What on Earth Happened to the Aryans?

Just who exactly were the “Aryans” and what happened to this enigmatic, yet supremely influential group of people? Although many people today use the term Aryan when referring to their ancestors of ancient history, the label is quite warped and distorted by modern politics, so I encourage you to look at this without any emotional attachment.
Today, we'll be discussing not only how the Aryans have impacted the ethnolinguistic groups of South Asia, but how other migrations, such as the Dravidians, Tibetans, Muslims, Europeans, Africans and others have shaped the landscape of all South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives. Thanks for watching!

We Iranians have always called our country Iran, this term comes from middle Persian "Iran shahr". Iran means the land of the Aryans, historically we Iranians have always called ourselves Aryan. The Parthian Iranians called Iran "Aryan Shahr", meaning Aryan Realm. The Persian Sasanians called Iran "Iran Shahr", also meaning Aryan Realm. We Iranians speak Persian, an Indo-European language. Aryan as an identity: What we can say is that only the Iranians have continuously identified themselves with the term Aryan (Modern Persian Ir, as in the Gen. Pl. Ir-an, "belonging to the Ir (Aryans)"). Aryan as a language family: This is the way in which most scientific books classify Aryan, i.e. as a group of people who speak Aryan languages. In this sense, you can start from Ossetia and the Iranians in Turkey and Iraq and go all the way down to India and up to Tajiks in Central Asia. All those people would be grouped as Aryans. We Iranians love our Tajik brothers and sisters in Central Asia, they are Iranian and they speak Persian. Actually the term Iranian is derived from Aryan. The Avesta clearly uses airya/airyan as an ethnic name (Vd. 1; Yt. 13.143-44, etc.), where it appears in expressions such as airyāfi; daiŋˊhāvō "Iranian lands, peoples", airyō.šayanəm "land inhabited by Iranians". In Armenian sources, the Parthians, Medes and Persians are collectively referred to as Aryans. Eudemus of Rhodes apud Damascius (Dubitationes et solutiones in Platonis Parmenidem 125 bis) refers to "the Magi and all those of Iranian (áreion) lineage". All this evidence shows that the name arya "Iranian" was a collective definition, denoting peoples (Geiger, pp. 167 f.; Schmitt, 1978, p. 31) who were aware of belonging to the one ethnic stock, speaking a common language, and having a religious tradition. In modern Iranian languages, the original self-identifier lives on in ethnic names like "Alans" and "Iron".Similarly, the name of Iran is the Persian word for land of the Aryans. And the word is used today as well. The Shah of Iran was also called Aryamehr ("Light of the Aryans").
@StateiraCyrus
@StateiraCyrus 3 года назад
Also, ancient descriptions of Aryans describe them as dark-haired (brown or black) and dark-eyed (brown or sometimes green) with light skin. Similarly, recent genetic studies about the proto-Indo-Europeans (Yamnaya people from the Pontic steppe) showed that they match these descriptions : The genetic basis of a number of physical features of the Yamnaya people were ascertained by the ancient DNA studies conducted by Haak et al. (2015), Wilde et al. (2014) and Mathieson et al. (2015): they were genetically tall (phenotypic height is determined by both genetics and environmental factors), overwhelmingly dark-eyed (brown), dark-haired and had a skin colour that was moderately light, though somewhat darker than that of the average modern European. Interestingly, several recent linguists and geneticists, such as Reich et al. 2018, Wang et al. 2018, Kristiansen 2018,… suggest that the proto-Indo-European Yamnaya may have had a predecessor in modern-day Iran (likely northern Iran), where "proto-proto-Indo-European" was spoken. → This gives the meaning of Iran a much more heavy meaning. From the Darius the Great's Inscription in Naqshe-e-Rostam in Iran/Persia : " I am Darius, the great king, the king of kings The king of many countries and many people The king of this expansive land, The son of Wishtaspa of Achaemenid, Persian, the son of a Persian, 'Aryan', from the Aryan race "
@StateiraCyrus
@StateiraCyrus 3 года назад
@@koolar1528 No, we have never had Indian culture in Iran/Persia, and the Indians have never ruled Iran, no Indian king has ruled Iran, and there have been no Indian tribes in Iran. Aso, Persian and Indian cultures are different. And Avestan is not is a daughter language of Sanskrit, Avestan is an Iranian language. And both Avestan and Sanskrit are a branch of the Indo-Iranian languages within the Indo-European family. Its immediate ancestor was the Proto-Iranian language, a sister language to the Proto-Indo-Aryan language, with both having developed from the earlier Proto-Indo-Iranian. As such, Old Avestan is quite close in grammar and lexicon to Vedic Sanskrit, the oldest preserved Indo-Aryan language.

