Technically that's a material, they're just make up of the same elements in a different chemical construction. Remember, matter is made up of elements, different elements and different formulas make up different types of matter. You can change the matter by rearranging elements. Edit: yeah I learned this but I haven't had to do it in a while so I checked before I elaborate, coal doesn't change into diamond, graphite and diamond are made up of carbon, and coal is pure carbon, graphite is a mineral made of carbon. The chemical structure for graphite is flat and they rest on top of each other, that's why it's so brittle because the bonds simply slide around on top of each other. The carbon structure for diamond is far more complicated and interlock, why it's so hard.

@@LangkeeLongkee that's actually very interesting! I don't know why I used the term "element" as, now that I think about it, that definitely doesn't seem right. But, although diamond may not strictly turn into coal, I was more aiming to comment on the fact that materials can actually be turned into others (without research into which ones). But yeah, the actual question of whether coal can be turned to diamond may be a no, but the other side I feel she also wasn't strictly aware of, of material transmutation (I think that's the term), is also something that is interesting without necessarily having a direct link to the diamond-coal question.

@@DapperDonkey yeah well she was talking about the fact that we can’t change an element into another element so she’s correct. I mean it depends on who and how you ask, cause for example there’s different types of carbon, and to some people of you change the amount of protons, stabilize or destabilize it they may consider it different since the number of protons wold be different from that on the periodic table and all that. But she wasn’t talking about material transmutation she was talking about elements. I assume when she said metal she meant like iron, not necessarily a metal in the sense of chemistry (like how table salt is a type of salt but not the only salt scientifically speaking). The thing she was mistaken on was alchemy not being real, because alchemy IS chemistry. She seemed to be getting there kinda but thought this was just an interpretation and the magic version was actually alchemy when it’s vice versa, chemistry is based on alchemy as a practice, alchemy is very real and the magic version seem in media a lot so the interpretation (from people at the time who didn’t understand it) not the other way around.
