As per sanskrit literature, Arya = noble man, Aryan = Of noble blood. People included were nobles/royals from Iran, Armenia, Afghan, Uzbek, Pakistan, Present north India, Kazakh, Turkmenistan, and surrounding areas. Term was mostly used like present day “Sir” as a form of respect.

As an Indian born in the US, I've never had any problems with the common ancestor to Indians, Iranians, and Europeans. Nor have I ever had any problems with Sanskrit being related to Persian or European languages. I think that a lot of contention surrounding these topics in India are more out of political dislike of Britain, and therefore Europe, rather than any honest scientific disputes.

Aryan is not a race but an adjective which comes from the Sanskrit word “Arya” which means Noble that’s why India was also called “Aryavarta” which means land of the nobles. It was the German Indologists who came up with fictional Aryan invasion theory to get claim on the rich Sanskrit heritage of Ancient India after noticing similarities between their languages with Sanskrit. When in reality the knowledge and science went from India to the Europe and influenced the languages and sciences there. But Ofcourse this would have meant accepting that India was far more advanced than the European countries in the ancient times so they distorted the history and made a story of Aryan people coming to India and displacing the native Dravadians here creating a North Indian South India divide which still exists to this date. Genetic studies have discarded this theory and also proved that people from South of India and from the North have exactly the same genetic ancestry.

I'm Polish and I have R1a1 and even its subclad L657 which is called an "Indian gene" by many. And that might explain why I was fascinated by Indian philosophy and religion since I was a teenager. I felt it close to my heart, although I was born and raised Catholic in Poland. When I heard a name: "Brahman" for the first time I had goosebumps. I also often wonder about another phenomena: there are beautiful girls in every ethnic group but I find Indo-Iranian women not jus pretty, I find them breathtaking gorgeous! I (Victoria Miroshnik) have talked about this in chapter 2 of our book (in collaboration with Dipak Basu) named Ethics, Morality, and Business to be published by Palgrave-Macmillan. I gave photos of some artifacts from the Kola district in Siberia about the ruins of a civilization that used to exist in Siberia before the last ice age. Tilak wrote in his books about the origin of the Aryans in Siberia, in Uttara Kuru, we think that was before the last Ice Age. When that civilization was ruined because of the Ice Age, the Aryans moved to India. After the Ice Age, the Aryans went back to Siberia ( Arkheim near Cheliabinsk in Sintastra-Petrovska valley).

I come from Assam province in Northeast India. Here ethnicities are even far more complex. This is a place where Indo Aryan and East Asian populations intermixed. In my own family, there are people who can pass off as a Thai or Shan, and also people who can pass off as an Iranian. There is a theory in our family that we were originally residents of Peshawar region in present day Pakistan in around 800-900AD, but with Islamic conquest, my ancestors fled east into the Gangetic plains and further into the Brahmaputra valley. While from my mother’s side, a prince of Yunnan province of China along with a few thousand followers came west across the mountains and settled in Brahmaputra valley. He and his descendants ruled the region from 1226 AD to 1826 AD. It was the most glorious period of our history. Unlike rest of India, Assam does not have a rigid caste system. There has been a lot of intermixing and hence if you look closely you’ll find all kind of traces in an Assamese DNA.

There is no such term as aryan in context to indian sub ccntinent.. "Arya" and "Anarya" were terms used for people with social and moral qualities and not a race. Just as the lie of dravidian being a race.. "dravida putra" was the term first used in the time of sankaracharya as geographical term "tra=three" became "dra" and "vid=river"... the land where three rivers meet was a geographical identity not racial.

My theory is that the original "Dravidians" would have resembled them somewhat and that our current ideas are very shaped by the events of the last 500 years or so.

A video on who was the original Indus Valley civilization would be amazing. One of those things that I feel like I should know about having studied ancient civilizations, yet I have literally no clue who they were or what their accomplishments were.