As per sanskrit literature, Arya = noble man, Aryan = Of noble blood. People included were nobles/royals from Iran, Armenia, Afghan, Uzbek, Pakistan, Present north India, Kazakh, Turkmenistan, and surrounding areas. Term was mostly used like present day “Sir” as a form of respect.
@prxnv
@prxnv Год назад
no that isn't what it means... arya means "kinsman" and is derived from proto indo european "heryo"... it's cognates are hero aristocrat and eros in the west. For example in the rigveda, whenever "arya" is used, it's to refer to bharata (the clan that composed the veda), dasyu to the other 6 closely related sister tribes, whereas mleccha refers to meluha (indus valley people) and rakshasa to aboriginals. Over time, because bharata tribesmen became the nobility and administrative class (Brahmins and Kayasthas later on) of the subsequent settled civilizations and feudal societies of northern india, arya became synonymous with nobility. By the late vedic period, Uzbek Kazakh and Turkmen were nowhere near Central Asia, and people like Afghans Armenians and Iranians were considered Dasyu and looked down upon by the arya descendants inside India (exceptions of asvakans gandharans and dardics)

No, it was mostly and ethnic designator for the Aryans who conquered and ruled over India. Due to Aryans making up the vast majority of the nobility for such a long time, their ethnic name became the word for Nobleman. Like how Slave became the generic word for enslaved people because the most prominent group being enslaved were Slavs from eastern Europe. Aryan is not a race but an adjective which comes from the Sanskrit word “Arya” which means Noble that’s why India was also called “Aryavarta” which means land of the nobles. It was the German Indologists who came up with fictional Aryan invasion theory to get claim on the rich Sanskrit heritage of Ancient India after noticing similarities between their languages with Sanskrit. When in reality the knowledge and science went from India to the Europe and influenced the languages and sciences there. But Ofcourse this would have meant accepting that India was far more advanced than the European countries in the ancient times so they distorted the history and made a story of Aryan people coming to India and displacing the native Dravadians here creating a North Indian South India divide which still exists to this date. Genetic studies have discarded this theory and also proved that people from South of India and from the North have exactly the same genetic ancestry.

Agreed the culture of North Indians is similar to that of Eastern Europeans. The North Indians are very different to southern ones. It would make sense as the Persian Empire was also invaded by Romans many times until Persias fall. Unfortunately we don’t know everything since any empire that invaded foreign lands like the Mongols and English would burn the libraries and documents with all this information smh

I'm Polish and I have R1a1 and even its subclad L657 which is called an "Indian gene" by many. And that might explain why I was fascinated by Indian philosophy and religion since I was a teenager. I felt it close to my heart, although I was born and raised Catholic in Poland. When I heard a name: "Brahman" for the first time I had goosebumps. I also often wonder about another phenomena: there are beautiful girls in every ethnic group but I find Indo-Iranian women not jus pretty, I find them breathtaking gorgeous! They literally "take my breat away" :). So, I wonder if that genetic component (10% of my DNA makeup) is influencing my esthetics... :) or is it something else altogether? Anyway, thank you for your videos! You are one of the most knowledgeable and objective people I came across on the internet.

I (Victoria Miroshnik) have talked about this in chapter 2 of our book (in collaboration with Dipak Basu) named Ethics, Morality, and Business to be published by Palgrave-Macmillan. I gave photos of some artifacts from the Kola district in Siberia about the ruins of a civilization that used to exist in Siberia before the last ice age. Tilak wrote in his books about the origin of the Aryans in Siberia, in Uttara Kuru, we think that was before the last Ice Age. When that civilization was ruined because of the Ice Age, the Aryans moved to India. After the Ice Age, the Aryans went back to Siberia ( Arkheim near Cheliabinsk in Sintastra-Petrovska valley).

