Please don't get offended by that officer. That is unfortunately one of the less-educated and outdated mindsets that we have here in Malaysia. Islam never required non-fasters to respect the fasters by "not eating" in front of them. And as you can see, the vendors were certainly fine with that. You will meet these two types of people but you will certainly meet more of the accepting ones since we are still transitioning towards that.

@@benfishermin No he was obeying the law. It is an Islamic rule that if something is not right and everyone remains indifferent then it suffices that at least one person objects or the whole community will suffer. This is divine law. To put it simply the people had caused an imbalance and the one who objected re established the balance. He has more merit than all the people put together. So don't you worry about him. What you need to understand is it requires someone with anger to do this. Everyone else is compromised by niceness.

Finally you're at a real Bazaar Ramadan, as a foreigner you can eat and drink but not in front of everybody just be a bit more discreet find little hidden alley ways they wont bother you. Paru are cow lungs you might want to try, you can also find tripe (perut) if you want. You wont find cow lungs in America because America banned all lungs (its some antiquated law) anyways if you get it deep fried it might be crispy and chewy. Malaysian sambals are generally sweet from less sweet to very sweet, you would want Indonesian sambals they usually don't use sugar. That ayam geprek earlier with Indonesian sambal should have been your pick. You can sort of tell because if you cook sambal with sugar the dark bright red colors would pop out , without sugar sambals are a lot more dull colored but more spicy. That said most of the Indonesian workers don't really speak English very well or at all that would be your challenge. I understand the sugar restrictions due to health but soy is it because of gluten? Malaysian soy sauce does contain gluten but its different from Thai soy sauce in terms of flavor. The green cake earlier is Kuih bakar from pandan and lots of sugar its is recommended but not if you have problems with sugar. I dare say that a dozen donut is equal to 3 dozen traditional dessert in terms of sweetness. The Syrian dessert " Kunafah" is also super sweet. probably sweeter than them donuts.

Since you have some kind of food allergy, I strongly recommend you reach out to local people. Most of our food has salt-sugar combination and what specifically you are allergic to. On a spiciness level, typically Malaysian food is less spicy than Indonesia and Thailand. Possibly your tolerance to spicy food is higher than usual caucasian. nasi goreng is fried rice. 'nasi' is rice, 'goreng' is fried. the name's similar because the language's almost similar. the kind of nasi goreng are what differentiate where it came from. nasi goreng from korea taste differentlly. same with fried rice from uk. no country owns fried rice. it's hard to get a true origin of one's food especially from this region. but it's definitely not shwarma. your best bet would be kueh. unfortunately is mostly sweet because it's desserts. or dish like laksa, nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi lemak forcing anyone who's not fasting to not eat around you is just dumb. me as a muslim think so.

@@benfishermin Although it certainly wasn't your fault, I think what triggered them was maybe the way you were chomping on your food with gusto. Ha ha. But seriously, even the food sellers did not mind you eating in front of them because they asked, and you told them you were not fasting. The RELA personnel (aka People's Volunteer Corps) have a record of 'power tripping' (new phrase for me, thanks) and as they were themselves probably fasting at the time, must've exacerbated their crankiness. Ironically, the people who have to prepare food are far more tolerant than others. Fyi, at the time you were there, 5pm or so, was about 2.5 hours away from break fast. Can you tell me where you were staying at the time - you said it was near to the Kampung Bahru food market. food in Malaysia if you want spicy, you have to eat at home or in a restaurant, you can ask for spicy or less spicy. In general, food vendors at stalls do not cook very spicy food because they know that not everyone can tolerate spicy food. The truth is that good food must be balanced, not too spicy and sweet. The important thing is that we want to feel the deliciousness of the food and we don't want the spiciness. For me, I like spicy and a little sweet, salty and a little sour. that's balanced food for me.

