There's something so comforting about a brutalmoose video. EDIT: Flintstones vitamins are delicious and your distaste of them is heresy. I am no longer comforted.
When I was 4 years old I was at universal? disney? and my only memory is being a cafeteria restaurant place and my mom was like "go find a seat" and i went and sat down with a lady cosplaying as Xena: Warrior Princess. being 4 years old i thought she was a real princess and a real warrior and the literal Xena Warrior Princess.
@@shitmultiverse1404 I know there was more than one episode where they kissed and heavily implied that they wanted to move to Lesbos... only for a reset button to be hit at the end for next week.
No it is not canon. It is left ambiguous for viewers. Though it seems to lean heavily one way during the last season. But there was never any episode saying they were lovers.
Judging by the style I'd say that Food Lion ad was done by the same animator who does the Red Bull ads, Johannes Kastner. It's at least what you're thinking of, I'm sure.
Not only that, they ran so many candy commercials for Hershey's Cookies & Cream, Resse's Peanut Butter Cups, and Snickers where you can go to the movies and get some candy at the concession stand along with a tub of popcorn and soda. to hop into the theater seats and watch a movie.
Of all the nostalgia channels I watch, none of them hit me as hard as this one does. Maybe it's the in-depth analysis of the commercials, maybe its the vhs grain on your commentary that you can only get with an old camcorder, but for some reason these videos really affect me on a deep level.
It’s because he feels the same way we do about these things, but he has ability to articulate his viewpoint in an effective way. It’s both genuine and well-prepared.
My grandfather - who is no longer with us - loved cartoons. I remember being a child in the early-2000s and my mom recording the cartoons on VHS for him. I miss my pawpaw.
I have one grandmother left. She's a great lady. However, I do wish I had all of them around. I miss them so much. I hope no one here takes their grandparents for granted. I did until the day I lost them. Don't make the same mistake I did, y'all. Visit them as often as you can, and hug them just as often.
My Grandma loves a good cartoon. We used to have some tapes with Taz-mania recorded on them. She still has a lot of Winnie the Pooh videos because that show was awesome. 😊
It's weird to think that back in the day people hated these commercials and wanted to skip them to watch the main program, but now people buy random boxes of VHS tapes to skip the shows and seek out the commercials.
@Frizzurd Yet you'll find that the "retro spectrum" will keep moving forward. When I first discovered YT in 2006, it was all about the 1980s, with the '90s still a hated decade at that point. A decade for now, we'll be seeing commentary on Razr cellphones, iPhone 1-3, social media apps, ringtone rappers, freecreditreport.com ads, and even those pharmaceutical/insurance ads that so many hate today.
@Frizzurd I can still see what you mean, and a lot of it has to do with a shift in fashions/vibe. The RU-vidr obviously prefers his Sub Pop Record artists compared to the headbangers of the glam metal years. And it seems now there is a backlash against 1980s nostalgia (and the 2010s) thanks to a new president being elected, but of course, I'll still continue to showcase the '80s and '90s equally on my channels (a slight edge to the '80s actually), with a few surprises from earlier decades on occasion. At least the '90s (except for perhaps 1998-99) isn't as tech obsessed as the 2000s and beyond has been and has a nice aura of organicity.
Xena: Warrior Princess is my mother's favorite show. She recorded several seasons worth after it started showing again on CTV Sci-Fi. They stopped airing it again a couple months ago.
Mystery Tapes is by far my favorite Moose segment. I was thinking that there needs to be some kind of pipeline to provide this guy with tapes for this to continue. Perhaps Moose would allow tapes to be sent to him.
"Remember, losing is the same as winning, just with fewer points" I'm sure some writer somewhere was satisfied with his or herself after writing that, probably at 11:59PM with a midnight deadline for a script and thought it sounded very, very, clever. Well, I'll have to admit, it certainly does :^D
Xena: A show about a warlord who's turned away from her destructive ways and is desperately trying to keep hold of the shreds of humanity she has left by helping as many people as she possibly can. Also Xena: A show where a lesbian couple has to sing a harmonic performance in order to not get tortured further.
I never watched Xena when it was on air, but that looks like Lucy Lawless to me… She was fantastic in the Spartacus series later on in her career! That’s where I first came to know of her.
"Not a fan of this medieval fantasy genre. Does this not just look just like Game Of Thrones?" (One of his favorite games is Runescape, later mentions Spyro's greatness) I know denial is usually a running gag in Brutalmoose's video, but this is an unusual example
I love mystery tapes. Such a time capsule. I have a few of them myself. My favorite commercials from the tapes are mostly video game related. Mine go from the 16-bit era to the 64-bit era
@@IanWearsHeadPhones After I asked that I googled it, the line in the original trailer was "Star Trek tapes." They changed it presumably for copyright reasons.
