OK! I see that I used to live near your McHenry location. Spring Grove. So, I just want to get your (Brian) thoughts, as my HVAC unit is nearing its EOL. Currently I have a Payne Package unit (PH1ZNA036), that I replaced the original one as it died in the HOT summer of 2004. It has performed perfectly since the install, other than my replacing the fan and a squirrel cage (and the unit is rusting). My house is 1100 SqFt UN-insulated, with the following ceiling vents (2) 8", (4) 6", (1) 5" with a 12" supply from the unit, which is believe should be a 15". My next unit will eliminate the Package unit. I wanted to replace the system with ductless Ceiling Cassettes, but the ceiling joists are 16" apart and all the cassettes are 24" or larger. Major project, not going to happen. We do not like the wall mounted mini split units, so that is out. Putting a regular air handler in the attic is out of the question, access and location. That brings me to the "Ducted mini split" system", which looks perfect for my house. My thoughts are that I would replace the package unit with (2) independent ducted mini split units. A 12k and an 18k. Your first thought is, why install 2 separate units. Down here in central Florida (retired and went south from Spring Grove) when the HVAC dies, we also die, as the HVAC's never die in the long 3 weeks of winter that we have down here. And of course the summers are brutal. This option will give us some comfort as I would have one bedroom on each unit and stagger the other rooms to sort of equalize the temperatures should one go bad. The package unit, last year, in AC mode ran for a total of 1,974 hours and the heat ran for 58 hours, slightly different from up north. The humidity in the house is always between 47 and 51%, the the system works nicely. The one possible drawback would be the 138 degree attic temperature during the summer, but I would build insulated boxes around each unit which should help some. At the moment the tube going into the Evaporator coil is at 41 degrees and the tube going into the Evaporator is at 133 degrees, which appears to be higher that it used to be. How do I know all this, years ago I built an Energy Management system that keeps all the data for me. Finally, do you think that this would be a good plan to stick with? I am at the stage where I want to have all the ducks in a row so that when that day comes and the HVAC decides that it had enough of Florida work I will be ready to take this on without trying to figure out what to do. To me, the hours that the current compressor runs are a lot and worry that the replacements may not be able to handle the demand on them over the years. Oh, have you ever used the "Airzone Easyone Plenum" or a product like it for adding zone control to this type of system? Thanks Don Sorry for the length

if a unit had enough btu for the sq ft of a house couldnt you just phase it into the existing ductwork ?
