north look typically "south Indian" in appearance, while some in Karnataka and Kerala, and even some Tamil, can look "north Indian." Bottom line, everyone around the whole world is "mixed" and no one is ethnically "pure." Which is why I find white supremacy and racism to be idiotic.

Thank you very much for this amazing video. My maternal grandpa was a Central Indian Austric Tribal and grandma a Tibeto-Burman from the Northeast. It's always made me wonder what their history was since most people when mentioning India only talk about the Aryans and Dravidians. Becomes difficult for someone like me to relate entirely with just one group as half of my ancestry is Aryo-Dravidian and the other half Austric - Tibeto-Burman. Great video man. If possible try and make an in depth video of how various groups (Austrics, Sino-Tibetans, Indo Aryans, Shans) came together throughout history to form the present day population of the North East. That would be awesome. 😊👌🏽

Though to my knowledge she's never been genetically tested, the ethnic Indian wife of one of my former best friends ("former" because I'm in California and he and his family now live in Colorado) is almost certainly part-Adivasi. I theorize that she must come from the extreme eastern part of the subcontinent, because while her skin is very dark, her eyes are noticeably slanted; the eyes of her two brothers are even more slanted. So she and the two brothers-in-law must be some combination of either Adivasi and Austric or Adivasi and Tibeto-Burman. (But her name is "Annie," because she's very Americanized.) My friend is definitely of European descent, and he and his wife have two little sons who are basically Caucasoid in appearance, but with slightly dark skin.

Your video is one of the best explanation of migration to Indian subcontinent. While most people distinguish only Aryans and Dravidian. There were three groups. The first are South Asian hunter-gatherers, described in a.major study as ANCIENT Ancestral South Indians or AASI (and not ASI or Ancestral South Indian), the oldest people of the subcontinent, related to modern-day Andaman islanders. Then there are Iranian agriculturists, who were known to have come to the subcontinent, possibly bringing certain forms of cultivation of wheat and barley with them. This group mixed with AASI to form Indus Valley Civilisation (IVC) people in North. IVC moved South when Steppe pastoralist came and again mixed with AASI to give rise to ASI in final sense. And finally, there are the Steppe pastoralists, the inhabitants of the vast Central Asian grasslands to the north of Afghanistan, who were previously known as ‘Aryans.’ Who later formed ANI after intermixing with IVC in North. ANI and ASI intermixed while some pockets of AASI were left nascent as told in your video. Great job never seen this much comprehensive explanation before.
@isimerias
@isimerias 6 лет назад
Abhinav Pandey maybe for you it was because you're already acquainted with it but I was confused more than anything. It wasn't clear to me whether he was suggesting there is a third original population or not, that he seems to suggest did not speak a Dravidian language? When you mention Iranian agriculturalists are you referencing the Elamites and other "native" Iranians and did their language evolve into Dravidian?
@abhinavpandey3072
@abhinavpandey3072 6 лет назад
Theodore Stathopoulos Yes according to most studies there have been three waves of migration. First wave happened 70000 years ago. Second wave 6000 to 8000 years ago, they intermixed with first group (AASI)and formed Indus Valley Civilization people in North. These groups evolved Dravidian languages, that's the reason a pocket of Dravidian language is found in Western Pakistan, West of Indus river. This is also the reason Tamil language predates Sanskrit (Indo European) language. IVC too moved Southwards and mixed with AASI there and formed final ASI. Third wave happened between 3500 to 4500 years ago. They were Indo Aryans from Steppes. They formed ANI after intermixing with IVC in North. ASI and ANI extensively intermixed over next 2000 years. amp.scroll.in/article/874102/aryan-migration-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-study-on-indian-genetics
@isimerias
@isimerias 6 лет назад
Abhinav Pandey thank you for the clarification' I really appreciate it! It makes total sense now I don't know why I assumed Dravidians were the original inhabitants of South Asia when the pattern in history is for hunter gatherers to be replaced culturally and linguistically by peoples bringing agriculture with them. In a way Dravidians represent the Neolithic expansion in the same way that native Europeans were replaced by farmers from the Middle East. From this point of view South Asia is extremely blessed to have this phase of history preserved and represented in its people, which has sadly often been erased by incoming people's such as in Europe

@abhinavpandey3072

Ava S. Yes there were homo sapiens originated in Africa 300000 years ago. They migrated too. But the modern homo sapiens migrated 70000 years ago to West Asia, South and SE Asia and Oceania. They migrated to Europe 45000 to 30000 years ago replacing Neanderthal as dominant species. While different homonoids have been migrating since 2 million years, but they were all early homonoids and not homo sapiens. Can't say about creationist beliefs, that has never been my forte, but to best of my knowledge most scientific evidences come to consensus, that I mentioned above.