I used to think Brutalmoose was a stand up kind of guy, but now that I know he spit out his Flinstones vitamins, I don't know if I can watch him the same way anymore.
I know no one cares or will read this, but this video made my night. I haven't been too fond of the mystery vhs series, uts just not my thing, but ill still watch them. I had a horrible day at work and just wanted to turn my brain off fir a but while I ate dinner and put thus on. I was so excited and happy when he talked about Xena. Uts a show I love and grew up with that no one knows about or cares about enough to talk about. Most people are just aware that it exists. My favorite episode is "the bitter suite" which was the musical episode he talks about. The episode us a climatic conclusion of a series long arguments between Xena and Gabrielle. Xena had a son, back when she was evil, but kept him in the care of a centaur so he would be safe and gave a better upbringing than she could provide. Gabrielle was impregnated by a cult God and gave birth to a girl she named Hope. Xena tried killing hope many times knowing she was evil, and drove wedge between the two of them Gabrielle sent hope down a river in a basket, hoping she would find a good life. A few episodes go by and they decide to visit Solan, Xenas son. Gabrielle realizes that one of the children in the village is hope (due to her being evil shes now like 7) and she tries to run away with her. Hope under the direction of Callisto, whose family was murdered by Xena in her evil days, kills Solan and the centaur watching him. Xrna knows the culprit and forces Gabrielle to poison her daughter. As the bodies of their children are burning in a pyre, Xena tells her to never speak her sons name, and due to her and her evil daughter and her lies her son is dead. They part ways, and the bitter suite begins. Thank you brutalmoose for creating a video that brought me some joy out of a horrible time in my life
I have comorbid insomnia and I sleep every night with a Brutalmoose video playing. Over the years I've switched between RU-vid channels, podcasts, and ASMR videos, but the natural flow and delivery of Ian's vids just do the trick for me all the time. It usually takes around 3 hours for me to fall asleep but it cuts down to 30 mins - 1 hour with Brutalmoose vids playing over my earphones. When I'm awake, I just enjoy the vids as they are and they're still equally comforting.
You can also see Bruce Campbell aka Ash from Evil Dead in the background at 4:54. Another fun fact: the actress of Xena later played Ruby in the show Ash vs Evil Dead.
Thanks, Ian, for reminding me that the world is ever-changing. I’m now more motivated to cherish the positive moments I’m in, and relived to know the negative moments will pass.
I cannot stress how delightfully 90s the Conclusion part looks with that effect on. Either an effect or he ACTUALLY shot the whole video with a VHS recorded, and if that - huge respect!
"Losing is the same as winning. Just with fewer points." Ha ha! That line cracked me up. I line is very optimistic, but still feels entirely wrong to me. It's great.
I grew up just south of Richmond, VA. Fun fact -- WTVR Channel 6 was the first television station to begin broadcasting in the South. They started broadcasting on April 22, 1948 and still operate to this day with the same call sign!
I can't tell you how much I love these Unlabled VHS episodes, it's like riffing roulette. I'm shocked you've never seen Xena before though, the humor is great. It's got a great Quest for the Delta Knights vibe to it.
Xena and Hercules were Sam Raimi classics in every way. Appropriate for their time, and still kinda holds up for their setting and setup. Always some well known people in there too! God I still remember that musical episode.
Fun fact about Xena and Hercules: The Legendary Journey. They were both produced by Renaissance Pictures, which was founded by none other than Bruce Campbell and the Raimi Brothers of "Evil Dead" fame. Bruce also appears in around 50 episodes across both series. They would use the experience of making the two series to create Army of Darkness.
I can’t believe you attacked my nostalgia like that with no warning. I cried a little, I got choked up, straight up shocked, I loved it. That “Recorded Off Of TV” quality to it really hit me right in the soul bringing me back to the late 90’s watching with my dad and sister, more than any DVD recording could. Holy shit.
I've been collecting VHS for years now, and the only... questionable... material I _ever_ found out of ~500 tapes was on a tape from my _grandmother_ that she gave me to record over. It was probably an HBO recording that ran long into their overnight hours. Said recording has since long been recorded over by _The Price Is Right_ I think that it's an overblown occupational hazard of VHS collecting. Most stores toss the home-recorded tapes because of privacy issues (often they're tapes of birthday parties and trips -- literal home videos) and copyright issues (can't sell a home recording legally, but you can technically sell the tape itself). Even if a batch of home-records ends up on the sales floor, they probably won't have anything scandalous in them, because the grandkids will probably toss all the tapes in shock if they find that kind of stuff.
