Again, great and exhaustive drink through. To your palates, they all seemed to focus on spice above sweetness except the Ridgemont. Just a thought but Barton’s Master Distiller, Ken Pierce retired in 2016. The RR bottle would have been his work. Possibly the newer bottles represent a shift in taste profile by his successors. And of course the RR was a barrel pick, so certainly someone might have chosen a barrel that was an outlier. Too bad there was noRR Small Batch. Great show again.
You might be right on the money there. I used to get Ridge. Res. all the time, but now anything from Barton just seems too spicy; that cinnamon and rye spice is just too much. I have two different store picks of the full proof, and while they're different and one is clearly better than the other, they are both very spice forward.
Depending on how old the RR is, over time the alcohol will start to evaporate but the flavors won't. This might help to get a more concentrated flavor with less proof or ethanol in the way.
My favorite is the 12 year. The full proof is pretty good too. I tried a ridgemont reserve pick at a restaurant and it was pretty forgettable so maybe you guys got lucky with a honey barrel. I haven't tried the BIB yet though.
Hi guys! Thanks for the vid. Jealous about the Ridgemont. Only small batch available here in Canada but ordering some of the others, you pay 2-3 x msrp, if available. Can't wait for the borders to open!
Catching up on older episodes. Love the 1792 line. I have a Ridgemont Reserve from around 2002. My favorites are Twelve Year, BIB and Single Barrel. I do not have Sweet Wheat, High Rye or Port Finish. 🥃
Another great drinkthrough, I feel like it would have been interesting to include the recent Kirkland signature/1792 bottles that came out at costco recently and see how they compare.
I haven't tried the Kirkland signature from Barton yet, but based on the reviews I've seen, it doesn't compare. Most people are saying it doesn't resemble 1792 at all.
@@CuriosityPublic Yeah I remember that, it was a good stream. I was just curious about how the 1792 BiB compared to the Kirkland/1792 BiB side by side.
I just got into bourbon this year and 1792 has quickly become one of my favorite lineups. Had never seen one in my state and stumbled upon one while traveling out of state so I went ahead and paid $85 for a non-pick full proof. Love the bottle but instantly regretted making the FOMO purchase. Since then I have been lucky enough to snag a store pick from Total Wine for $49.99. Around the same time I also landed a Stagg 23a for $51.99. We all know Stagg can have pretty silly secondary prices and for the price.... I'd just get more 1792 Full Proof or Jack Daniels SBBP's. These videos constantly highlight the same thing I've found during my short time in the bourbon scene... hype bottles are almost never worth paying secondary. There is an incredible amount of great whiskey out there. Also... starting this hobby in the early months of the year sucks - nothing is available and that tricks you into paying upcharges. Since July I've had so much more luck finding good bottles.
the Viski brand double walled glasses that have freeze gel in them are the only glass glasses I have seen with freeze gel in them. They are small rocks glasses that you can still nose because they are only about 6 oz. glasses. Not cheap $20-ish but they are nice for the times you want something chilled and not get watered down by ice and they still fit an ice sphere in them nicely if you want. My favorite rocks glass when I use one very rarely and usually with a cheaper rum like R.L. Seale's 10 year outside with a cigar.
This is going to be my go to episode tonight!! Just getting home from work but I'm going to eat and pour me some Old Forester 1910 and have a nice cigar and enjoy this! #CPU4Life ##CPULeaders
So recently did a double blind with a friend with some heavy hitters and to our surprise, 1792 small batch won hands down. For us it was little butterscotch met Kraft caramels with a little oak and leather. But caramel all day long. It's interesting that you guys found it more spicy then caramelly. I just hunted a bottle and I'll have to try again. Great review guys.
You guys should redo this drink through...include the High Rye, Port Finish, and what would be really interesting is to also include the TW branded Wolcott's (regular, BiB, and Rickhouse), AND the Costco Kirkland lineup all by 1792. I asked at TW what the difference was between the regular 1792 Small Batch and the Wolcott regular bottle and was told that all of the Wolcott's have to be at least 20% rye, so all "high ryes". I know this is two years old, but....
Store near me just got a lot of their expressions, also have the new 2009 foursquare. Hope you guys review that to see if it compares to past releases and is worth the money
You all do realize, though, that your sense-memory of the Vegas trip will color your opinion of the Ridgemont most favorably here. That variable simply cannot be removed and should be noted here. Thanks for the work here!
@@mrfuriouser And there are three different people who all agreed on the blind so you are wrong. It is just better and I agree as well as I have finally been able to try it
@@royn8032 Your argument is that of a child. Pay better attention and try harder before you write. You haven't even scratched the surface of the meaningful comment., as you only see one thing and cannot let that one thing go just long enough to learn anything else. They understood what I was saying- why can't you? Hmm. But I'm probably wrong, eh? Let's hear this masterful response of yours.
The Ridgemont is cool but dang, I wish this review would have only covered all the other stuff. In my opinion, the Ridgemont clouded your review of the stuff that we can all try to get. I'm trying to get all of the other bottles for sure! Cheers. Subd
Really don't care for the small batch so I've avoided the rest of the line. However, recently tried the full proof and liked it a lot. So I guess I need to add 1792 back into my lineup.
I've had all of these except the Ridgemont Reserve - wish I had one now. The Full Proof and BiB are easily my favorites out of the rest. The 12 year while good is a bit too oaky for me. Enjoyed the Drinkthrough!
Only just watched this. Great show guys! Went searching and found this 1792 oeiginal label for$100 kiwi, so maybe $50usd ish. Youre right, stunning! Great advice 😊
I asked this question on your instagram, but I am curious if you guys have a spreadsheet or google doc with your whiskey ratings by chance. Let me know!
@@pickleeater3102 I see it at auction for $200 in Europe....crazy....You have a valuable bottle but apparently thr CP guys think 1792 12 year is similar
@@royn8032 yeah, I'll hang onto it for a while, kinda as a conversation piece when my friends see it, but I'll definitely crack it open at some point. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of Barton whiskey. I much prefer Knob Creek, Elijah Craig and MGP whiskey.
I don’t know what happened…. But I really Miss the guild. You guys had magic in a bottle. With the bourbon boom today, you guys would be huge…you guys are music fans, bring back the original lineup
1792 Aged Twelve Years was a huge disappointment for me. I've given it several chances, shared it with friends, and it's always had a funky bitterness to it. I rank it at the bottom of the entire 1792 lineup, especially when compared to any of the store picks (of any expression) I've had.
Hey guys I actually just found out I have a 2015 bottle of Elijah Craig 12 year stuck way back in my pile lol. Would you say that would be similar to Ridgemont Reserve in this video?
Small batch is the only bourbon I have ever poured out. Terrible. All I could really taste was char. Poured out my glass and gave the bottle to my brother.
I don't understand all the love for BiB. It's my least favorite of the 1792 expressions by far; almost undrinkable to me. In fact, I struggled through the neck pour. Although it does get slightly more palatable the longer it's been open. It is only a smidge better than the Kirkland version, but they are basically the same thing.
@@CuriosityPublic I actually found ridgemont post "8 year age statement time" for 45 bucks with shipping...apparently ridgemeont used to have an 8 year age statement
@@royn8032 sorry. Meant to write Calumet, my bad. Was thinking how it would stack up to Doc Swinson for some reason. Pretty similar thoughts for either one. More oak in the older expressions and more proof in both Doc and Calumet.
