Thank you David! ❤Both channels! David, I miss my straight 6 in my 1984 European Toyota Supra I imported from Germany. Awesome Supra. What if they bright back the twin turbo, straight 6 cylinder, 24valve? Our 2020 4Runner Limited 4x4 has the X-REAS system suspension which gives better cornering control, especially needed on our paved, curvy Rocky Mountain roads. However, we miss our 2005 4Runner 4x4 Sport v8. Superior fuel economy, hp & torque. Here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains high altitudes, the v6 and 5sp transmission is awful: Dangerously lacking hp, torque and seriously lacks proper number of gears for correct ratios. Thus, the v6 gets horrible fuel economy and the 5sp is always hunting for gears, either too low or too high of gear ratio for the required situation. Very frustrating and even dangerous in many high altitude situations, both on and off paved roads. Making left hand turns on a busy roadway, merging onto the highway or towing is frightening at times with the v6 & 5sp transmission. If Toyota is going with a turbo 4 cylinder, we highly suggest it comes standard paired to a powerful hybrid lithium battery system mated to a 10sp transmission and be affordable. If it comes with a standard 30amp 110v outlet, that would be perfect for today’s 4x4 off grid power needs. In conclusion, Toyota has much work to do and after owning gen 2, 3, 4 and now 5th generation Toyota 4Runners for decades, we really miss our v8 4Runner 4x4 Sport, especially in high altitudes and/or towing applications. We will gladly test any prototypes Toyota ships our way here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, USA🇺🇸. 🙂

Who cares about gas mileage? People who buy the 4Runner know what they were buying and if they didn’t like the gas mileage it gets, then they shouldn’t have bought it. I know I bought my 2021 4Runner based on the reliability and capability. I’m not interested in having all the bells and whistles, but rather reliability and utility. I will keep my 4Runner for many many years to come.

MPG is like a tank alright. So it's a tradeoff. If Toyota can make the 2.4 l turbo last as long as the 4 l V6 then they'll have a winner. Ideally I'd like to see a 3.0 liter. Bump it up a little to take the stress off the engine a bit.

@Kristian_Saile

Here is the appeal of the current 4Runner, it’s the last torch holder of a new vehicle you can buy right now that will last you 20-25 years with basic upkeep. If I was a betting man, as good as the new one will be, it won’t have the low upkeep and and durability as the current one, especially a hybrid. The majority of new vehicles on the road are going to be a maintenance nightmare in 10 plus years. That’s also going to keep resale crazy high assuming gas doesn’t hit $10 a gallon… which isn’t a stretch at this point, doh!

@Kristian_Saile

@@user-tb7rn1il3q battery tech isn’t there yet for 15 year life, we know the current 4.0 liter will surpass the life expectancy of current battery packs on hybrids. Show me a turbo 4 that is more reliable than a 4.0 liter v6….. That’s my point and yes I think EV’s and hybrids are going to make huge strides in the next 20 years but they aren’t there yet. This is only an issue if you are keeping the vehicle over 10 years and also have concerns about resale after that period.

If somehow I knew gas prices weren’t going to rocket out of control due to the bone heads leading Canada and the US, would take a chance on a ‘23… but buying a 4Runner and then having fuel rocket to 2.50-3.00 a liter and stay there would not be good with a 4runner for a higher mileage person anything can happen with the current state of the world… but I think there’s an argument to be made tht the current 4runner is the longest lasting vehicle that can now be had.

Stephen and David, Everybody and his brother who wanted a V6 4Runner has had plenty of warning to get one. In doing so they have set themselves up for the next 20-25 years. In the next 4Runner I would like to see restrained styling with improved function and economy as well as ample customer choice in paint and appearance packages. If minnows like Ford and Stellantis can muster the resources to offer a 2 door, manual, basic 4x4, I see no reason why Blue Whale Toyota could not do the same 😉