Oh wow what a small world! I follow you on insta and remember watching some of your vids years ago around when I got my first tattoo. So cool to see you around randomly! : )
I actually just had to google this bc I used to watch the show but I never saw the end--I had no idea that apparently Xena dies in the final episode?? Like yeah happy fun fantasy show about a badass warrior woman then suddenly she's fucking dead
@@jprofio it's worse than just "oh she dies" they get captured by the romans (i guess?) and theres this whole episode building up to their escape... but in the end someone breaks Xena's fucking spine, and then both her and her girlfriend get crucified in a Passion of the Christ style scene... its pretty horrifying
Chesterfield Auto is a "Pick'n'Pull" salvage yard nowadays, and is still an incredibly affordable-yet-labor-intensive source for used auto parts. Just bring tools.
In California we use to have a pick'n'pull (that's literally was the name) Now it's call U pick U pull, a lot of people go there to get whatever parts they need. It's cheaper to get the parts there cause it's not going to cost them an arm and leg to get one. Some are really lucky and get a car that is in really good condition and the part are near perfect and they take it apart to get their parts. My dad LOVES going there whenever he needs a part for a car or truck. My brother he works there and gets a pretty good discount on the parts too. Also he gets to pick a part before they set out in the yard. Lol
@@mysticmallachi777 I think I was probably a little too young for that one but who knows when they stopped running ads. Disappointed that there wasn't more richmond virginia stuff to show lol.
I can't wait to see the day when Millennials and Gen Z get old enough such that we start seeing AARP ads the way we see Audible or Manscape sponsored ads in videos.
Gum was such a thing in the 90s/early-mid-2000s. Everyone chewed gum, everyone had gum on them, half the impulse buy rack and a notable portion of a shelf or two in the candy aisle at the grocery store was gum. No idea why, but I do remember reading an article at some point that said the downturn in people chewing gum was very closely correlated to the 2008 recession and resulting decrease in disposable income.
I think it replaced smoking for a lot of people as a habit and something to do with their hands and mouths. And, yeah, not only did people downsize their expenditures but gum also got a lot more expensive. Seeing 25¢ on the Wrigley's packs in the ads was wild.
That was never concrete, to be honest. I loved the show and only in the last couple of seasons where the fan fic took over the actual show (talk about jumping the shark) that it was shoved down our throats that they were a lesbian couple. Before that, it was implied at times, but more often it was that they were best friends (possibly with benefits?), and while I have absolutely nothing against a show about a gay couple, I think they really capitulated to a small subset of the fanhood and it really ruined the chemistry and freshness of the show.
@@jbjacobs9514 If it was hinted at and then confirmed within the show, isn't it just story progression? I've never really seen the show, but I remember it. My yikesometer activates when i see the words "forced down our throats"
@@swagnostic132 I get where you're coming from, and if it had been a natural progression or really hinted at (not a sharp left turn because of fan fiction - I guess you had to be there at the time - it was never the focus of the show or anything more than they were best friends - there was a lot of fan fic, same as with Hercules and Iolaus. It was just something fans play with and it is fun as fan fiction and pretty common in a LOT of tv shows - but then they actually let fan fic internet "authors" write scripts for the show - almost like a gimmick - and it completely changed the trajectory and success of the show to go downhill).
I remember watching a marathon of Xena back in like 2000 at my grandfather's house. I don’t know why but the show had me hooked. It really opened my eyes to more fantasy/villain of the week type shows like Buffy or some Star Trek here and there.
I loved Xena as a kid. At first I didn't like it because I was at that age when girl protagonist = girl show. But when I finally watched it after being trapped at a grandparents house with nothing to do I loved how funny it was and definitely helped get me into the fantasy setting.
That Food Lion commercial reminded me a lot of the work of a Maine cartoonist by the name of Jeff Pert. I doubt he had any part in that commercial, but he has a very similar style.
I love how you record these on VHS and then upload them in 4:3. Really cool thing I haven't really seen anyone else do on RU-vid. It's also refreshing to see actual VHS quality instead of that overused Adobe Premiere plugin.
Can't replicate the same skewed sensitivity of those CCDs with just a filter... or at least without spending a lot of time tweaking it. Also the filter really overuses tracking errors and shooting blips. The naturalistic sensor noise and bad contrast is far preferable.
Horray mystery tapes!!! this has to be my current favorite series from you! (I also enjoyed some of ur semi vlogs stuff) and OFC ur video game reviews but since you don't do those as much anymore (which is fair) your mystery tapes series has become my top fave of urs!! Keep it up!!~
"Medieval fantasy like Game of Thrones." Um, Xena is supposed to be set in Ancient Greece. But...hmm...probably nothing about it is actually representative of Greek society, so...yeah, I don't know what to call it.
15:24 Dude I remember those Food Lion commercials so much! Loved the animation back then! Not sure I remember this specific one, but I think they made more of them like this. Surprised none of these have been archived, unless I'm not digging far enough.
