My uncles a pilot for SouthWest Airlines and he was a test pilot for the max 800 nothing went wrong for the versions that are grounded due to complications. I think its the Russian Collusion messing up the max 800's ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Correction: Airbus A321XLR is actually the perfect 757 replacement. And all of the US’s big three airlines have ordered it. It can also fly almost 10000 km and Airbus is almost ready with it.

Airbus has - in my honest opinion - a far better market situation than Boeing does. It already released it competitor to the 777X - the A350 (also available in the A350-1000 version) - and is already selling it a great deal, improving it etc. etc. The A321 LR (and possibly XLR) is already filling up most of the gap between the 737/A321 and the B787/A330 - so to develop an entirely new airplane just for such a low demand is just a very dangerous and risky decision. Airbus has the upper hand at the moment....

@@grahamturner2640 The problem for Boeing is that Airbus is creating a sucessor to the A320, while Boeing is developing the 797. So the already inferior 737 will get another competitor in the near future. So instead developing a niche plane, Boeing should consolidate their short range models. Another problem could be that, if the A30x project is going to become as versatile as the A320 family, there could be also a successor to the A321 XLR, so maybe Airbus doesnt even have to develop a whole new plane model. In the end Boeing could be standing there with a great 797, which is under pressure by the 321 XLR and its successor, while Airbus in addition to that is bringing a new short to mid range plane onto the market.

It's not really the engineers' fault. The planes would be perfectly safe if the pilots had received proper training, but boeing decided to not require extra training in order to save costs for the airlines.

Lot of assumptions here. In short range market a plane can only beat a train if they get there faster, including embarking. For a train I buy a ticket 5 minutes before departing, climb on and off we go. For a plane, any plane, is driving for 30 mins to airport, then embarking for an hour, security and all the jazz, only then take off, so in most cases, train is faster, at least in Europe.

This is kind of what I've been saying about the hyperloop concept (as well as any talk of returning to supersonic passenger flight). what percentage of our journey, door to door, will take exactly the same time? Security protocols and baggage handling is the answer, so we might end up with hypersonic vehicle speeds to shave just an hour off a twelve hour journey.

Hey man! Love your productions! :) Just one comment. You've said here that the train will always win against flight on the London to Edinburgh route. I travel this route quite frequently for work, and would always pick flight. Return is almost always cheaper, it's overall faster and Edinburgh airport is not too far from the city itself making it a good alternative. Once again, the price is the main thing for me, so I am looking at that first. If the price of the train would be lower, I'd pick the train. Simply better to be in the same condition for an extended period of time when I can work, and not on train to get to an airport, then to wait in a lobby, then get on a short flight, again take transport to Edinburgh hotel. The train ride is much better in regards to how much work a business traveler can do.

I'm an airline pilot in Brazil and i fly the 767. I know this problem by heart. But there is still a breakthrough needed on the middle size wide body model. 767's are still less expensive to operate compared to the A350/787.

@@madhououinkyoma pretty simple reasons: - safety (sudden repressurisation cause by i.e. accidents or damaging of the tube) - running costs (keeping up the low air pressure) regular maglevs will do the job just fine while being safer and cheaper.

@@hphll Maglevs themselves might not be the answer, though. We could also try our luck revitalizing the aerotrain concept from the 60s, which is basically a train that runs on an air cushion like a hovertrain, with the track just being a concrete guide. This makes infrastructure installation and upkeep costs cheaper than even regular train tracks, let alone maglev. The only reason people stopped looking into it was because the oil crisis at the 70s made governments stop investing in their development, so the technology still has a good chance of proving itself.

Riding high speed rail is a pleasure! You have a great view of the scenery as you travel at 300 kph. Flying has become an unpleasant ordeal. Everything from the traffic around the airport to the 4 hr. early check in, the security lineups, the cramped seats, lack of legroom, delays, everything about flying has become a hassle.

But the thing is you can’t go with railways over the atlantic or the pacific. Also its a hassle to get high speed railways through mountain ranges. Alptransit for example long time to build, and expensive. Trains are mostly effective at smaller distances, maybe around a few hundred kilometers.

it's not as simple as plugging in newer engines. the 757 design including the wings are already old, heavy and inefficient to today's standards.plus you have to redesign all the other internals such as avionics etc. these in turn will make it costly than just starting from scratch

I’ve never thought about this specifically but that graphic showing the 4000 mile range of the plane is actually pretty helpful in visualizing how messed up the Mercator projection is. Looking at it, you wouldn’t think it makes sense you could fly to Stockholm but not Italy however that far north every mile is so stretched out it’s much closer than you’d think. Does a good job showing you how an equidistant circle on a Mercator is not circular at all lol

Hyperloop is never going to happen in it's current form. Its a shame it gets all the attention when more practical solutions like maglev traditional trains would do well in their current form, and even better with some new money and research infused into it. I am also surprised a hydrogen fueled aircraft isn't more seriously considered.

Michael O Problem is Maglev technology/building is very expensive, although at the physics level, a very simple one. They've had great success in Japan, and quite rightly so. But for me personally I'm a bit disappointed, on the very slow advancement of electric engines. But it should be no surprise, commercial aviation, takes many year's to adopt anything from the norm...