Call me crazy but I think Toyota doesn't know what they are going to do. They have seen the runaway success of the Bronco and would love to go up against it but that isn't what the 4Runner is. The new platform will have to take hybrid and EV considerations too. So here is what I think. There will be a new 4Runner that will be similar to the what they have now with a turbo 4 and hybrid in the base model. The TRD Pro version will be PHEW with more power from a bigger battery and more powerful electric motor. They will also release (don't laugh now) a short wheelbase version that will look more like the FJ Cruiser but will be a normal 4 door and will be the Bronco fighter. It will also be a turbo 4 with hybrid and PHEV. But it won't be too radical. It won't have independent rear with an electric propulsion like I would like. But if you want to keep weight down you will have to get rid of the transfer case, rear drive shaft and solid rear axle. You're going to need room for a bigger battery and for packaging its the only way to go in an SUV. The only way to battle the Bronco is with hybrid and PHEV specially if you're looking at 2 years from now. They haven't done it with the Bronco Sport or the Bronco and the Bronco isn't exactly a fuel sipper. Ford won't do anything with them since they are selling so well. But 2 years from now is a long time. Maybe that explains the delays (along with supply chain trouble.)

I know the new forerunner is a baby LandCruiser.. not sure why Toy can't get smart and give the people what they want. Old Man Emu and ARB optioned out!!

I don’t know exactly what the new 4Runner will bring but rest assured guys and gals, Toyota will ruin it and kill it’s legendary reputation. Oh and jack up the price on top of that.

Our 2020 4Runner Limited 4x4 has the X-REAS system suspension which gives better cornering control, especially needed on our paved, curvy Rocky Mountain roads. We miss our 2005 4Runner 4x4 Sport v8. In conclusion, Toyota has much work to do or after owning gen 2, 3, 4 and now 5th generation Toyota 4Runners for decades, we sadly will have no choice but to go with a different brand as our 2020 4Runner 4x4 v6 & 5sp is simply not acceptable in high altitudes and/or towing applications.

@@icare7151 The 4th gen 4Runner was the most premium ever. It was even more premium than the Land Cruiser Prado! It had the same full-time 4WD system on EVERY trim and the base engine was the 4.0 V6, not the 2.7 I4 that the Prado came standard with. The optional engine then completely destroyed it. 4.7 V8 vs 4.0 V6, no comparison. With the Tundra and especially the Sequoia we see Toyota making North American TNGA-F vehicles deliberately worse. The Land Cruiser is the only vehicle that wasn't a huge disappointment so far on this platform.
@runnerxa

The 2005 V8 4Runner 5 speed transmission is the same 5 speed transmission on the current 5th gen 4Runner. Only difference is the V8 torque comes earlier in the RPM range. Also used in the 2003-2007 Land Cruiser/LX470 and 2003-2009 GX470 as well as various oversea models (Land Cruiser Prado). The old trusty A750 5 speed paired with the 1GR 4.0 V6 is one of the reasons I skipped over the 5th gen 4Runner in favor of the GX and LX. If Lexus can put a 6 speed/8 speed in their comparable BOF SUV, then it should be a no brainer to put the same 6/8 speed in their equivalent Toyota product. Land Cruiser/LX of the same year got the 6 speed and 8 speed upgrade.

@@runnerxa Does the current Prado with the 4.0 1GR-FE V6 also use the 5-speed? With the 2.8 1GD-FTV turbodiesel I4 it uses a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

I ordered a '23 4Runner last month and I have mixed feelings about it. I know it will be bulletproof and it has been updated with some of the newer safety equipment. The so so fuel economy and lackluster performance , along with the knowledge that it just won't be as safe in a collision as the next gen has got me down a bit. I just didn't want to wait another 5 years or so for the new one to be out and proven before purchasing. It's great to see you guys collaborating.

I don't think you will see Toyota launch a 6th gen 4runner in 2024 when the new Tacoma and Grand Highlander will come out that year and the Land Cruiser is going to be sold in the US as well. With shipping costs this high why would they continue to build the 4R in Japan when the Tacoma and 4R will mots likely share the same frame, engine and transmission?

I'm in the market for a new vehicle and one of my options is the Toyota 4Runner. However, after looking at what this vehicle has to offer I'm disappointed. It really has nothing significant for the price. It doesn't even have rear backup censors. I'll wait to see what Toyota comes up with in the next few years.

An 8 or 10-speed transmission added to the current 4.0L V6 would drive efficiencies and make it perform better too. Nobody wants to see a 2.4L turbo motor that is not really going to be more fuel efficient. Nissan still offers a V6 in the Pathfinder which is likely on Toyota's mind.