I come from Assam province in Northeast India. Here ethnicities are even far more complex. This is a place where Indo Aryan and East Asian populations intermixed. In my own family, there are people who can pass off as a Thai or Shan, and also people who can pass off as an Iranian. There is a theory in our family that we were originally residents of Peshawar region in present day Pakistan in around 800-900AD, but with Islamic conquest, my ancestors fled east into the Gangetic plains and further into the Brahmaputra valley. While from my mother’s side, a prince of Yunnan province of China along with a few thousand followers came west across the mountains and settled in Brahmaputra valley. He and his descendants ruled the region from 1226 AD to 1826 AD. It was the most glorious period of our history. Unlike rest of India, Assam does not have a rigid caste system. There has been a lot of intermixing and hence if you look closely you’ll find all kind of traces in an Assamese DNA.

Just as the lie of dravidian being a race.. Great video! It would be very difficult to get any data but have you done any research or do you have any knowledge of the people of North Sentinel Island and the tribal people of the Andaman Islands? My theory is that the original "Dravidians" would have resembled them somewhat and that our current ideas are very shaped by the events of the last 500 years or so.
@prxnv
@prxnv Год назад
The "Dravidians" originally came from western eurasia, and could've been related to the ancient Elamites (they have the same etymological root word for "father", and usually tribes that have the same word for father tend to be related linguistically). They also tend to have caucasoid skull shape, whereas the andamanese natives have the australoid skull shape, so that implies that the two races have very different origins. The dravidians also were agro-pastoralists and have been shown to be related to brahui speakers in baluchistan so its very likely that the dravidians and indus valley people (meluha in elamite/sumerian, they were the original mlecchas in rigveda) were related and both came from the west. aboriginals have been in india MUCH befre dravidian. so u may ask why do dravidians have dark skin and aboriginal like facial feaures? well thats simply cuz living in high uv exposure and very humid areas makes ur skin darker and nose wider over many many generations. Genetic affinity is tainted by this kind of stuff which is why genotype analysis isn't enough to tell the origins of dravidians.

The divide in development is purely due to post colonial regressive politics. While the south gave rise to more egalitarian politics, the North played caste politics, which to this day divides the groups drastically. For instance, governments in Kerala and Tamil Nadu pushed for more education. This is purely due to the demographics. These states have predominantly lower caste citizens and therefore always voted for nativist parties that promoted social improvements. In turn, education helped develop a better society. Well this is my take. There may be other reasons too. Because historically I am not sure if there has been a period where such a huge developmental division has existed between the northern and southern kingdoms.

This is a sensitive topic for many Indians as well since many have their identity attached to greatness of noble Vedic culture and Aryan ancestry. One question that pops up: How does one account for the fact that Europeans and most other Indo-European speakers in West Asia DO NOT HAVE any (that is, zero or virtually zero) South Asian IVC-related admixture in their DNA? (IVC = Indus Valley)? Does it not clearly show the direction of migration? I think an Aryan "Migration" happened and not invasion - IVC was already on a decline when Aryans came to India. Sure there were some initial violent interactions between Aryans and early settlers people in IVC, but that was a norm between different tribes/races around the world at that time and shouldn't be judged by today's moral standards (Classic books such as Sapiens or Third Chimpanzee is a great read in this area). My admiration for "Maryada purushottam" Lord Rama or Vedas still stands tall despite Aryan migration. An example of invasion is what Putin is doing in Ukraine today which is totally immoral. I do understand there could be a political ramification of this where a certain section calls "descendants of these Aryan settlers" (read "upper castes") as "foreigners". Many fear this has the potential to divide India and I acknowledge that sentiment, however in today's connected globalized multicultural world, people of all cultures/castes/races are "melting", does it matter anymore? If one reads books such as Sapiens and The Third Chimpanzee, we would understand how homo sapiens around the world are all connected, and have continuously migrated & come together to bring about big changes in how we live since we were hunter gatherers. No ethnic group around the world can claim an “original” homeland anymore, including the aborigines in Andaman or in Papua New Guinea. People need to be educated about this and the one-ness of entire humanity and not fall into trap of "one group is more exclusive/superior than other". Ironically, isn't this what "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" is about which we Indians are so familiar with? We shouldn't judge history by today's moral standards. History should be accepted as it is without any shame - be it good or bad. Glory of our ancient past doesn't become any less, and I am still proud of our Aryan forefathers. In conclusion, I would like to say that choice of words do matter as it has the power to send subconscious messages when we hear them. The words "invasion / raiders / annihilators / barbarians" isn't the right one to use for reasons mentioned above - context and history should be taken into account as well. Historians have a moral responsibility to be sensitive to perceptions created by the words they use.