Being an Adivasi from central India, I have often wondered about my origins, so thank you so much for such an in depth analysis , though I first need to watch your video on haplogroups to understand it better. Also, many a tribal groups these days identify with one or the other mainstream religions which has also led to more mixing of the genes since a century or two, though marriages mostly , and even among the adivasis of central India there is a slight difference in appearances as you move from one region to another and then offcourse the central Indian Adivasis look significantly different from that of south Indian adivasis, and even the native Indians won't be able to distinguish much. These are just my observations, I could be wrong too as I am no expert on the subject, Thanks again 😊😊

When it comes to people coming out of the steppes this pattern repeats itself over and over. They start out nomadic to some degree. If they’re lucky they conquer a “civilization” (many don’t). The noteworthy examples: Indo-Iranians, Huns, Magyars, Mongols...you get the picture. These guys are hard to repell. They blend in, changing the indigenous and being changed by them. Becoming less martial, softened by “civilization“ ,they run afoul of internal revolutionaries or the next group of nomads coming off the steppe. Shampoo, rinse ,repeat... Shampoo, rinse ,repeat...

One thing I don’t get…is when farmers and hunters mix, the farmer population is so much higher than the hunters so the resulting mixed population is always more genetically farmer dominant than hunter-gatherer. You can see this happened in Europe, Africa with the Bantu migrations, or in Southeast Asia. But in India you see the AASI hunter component make up a huge, and even majority of ancestry in some populations. Which probably means that the AASI were either influenced by the farmers to the north and began farming before the farmers reached the south, or they developed farming independently.
@unn5443
@unn5443 Год назад
The IVC farmers weren't just one people but a mix of even these AASI hunter gatherer who they taught how to farm. IVC had only two strata. The priest kings and commoner and many of the commoner were these AASI, the docile kind. The more volatile kind were the proper Hunter gatherer, and those lived around Central Indian plateau.

Nayan Tambe Ty for the informative video. Contrary to modern linguistic and prehistoric-anthropological theories, there was never an external invasion of a proto Indo-European culture into the Indian subcontinent. The Vedas never mention an original homeland outside of India, and if modern timelines for Indian history are accepted (with the aryans arriving ca 2000 bc, it’s not likely the theoretical proto Indo-Europeans would have forgotten their roots in such a short time period (ca 500 years, as the Vedas are arbitrarily dated by modern Indologists to 1500bc). It is no more likely than modern Americans forgetting their european origins.) Satellite imaging also revealed the Sarasvati riverbed, said to have dried up around at least 2000bc, yet the vedas describe it as spanning miles wide. Therefore the vedas would have to be dated much further into the past. Astronomical observations when vacillated backwards to descriptions of the stars’ location date the vedas even further back, up to 50,000 years. Note that such calculations are practically impossible to calculate retroactively without use of modern computers (the margin of error would be too great). The vedas are famous for their astronomical observations via the jyotisha Shastras such as Surya Siddhanta. They also give ages of the earth in epoch of billions of years, as observed by Carl Sagan. It was the Vedic Aryans [In its original context “aryan” simply denoted a follower of a civilization whose aim was self-realization*]...who gave the world some of the earliest philosophical texts on the makeup of matter and the theoretical underpinnings for the chemical makeup of minerals. Sanskrit Vedas from thousands of years before Christ implied that matter could not be created, and that the universe had created itself [note: the Vedas say everything eternally exists, not that the universe created itself]...the Indians of the fifth century A.D. calculated the age of the earth as 4.3 billion years [continued in comments]” Huston Smith, A Tribute to Hinduism, page 58