Nothing to do with engines, everything to do with crap batteries that weigh so much they can't lift themselves off the ground and no future battery tech we know of today is going to overcome that. You seriously think putting a maglev train inside a gigantic vacuumed tube is less expensive than just a maglev train? The amount of energy needed to sustain such a vacuum in such a large amount of space is almost immeasurable. But hey, don't let actual physics and science get in the way of you sucking off elon 'i love taxpayer money' musk. sigh. maglevs are here and now and go as fast as propeller planes. This vacuum train bullshit has been a pipe dream since the 1800s, it's not a new idea, and it's not possible at scale with any current or expected future technology.

Hydrogen fueled anything except a rocket isn't seriously considered because hydrogen's density sucks making it take up too much room in whatever you want to fuel with it. Hybrid electric may be the propulsion of the future for aircraft, especially something like a sky-taxi that has to do VTOL and conventional flight. Regular gas turbine engine fueled by regular old jet fuel, connected to a generator, which drives propellers or ducted fans. No batteries needed because you don't store the energy. The answer to questions of the form "Why don't we have electric X, Y, or Z?" is that batteries don't have enough energy density yet. Maybe Aluminum-Ion batteries will change that if they ever leave the research labs, as they should be able to store about twice as much energy for the same battery weight. Even that might not be enough.

Problem with the Electric planes for local rout argument. (I would actually be interested in your response to this) Trains have one major advantage over electric planes. Time not traveling. Have you ever noticed that a train pulls up, stops, off loads, on loads and leaves within a minute or two? Tell me about one time you've seen a plane come in from a flight and take off withing 10 or 15 minutes. Trains don't have to fill up with fuel, or recharge batteries between trips. Trains also don't have to go though pre-flight checks, or safety inspections at every stop they make. The one major inefficiency in trains compared to planes has been friction with the rail. But comparing diesel trains (just because I happen to know this) to other methods of haling freight, planes and trucks are both more expensive, due to fuel consumption. Boats are the only thing that can hall more tons of goods per galleon of fuel then trains. There just is not much friction between steel rails and steel wheels. I acknowledge that the trains we are talking about are not diesel. But we were moving in the direction of electricity already. So with the addition of Mag-Levs and Mono Rails, this inefficiency is being reduced ore even fully eliminated. Modern people carrying trains are also electric and receive their power though the rail or overhead wires rather then having to carry the eminence weight of batteries with them. An added benefit of this was mentioned in my first paragraph, they don't have to stop and recharge or refuel. That leads me into my next point. Recharging an electric plane would take so long that any economic efficiency gained in flight, wold be lost to time sitting on the ground charging. Time is money, if your expensive equipment is just sitting there not making you money, it's loosing you money. Just how long wold it take to charge a plane, That does depend on a lot of variables. I have done research into electric cars in the past. Some of the cars that have a reasonable charge time of *just a few hours* are tiny short range one seater city cars. Most electric cars take between 10 and 20 hours to charge enough to travel over 200 miles. In order to have an electric plane leaving as shortly after the previous one got in, would require so many more planes then is economically feasible because you wold have to have several charging at each sight while one it flying each route. Trains are also capable of running the same number of engines during rush hour as during non rush hour, while not worrying about the number of seats filled to the same degree that a plane wold have to worry. The train can simply add more cars during rush hour, and remove some to conserve power when less people will be riding. (not saying that this is done, just that it is possible) I have watched your video explaining why Trains are more costly then plains, (personnel and long rails), however, you yourself did state that for these local distances, trains are more cost efficient doe to low maintenance costs when compared to planes. So in conclusion, for local short range routes, trains wold be more cost efficient for a company to run then electric planes. Trains are also more convenient to consumers for short local commuters due to their orderly and regular arrival and departure times. ******************************************************************************************** Alright, so how did I do writing a counter argument. I could have put some more time and research into it, but I have dynamic homework to do. So I don't mean this comment to be an attack, just a counter argument to one of the points you mane in the video. Thanks for reading, and I hope to get a response from you Wendover Productions. Most electric cars take between 10 and 20 hours to charge enough to travel over 200 miles" This isn't true, with current technology in consumer hands you can gain about 300miles of range per hour on a supercharger, provided you're starting low on charge and don't need to go to absolutely full. Drop that down to 200 if you want to take a pessimistic view and it's still a far cry from your current statement. As charge rates are proportional to battery size (along with a bunch of other factors), having a longer range car or other vehicle doesn't require longer to charge, provided you've the extra power available from your source.

Yes, I was listening and thinking the concept of average speed is totally lost by the presenter. One of the massive advantages of trains, is you can take tickets while people have boarded, so loading and unloading times already save a lot on planes. As does taxi times, as does the fact they are not so weather dependent or airspace (aka Slots) OR PHANTOM DRONES (#Gatwick). Planes have their uses, short haul isnt one of them.

