MYSTERY GUEST: Gen. Alfred Greunther; Fred MacMurray [film and TV actor] & June Haver [his wife, a film/TV actress herself] PANEL: Dorothy Kilgallen, Tab Hunter, Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf
Dorothy has been looking absolutely stunning over that past dozen episodes or so. She looks so elegant and refined. She always reminds me of a very delicate deer, a doe, she's so fragile and petite and dainty. Anyway, just pointing out she looks quite lovely.
The only way to reconcile “Dorothy …looking stunning” with reality is to reference the first episode of Star Trek, “The Cage.” A human woman is horribly injured and disfigured on the planet Talos. Talosians were able to save her, but as they had no understanding of human physiology or aesthetics at the time, she was left horribly disfigured. With the aid of the Talosians' illusions, she is able to appear beautiful. Until reading your post, and noting over 50 upvotes, I thought Star Trek was fiction, especially when truly beautiful Arlene is visible.
Enjoy seeing her as often as you can. If you Google her name you’ll see that she passed away before this show was cancelled, much to the consternation of everyone.
I remember, just barely, these shows from when I was growing up. These days when you think of improvisation, you think of comedians, sometimes actors. With his answers, John Daly has to be one of the best improvisational artists around. To be able to come up with such convoluted answers, on the spot, with rarely, if ever, get confused. I love his answers, they can be a whole education in their own right.....
I have agree. Having watched all the episodes from the beginning to this one, it is clear that as good as the panelists were, the show could not have succeeded without John Daly at the helm.
Well, there's no 12 step program for WML addiction, 1013pka, so I'm afraid you're doomed. There are hundreds and hundreds of these shows still surviving!
Tab Hunter was quite handsome and well-mannered. Wonderful to see him on this show! I also appreciated seeing General Guenther, and love his dedication to the Red Cross and it's mission. Fred and his wife were so hilarious!!!
June was a rising Fox star of war era musicals during the Golden Age. She was supposed to supplant Alice Faye and Betty on the musical pedestal, but pretty much retired after marrying Fred. They met co-starring in the 1945 musical Where Do We Go from Here.
(March 3, 1899 - May 30, 1983) was a senior United States Army officer, Red Cross president, and bridge player. At age fifty-three, he became the youngest four-star general in the U.S. Army's history.
What an honor to see this General. What a great sense of humor he had, too! Dorothy Kilgallen doesn’t stand up for anybody; even Arlene got up part way.
"By Golly" Frager's real first name was Sammy. He was born in what is now part of Romania. He was a boxer in the featherweight class who had success as an amateur while in the Navy, but as a pro was worse than Tony Banta. His record as a pro was 0 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw. He had a far more successful career making boxing gloves and his customers included five boxers who at one time or another held the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World. He died on April 19, 1966.
Even though he is only on for a couple minutes, I thought Ronald Preston was very entertaining. He seemed like a real character, somebody to party with!
I tried to learn more about Gen. Alfred Greunther and Google says he is, in fact, Gen. Alfred Gruenther. Anyway - thank you for this and for all the videos. I watch all of them (in turn, moving clockwise) and I have the intention to watch all of them; at least all until November 1965.
Bennett wanted Gen. Greunther to run for president. I kinda wish he was here now to run for the presidency. We need solid leadership like that. Where are they now?
Bennett thought the General's book was a memoir about his war experiences. Even though he was the youngest 4 star general in the history of the Army, his book was on playing bridge.
Nervous, perhaps. I was thinking just not having a clue how to play the game, the questions to ask. He's on the panel because he's Tab Hunter not for the game. Nothing wrong with that. Unlike some comedians he had the graciousness not to waste time despite not knowing what to do.
I wondered the same thing. The guy looked like an idiot with the gum chewing on camera. I think he must have had three sticks of gum in his mouth, too, given how much mouth movement he had. I remember all the times teachers in school had kids spit out their gum in class and I would have thought that by the time someone got out of high school, they'd have learned not to chew gum in inappropriate places . . . .
He was indeed out of his element. I' m not knocking Mr. Hunter, but perhaps he should have spent a day or two practicing, following his previous appearance as MG. I'm sure somebody would have been glad to give him some tips.
When the General sat down, I thought, What an unfortunate way to be bald. But when he lifted his head, the intelligence and humour just kept from his face. An impressive man.
Very late to comment back to this but I have a feeling it was more a case of being nervous than being "good looking". If you watch the episode that he is the mystery guest he even comments on how nervous he was being on live TV.
John's feelings looked hurt when Fred called him "Bennett." He seemed to have recovered quickly, though. John's convoluted explanations were a favorite part of the show for me, even as a small child.
How did Fred get such a beautiful wife? I know MacMurry was one of the richest Hollywood actors, but almost all that came from buying up land in Hollywood before it became expensive.
B Kavanaugh He couldn't hold a candle to Andy Griffith. Talk about the living embodiment of the cheapskate part of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Last I heard Griffith died trying to find a way to take it with him and keep it out of the hands of others once he was gone.
Oh, you're so completely alone in that opinion, Marcus. What-- Tab Hunter, eye candy? The deuce you say. ;) I always thought that Mike Nelson from Mystery Science Theater 3000 in his younger days looked quite a lot like Tab Hunter.
Just about any guest panelist was better than Wally Cox when it came to playing the game. As to being eye candy, Tab Hunter is light years better than Wally Cox. My only complaint is that every time Tab got a "no" answer, the camera moved on to the next panelist. He even looked good wearing a blindfold. Not just handsome, but boyishly cute.
ToddSF 94109 I hve to admit, I have a lot more patience for Tony Perkins and Tab Hunter as bad panelists than I do for Pamela Tiffin. Slight bias, I suppose. . . ;)
John dawdles on some, then it inevitably leaves no time for whomever is last. John said they had 2 minutes but John barely gave him 60 seconds,, flipped the cards, and said, "we're out of time." It's almost wore to bring on a final contestant for 30 seconds of screen time. I also don't get why, when John is obviously eyeballing the clock back and forth, his social cues clearly tell he's anxious, he mentions not having much time but then folks like Bennett have fot twiddle their thumbs or ask irrelevant questions or comments.
I find it very strange when a contestant gets on the show and then is unable to answer any question at all, no matter how clear the answer, without looking at John Daley.
@@kentetalman9008 I'd like to think it's not intelligence, but if you drive a garbage truck and the question is whether you work outdoors, is it possible to be nervous enough not to know?
The comments here are very toxic toward Mr Hunter. Not very fair to him when the same comments aren't made about other guest panelist on their first visit to the panel side of things. He was simply nervous. On the episode that he was the Mystery Guest he even made a comment on how nervous he was being on the show. Stop being so harsh people and stop thinking just because he is a "good looking" person he is stupid. That generalization about good looking people (male & female) is just wrong.
I've loved the show since it was brand new, but I've often that Dorothy and Bennett both were just a little TOO smart at times. Nothing wrong with making good guesses or being right, but I think it's better when you don't let it SHOW so obviously.
Franco Aragosta - I understand what you are saying, but these days there is so little wit, intellectual behavior, education, that I revel in these episodes where intellect is valued.
Tab Hunter did not have to know how to act. He just showed up, flashed a smile, nice pecs and emoted. He was there promoting the movie, The Spirit of St. Lous which I found weird since he wasn't in the movie. I expect Jack Warner wanted a younger crowd to go see the movie.
I LOVE THAT BENNETT GOT HIM FOR HIS GUM CHEWING! And John should have agreed!!! Oh my gosh and the kid - with no class - puts it back in his mouth! What was wrong with them! Bennett is correct!!