It is a great loss to our cultural heritage that we will never know what the original Vedda language was. We could try to reconstruct it by studying the Andamanese languages, which I suppose are the closest to what the "aboriginal" Veddas spoke. But even if we did that, I suppose the modern Veddas would not be willing to speak it, because that would alienate them from the "mainstream" Indians with whom they have been trying to integrate. While ideally every nation should have its own language (I even would like to see Americans have a separate Germanic language, since not all of us are English), I realize how impractical that would be.
@barcak1912
@barcak1912 4 года назад
@@SeasideDetective2 some of your information are wrong, Vedda language is not related to Andamanese languages. Andamanese languagea are more related to Austronesian and west Papuan languages. Search for it, it's very interesting.
@SeasideDetective2
@SeasideDetective2 4 года назад
@@barcak1912 When I say "the Vedda language," I don't mean the language they actually speak, but their ABORIGINAL language, which we will never know. I imagine if the Vedda ever embarked on a hardcore nationalist crusade and demanded their "own" separate language, they'd probably create a new one using one of the Andamanese languages as a base, if only to advertise their Adivasi and non-Aryan and non-Dravidian heritage. There are some English-speaking Americans who have proposed making American English a separate language by either removing all the French and Latin words transmitted by British English and replacing them with Germanic coinages or just changing the spelling of American English words so that the British wouldn't recognize them. So the notion is not completely far-fetched.

@evansdrad The celtic nationalist what are you on about? You're saying hitler is stupid and a lunatic because he wanted to "kill" all slavs? Rubbish If that was the case, then why did the German army and the SS accepted and recruited peoples from Eastern Europe during operation barbarossa? They joined willingly; latvians, Estonians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, even Russians. Not to mention Asians, Muslims, Arabs, and even blacks If hitler was such an evil man why did these peoples fight in the German military? And don't use the dumb argument, "oh he let then joinedcuz he needed man power" That's non sense Hitler didn't have racial hatred against anyone Hitler even ler 150k Jews serve in the German military. 20 Jews earned the highest medal in the German military Surely if he was an evil racist he wouldn't of let Jews join the army and surely he wouldn't have given them medals On the other hand, have you looked at The UK? USA? The UK was the biggest empire ever at that time. Those who said hitler wanted to "take over the world", are themselves guilty of that as well. The UK had colonies in North America, Asia, the middle East, Africa, Oceania Winston Churchill admittedly said that he hates indians and even said that "they're a beastly people with a beastly religion" not only that, when he also caused a famine in India in 1943, one of his government officials told them the number of indians that have died, his reply was, "did Ghandi died yet" Not only that He even said he would be in favor of gassing Kurdish people It really disgusts me that people praise him Churchill is not even held responsible for the famine in India and the fire bombings in germany He bombed german cities and villigaes at night, bombed civilians, not military factories etc That's a bloody war crime Yet He wasn't tried at the nuremburg trial and is not held responsible. You should think before you speak before you spout non sense

One little comment tho; between 4:40 to 7:50; -- one migration pattern into South Asia is missing, which is Turkic-Mongolic people from North/Central Asia through Khorasan/modern Afghanistan. The word Aryan comes from the Sanskrit word Arya (aka arjo), which means noble men. Aryan has nothing to do with Europeans or Iranians.

@Khushal Singh Nope. The Rig Veda was written in India by the people of the Aryavarta, who were descendants of a mix of Indus peripheral people and Aryans. The Indus peripheral people may have given them an oral account of the existence of Saraswati. So with that you cant say Rig is at 2000 BC. Also the vedic people did not migrate out as per scientific consensus. Aryans migrated in. OIT does not have enough peer reviewed papers supporting it.

Even if the celts had made hinduism in Europe in early French I would have ended up following it. It is so because I love the underlying philosophy of karma and dharma implicit in it. Also because it is a tolerant blend mix of Aryan, tribal and indiginous aboriginal traditions, including my own.

@Khushal Singh Man the Sinauli find(2100bc) has solid wheels not spoked wheels. It was an oxen pulled cart. Not a chariot. Also the Dhamiabad bronze figure has the same problem. It's so trippy to watch these studies, because as an Afghan Pashtun residing in the west it's always shocking to see how my family and our people collectively look almost out of place in that region of the world as most of our people have blue or green eyes, blonde to very light hair, european type white skin. Not to say that's a good or bad thing, because frankly it makes no difference since we are all related anyway. But it is always fascinating to learn where that we were the product of mass migrations from various parts of the world. Because it gives us a view into what the future could possible look like and what other types of people are yet to be created that will look back at our current time with the same scope and be fascinated by our migrations and inter-mixing.

