Reason Studios have just released their new subscription service called Reason +. I think it's awesome, but there's also been a lot of negativity from the Reason community. 🤬 In this video, we try and make sense of the criticism and explore Reason + for the first time.

If Reason Studios as a company disappeared tomorrow, I would be happy to know they left us their best iteration of the Reason daw. As long as I can use it into the future I would be happy. I hope it’s future proof for a long time to come. Just like the discontinued classic Roland, Yamaha, Korg etc.. hardware synths/gear of the past, it’s up to us as consumers to look after our software gear. If that means holding onto and looking after an older computer to keep reason working so be it. If it all goes subscription in the coming years and companies go bust in the future, there won’t be any software to own.
@matthewstuartnz

That’s a very interesting point. I really like this perspective. Do you think it’s practical people keeping older machines for older software though?
@JamesBermingham
@JamesBermingham 3 года назад
@@matthewstuartnz it’s a must. Up to the individual to be organised and practice good house keeping when it comes to software, VSTs and DAWS. If looked after, old PCs/MACs with older operating systems running older or discontinued versions of software (eg Rebirth) could be precious in the future. Treat your older computers like a Roland Juno or Jupiter 🎹👍✊😊

I have been holding out for Reason to improve the DAW for 4 years now. And this was a slap in the face. I do not care about more sound packs or rack extensions. i'm happy with all the gear I have. I just need the mixer and sequencer to be more organized and I need work flow improvements. My projects typically have 50 tracks or more and the Rack becomes a real mess and hard to navigate with that many synths and channels. I have sent reason many emails but feel I have been ignored. Even auto save is a basic function reason lacks.

@@matthewstuartnz Thanks David! I have used or looked at most DAW's and did some serious time in Cubase, Studio one and for live orientated things Ableton, But there was a deal on Reason 10 couple of years ago and since than i really got a bit hooked on it. ( for makin my own jams, mixing for someone else i would prefer PT or similar) I do get tempted to now and then to install another DAW, but i always get a cramped feeling how they look and feel... Reason somehow really fits nice on my dual monitor setup. Also like the sequencer and working with midi feels really tight and the 'Players' i love also. Sample content and some available Refills also and some RE effects like the ColoringEQ and RX950, ...ohw yea! and Combinator patches can be very cool.. The shop has some good things, like the month trail and if you want to trail it some more you take the cheap subscription.. and rent to own. I'm leaving out a bunch probably but i don't want to make to long text...

I have used it but after a few days I opted out. Poor quality GUI when scaling, inability to send midi out from one track to another and lastly the Rack when used in another DAW is just too small to read without getting up close to the monitor (Mine is scaled to 150%). If those three problems were resolved I would be a + user immediately. At about 66 Cents a day its an absolute winner.