Hello Ben, I m watching your videos since the more recent Jomtien condo time. Now i m up to date and go back to the Bali ones (very helpful because i go there for the first time soon). With some stuff in your videos i can identify myself pretty much, i like what you said about ur parents in the end. I m thinking about to move to Thailand for 6-8 months a year (have to be 4 months in my country because of my business) and could luckily afford to live there now on around €1.5K a month. But thats without any "retirement money plan". Do you put money into ETFs or have something like a house for later? I can´t imagine that the minimum government retirement money in the USA is much higher than in Germany. Maybe more of the budget and money stuff would be interesting for other people too.....just saying what comes into my mind when i watch your videos. Cool Videos, looking forward for more Thailand stuff!!! BTW as long as money is tight you could try to cut it down on the herb. I got solid thai outdoor herb from the locals last year for not even 20thb a g. 4 different strains which i only vaped and it was definitly ok......sure high end indoor is better but in comparison to the price the oldschool Thai herb is fine in my opinion as a guy who usually has nice organic homegrow.

I’m glad you were able to relate with my videos, glad you enjoy them. Honestly I have no retirement at all sadly, need to build something strong and earn/save. Hopefully RU-vid will turn into something big 😁 you’re right the weed is a high expense for the budget I’m on, I started to stick with 100-150thb per g stuff which is pretty cheap! Now in Malaysia of course not smoking which is very helpful. And now when I am back in Thailand my tolerance is so low I barely need much to get buzzing. Gonna have a nice long break again too which will help further. Good luck with your moving plans 🙌

most dishes in southeast asia hv sugar in it… we hv sweet tooth… our sambal is not as spicy as indonesian one… not sure abt thai sambal… i always feel indonesian sambal has more kick… malaysian sambal still gd for me though… i guess ur spice tolerance quite high… as some western tourist finds it too spicy.. so it must be individual standard.. bro.. use ur iphone camera to translate…. nasi goreng is fried rice in english.. we malaysian do fry our rice though.. thus where our fried rice or nasi goreng (in malay language) came frm.. indonesia patented the name nasi goreng .. but still our version of nasi goreng is diff than indonesian one… malay cuisines do get influenced frm thai.. chinese n indian… because there are malaysians of chinese.. indian n thai origin… daging means meat.. daging lembu is beef.. daging kambing is mutton… most places sell goat meat instead of sheep…

Interesting, I did see some other comments about Indonesian using no sugar, or very little, so balance must lean more toward spicy, I think for me would be better! Since I can’t have soy, sugar, gluten - I’m mostly eating curries and either cabbage or green veggies. It’s pretty limited but at least I can eat out every day and still feel good. And it makes it easy to stay in shape since I can’t have fried foods or even rice

@@benfishermin yup.. indonesian sambal is nicer.. stallls arnd kampung bahru do hv indonesian as their cook… u can try their dishes… hv u tried tosai (dosay)… it’s a south indian fermented indian pancake… served with dhal n coconut chutney… about tosai.. Rich in carbohydrates, protein, and fiber, Thosai is a healthy choice that's also low in fat. The calorie content of thosai depends on the ingredients used and the cooking method. A typical thosai made with white flour and water has about 150 calories per serving.

@@eerievon2208that sounds delicious! But with my gut problem I can’t have flour/gluten and also can’t have legumes (lentil, chickpea). So much of the food I must avoid sadly that’s really why I eat so much curry and veggies

In Malaysia, the fasting start from Subuh (around 6am plus minus) until Maghrib (around 7.15pm plus minus) every day in Ramadhan month. Subuh is few minutes before sunrise and Maghrib is few minutes after sunset, it might vary depends on your location and altitude. Technically, we in Malaysia fasting around 13hours per day. For country that having Ramadhan during summer, their fasting duration would be longer. For those having Ramadhan during winter, they would fasting only for a little of time. We did not fasting whole day for the whole month 😊

I’d say I get enough electrolytes, especially sodium from the food in general, and some trace amounts from 5L mineral water each day. I also supplement with magnesium.
