Look, the GW primer is good and all but using a grey Rustolium is fine--actually more than fine. The fact that there is even a discussion or debate when its that big of a $ difference really is telling. I see no reason to blow money on primer that is qualitatively no significant difference. Honestly when I've been painting these models for 30+ years and there are through the years debates on things that make a difference. These primers are not one of them. Spend your hard earned money on something more significant like the actual paint.

I think the way to go is to use the Rustolium on things like bases, movement trays, terrain and maybe shields. Maybe even large units stick with the cheap options and then use the premium stuff for your premium troops.

Zenithal highlighting is definitely the way to go, with black and white, and use a wet palette and thin your paints to allow the shadows and highlights show through.
@Tablenauts

Love zenithal! I use a wet palette but I'm not 100% sure I'm using it right. I'm still trying to convince Doolin to try it lol.

Thank you for the video! The cost of high quality primers has held me back from painting minis. I am going to give the cheaper primer a go just so can get my foot in the door to get some mini painting experience. 🙂

I've seen a few comparisons of primers from miniature painters online. Of the canned paints, Citadel had the closest to airbrush. The paints you find in the hardware store just put too thick of a coat to be considered for most miniatures. Airbrush is still the best option, if you can justify the investment.
@hiddenleaf414
@hiddenleaf414 2 года назад
After the price of 5 citadel cans you could have just bought airbrush and compressor.
@zinetx
@zinetx 9 месяцев назад
Lol there are some airbrush guns (without compressor) for the price of one citadel can. If you save the money of 3 citadel cans you can buy a good airbrush with a compact compressor.
@PESKII

Subbed. Great advice. I'll get the miniature specific primer to get the zenithal highlights. I haven't used them before and my concern would be covering up details by mistake.

I love the rustoleum stuff for normal painting, but if you use contrast paints at all, you almost have to have Grey Seer or Wraith Bone from Citadel for it to look right.

What is the best recommendation to store painted minis? do you keep them in the game box? I really wouldn''t know how to do it, but would need to figure it out before I even could start painting. Still scared to do that, though
@Tablenauts
@Tablenauts 5 месяцев назад
Really depends! I’d say most people just store them in the box. Smart to use a bit of varnish on them to protect them. I store some in the box and some in a bit more proud of in a display. Just depends :)

Did a double-take to make sure this was indeed a Tablenauts video. Kind of off topic for the video, but removing mould lines is also important on your bigger projects.

Ive found the paint+primer is a bit rough, its kind of satin, the straight up rustoleum 2x primer is a much more matte finish

Very informative video. Thank you!!!! I did a test of Citadel Chaos Black against Krylon FUSION ALL-IN-ONE Matte Black Spray Paint and reached the exact conclusion you did. Compared to Citadel I found the Krylon to be not as black, not as matte, and not as thin. The Krylon would be OK for test minis but if I'm going to spend a lot of time painting a mini I'll stick with the better quality hobby spray paints (unless I get an airbrush - still deciding on that).

My buddy who is heavy into painting minis highly recommends the rustoleum sandable primer. So all the products I’ve purchased for painting have been what he recommends. Personally I don’t know how it works because all of my paint supplies are collecting dust, but his minis look AMAZING, have won contests, and he has taught painting for beginners classes at cons.

Yeah it's similarly expensive here in Australia. It's still less than citadel but at that point I don't even think it's worth cheaping out.

Notice the speckling with the rustoleum. That can be terrible when you use contrasts for even at the finish product. I use to use cheaper cans but as you get better at painting you realize how bad they look and how hard they are to correct.

The Rustoleum may be a little thick but at 1/3rd the price of many other products, it’s what I recommend. Now, I paint game pieces, nothing for display or competition. I’d assume if you’re at the point of painting those types of models you’re aware of the limitations and prepared to use an airbrush anyway.

I can recommend MAXI COLOR Paint Primer…. I’m in the UK. You can pick it up from a hardware store, I personally picked it up from Robert Dyas. £6.99 The spray can is really good, hardly ever gets issues, or clogged up like the army, painter primers. Constantly getting clogged up and then simply stop working, even though you can feel that there is paint left in the can. This primer comes out a little bit wet looking… The coverage isn’t instantly Matte looking as the army painter. But give it 5 mins minutes, and the miniature is good to go. And at half the price !

As much as I hate to say it the citadel spray primer is worth it. It’s way more than it should be but damn it’s super clean and cover so good it’s crazy. I tried to use rustoleum instead and was fine with it but when I tried citadel I hated the fact I immediately was like yup I guess I’m buying citadel from now on

I never use a spray primer: I don't like the waste involved - I prefer to paint minis rather than the box behind them. :P I've become skilled at manually priming without adding a thick covering. I even primed the giant Cthulhu from the Death May Die Kickstarter by hand - yes it took ages, but I listened to videos at the same time, so it wasn't too bad.
@Tablenauts
@Tablenauts 3 года назад
Yikes, priming that behemoth by hand sounds rooooough. Good on you though! I enjoy spray priming for the speed, but I've never really tried brush primer.
@bobsteel1981
@bobsteel1981 3 года назад
@@Tablenauts Brush primer isn't too bad: you just have to be careful not to leave thick sections of paint. If you keep brushing over an area to remove excess paint it can leave a very fine covering, hiding no details. And aye it did take some time, but using a very large vehicle brush made it not too bad. :)

That rustoleum white primer is shit. It has something in it that makes it so acrylic dosen't stick to the model. It repels the paint so you have to do multiple coats. Its not worth the lower price.