My thoughts as a Reason User since v3..(and I will reiterate points I've made via comments on other videos) I've enjoyed using it for many years, despite waiting for RS Devs to implement vast improvements to the DAWs functionality. However, with the news of this new subscription model that I have 0 interest in, I bought a Reaper license and started using it this weekend. (..and enjoying it!) I will continue to use Reason as a Plug-in exclusively, but I think the vision for Reason DAW by RS is in total opposition to it's current users. Frankly I am tired of playing the waiting game, and with this latest announcement, I expect the waiting will be in vain. The writing is on a LARGE BILLBOARD that RS will eliminate the perpetual license eventually. This move is evident by the fact they've already eliminated any way of purchasing/upgrading to Reason Suite. I predict they will offer features exclusively to subscribers to get perpetual license holders to transition. Personally, I will never subscribe to Reason+ because I don't agree with this model in relation to just having access to music creation software. Sure this is not all the subscription model offers, but I think the way they've presented this leaves perpetual license holders in a conundrum. New users get to use Reason with access to ALL RS REs and sound packs for $19.99/month. When RS came up with this price point I am sure the rental of Reason is included with that price. But what if I own Reason, but want to have access to ALL the REs and sound packs as well? Why isn't there a different price for those who own Reason? This is what I mean. Perpetual license holders are seemingly excluded from RSs plans lately. It's disrespectful but I don't take it personal. Apple Silicon is here, and I am already using the Beta to the optimized version of Reaper. The license I purchased was only $60. I bring up the price to that software because I've paid $129/update since v6.5 (and $250...I think for the Suite), yet Cockos seems to "keep up" a little better than RS with the implementation of features and compatibility. And I can install Reaper on as many computers I own. Whereas, RS has also stopped supporting the license dongle without addressing Authorizations properly. It's this kind of laissez-faire attitude that just compounds the resentment with an announcement like this. It is like the focus is totally about the $$$ while ignoring faithful users, which comes off as arrogance. But as stated on a different video, RSs have demonstrated too many times the birds in the bush are worth more than the ones in the hand.
@matthewstuartnz
@matthewstuartnz 3 года назад
I appreciate you well thought out points. They've said they will continue offering a perpetual license so I hope they don't change their mind. But I think you're right, Reason 12 will really demonstrate whether they actually care about the DAW. And yea, the pricing structure is difficult. I'm not really sure how they could do it better, but either way it feels like users who have spent thousands of dollars over the years to buy the software lose out.

@@matthewstuartnz Yeah, the perpetual license for Reason is still purchaseable....for now. Reason Studios is kind of sly and slick about keeping there customers hanging from a string. I've been using Reason since vers.1 and yes we don't care about those wack sound packs when we can make much better ones then they have to offer in any genre we choose we hold out to buy R11 in order to get the 12 for FREE in hopes there would be new mods or improved features or much needed enhancements but then they change for a more sound business decision for their company which is all well and good but what about their consumers who have been riding with them since Reasons inception and I begged them for VST support for over 5yrs and they seem to like to tune out their users as opposed to someone they hold in high regard who says the very same thing to them then OH ok since they mentioned they want VST support in the latest vers. Reason finally listens then only to pull the rug out from it's users to start a subscription because it's more lucrative for their company but not the user our frustrations are truly valid in regards to their antics and we are tired of it.

They are releasing too many rack extensions and plugins, without improving the DAW. Look how many drum rack extensions there are. There must be at least 6 or 7 drum rack extensions, when all I need is Kong. Not to mention HOW MANY SYNTHS DO I REALLY NEED? I will not buy anymore synths. I have at least 10 to 20 software synths by now.

I'm all about new stuff, but only if it is actually new and really pulls it's weight. Have the drum sequencers are a waste of time. The thing that deters me from Reason+ is that if you end your subscription then the whole thing turns into a pumpkin and you revert back to whatever Reason license you had before the subscription started. That's the fundamental problem I have with any software subscription: I spend all this money on the subscription and never own anything. I'd rather use my money to pick and choose which upgrades and which rack extension to purchase, and then own them indefinitely. That said, I do like the idea of the sound pack subscription. My understanding is that once you download a patch from a sound pack then you get to keep it forever. If that's true, then that alleviates my concern above for the sound packs. If they offered the sound packs as a separate subscription at a fair price, then I might sign up for it.
@matthewstuartnz
@matthewstuartnz 3 года назад
True. What if there was some way to ‘earn’ the license after a certain period of using Reason +. Like, if you were on it for a year and cancelled you got the full license for the latest version? I think that would be cool.
@Furox
@Furox 3 года назад
@@matthewstuartnz Yes, that occurred to me as well. To be fair to Reason Studios and prevent people from abusing the option, I think they'd need people to be a subscriber for at least 1 year or something as you say before you're allowed to keep anything upon cancellation. And I'd be agreeable to losing say the last 6-12 months of updates if I were to cancel to prevent people from cancelling right after some cool new synth is added. That takes away the sting of paying endlessly for a subscription and never owning anything. If they were to do this then I think I'd give the subscription model a try. But I seriously doubt they'd do something like this. As it presently stands, Reason+ is not for me.
