Eh, AMD comes in and out of being on top. Back in the mid-2000's they were murdering intel. First the Athlon-64 was just such a beast, then AMD followed it up with true dual-core processors and quad-core processors (AMD64x2,4). Unfortunately by the time AMD did quad-core intel was catching up and eventually dominated the high end CPU market until Ryzen. Even then that's only because AMD got to 7nm first, so they'll need to keep sizing down ahead of intel in order to stay ahead of intel. That is if intel can actually get to 7nm soon, but better that amd keep the heat on.

@@ncolvin05 AMD also got ahead of Intel because Intel broke their own tick tock model at least in part through laziness. Cpus haven't moved in over 5 years. That's why Apple laptops had problems, because the Cpus were falling behind the curve

And it was weirdly underclocked at 800 mhz. XD

I had an 860k, was a nice chip and did my gaming needs well till I went ryzen 2600

Because AMD back then tried making each pair of cores share resources in order to accommodate large core counts in the subpar transistor density of GloFo's silicon processes, and since in many cases trying to address each core as a ''full'', separate core caused bottlenecks on the second core accompanying it or on both, so instead of doing further stupid decisions and make a custom task programmer, they made the OS look at each module (which is a pair of cores with shared resources) as a single core with two threads, but don't confuse it with Intel's ''Hyper Threading'', as these are indeed two execution units instead of a single execution unit and a fake thread that holds processes that are receiving data in order to be executed. This fixed the first problem and increased the ''single'' core performance of FX and other CPUs using derivatives of Bulldozer by making each module focus on a single thing at the time, which resulted in up to 20%+, but definitively killed the per core parking, as it has to park a pair of cores instead of being able to park even odd numbers of cores, effectively killing the boost clocks of these chips in real world applications, they are still effective in benchmarks, though.