The original inhabitants of South Asia were the hunter gatherers who may be the ancestors of the Adivasis. The Iranian farmers of the Elamo-Dravidian culture migrated to South Asia and mixed with many of these hunter gatherers creating the proto-Dravidian culture, which formed the Ancient South Indians (ASI). The Dravidians created the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) centered in modern Pakistan and also parts of modern India. The Indo-European migrations from the Eurasian Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) after the collapse of Indus Valley Civilization pushed the Dravidian society and culture to the south while many northern Dravidian also mixed with the invading Indo-Aryans creating the Ancient North Indians (ANI). The Indo-Europeans Aryans culturally appropriated the Dravidian history and religion, mixed it with their beliefs and created Vedic Hinduism. They placed themselves at the top of the Caste System while the dark skinned Dravidians and Adivasis were placed lower in the caste system. There was continuous gene flow in both directions during more egalitarian Buddhist period when the caste system was weakened but it was later reinforced by the Hindu Gupta Empire. Nearly all the Hindu gods and goddesses are dark skinned as they were originally worshipped by the dark skinned aboriginal Adivasis and later by the Dravidians.
@ayeshaosmani3361
@ayeshaosmani3361 6 лет назад
The Adivasis are the original inhabitants of South Asia while first the Dravidians and later Aryans migrated and settled the region. Clearly Indus Valley Civilisation was created by the Dravidians which later collapsed due to climatic changes. The Indo-Aryans migrated later and assmilated with some of the local people. Adivasis like the Munda people are clearly the aboriginal people of South Asia.

Nonetheless yes today there's no real proxy for ASSI but paniys are considered as close and it's no wonder because today no single group on earth is pure, everyone mixed and mixing is no sin right just process of evolution and surely after 500 years from now there will be single human race with every race mixing with other yeah so we shouldn't care much

You know, like a mule is different from a hinny. I believe neanderthals and homo sapiens had a similar dynamic, but I wonder if this is relevant for extant human populations.

E1b1b is also the haplogoup of the Horn of Africa (Ethiopians and Somalis), which is probably what the ancient Egyptians looked like. There could also have been some Nilo-Saharans/Nilotes as well (haplogroup A or B). Haplogroup J is foreign to Africa. But the African E1b1b is still dominant over the Middle Eastern/Greek J in North Africa. North Africans are mixed like any other group.

Tim Salter I will not deny the ancient nile valley Africans were mixed was inhabited by inhabitants who were mixed between Asiatics and Nilotics you can tell by their features if I had to guess many of them looked like how horn Africans of today looked. The Ancient Egyptians or as I like to say kemetian ppl were not a homogeneous ppl they had features ranging from light brown all the way to burnt crisp, I’m not one of the Afro centrics who will deny the admixture they were Afro Asiatic largely that’s still painting a broad stroke on a population which was not homogeneous.
@ReverendDrWells
@ReverendDrWells 6 лет назад
Tim Salter the point that I’m getting at is the field of Egyptology has been dominated still dominated by a Euro-centered paradigm which has often followed an agenda to obfuscate the African origin in presence of the ancient Nile valley Civilization even went as far as removing Egypt/Kemet from Africa and denying any African or negroid involvement to the development of that ancient African civilization in their obviously white supremacist minds there was no way a less intelligent, less civilized, less advanced race could accomplish or have any involvement in the development of such an advanced ancient civilization. What they were really looking to establish is to claim ancient Egypt for themselves as European/white/caucasoid civilization, have gone as far as saying the horn Africans and the ppl of Northern Africa although dark skin are still European/white simply disgusting, I guess the Greeks and Romans weren’t enough they had to take Africa too lol.
@ReverendDrWells
@ReverendDrWells 6 лет назад
Tim Salter you seem to know a thing or two about Haplotypes I’m obviously not as knowledgeable about it as you I will make it my due diligence to learn more about it cause you can’t study race/ethnicity/phenotypes without it. I believe the out of Africa theory is flawed although highly accepted as the consensus in the field of paleo anthropology, anthropology and archeology.

You didn't mention the Indus Valley civilisation, the migration of Dravidians from North to south. I wouldn't say that the Aryans attach northern India and the Dravidians moved to south in a blink of an eye. I guess , it was a gradual process, as immigration from Central Asia occurred, the original inhabitants of India moved towards south gradually. And the genetic changes occurred thousands of years of intermixing between the invaders, immigrant and original inhabitants. One more thing your map of linguistic is wrong as my language (Balti) in north east of Pakistan is considered tibeto Burmese not as Indo Aryan. Balti is the only Sino Tibetan language of Pakistan.