Of the Indo-Iranian Aryans, the Pashtuns are the most fascinating to me. They have their own mythical origins and scientifically concrete origins that show a vast multitude of ancient Eurasian steppe nomads migrating over thousands of years, amalgamating together, over running ancient Elamitic areas, at different time periods. From the Proto IE’s merging with the Scythians, to the Indo-Iranians merging with the remnants of the post Hellenestic remnants, and then more Scythians, followed by Tocharians, then followed by possibly Indo-Iranian Kitharite and Hepthalite Huns, the latter who were later Turkified with the Oghuz Migrations, later to be amalgamated as the Khalaj/Ghaljay/Ghilzai Indo Iranian speaking Pashtun/Afghan tribes to match their other Indo Iranian cousins. Between the two greater Pashtun lines, and a few outlyers, they still make up the largest tribal group in the world.

Subby Pashtuns are actually the purest "Aryans" who still exist. Compared to their Persian and North Indian counterparts, they didn‘t heavily intermixed. We are the direct descendants of the ancient Scythians who fled from their Central Asian steppes to the eastern Iranian plateau due to Turkic and Mongol invasions. But unfortunately they followed us all the way down. Btw I am a Ghilzai :)

Danyal, there is no such thing as a “Pure Race.” All Afghan nationals and ethnic Afghans (Pakhtuns) are of mixed origins. Even today they are mixing with neighboring people. The Pakistan side with Punjabis and others, and the Afghan side with Tajiks, Uzbeks, Turkics, and even the Mongolian Hazara. The Jaghuri in Ghazni are Hazaras that won favor with the Mohammedzais and even joined military ranks before the Soviet invasion. When Sher Ali Khan pushed Abdur Rahman Khan up north, a garrison of his men stayed in Bukhara and never came back. Afghan patriarchal societies can contain men who marry 3-4 wives, some of which have no relation to their own tribe. Its hard to record their marriage activity because many of these men are hostile to a census that wants to know information about their women. Lets not forget the Nuristani, of whom many now speak Pashto and are ardent Muslims. Abdur Rahman Khan permanently settled these non Muslim mountain folk on their side of the British installed Durand line border. These are just some of many examples of intermixing.
@ateyo7554
@ateyo7554 4 года назад
Debasis kumar , absolutely wrong about the origin of Pakhtuns/Pashtuns/Afghans. Pashto is an Eastern Iranian language, with its closest relatives Mountain Tajiks, alongside other Eastern Khotanese, and Ossetian. It is not a Semitic language.

@User572 I do not believe in the caste system either. But the caste system's original goal was to stop race mixing by the highly advanced Vedic Aryans with the dark native Indian aboriginals . Originally the Aryans would render the death sentence to any fellow Aryan who mixed blood with an aboriginal . After they mixed with the aboriginals Indian civilisation went into the gutter like it's today, a nice third world dump.
@princepouncer2729
@princepouncer2729 2 года назад
@User572 Wait a minute! The caste system DID start from Hinduism. Hinduism was invented BY outsider northerner Aryans. So the Vedic Aryans did start the caste system as a form of racial separation. What we call "Hinduism" was/ is an outside thought/ philosophy/ NOT native to India, Pakistan , etc. One branch of Aryans went into Europe, the other into Iran and one into India/ Pakistan area. The ancient Viking, Germanic and Iranian and Greek "religions" are 80% similar to Hinduism past/ present
@princepouncer2729

@User572 You are correct. The populations found more in the northern / northwestern regions of India are clearly Caucasians. But all Caucasians have a certain amount of aboriginal / Austroloid admix. such as central, southern , northern Europeans, Arabs, Iranians, as well as Indians. So to state that one particular type of Caucasian group is the standard Caucasian compared to the rest is exactly like claiming that only green coloured Porches or green coloured BMW's are more "Porche" or more "BMW" than one that's not. All BMW's or Porches are of the same make regardless of colour. Caucasians come in all colours ( brown, olive dark brown, white, etc) but the bone/ skeletal structure is the "same" make with negligible differences.