Would be interesting to see Masaman cover and get into Population genetics. Both older genetic material that groups left and and also how they relate to ethnic groups and populations today. Most of his video already deal with this in a way, since genetics is a already big part of the topics he makes videos on, but he is just scratching the surface right now and there is a lot more depth when it comes to how the populations we recognize today was formed. So yeah something i look forward to.

This is a sensitive topic for many Indians as well since many have their identity attached to greatness of noble Vedic culture and Aryan ancestry. One question that pops up: How does one account for the fact that Europeans and most other Indo-European speakers in West Asia DO NOT HAVE any (that is, zero or virtually zero) South Asian IVC-related admixture in their DNA? (IVC = Indus Valley)? Does it not clearly show the direction of migration? I think an Aryan "Migration" happened and not invasion - IVC was already on a decline when Aryans came to India. Sure there were some initial violent interactions between Aryans and early settlers people in IVC, but that was a norm between different tribes/races around the world at that time and shouldn't be judged by today's moral standards (Classic books such as Sapiens or Third Chimpanzee is a great read in this area). My admiration for "Maryada purushottam" Lord Rama or Vedas still stands tall despite Aryan migration. An example of invasion is what Putin is doing in Ukraine today which is totally immoral. I do understand there could be a political ramification of this where a certain section calls "descendants of these Aryan settlers" (read "upper castes") as "foreigners". Many fear this has the potential to divide India and I acknowledge that sentiment, however in today's connected globalized multicultural world, people of all cultures/castes/races are "melting", does it matter anymore? If one reads books such as Sapiens and The Third Chimpanzee, we would understand how homo sapiens around the world are all connected, and have continuously migrated & come together to bring about big changes in how we live since we were hunter gatherers. No ethnic group around the world can claim an “original” homeland anymore, including the aborigines in Andaman or in Papua New Guinea. People need to be educated about this and the one-ness of entire humanity and not fall into trap of "one group is more exclusive/superior than other". Ironically, isn't this what "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" is about which we Indians are so familiar with? We shouldn't judge history by today's moral standards. History should be accepted as it is without any shame - be it good or bad. Glory of our ancient past doesn't become any less, and I am still proud of our Aryan forefathers. In conclusion, I would like to say that choice of words do matter as it has the power to send subconscious messages when we hear them. The words "invasion / raiders / annihilators / barbarians" isn't the right one to use for reasons mentioned above - context and history should be taken into account as well. Historians have a moral responsibility to be sensitive to perceptions created by the words they use.

Thank you for putting so much time into this. I'm sure with the passage of time, we'll come to appreciate that we're all related, but that migrations have added dimensions and layers to identity. It's so trippy to watch these studies, because as an Afghan Pashtun residing in the west it's always shocking to see how my family and our people collectively look almost out of place in that region of the world as most of our people have blue or green eyes, blonde to very light hair, european type white skin. Not to say that's a good or bad thing, because frankly it makes no difference since we are all related anyway. But it is always fascinating to learn where that we were the product of mass migrations from various parts of the world. Because it gives us a view into what the future could possible look like and what other types of people are yet to be created that will look back at our current time with the same scope and be fascinated by our migrations and inter-mixing.

Of the Indo-Iranian Aryans, the Pashtuns are the most fascinating to me. They have their own mythical origins and scientifically concrete origins that show a vast multitude of ancient Eurasian steppe nomads migrating over thousands of years, amalgamating together, over running ancient Elamitic areas, at different time periods. From the Proto IE’s merging with the Scythians, to the Indo-Iranians merging with the remnants of the post Hellenestic remnants, and then more Scythians, followed by Tocharians, then followed by possibly Indo-Iranian Kitharite and Hepthalite Huns, the latter who were later Turkified with the Oghuz Migrations, later to be amalgamated as the Khalaj/Ghaljay/Ghilzai Indo Iranian speaking Pashtun/Afghan tribes to match their other Indo Iranian cousins. Between the two greater Pashtun lines, and a few outlyers, they still make up the largest tribal group in the world.

Actually modern day upper-middle caste Gujaratis have a huge Scythian and Zoroastrian component in their genetic make up . Many of them can easily pass for Middle Easterners, Greek-Italian types.