One of the issues facing airliners though compared to trains is the wait. Having to go to an airport often further away from a city, having to be early enough that check-in hasn't closed, having to go through security, waiting for the plane, getting on the plane, flying, getting off, waiting for your bags, then traveling back towards the city center or your next destination. Trains, on the other hand, don't have security checks, don't require check-ins, (you can arrive a few minutes before departure) and you can go straight from the heart of the city, to wherever you need to go, no need to wait to collect your bags.

Because it doesn't fil the gap completely. The best there is now to fill that spot is the 757, but they want a little more. so what they should do, instead of making a those crap 737Max, make a 757 Max. They have 777-1000 on the drawing board right now.

A United Airlines 757 seats 169 passengers, while a Lufthansa A321 seats 190. A321LR has the same capacity as A321, and airlines can fill 180+ people comfortably. Hardly a gap between the 757 and A321, if you ask me.

I think the answer is more on the engines. The A321 has a lot less power on the engines compared with the 757, it means less weigth capacity to carry on the plane.

Good video...i just don't think your statement at 6:10 is accurate (not to mention contradicts what you say at 8:25)....what analysts think THAT about oil? Anything I've read about oil prices predicts they'll be badly depressed, starting right now.... as solar and electric cars begin to bite into energy demand while fracking continues to push up supply.

No. Those are "wide-bodied" aircraft. they want small ones that go far, so they will always get full flights.

So, the 797 is supposed to have 225 to 260 seats. The A330neo has between 246 to 290 seats. The A321LR provides up to 240 seats. So they both togehter, fill the market. The 797 will be in my opinion just an alternative to these two aircrafts.

That's the capacity with the typical First Class/Business/Economy configuration. The capacity that Wendover stated was for ALL ECONOMY configuration, which when apply to the A330, it can carry up to 456 passengers, obviously too much.

Kyle Solis was going to say that it is a smaller plane, but after looking it up, it does seem to carry a fair amount of passengers (250 in dual class system), and has a good autonomy, at 6600miles for the a320-200 Perhaps efficiency is a concern?

The old A330 could be considered a mid-range airliner, yes, while the new A330neo is somewhere between a mid-range and long-range plane instead. It is a bit too large to quite fill the niche that Wendover describes, but I wouldn't put it past Airbus to shorten it if there was demand for them doing so...

We have access to more oil today than we have had access to in all of previous recorded history. That is not an issue now, and will not be an issue for generations. Electric systems will never be a feasible method of powering liner aircraft. Even disregarding entirely the elephant in the discussion: where would all that electricity come from?

Oil and gas costs are projected to double over the next 20 years . We need an alternative to oil , whether you like it or not. And while we might have isolated many different deposits that we did not know of , all of the "easy" deposits have been exploited . It's not sustainable ; not from an environmental perspective , not from an economic perspective and certainly not from a social perspective , with millions of people dying from airborne pollution every year. The problem here isn't actually the engines , we've already designed fairly powerful engines , and the tech will continue to improve. The problem lies with the storage method , ie batteries . Lithium simply isn't energy-dense enough , and it's in finite supply . Something like hydrogen could provide a good alternative , as long as the industry adopts it and lowers costs . Our existing combustion engine designs could even be refitted to accept it as fuel . The actual energy could be provided by renewable energy or nuclear fission . Nuclear fusion could even be a good source if we manage to master it.

looks like Airbus is in the lead in the small aircraft/long range with the A321XLR with 8,700km range (5406 miles), meaning it can fly to destinations just short of Los Angeles from London whereas Boeing haven't even released plans for the 797 yet.

The energy density of jet fuel compared to batteries is around 100:1. Until battery technology improves, this will be the major roadblock for large electric airplanes. Lilium has a concept that might work for transporting people for shorter ranges.

dtoften Agreed, it's just not energy dense enough to be broadly applicable. I think new hydrogen storage methods eg. adsorption or exotic solutions of some kind are more likely to provide an answer in the long term.

One thing that is all too often not taken into account with electric powered transport is how that electricity is going to be generated. When you point it out, you get rebuffed with current electricity prices. However those prices don't account for the increase in demand. You also get rebuffed with "it'll come from renewable resources, and we're getting ever closer to entirely renewable energy", which also fail to take into account the massive increase in electricity demand electric mass transport will cause.

Basic economics proves that once the demand for electricity reaches fossil fuel levels it's price will be simmilar in real terms to fossil fuels. Wendover is a low information hype/MSM stooge. perpendicular. The term "hyperspeed" is generally referred to speeds of Mach 5 and above... The Hyperloop can barely travel at Mach 1 on paper at the moment.

My friend Larry configured the 757 and 767. I always argued with him on ski or fishing trips. I like high wing, aerocomander, B 26, etc. with wide body and landing gear on the fuselage. When you fly, the flying time is minimized by the get ready, get into your seat and getting into the air. I miss the old days when flying meant singing and drinking in the lounge and meeting people from all over the world. Iguana

Based on Boeing’s current problems with the 737 max, 777x and many more, most likely I think they won’t launch a clean sheet design for the middle of the market. It will either be, in my opinion, a re engined and rewinged 757 or 767, or Boeing may revive the 787-3, which is even smaller than the smallest 787 model and may be closer to the middle of the market, and the most cost friendly option of the three.
